Music For Every Mood

quartetsf.jpgIf you don't have anything special lined up for this weekend, don't fret. Our friends at The Regent are hosting the Grammy nominated Quartet San Francisco for a special Mother's Day family concert (Sunday, May 11 at 7pm). Whatever your musical mood, QSF will delight; this group is renowned for transcending the bounds of traditional chamber music by crossing over into everything from jazz to tango, pop to funk, blues to bluegrass, and gypsy swing to big band.

Want to win tickets to Quartet San Francisco? Here's how:

mdsc.pngI’m thrilled to welcome new guest contributor Suz. A proud Boston mama to two kids – one who was born with Down syndrome – Suz will provide content on resources and ideas for “differently-abled” kids. Today, she shares information on a new networking program sponsored by the MA Down Syndrome Congress; the kickoff event is this Sunday at the Waltham YMCA.

Women's Lunch Place

womenslunch.JPGHere’s a way to honor mom while supporting local women in need: The Women’s Lunch Place has provided a safe, nurturing, and nourishing space for Boston women since 1982. Through the end of April, you can give mom a gift that keeps on giving by ordering a WLP Mother’s Day card in exchange for a $25 donation. An anonymous artist who was served by the WLP created the card’s watercolor image, and WLP volunteers will pen by hand your personal note.

regent_redridinghood.jpgThe Regent Theatre’s Family Fun Saturdays series is coming to its seasonal end, and they’re closing with two kiddie classics. This weekend (April 26, 10:30am) the Paint Box Theatre will present Little Red Riding Hood, and next weekend (May 3, 10:30am) the Makeshift Theatre Company will perform Laurel’s favorite fairy tale, Cinderella.

To celebrate the end of this year’s series, our generous partners at the Regent are giving away 2 family four-packs of tickets to each show! Here’s how to enter to win:

Just Call Me Maven

method.bmpSomeone told me that April typically is crazy as people come out of hibernation and get ready to party. This certainly has been the case for me in the realm of scheduled events, and last night kicked off Chapter 1 of a crazy but fabulous April, via an event where I played hostess to some of my family, friends, and colleagues as a Boston Method Maven. It was a terrific evening of socializing, getting the dirt on chemical-free cleaning, and eco-crafting with environmental lifestyle guru (and fellow Korean!) Danny Seo.

Find Local Parents

massachusetts.jpgI’ve finally made live a local resources page where parents can find mom, dad, and/or general family groups, networks, and support services. The link is readily available via the "find local parents" button in the site banner. If you know of a group to be included, e-mail tips@bostonmamas.com and provide the site's URL. Please note that the group must be active, have a website, and serve Massachusetts parents. Thanks!

Fiddlehead

fiddlehead.jpgAs much as I love the convenience of online shopping, I also firmly believe in supporting the local economy, particularly when the offerings are fabulous and eco-minded. Today, Jen reports on Fiddlehead, a lovely new mama and babe boutique in Boston that provides plenty of fuel for Jen’s obsession with organic baby goods. Read on for Jen's review, as well as to learn how to win a $25 gift certificate to Fiddlehead!

Healthy Kids Day

ymca.bmpI have a real place in my heart for the YMCA; I was at my fittest during my Y membership (in those childless days I’d hit the gym at 5:30am on my way to work), and I overcame my waterphobia (developed after losing a friend during a swimming outing in high school) via one of their adult swim classes. Tomorrow, at locations across the country, the YMCA will host Healthy Kids Day, a day of free activities designed to introduce kids to the fun of fitness. Also debuting at the event will be their new Healthy Family Home program, which offers simple tips to help families play, eat, and enjoy time together at home.

Close the Gap

komen.jpgThere likely are few degrees of separation between you and a woman with breast cancer, and probably not many more between you and someone who can't afford screening and treatment. On Friday, consider joining the Mass. Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure for a legislative luncheon from 11am – 1pm in the Great Hall of the Massachusetts State House. At this event, breast cancer survivors, advocates, community leaders, and health care providers will meet with legislative leaders to discuss closing the health care funding gap in Massachusetts so all women can get the breast health care and screening services they need. Click here to RSVP.

Everybody Clean Up

franklinpark.jpgAs much as I love being an urban dweller, nothing brings me more peace than nature, and Boston is lucky to have amidst its hustle and bustle the multi-faceted, family friendly Franklin Park. This Saturday (April 5, 10am – noon) you can show your kid what the song “Everybody clean up” means outdoors at the park’s Spring Clean-up Day. The grounds need the TLC - and families will benefit from the fresh air - after a long winter.

Paint the Floor Red

mit.jpgToday, Kate reports on a local space where function and beauty intersect:

“We live our lives in spaces, most of them interior: offices, houses, schools, stores. The buildings in which we spend our days - some beautiful, many bland - each serve a purpose, keeping us warm and dry, allowing us to collaborate with our colleagues, sleep safely at night, shop, eat, reflect, communicate. Most buildings today are preoccupied with function, but every once in a while one finds a building in which some combination of architect, sponsor, and magic come together to create a space that is about nothing so much as whimsy, beauty, and the joy of being alive.

Paddy's Parades

shamrocks.jpgNothing says spring in Boston like a week where bright shamrocks, the spring equinox, and a little snow all coexist on the agenda. Whether you wish to celebrate your Irish heritage, or simply dig festive processions, check out Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day parade this Sunday starting at 1pm at the Broadway T stop in South Boston. Abington and Scituate also will host parades this Sunday, as will Holyoke and Manchester, NH on the 30th. And if you happen to be cross continental, Dublin’s parade is, of course, on Monday.

Green Inspiration

neflower.jpgTicketed outings were far and few between when I was a kid (given the family head count of 9), so I have a firm place in my heart for the New England Spring Flower Show, which I attended one year with my mom in near exclusivity (just me and one other sister). Running through Sunday, this year’s show offers grown-ups inspiration for eco-friendly gardening, and Friday’s Plantapalooza Children’s Festival is designed to cultivate appreciation of, and interaction with, nature via animal visitors, craft and gardening activities, music, and storytelling.

March for Babies

BM_MarchforBabies_130.jpgI’m thrilled to announce that Boston Mamas is partnering with the March of Dimes to promote and participate in the March for Babies. Whether personally or through loved ones, no doubt many mamas have experienced both the joy of healthy birth and the heartache associated with premature birth. Please consider channeling both the joy and heartache into an effort to help babies get a healthy start in life.

Please join Team Boston Mamas for this, our first outreach event, be it via a donation or by walking with us on April 27.

Funnies for Grown-Ups

hubcomics.pngToday, Kate reports on two local spots to get your comic fill:

“Reading the comics has always been one of my pleasures. Comic strips and comic books were my introduction to newspapers and to independent reading, as my father quickly discovered that a stack of comic books - he still had some Walt Disney classics left over from his own childhood - could keep me happily occupied on weekend mornings and allow him several extra hours of sleep.

Glass Treasures

lalo.bmpToday, Kate reports on a local purveyor of glass treasures:

“With the holidays long gone and as the grey of winter persists, finding ways to keep shine and brightness in life becomes all the more important. Colorful accessories can add sparkle and happiness, and a small store in the Back Bay offers a beautiful selection of vibrant glass jewelry - rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, hair ornaments - that is both fun and elegant without being overly expensive. Lalo Treasures is a treat for the eyes: the cozy store is bright, welcoming, and colorful. Not to mention that Lalo's blend of materials makes for unusually durable jewelry (customers are encouraged to try on anything they want), making it terrific for moms with babes equally drawn to pretty baubles.”

Refuel Your Tank

parentingwkshp.bmpAs joyful as it is to parent children as they become increasingly communicative and independent, those developments also can, at times, test even the most patient parents. For those who feel as if they’re running on fumes, head to Lynn Lyons and Christine Cook’s Refueling Your Parenting Tank workshop on March 9 at the JCC in Newton. Parents will learn how to work through button-pushing moments and difficult transitions with kids, and the buzz on this workshop – geared towards parents of 3-10 year olds – is that Lyons and Cook are talented educators who provide parents with the ideas and communicative tools needed to refuel and hit the ground running.

Want to win two registrations to this workshop (bring a partner or friend!)? Simply email contests@bostonmamas.com by Feb. 22 (with ‘Refuel’ in the subject).

The Business of Being Born

businessofbeingborn.jpgIn college I saw a film in my cross-cultural developmental psychology class that made childbirth (squatting, under a tree) look, well, natural - far from the environmental or procedural pragmatics of today's norms. And natural or not, wherever your birth experience(s) ranked on the standard - chaotic/invasive scale, consider checking out The Business of Being Born, in which actress Ricki Lake and filmmaker Abby Epstein tackle the notion of birth as a business. Local Toy Drives

bigwishes.gif

One of my eventual goals for Boston Mamas is to launch a local philanthropic arm; meanwhile, I’ll report to you on other wonderful efforts. The Big Wishes for Little Wanderers gift drive in Jamaica Plain is underway (through Dec. 21); select a gift from a child’s wish list, deliver donations, or purchase a gift online for delivery (have tissues handy before you read the descriptions of the kids in need). And to get fit while helping others, head to the Blue Hills Reservation toy drive & bike or hike event on Sunday (10am – 1pm) to benefit Interfaith Social Services. Make your donation then hit the hike or bike trails. Both efforts are very much in need of items for older kids.
