3 Fantastic Family-Friendly Reference Books

Today, Lindsey shares a trio of reference books that kids and adults alike will love:

As my kids get older, I'm finding it harder and harder to buy birthday presents for their friends. Tween girls? That's hard. 4th grade boys? Also hard. But thankfully, these three books are a total slam dunk. My son (10) refers to and looks at all three on a regular basis. I've given them -- individually or together, depending on the birthday giftee -- more times than I can possibly count. I've personally read all three, and they are terrific.

Help Me Celebrate 9 Years By Helping a Local Charity!
Friends, today is this site's 9th birthday! When I started Boston Mamas 9 years ago, I had no business plan; I simply was fueled by a passion to create community via useful and interesting content + small business and local resource support. This simple passion (and my lack of long-term business planning - HA!) remains, and I am astutely aware that YOU are the inspiration for so much of what I do. There are 3,390 posts in the archives to prove it!

Charleston: We Can't Give Up, Regress, or Forget
It's been difficult for me to figure out what to say about Charleston. While I've found myself sweeping through the range of emotions -- sadness, outrage, frustration, hopelessness, and then some more outrage -- despite being someone who has been on the receiving end of bitter racism, I've struggled. Strangely, the person I really wanted to talk about Charleston with is Laurel, but I haven't done that yet. She feels things so deeply and we're still, for example, working with her on issues related to the Boston Marathon bombings.

Welcome, Laura!
Not long after posting my Creative Assistant job alert, I found myself incredibly moved by the response on social media, and by the volume of applicants, their qualifications, and the manner in which they shared their personal/professional goals and dreams with me. After combing through the applications (several times!) and chatting on the phone with the wonderful women who made the short list, I'm really thrilled to introduce you to Laura today.

Awesome 5-Minute Green Smoothie Recipe
I'm not sure why, but for the last couple of weeks I've found myself eyeing green smoothies at cafes and in markets, then walking away because I don't want to shell out $5-8 for something I might find totally gross. So over the weekend -- after finding myself in this position yet again -- I decided I should try making one myself. And I will admit, I was shocked by the result! I made this recipe up on the fly and it was so awesome on the first attempt that Laurel asked if I would make more so we'd have a stash in the fridge.

Friday Find: Microsoft Band
Last month when I was in Seattle at the Office Champions Summit, I learned about the Microsoft Band. And at the risk of sounding like a complete weirdo, the Band has become my new BFF. Easy to set up (just pop it out of the box, sync to your phone, and download the Microsoft Health app), the Band spans both wellness and productivity (more on that in a second) and syncs with Windows Phone, Android, and iPhone. (And if you're using it with a Windows Phone, you can take notes and set reminders by voice using Cortana. WHAT?!)

How to Unspoil Your Kids (Or Keep Them From Becoming Spoiled)
Over the last few months, I've had a lot of conversations with parents who are worried about their kids being spoiled or becoming spoiled -- about the fact that the opportunity and abundance in their lives is contributing to a problem that can’t be undone. Subsquently, I've been thinking a lot about this topic and have been assembling some notes on what has worked really well for us. Here are 10 tips for how to unspoil your kids (or keep them from becoming spoiled). I'd love to hear your thoughts via the comments below too!

Friday Find: Yoga[Addict] Socks + Gloves
I love yoga, but my need for yoga increases considerably when I’m traveling and/or training for a long race. When I was in Chicago last month, my friend Nicole introduced me to the concept of yoga gloves and I recently bought this Yoga[Addict] glove + sock set. And this week when I was in Seattle, the yoga gloves/socks were a lifesaver given that my back and neck were a wreck from my flight and my legs were tight from a 12-mile training run.
