Travel Made Easy with journeyBee

journeybee.jpgI love traveling. Except for the part about the schlepping of the stuff, especially the bulky, heavy stuff such as travel cribs. So I was intrigued to learn that there was a new (parent-designed) travel crib in town, and then find out that journeyBee delivers what it promises. Weighing in under 12 pounds (about half the weight of other play yards), and decidedly easier to schlep (the crib folds down flat and comes with a travel bag), it takes about 2 seconds to pop open and maybe 5-20 seconds (depending on how good you are at following left/right instructions) to fold down. I initially wondered about the coziness of a crib that sits directly on the floor (compared to footed travel cribs), but journeyBee has a nice, thick mattress pad and fleece cover sheet.

Traveling with the Comforts of Home

luggage.jpgToday is the first day of November (!) which for me signals -- among other things -- the approach of the holidays. Every year, Jon and I try to minimize holiday stress (incidentally, I'm super excited about the ideas Asha and I share on this topic in Minimalist Parenting), and one way we do this is alternating holiday travel with our families (so, one year we'll see my family for Thanksgiving and travel to see Jon's family for Christmas, and the following year do the opposite). But even minimalist travel can take its toll, so when HomeAway approached me about sharing my thoughts about group travel, I immediately thought about how important it's been to my family to embrace the comforts of home while we're on the road. Here are my favorite ways to travel with the comforts of home (while not bringing the whole house!):

On the Brink

muya-1.jpgOur final site visit in Ethiopia represented the awesome and the ironic. Muya (which means talent) is a woman-owned, fair trade business that has "made it" in many ways. In contrast to the primitive yet productive trappings of fashionABLE, Muya is situated in Addis Ababa on a rather restorative feeling compound -- a series of modern buildings (vs. wood and tin roofed huts) nestled between plenty of foliage. They make a gorgeous array of home and fashion products and produce scarves for Lemlem (which distributes to clients such as J. Crew). Yet despite their successes, they still struggle to gain footing with sellers; largely, it seems, due to outsider stereotypes of Ethiopia.

Feeding the Future

usaid-engine-1.jpgEver since reading Roger Thurow's The Last Hunger Season I've been thinking a lot about global food issues and about how simple agricultural educational practices (e.g., how to space out seeds, fertilize, water) are huge game changers when it comes to sustainability and helping farmers in third world countries not only feed their families, but access other necessities such as education. Our visits to USAID's ENGINE hub and a nutrition demonstration showed the progress being made in this direction.

Bright Future

bright-future-1.jpgThe more Ethiopian families I've met and the longer the time apart from my family grows, I find myself increasingly wondering about how the girls are doing in school. Did Laurel have a good day? Was the special Italian, art, music, or gym? [I can never keep the schedule straight.] What songs did Violet sing today at circle? All of what I envision -- the shiny classrooms, piles of books, and endless snack supply -- lies in stark contrast to what I'm seeing on the ground in Ethiopia, whether at traditional schools or at the Population Council's safe learning spaces for girls suffering in urban slums. The program is called BiruhTesfa (bright future), and I really need to tell you about it today.

A Day of Inspiration

health-station-1.jpgToday was a day of inspiration. We rose at 4am and flew from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar. We then spent many hours traversing bumpy rural roads on a bus. Our first two stops were the Madera Woreda Health Office and Anbesame Health Center, which both benefit from USAID funding and have subsequently made great strides in providing maternal and child health, family planning, and nutrition services in rural areas. Our third stop was to the Sene Mariam Women's Beekeeping Group, a program that is funded by USAID's Feed the Future initiative and that was developed to provide training and create jobs for disadvantaged women. I was inspired not only by how impacting USAID's programs are, but by the courage of the women we met at all three stops.

Magic at Mojo

mojo.jpgThis morning the ONE Moms journey took us to the Mojo secondary and primary schools in Mojo, Ethiopia. Both schools operate at ~1:45 teacher/student ratio and benefit from the UK Department for International Development (DFID)'s initiatives around basic services (e.g., sanitation) and education improvement (e.g., text books, teacher development). The on-site improvements (e.g., computers, books, lower student/teacher ratios -- the secondary school used to operate at a 1:67 ratio) and quantitative results (e.g., in the past 5 years, the rate for passing university entrance exams has climbed from 60 to 89%) are remarkable and I wanted to share some audio and video.

A Day of Hope

fashionABLE.jpgI have been a complete jumble of emotions since arriving in Addis Ababa on the ONE Moms mission trip. Yesterday, I was a bit of a wreck after bonding with a child at Mary Joy. But today, despite the painful histories and continued hardships to which I was exposed, I experienced a day of hope. I saw progress and great strides being made to improve the lives of Ethiopian women and their children. I saw it in the form of fashionABLE and the Hamlin Fistula Hospital.

Arrival in Ethiopia + Visit to Mary Joy

one-moms-ethiopia.pngThe beginning of my journey to Ethiopia was not ideal. I slept through my 3:30 am alarm and was woken to the sound of my phone ringing -- the cab company calling to find out why I missed my 4:15 am reservation. Luckily, they doubled back and I made it to my flight out of Boston (barely). Then we had a 5 hour delay in Dulles (I am forever grateful to my friend Liz for her fine companionship and generosity during the delay) and the 13 hour flight to Addis Ababa. But anyway, I am finally here in Ethiopia!

About Ethiopia & ONE

ethiopia.pngA month from today I head to Ethiopia as part of ONE Moms. I went to get my first round of vaccinations this week and while I was waiting, I inhaled the Ethiopia culture report shared by the travel clinic. And today I wanted to take a cue from Asha (the candor of her post hit a nerve for me) and share some facts about Ethiopia and ONE. I shared many of these facts with Laurel (who accompanied me to the clinic) and she was fascinated by it all. This trip will clearly be a game changer for me, not only for personal reasons but because it has already made me realize that I need to share more of the world with Laurel.

10 Cruise Tips for Families

cruise-1.JPGLast month I sailed the Carnival Glory to the Canadian Maritimes as part of a media tour. And as I took notes along the way, it became clear to me that I gained many takeaways from this trip. The following are 10 cruise tips for families -- I hope these will be helpful, whether you've never considered a cruise, are on the fence about taking one, or are in the thick of travel planning and preparation.

10 Tips for Easing Travel Anxiety

family-travel.jpgToday, Debbie (also of Two Adopt Two) shares 10 tips for easing travel anxiety:

August often signifies when many families embark on their final travel hurrah before the school year starts. Most of us love the change of scene, but some kids find travel challenging. Even though it's been five years since my husband and I brought our children home from Russia, they still need reassurance that we're coming back to our same old house whenever we go away. In general, children who remember being adopted, have moved recently because of a divorce or loss, have lived in multiple foster homes, or simply struggle with transition and change can find travel stressful. Here are some steps all families can take to help ease anxiety so kids can appreciate the pleasures of travel.

5 Rules for the Road

car-travel.jpgAh, car travel. Often necessary for getting from point A to point B, and also characteristically challenging for parents. Today, Jennifer shares her five top car travel survival trips:

My family loves going on vacation. And after many trips up and down the Eastern seaboard, my kids have become hearty road warriors. While yes, many parents shudder at the thought of 8-20+ hours in a car with the under six set, fear not! Here are my tried and true rules for the road.

Puzzled by Katamino

katamino.jpgLaurel typically enjoys quite a bit of generosity from her relatives during the holidays, so in the Christmas aftermath, it's particularly impressive when one thing captures her attention. And, well, ours too. This year, that thing is Katamino. Including an adjustable-sized playing board (increasing the size of the playing space increases the difficulty), different wooden shapes (pentaminos), and an impressively varied instruction manual, this game inspires seemingly endless spatial puzzles for one or more players.

Destination St. Thomas: On the Ground

st-thomas-1.JPGPursuant to yesterday's St. Thomas: In the Air post, I now want to share our experiences on the ground. As I mentioned yesterday, I embarked on this journey with both 7-year-old Laurel and 9-month-old Violet in tow to really put the family friendliness of the island to a test. I also paid to bring my mother along, both to fulfill my life list goal of taking her on a vacation and also to have an extra set of eyes for the kids. Below I cover transport, activities, accommodations, and food, and also address questions my readers asked, regarding traveling with kids.

Destination St. Thomas: In the Air

jetblue-boston.jpgEver since Sarah shared her love for St. John's Maho Bay, I've been thinking about traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands. So I felt immensely fortunate when the USVI Department of Tourism recently invited me to explore one or more of the islands for a press tour. If I were going alone or with Jon, I definitely would have wanted to compare St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix; however, given that my editorial interest was family friendly travel, I brought Laurel (which the USVI DOT kindly accommodated financially, in addition to my expenses), and given that I'm still nursing I brought Violet too (no expenses). I also decided to fulfill a life list item and pay my Mom's way so she could enjoy a vacation. I have a lot of handy travel information to share (including answering travel Q&A from readers), so I'll be reporting across two (possibly three) posts. The first focuses on air travel.

Happily Perplexus'd

perplexus.jpgI admittedly tend to shy away from plastic toys, but we recently caved and bought the Perplexus Maze Game, which Laurel couldn't stop talking about after learning about it from classmates. And I have to admit that this game is ridiculously fun. The 3D sphere comprises one long, convoluted maze track including three different entry points -- so, for example, you don't have to start at the beginning if you've already mastered section 1 of the maze. Following the maze requires careful rotation and keeping your eye on the ball.

6 Car Safety Tips

car-seat.jpgToday, Carole Arsenault of Boston Baby Nurses shares 6 car safety tips for parents and caregivers in honor of September's National Child Passenger Safety Month:

In March 2011, the American Academy of Pediatrics published its latest car seat recommendations, which specify that children under the age of two years remain rear-facing in their car seats unless the child's height and weight exceed the car seat manufacturer's rear-facing specifications. According to Dennis Durbin, MD, FAAP (lead author of the new policy), "a rear-facing child safety seat does a better job of supporting the head, neck and spine of infants and toddlers in a crash, because it distributes the force of the collision over the entire body."

The Sweetness of Story Land

storyland-polar-coaster.jpgThough it's been in operation since 1954, Story Land was not on my radar until a few years ago (probably because growing up, our immediate family of 9 didn't do vacations). And then it wasn't until a few weeks ago that we visited with Laurel. But we finally made it, and I'm thrilled to report that Story Land is a really sweet spot for families to enjoy together. Here are some thoughts about our trip, and why I recommend it for families in striking distance of the property:

Red Jacket Resorts

red-jacket-resorts.jpgI'm not sure if all families experience this, but in the past I have found family vacation planning a little challenging even with just two grownups and one (very vocal) child verbalizing preferences. Which is probably why we haven't done much in the way of just-us (vs. trips to see friends or family) family vacations. However, Red Jacket Resorts recently invited me to check out their properties and after mulling over the options, I decided that the universe was sending me a message to give family vacation planning another try -- that it may in fact be possible to find a destination that would satisfy all of our interests. Here's what I found at Red Jacket:

Minimalist Travel Tips

luggage.jpgSince Violet's arrival, I've been wondering whether we need to upgrade from our little four door sedan to something like a small-footprint wagon or SUV to accommodate our expanded family (not to mention an extra booster for Laurel's playdate buddies). We haven't taken any steps on car shopping so far, instead opting for super minimal packing when it's time for car travel. During our getaway this past weekend, I jotted down some minimalist travel tips that I thought would be useful as you pack for summer travel. I hope these are helpful, and if you have other favorite minimalist travel tips, please feel free to share them in the comments below!

Tips For Traveling With Baby

airplane.jpgToday, Carole Arsenault of Boston Baby Nurses shares tips for traveling with baby:

Whether your baby is newly born, a few months old, or nearing a year, the better prepared you are for any trip you're taking, the happier everyone will be. So rule #1 is to plan ahead. You really want to keep your baby's needs in mind as you decide where to go, where to stay, and how you're going to get there. After that's decided, you'll want to plan additional details, such as what to pack, ideally no later than two weeks before your trip. Make lists and check things off as you go. Here are a few areas you'll want to focus on:

Dear Boston Mamas: Miami Bound with Kids

Activity Books For Summer & Beyond

summer-bridge-activities.gifSince Laurel is academically oriented by nature, this summer I've been all about simply playing and getting her outside and active. However, she loves activity books and they are my go-to item to bring to restaurants and when we travel, and we also use them for quiet time at home. And whether you want to use activity books to warm your child up before the school year starts, or simply want to use them on the go or at home as we do, check out Carson-Dellosa's Summer Bridge Activities. Though these activity books are marketed as a tool to prevent summer learning loss, you really can use them any time of year. The workbooks cover language arts, math, science, and social studies for Pre-K through 8th grade via colorful illustrations and activities. My one recommendation is to consider adjusting the level depending on your child; since Laurel is very good at reading and math, the K-1 book was too easy for her, but the 1st-2nd grade book has proven fun yet challenging.

Now, want to be one of three winners to receive a Summer Bridge book? Here's how:

Beach Gear Favorites

wonder-wheeler-beach-cart.jpgToday, Heather shares a roundup of beach gear favorites that made vacationing with four kids a breeze:

We recently returned from our annual family weekend at the Cape. We love Ridgevale Beach in Chatham. The large, sandy oceanfront beach typically is warm and calm, which makes it ideal for swimming, plus they have a lifeguard on duty. Also, tucked behind the main beach are several large tidal pools that are terrific for younger kids. In my opinion, Ridgevale provides all the amenities a family with young children needs: parking very close to the beach, bathrooms, snack bar, lifeguard.

Love These Links: (Mostly) DIY Edition

alpha-mom-plantable-paper.jpgHere are some lovely links that caught my eye this week around the web. Clearly I've got DIY projects (and travel) on my mind. I love this pretty plantable paper project from Alpha Mom (shown) and this sweet paper corsage tutorial from Make and Takes. These homemade bath bombs from Petit Elefant would make a cute gift for mom or a girlfriend. If you're feeling really crafty and like sewing (and love embellished tops as much as I do), try these DIY embellished tops from BlogHer. And it's not DIY, but since I'm the minimalist mama, I can't help but love these minimalist travel tips from Gwen Bell. Happy reading!

Dear Boston Mamas: Summer in Boston

travelers.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from Jan via e-mail:

We are visiting Boston this summer (from Ireland) with 3 kids (12, 10 and 5) and are looking for recommended kid-friendly restaurants, some free activities, best ice-cream, best toy shops, etc. We will have 10 days in Cape Cod then 10 days in Concord. We will have a car, and the house we are staying at in Concord is close to the train station so the plan would be to take the train into Boston.

Beach Blanket Buddy

childrens-place-towel-buddy.jpgIn a fit of panic during the (first) great flood of 2010, Jon and I made the mistake of using one of Laurel's (ratty but apparently beloved) beach towels to soak up water in the basement. She was distraught. It subsequently was oddly fortuitous that I received a towel buddy bag in the mail a couple of days later courtesy of The Children's Place. Laurel adores the pattern (shown) and has been wearing this towel around the house as a shawl ever since (said ratty and water logged old beach towel is a distant memory). And functionally, these cozy 100% cotton terry towels have a built in bag so you can stuff the towel inside itself, toss in other small essentials, pull the drawstring closure, and tote it backpack style. It's a brilliant solution for the beach, which finally seems like a not too distant reality.

Take Me Away to Maho Bay

maho-bay-1.jpgAlready longing for your next vacation? Today, Sarah shares a tropical vacation that’s proven fun, eco-friendly, and affordable for her family of four:

I’m not really a cold-weather person. In my humble opinion, once the holidays have come and gone, it could go right ahead and get on to spring. However, seeing as New England clearly isn’t in on my plan, I have only one recourse: a tropical vacation. And amazingly, I found the perfect solution that allows my family of four to spend a week in the Caribbean without completely breaking the bank.

Rushes in Paradise

atlantis-1.jpgApologies for my reduced posting this week, but, save a couple of brief Twitter and Facebook updates on the front end of my trip, from Saturday through Tuesday I went radio silent while absorbing a visit to Atlantis, Paradise Island in the Bahamas and I'm currently attempting to cope with my besieged inbox. While the trip was for work (a press event), it also was very personal, signaling my first mom-daughter flight with Laurel and my first work trip where Laurel was encouraged to attend. The trip also provided opportunity to reflect on some of my baggage about life's luxuries (suffice to say, growing up, my immediate family of nine never flew anywhere), and also about human behavior in response to rushes of all kinds (you can take the girl out of psychology, but not the psychologist out of the girl).

Magnetic Mosaica

orb-factory-mosaica.jpgI admittedly have a bit of a weak spot for creative and colorful educational toys (especially those under $10), so this weekend when Laurel and I picked up sticky mosaics (my go-to gift for elementary school aged kids) for a birthday party, I couldn’t help but say yes when she asked if we could buy this Orb Factory Mosaica toy. Produced by the same folks who make the awesome sticky mosaics, this compact tin includes 64 two-tone magnetic squares and an insert with suggested patterns (build right inside the tin to keep the tiles in place). Awesome for travel and also for encouraging spatial skills and quiet time at home, Laurel spent hours with this toy this weekend (Jon and I also couldn’t resist building a few patterns...), which allowed me to get to some much needed cleaning and organization in advance of hosting Thanksgiving.

Road Dogging with Puppies

christine-koh-john-ondrasik.JPGA few weeks ago I experienced a rather unusual night of party hopping that included seeing John Ondrasik (aka. Five for Fighting) live at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston. In addition to being utterly moved by the musical experience itself, I also was touched by John’s clear love for his family (exemplified when he explained the inspiration for various songs). Thanks to the lovely Barbara Jones, I met John after the show, at which time he kindly offered to pen a guest blog post on Boston Mamas. In particular, I was curious about John’s best strategies for staying connected with his family while on the road; an issue I discuss with many parents who travel for work. Magnetic Appeal

mudpuppy.jpgFor compact travel toys, I love the concept of magnetic or reusable sticker books, but we’ve repeatedly been disappointed by the mediocre magnetism or stick of several brands. That is, until we tried Mudpuppy’s vinyl sticker play scenes and magnetic figures. Offering beautifully illustrated themes for boys and girls, the generously appointed garden fairies play scene (which includes 6 fairies + costumes, critters, and tea party fare) and princess dress up doll tin have provided countless hours of entertainment. The princess tin, which now goes everywhere with us, offers a brilliant solution to weak cardboard-based magnet books. The hinged tin case serves as the stage (and convenient storage!) for two double sided scene cards, allowing the princess and her many outfits and accessories stable styling grounds.

Want to win a Mudpuppy sticker play scene + magnet set*? Here’s how:

Camp for the Whole Family

medomak.jpgHere’s a fun twist on the camping experience. Reader Maureen from Newton wrote in with this tip: “I wanted to share with you a vacation spot my family has enjoyed together [since 2003]. Medomak Camp (3 hours north of Boston) is a family camp in Maine. It’s similar to a traditional summer camp but the whole family attends. A chef prepares three meals a day, families stay in comfortably clean cabins, activities run from 9AM until the campfire is lit after dark, and adults have their own activities to chooses from (yoga, massage, rowing, sailing, archery, etc.).”

Lessons From Disney

disney1.JPGMy first visit to Florida was not a pleasant one. I was there against my will (the mere beginnings of my dysfunctional relationship with my postdoc advisor…), presenting data I barely understood for an otolaryngology conference (don’t try to say that 3 times fast). And I wasn’t alone in my suffering. I lured poor Jon to join me, with promises of calm beaches, nature excursions, and swimming with manatees. Little did we know that the hotel was simultaneously hosting Canadian Spring Break and Harley Davidson Week (hence the bargain hotel rates), and the manatees had long since swum off for cooler waters.

Reset the Doodle Dial

wipeoff.jpgWe’ve been on the go a lot these days, and waiting anywhere got a whole lot easier once I started toting Laurel’s Ultimate Wipe Off 123 book. I have given this and the ABC book as gifts to several of Laurel’s pals and they’re always a big hit. The books offer a fun way for kids to learn to draw and write letters and numbers, and an erasable marker is included so all you need is a napkin or tissue to reset the doodle dial.

Travel Lifesavers

travel.JPGCompared to some of our other jet setting friends, it took us a long time to get around to flying with Laurel, and things went remarkably well. In part, I think this was related to traveling with a 3-year-old who can sink her teeth into an activity with relative independence, communicate needs, understand instructions, and not need as much gear. But we also made some planning decisions that made travel enormously easier; here I share them with you:

Crazy About clek

clek.gif

Few things are easy when it comes to sorting out baby gear options; and adding insult to injury is the frustration/panic induced by figuring out how to install your infant and bigger baby car seats. The good news is, when you graduate to a booster, you can stand rewarded by the clek olli booster. We are crazy about this seat; the compact, lightweight structure and ridiculously easy install/release (the seat clicks in and out in mere seconds via two LATCH probes) makes transferring the seat between cars a cinch. And the ultra padded seat is easy on the tush and comes in a variety of chic neutral or eye popping fabrics. Your big kid won’t feel like a baby in this sweet ride.

And how cool is this; clek loves our readers as much as we love their booster and they're offering Zebra print boosters to THREE WINNERS! Here’s how to enter to win:

Beyond Undies

hanes.gif

Raise your hand if you’ve ever dressed your kid in a fabulous holiday outfit that got covered in spills or spit up before you even got to grandma’s house.

As cute as fancy clothing is, for holiday travel, basic layers (and backups) are key. And in this vein, I was surprised to learn that there's more to Hanes than undies. In addition to parent resources, mom features (this month Travel Channel co-host Tracy Gallagher shares holiday travel survival tips), and kid activities, they’ve got a full line of comfy, inexpensive mix and match basics, including some impressively stylish tops. We especially dig the layered look tee collection for girls (shown, Hoot Parade) and the graphic octopus tee for boys.

And Hanes wants to hook one lucky winner up with comfy clothes! Here’s how to win a Hanes.com $50 gift certificate:

Re-Inventing the Wheel: Putting Safety First

gm.bmp

Today, Sharon reports on safe driving techniques that families (especially those with new drivers) could benefit from:

“In late September I traveled via Boston Mamas to the GM Proving Grounds in Michigan to test out the GM 2008 lineup. This was a new trail blazed for this road warrior (who fancies sneakers over wheels), but I discovered parallels between the two transport modes; that a little knowledge goes a long way in taking advantage of safety features.

Car Travel with Kids

highway.jpg

I know many parents whose babies have, at some point, hated extended car rides. Laurel responded similarly as an infant, and no wonder; it’s noisy and likely weird to be strapped into a car seat unable to see the parents. Back then we dreaded car trips since they typically involved unsuccessfully trying to console Laurel and thus driving with a screaming baby; our first Thanksgiving trip with Laurel fit this scenario and at one point I actually climbed into the backseat, uncomfortably wedged myself over the car seat, and nursed, hoping that Jon wouldn’t hit any sharp corners.

We’ve come a long way since that time, but our recent vacation’s 14 hour round trip drive still left room for intimidation. We decided to plan what we could but roll with the rest, and it worked out amazingly well. Consider these tips when readying for your next family road trip:

Doodle Magic

aquadoodle.gif

Typically, I am all about color, and am thrilled that Laurel’s favorite activity is painting, but the no mess factor of the Aquadoodle is pretty fantastic.

Laurel received the (award winning) Aquadoodle Travel Doodle ($14.99 at Toys R Us) for Christmas from her aunt and uncle and she loves it. Just add water to the pen capsule and your babe can draw on both canvas sides of the board. Doodles disappear in minutes.

Some Amazon users with extensive experience with other Aquadoodle products weren’t as happy with this new entry in the Aquadoodle line, but as newbies to Aquadoodle, we have no complaints. If traveling, we’d just suggest bringing a bottle of water along to keep the pen (and yourself) hydrated during the journey.

We Finally Smartened Up

adjoiningroom.jpg

One would think that with over a decade’s worth of collective graduate school years between us, Jon and I would have been able to figure out that the disparity between Laurel and our bedtimes – coupled with a single hotel room – would leave the adults hanging around in the dark. This is what happened during a vacation last year; we booked at a hotel that didn’t offer suites and by 7:30 pm Laurel was asleep, her crib rolled into the little passage en route to the bathroom, and Jon and I sat in the dark by the window, sipping wine out of plastic cups. Somehow whispering sweet nothings in the dark loses its punch when you have no choice but to whisper and sit in the dark.

Well, this year we finally smartened up. When we booked our Thanksgiving lodging we compromised and opted to book at a midrange hotel and shorten our stay so we wouldn’t feel bad about requesting two adjoining rooms. Not only did Laurel love running between the two rooms, but once we put her to bed we could still hang out in the adjoining room until we were ready to hit the lights.

Tip: The adjoining room doors only have doorknobs on one side; we wedged the hotel’s information folio in the door so it wouldn’t accidentally close and lock Laurel in on the other side.

Stretch It Out

stretch.jpg

We all likely could stand to incorporate more stretching in our day, particularly what with all the time spent sitting at the computer or hauling hefty babies around. Stretching will serve especially well this week, whether it is to ease tension from travel or holiday preparations, or gear you up for the dessert course.

Here’s some content to check out; print your favorites for easy reference: 1) morning stretches you can do in bed; 2) eight simple stretches that incorporate modified yoga poses (includes pictures); 3) a full body set of stretches for women (includes diagrams).

Be sure to follow the instructions so you stretch safely, and enjoy your moments of peaceful self-care.

Reduce Your Baggage

ducktub.jpg

With holiday travel comes cumbersome physical (and sometimes emotional) baggage. You at least can take charge of reducing your physical baggage with the Munchkin Duck Bathtub ($9.99 at Target). Recommended by a mama reader from Italy (whose 20-month-old has enjoyed this tub all across Europe), this inflatable tub stows compactly and is suitable for ages 6-24 months, has a heat safety feature, and a non-slip surface to keep baby in place.

Double Duty

valco.gif

Aside from the general chaos factor, having a second baby presents a transport issue, particularly if your first still requires periodic strolling.

A mama friend gives major kudos to the Valco Runabout Tri Mode stroller ($425 at BabyCenter shipping is free, a rain/wind shield is included). Cool looking and compact, the Valco three-wheel all-terrain stroller offers full recline for infants, and toddlers will love the royal perspective from the toddler attachment seat ($40). If you like the look of a pram, a bassinet attachment ($150) also is available.

The height-adjustable handles make this stroller a good find for couples with a substantial height differential. Open dimensions: 36"L x 26"W x 40"H; folded: 32"L x 26"W x 16"H; weight: 25 lbs. Suitable from birth to 50 lbs.

Busted Mommy

babe_ff.jpg

Some might say that babes don’t earn their keep, what with their relentless consumption of Cheerios and diapers, but this week my peanut got me out of a traffic ticket. We were en route from day care and, eager to get home, I tried to catch the right turn light and basically ended up blowing through the red. As soon as I cleared the corner I got pulled over. Busted mommy.

Well, our babe loves emergency vehicles; she apparently couldn’t believe our good fortune that the flashing blues were right behind and for us. When the officer peered into the backseat Laurel said “policeman!” and offered him her red shovel (still in the car from our beach adventures last weekend). The officer asked about the shovel and Laurel proceeded to tell him about going to the beach, visiting Grandma and Grandpa, and the fact that there was too much water in the ocean. He was incredibly kind and patient in the face of all of this chatter.

I’d like to think that my clean driving record was my ticket to redemption, but really, the babe’s cuteness (documented here with her flower fingers) likely was the decisive factor in my only receiving a warning. I am truly grateful that the officer showed compassion towards the frazzled mom behind the wheel, and he still did his job even without issuing the ticket; I’ve been careful and law abiding ever since. Now I just have to figure out how to get the babe to stop saying, “Mommy ran the red light!”

Flower Fingers

anatex_coaster.jpg

Traveling with a babe isn’t exactly relaxing, but the right toys (and, if you are lucky, temperament) can make a trip enormously easier.

We just returned from a long weekend involving 8 hours roundtrip car/boat travel. We planned our timing carefully, scheduling the longest car leg over mid-day nap. Based on previous travel experiences, the options were: 1) use naptime to travel; 2) spend 2 hours twisted uncomfortably picking up dropped books and toys; or 3) try ineffectively to placate squirmy, screechy babe.

Our well-laid plans of course went out the window. In one direction we hit traffic that woke the babe up for the remainder of the drive; on the way back she didn’t sleep at all because she had fallen asleep during the earlier 45-minute ride to the ferry. We thought we were doomed, but: 1) the babe was in terrific spirits (i.e., she enjoyed babbling to herself and singing songs); and 2) we were armed with the Anatex Shape ‘n Color Coaster.
