12 Great Gifts for New Moms

salmon.jpgToday, Judy (also of Talking Thirty) shares 12 great gift ideas for new moms:

These days it seems that baby announcements from friends roll in about one per week and I spend my weekends cuddling squishy newborn after squishy newborn (no complaints here!). I've realized that often we focus on gifts for the new baby and sometimes forget the person who has been through the most -- the new mama! Here are my favorite gift ideas for new moms.

Moving Forward After Miscarriage

woman-alone.jpgToday, Jules shares an important lesson learned from her miscarriage. And resources to share with those in need:

October is National Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month, and having miscarried just a few weeks ago, the month holds a very new meaning for me. I was ten weeks pregnant when I stared in a blurry eyed panic at that flat line on the screen...just one week earlier, I had seen that fantastically fast flicker of my baby's perfect heartbeat. I was crushed, and at my D&C the following day, the tears flowed heavily, particularly knowing that, ironically, it was the labor and delivery entrance that took us to the day surgery ward where the fetus -- and my high hopes -- would be removed.

Dear Boston Mamas: Life with Two Kids

laurel-violet-feet.jpgWhile I was en route to California this past weekend, I was so happy to have some quiet time to read through more of the Boston Mamas survey comments. Among the responses was a question that fit well both for the Dear Boston Mamas column, and given that I just guest posted at Rookie Moms about what I have learned in having a second child. Of course, a lot of the below would apply to 2+ children as well; if you have additional thoughts to share, feel free to do so in the comments!

Question: How is life with two kids? We are expecting #2 and I know it will be different but how? How are you managing? Is baby #2 on a schedule or on older child's schedule?

Hooray for Heather!

isis-massage.jpgDuring the pushing phase of my 58 hours of labor with Violet (over five months ago...where does the time go?), I strained something in my left hip/glute area. When I received clearance 6 weeks postpartum and started working out again, I attempted to address this problem area via yoga. I also resumed running, and that, my friends, has been pretty torturous. I'm not a natural runner to begin with, and whatever was going on in my left hip/glute made for not so nimble runs followed by immense discomfort, including a searing pain that seemed buried deep in the bone on my left back side. So I slowed down on running and continued yoga, but felt pretty discouraged to feel no improvement over the course of a couple of months. I know these things take time, but still.

Dear Boston Mamas: Baby Shower Etiquette

ialbert-owls.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from Renee via e-mail:

Dear Boston Mamas: Hello! I'm hoping to get some input/advice. I'm a mom to a 19 month old girl and I'm pregnant with twins. We do not yet know the genders. Several people have suggested to me that I should have a shower. I always thought of a shower for your 2nd+ kids as greedy and poor etiquette. However, given that we are expecting twins, there are quite a few things that we will need, especially if one or more of the babies is a boy. Do you think there is an exception to the etiquette if you are having twins?

Dear Boston Mamas: Unique Baby Shower Gifts

pregnancy.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from Janelle via Twitter. Janelle asked me for some ideas for unique baby shower gifts. Having enjoyed a baby shower for Violet earlier this year and given my minimalist tendencies, my preference definitely leans towards practical, but sometimes practical also equals unique! Here are some of my favorite ideas -- spanning practical and pretty.

Super Cute Swimsuits

lands-end-geo-print.jpgThough I typically am a fan of bikinis, given that I'm hitting swimsuit season about three months postpartum, I wanted a little more coverage this season. Just the other week I was looking remorsefully at my bikini collection (which includes a couple of cute bikinis I bought at Lands' End last year) when Lands' End reached out and asked if I'd like to try out some swimsuits for editorial consideration. And I'm thrilled to report that there's just as much cuteness in the full coverage suits as there are in the bikinis. Here are two great picks to consider:

The Baby Nurse Bible

baby-nurse-bible.jpgCarole Arsenault of Boston Baby Nurses has been sharing her wisdom as a regular contributing here at Boston Mamas for over two years, so when she told me she was writing a book, I was thrilled. And Carole's book -- The Baby Nurse Bible -- does not disappoint. In fact, given the sea of information parents typically are overwhelmed by, this book is particularly refreshing in the tangibility of scope (it's just over 300 pages) while covering an impressive amount of information.

Postpartum Q & A

baby-feet.jpgOne thing is for sure: in this fast paced, instant gratification world of social media, being an online person who disappears for a few days apparently results in some digital hand wringing. When I finally turned my Blackberry back on following 58 hours of labor, I was touched and surprised to see so much concern about my whereabouts on Twitter and Facebook. There have been some frequently asked questions, and I thought I'd share the responses here since some of the information may be handy to other expecting parents.

Get Organized With Baby

one-year-to-an-organized-life-with-baby.jpgWhether you're early or late in your pregnancy, read on for my thoughts on One Year to an Organized Life with Baby, as well as to learn how to be one of three winners to receive a copy of One Year:

To be perfectly frank, when I received a copy of One Year to an Organized Life with Baby for editorial consideration, I initially fretted a little. Why? Because by my typical obsessed-with-Excel-and-Outlook-to-do-list standards, I've been something of a slacker in the baby organization department. (Actually, I like to think that I've just been really chill and Zen about the whole baby thing.) I was concerned that this would be a "should" book, replete with non-essential super mom type tasks that would make me feel bad about myriad things unaccomplished. Never mind that I was looking at this book well into my third trimester.

Secondhand Baby Shower

baby-shower-1.JPGI had a bit of a rough week last week and the baby shower my friend Heidi hosted for me this past weekend was a wonderful antidote, making me feel enormously grateful for the happy energy and wonderful people I have in my life. And I wanted to share the theme -- a secondhand baby shower (because I'm an eco-geek and because I have many friends who are done having babies and were eager to pass things along) -- plus some great leads from Heidi's planning. Here's how it all came down the pike:

Old Navy Cute Alert

OldNavy_polkadotkimono.jpgNow that we've hit five weeks until baby, in addition to the name thing (which we're working on thanks to you all!), I'm also getting lots of nudges about nesting. It's true -- as organized as I am about so many things in life, we have done nothing in the nesting department. I figure there's plenty of time to sort it out, and perhaps I'll feel inspired following the baby shower my friend Heidi is throwing me this weekend. When Heidi offered to host the event, I asked for a secondhand/recycled shower since: a) I'm an eco-geek; and b) so many of my mom friends are done making babies and are eager to pass things along. However, I'm also planning to stop at Old Navy -- both to pick up any last minute needs for the baby, and also some spring things for Laurel. Read on to see some of my favorite picks, as well as to learn how to win a $100 gift certificate to Old Navy!

Work, Life, & Parenting, Part II

life-style-episode-10.jpgThis week on Life.Style, I engaged in a second conversation on work, life, and parenting; definitely check out the episode if you didn't see it live on Thursday. I chatted with Morra Aarons-Mele of Women & Work and Women Online about everything from why the US lags behind other countries on parental leave policy, recommendations for women trying to strategize maternity leave, the modern family juggling act and division of labor, flex options from the employee and employer perspectives, as well as dads, same sex couples, and single parenting. Phew! Check out the episode for full commentary and inspiration, and for easy reference, below are the conversation point links that were shared during the interviews.

Fantastic Maternity Tights

sara-blakely-assets-maternity-tights.jpgI love wearing dresses, but clearly, going bare legged isn't the greatest option if getting from point A to B involves going outside in frigid winter weather. So I was thrilled to find -- in advance of heading to Alt Summit -- Sara Blakely's ASSETS maternity tights. Though slimming features weren't my concern, I was drawn to these tights given Blakely's Spanx reputation, and clearly, Blakely knows how to deliver the goods. The tights are affordable, supportive, true to size, and feature a remarkably comfortable pregnancy panel (I also bought a pair of cheapo back up tights and they were nowhere near as well made). At Alt, while I did go bare legged in a dress one evening (when getting from points A to B/C/D were all within the hotel), I wore the ASSETS tights another night out with a purple dress with cool metal accents and gray peep toe booties. I felt fantastic. And fantastically comfortable. Even after indulging in too many finger foods.

We Need A Girl's Name

letterpress-nametag.jpgNow that we've officially switched from count up to count down mode with this pregnancy (7 weeks to go!), many people have asked what we're naming our second daughter. And as with many responses to questions (e.g., Have you figured out child care? Where will the baby sleep? What do you need for baby stuff?) associated with my remarkably laid back approach to this pregnancy, the answer has been, "Hmm...I have no idea." But a few things recently suggested that it's time to get a move on thinking about this name business -- and I'm hoping you can help me out here:

Prenatal Yoga with Bec Conant

prenatal-yoga-bec-conant.jpgLast week, I officially decided to shelve running until after I deliver the baby. And since yoga subsequently has been my main fitness practice, and since many of the sequences I typically enjoy aren't so great while carrying a giant pumpkin belly, I decided to buy a copy of Prenatal Yoga with Bec Conant following the rave recommendations for Bec (a local prenatal yoga teacher, doula, and hypnobirthing teacher) and her classes when I queried about favorite prenatal yoga classes in Boston.

Postpartum Food & Fitness

vegetables.jpgToday, Carole Arsenault of Boston Baby Nurses shares recommendations for getting back into a food and fitness groove postpartum:

After a holiday season full of delicious and plentiful food, the task of working on getting back your pre-pregnancy body may seem daunting. But with the momentum of the new year, now is the best time to get yourself healthy and in shape. Since your metabolism slows down after pregnancy, a combination of some simple exercises (cardiovascular and muscle strengthening) along with smart food and portioning choices will help you can get fit and stay healthy. Below are simple changes you can make, and safe, easy ways to get your body moving.

Healthy Holiday Eating Tips

stonyfield-healthy-holiday-eating.jpgI've long been a fan of Stonyfield Farm; theirs was Laurel's very first yogurt (oh how that baby went crazy over the creamy full fat yogurt!) and Laurel and I are big fans of the Oikos caramel yogurt. And through Boston Mamas I've had the pleasure of learning about the evolution of their brand (how cool is it that their multipack cups are made from plants?), interfacing with CE-Yo Gary Hirshberg, and benefiting from their sponsorship. And now I'm thrilled to announce that I have joined Stonyfield's amazing team of contributors to write periodically about green and healthful living. My first post just went live, in which I share tips for eating healthy during the holidays -- important both because I'm pregnant and also since I find it especially important to model good eating habits for kids at this time of year. Enjoy the post, and of course feel free to share any other great tips you employ during this decadent season!

Staying Fit During Pregnancy (& Beyond!)

running-shoes.jpgYesterday on BabyCenter's Momformation blog I guest posted on seven ways to stay fit during pregnancy (or really, any time!). Whether you're pregnant or looking to get rolling with a fitness plan, I hope you'll check it out. Also, a note on running (per a discovery I made after submitting the article to BabyCenter). I wrote off regular runs a few weeks ago (~20 weeks) because longer runs weren't feeling comfortable anymore. However, I recently discovered that doing intervals feels fantastic. So, I'll alternate walking and running (e.g., 5 minutes walking/3 minutes running) for ~3 miles. It feels great to sweat and get the heart rate up and so far has felt completely comfortable. And it seems like a fitting nod to how I started running in the first place, via the Couch to 5K program.

Flu Shots for Pregnant Women & Babies

flu-gov-image.jpgToday, Carole Arsenault of Boston Baby Nurses shares information on the flu shot for pregnant women and babies, and staying healthy during flu season:

My clients often ask me whether the flu shot is safe for pregnant women and babies. And the answer is yes; in fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends flu shots (not nasal spray) for all women who are pregnant during the flu season (November - February). The CDC also recommends the flu shot for primary infant caregivers and babies over 6 months of age. The nasal spray is recommended and effective for children two years of age and older.

Luna & Stella's Lovely Rings

luna-stella-stacking-rings.jpgOne of the best gifts I have ever come up with was back when I was in graduate school. For my mother's 60th birthday I enlisted my six siblings to go in on a big gift: a custom designed mother's ring to replace her wedding ring that had been lost (um, thrown out a moving car window by a toddler) many years before. (I wanted to go with custom because everything I saw ready-made on the market looked tacky, plus we needed something that could be styled awesomely to accommodate seven stones.) I've subsequently always loved the idea of mother's jewelry, but for those of us in our childbearing years, many of the options seem so, well, permanent. Which is one of the reasons I fell in love with Luna & Stella's pretty birthstone stacking rings. Read on to learn more about Luna & Stella, as well as how to win a $50 gift certificate to pick out something pretty of your own!

mighty-aphrodite.gifToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from CM via e-mail:

Second Trimester (Or Not!) Fall Fashion

bcbg-max-azria-tunic.jpgOne thing that's clear about pregnancy is that bodies grow very differently (when in doubt, do not ask!). I "popped" late with Laurel, and it's been similar this go around. At almost 17 weeks, though I'm definitely feeling thicker around the middle, I'm still wearing my regular clothes; as of two weeks ago, I simply looked a little full of korma and last week I started sporting a little bump that's still not evident in regular clothes. Through the second trimester, transition pieces are key, and I'm all about mining one's existing wardrobe, particularly since in the second trimester you may not be ready for full blown maternity clothing. Here are my five favorite regular wardrobe pieces that are serving me immensely well in transition. I've put together a few cute looks based on these pieces and all of these looks are non-maternity wear, so even if you aren't pregnant you can enjoy them. Today I'm focusing on casual clothing and plan on doing a dressy/work roundup soon.

Dear Boston Mamas: How To Support Parents of Premature Babies

hands.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from Precillia via e-mail:

Dear Christine, My good friend gave birth 3 weeks ago to her daughter - 12 weeks early. She lives in CA, and a number of her good friends are now on the East coast. She asked for a support group after delivery, and the doctors were not able to provide one locally. I'm wondering if you have any advice from your experience, and or from your readership on how we (her friends) can best support her from afar. We are beyond flowers, etc. We did send a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant so that they could enjoy a night out. We are all texting, calling, emailing etc. without expecting a response, but really to show our support and convey our thoughts and prayers. Their situation is so stressful and we all feel so helpless...not to mention, guilty, that many of us have had babies this year who are healthy.

Mild swelling due to the accumulation of fluids in the tissue is normal during the third trimester of pregnancy, especially in the heat of summer. Birthday Giveaway: Moody Mamas

moody-mamas.jpgI loved being pregnant with Laurel (I was one of those annoying people who experienced a blissfully smooth pregnancy), but I wasn't wild about the limited fashion options at that time. The Cutest Helmets Ever

polarn-o-pyret.jpgThe bold and cheerful clothing of Swedish outfitter Polarn O. Pyret has been on my radar for some time, but it wasn't until recently that I had a chance to check out some samples in person. And I'm happy to report that Polarn O. Pyret delivers the cuteness and the quality. Offering an eye popping collection of clothing for babies, kids, and expecting moms (totally shopping this collection if I ever go that road again), I am -- not surprisingly -- most drawn to their 100% organic cotton collection. Well constructed to endure plenty of wear and laundering, I find the nature-inspired patterning of the Gunila Axen body suit + matching helmet particularly awesome. Besides, every baby really ought to have a cute little helmet for their cute little noggin.

What Makes a Good Mother?

to-hell-with-all-that.jpg Today, Kate recommends a thought provoking book about motherhood:

“The essayist Caitlin Flanagan has developed a successful career writing thoughtfully and often with acerbic humor on issues of family, marriage, motherhood, and feminism. She courts controversy by raising uncomfortable questions about whether men or women are better suited to housework, whether small children should be cared for by anyone other than their mothers, and whether contemporary women are fundamentally unsuited to accept the sacrifices required by marriage. She points at working mothers, stay-at-home mothers, and work-at-home mothers -- in other words, all of us -- and asks us to look into ourselves to understand our motivations, our compromises, and our choices and their impacts on our children. She is also the mother of twin boys, and a breast cancer survivor.

Healthful Pregnancy Habits

fruits-vegetables.jpgMinding your intake during the holidays can be challenging for anyone, and even more so when you’re eating for two. Yes, you’re expected to consume extra calories (thought in general, it’s only about 300 calories, which isn’t a lot when you stack it up in terms of holiday cookies), but it’s important to make the calories count in a healthful way. This month, in my role as a March of Dimes mom, the discussion is around healthy eating and weight gain during pregnancy. Here are some of my key recommendations for healthful pregnancy habits; many are applicable to the non-pregnant crowd as well.

Memory, Motherhood, & Celebration

tiffany-pendant.bmpToday, Kate shares how she chose to celebrate her awakening to motherhood:

“The first two years of motherhood were unexpectedly hard for me. I say unexpected because I had sailed through pregnancy and fully expected motherhood to be an enhancement to an already full and happy life, not a fundamental or in some ways jarring change. It sounds naive to write that now, but at the time I was caught totally unprepared for the nagging sense of sadness, emotional disequilibrium, and whispering worry that I was an inadequate and insufficiently loving mother.

“As we anticipated and planned the homebirth of our 3rd child, my husband and I quickly realized that aside from preparing ourselves, our gear, and our hearts for the arrival of a new baby, we had two boys to prepare as well.

C-Section Recovery Tips

bed.jpgToday, Carole Arsenault of Newborn Nurses shares tips for C-section recovery:

“One out of every three infants born in Massachusetts in 2006 was delivered by caesarean section, according to a state report released on February 13, 2008. This increase can be attributed to many factors, such as advanced maternal age, increases in obesity and diabetes, obstetrician’s fear of lawsuits, and parental desire to schedule the delivery to plan around older children. Whether you have a planned or unexpected C-section, here are some practical tips to aid your recovery post-surgery.

Pampered Protection

belli.jpgAs the cool weather sets in, so do the colds and skin care battles, making it ever more important to find safe, nourishing body products for mom and babe. And Belli delivers the goods. Providing “pampered protection” pregnancy, baby, and motherhood body products that repair and relax, Belli takes safety seriously, first scouring medical research findings and consulting with physicians, chemists, nurses, aestheticians, doulas, and prenatal massage therapists, then excluding any ingredients linked to pre and postnatal problems. My top restorative picks include their Surgical Scar Reducer and Body Firming Serum, but their Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer is a must have for moms on the go. This gel does its double duty gently yet powerfully, and the colorful microbeads fascinate Laurel into keeping her hands pristine when we're out and about.

Belly Relief

honeydew.jpgI love body products - the delicious smells, the pretty packaging, the pampered feeling. And there’s a cool new collection on the block in Honeydew, a paraben, preservative, dye, and fragrance free line packed with natural goodness and formulated especially for expecting and new moms. Creamy in composition and yummy in natural scent, my top picks are the Balmy Mommy belly balm, which offers on the go itch relief via its glide on applicator, and the C-Scar Therapy cream, which helps reduce the appearance of surgical scars, partially thanks to - of all things - onion extract.

You Glow Girl

glowmama.jpgAs someone who consumes mostly water, fruit juices tend to be too sweet for me, and I found myself especially intolerant of intense sugar levels during pregnancy. And whether you’re pregnant, nursing, or actively chasing kids, here's a tasty new way to keep hydrated and vitamin infused. Glow Mama is more like flavored water than a fruit beverage, and this natural composition is low in calories and high in essential vitamins and minerals; among them, impressive amounts of fiber, vitamin C, and folic acid. The drink isn’t meant to replace your daily vitamin, but as someone who - despite the best of intentions - routinely forgets to take a multivitamin, Glow Mama is a great way to pack in nutrients on the go.

Daily Did Do's

rookiemoms.jpgNew mamahood sometimes seems akin to stepping into an amnesic vortex: you feel as if you’re spinning in a whirlwind of chaos and activity, but at the end of the day, you can’t recall how you spent your hours. Or rather, perhaps it’s just that the “little things” you’ve done all day don’t seem as noteworthy as your frantic working girl episodes. Never mind that many of those little things result in keeping another human being alive.

TLC in Tandem

susanbrown.jpgIt’s no surprise why babies get showered with goodies, but moms need attention too - particularly postpartum - and that’s why I dig Susan Brown’s Baby. This collection of rich yet gentle, paraben-free body products ensures that mom and baby get their TLC in tandem; the mom products focus on nurturing the belly and feet, while the baby line includes items for bath, diapering, and relaxation. I particularly love the SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion; the composition is creamy yet mild, fragrance-free, and packed with cocoa, shea, and jojoba butters to keep your kid’s skin hydrated. Style Lift from the LOFT

anntaylorloft.jpgOne challenge for pregnant working women is finding maternity clothing that is stylish and well constructed, but doesn’t break the bank. When I was pregnant with Laurel and hunting for reasonably priced work pieces, I saw a troubling amount of highly flammable polyester construction that was ill reminiscent of the marching band and color guard (yes, color guard) uniforms I wore in high school. Designers are, thankfully, catching on to the need for affordable maternity style, and among the newcomers is the recently launched Ann Taylor LOFT maternity line.

A Much Needed Push

push.bmp

Ever since I stopped nursing and gained back 10 unshakeable pounds, I’ve sporadically toyed with different fitness options. The gym proved too expensive and time consuming (transit time, waiting for equipment, etc.), and as much as I love walking, it doesn’t impact the same way a targeted workout does. So when the folks at PUSH offered me an opportunity to test their customized personal training DVDs, I was both intrigued and intimidated. The intimidation passed quickly though; PUSH’s concise yet comprehensive workouts will make novices to gurus alike feel the burn in a friendly, efficient, and economical manner.

BOLD Boston

BOLD.jpg

Every mama’s birth story is unique, sometimes totally off plan (I traded a two page natural childbirth plan for an emergency C-section), and yet utterly connected to one another. And all through September, moms around the world can connect via BOLD (Birth On Labor Day), a global grassroots movement that uses the arts to promote education, dialogue, and action around maternity care issues. Locally, on September 28 & 29, Karen Brody’s play, Birth, will be performed at the Cambridge Family YMCA Theatre, with an open conversation directly to follow. Tickets start at $25 ($12.50 for students); proceeds will benefit maternity care organizations.

Want to win tickets? Email us by midnight tonight and name one of the organizations that BOLD Boston will benefit; we'll draw one winner, who will receive 2 tickets to the Saturday, 9/29 1pm performance.

Tone That Tummy

mamamio.gif

With the exception of those traipsing the Hollywood fantastic, most mamas don’t have the resources for the personal trainers, nutritionists, and/or (ahem) cosmetic assistance required to flaunt an awe inspiring postpartum tummy at the beach. And while we advocate and celebrate whatever small self care efforts you can make in terms of good food and fitness (be it short walks or intervals of exercise), you probably also could stand (and deserve) to have a little extra help of the non-invasive cosmetic variety.

Body, Soul, & Baby

gaudet.jpg

As often happens with women, I was optimally dedicated to self-care when I was pregnant. I fueled my body with good food, swam laps several times a week up until the day before Laurel was born (the lifeguards always looked terrified when they saw me waddling up to the lanes), and calmed my mind with plenty of stretching and breathing.

Even so, it wasn’t until the last few years – during which I faced the major life stressors of becoming a parent, losing loved ones, and experiencing the mother of all professional upheavals – where I really started thinking about mind-body connection practices, largely thanks to the therapist Jon and I started seeing after Laurel was born, and from what I have learned via Jon’s dedication to mindfulness practices.

Make an Impression

bellyvita.gif

During my last trimester with Laurel, I often couldn't believe that my belly had ever been flat. And I have moments now when I see pregnant women and am amazed that I ever carried that giant, fantastic belly. It makes me wish that I had captured tangible, tactile evidence of my pregnant self.

If we go the baby road again, I plan on molding my form with the Belly Imprint Spa Treatment & Sculpting Kit by Belly Vita. A beautifully packaged go-to gift for expecting moms, this kit offers a multimodal means to indulge the senses, calm the mind, create an extraordinary keepsake, and connect with your partner before the chaos begins. The process takes about 30 minutes and involves massaging soothing oil onto the belly, prepping then wrapping the sculpting fabric on the belly and chest, and relaxing while the sculpting fabric sets. (Note: This is the perfect time to solicit a hand and foot rub.) Once dry, your belly mold can continue to evolve into a work of art with simple paint, pretty paper decoupage accents, and/or ribbon or other embellishments.

How Far Do We Go?

nyt.gif

When it comes to medical decision-making I tend to be as anti-treatment as they come (sometimes to the point of forgetting about the benefits of over the counter medication), but I also am fortunate to be a healthy woman, and one who was able to conceive naturally.

Today, in the New York Times article “Prospect of womb transplant raises hopes and red flags,” Roni Rabin reports on a study to appear in the academic journal Obstetrics & Gynecology. The article details a protocol used by doctors at New York Downtown Hospital that resulted in the harvesting of wombs from eight brain-dead human donors. While the medical team asserts that no immediate plans are in the works for a uterine transplant, the mere possibility has created a flurry in the medical community, as well as for women whose medical conditions currently preclude the possibility of bearing a child on their own.

I was both fascinated and troubled by this article. How far are we willing to go to have babies?

All classes are available on a drop in basis and discounted 10-class passes are available. Sane Fitness

sanefitness.gif

Back in the day (i.e., my early 20’s) I was really fit; as in, hit the gym at 5:30am on my way to work fit. Not surprisingly, those days are long gone and despite my efforts to keep up my gym membership, our relocation and my new schedule have made the gym less accessible.

Imagine my delight, then, when I learned about the stylish and portable Sane Fitness QuickStart Deck ($24.95). Comprised of 3 workouts (with a suggested plan for a 6-week full-body program) that can be done at home with minimal equipment or at the gym, this series is perfect for busy mamas. You’ll need to start with 20 minutes of cardio (does chasing a toddler around the house count?); otherwise each workout involves a mere 11 moves (6 full body exercises, 2 abdominals, 3 stretches). It can’t get faster than that. In the next 6 months Sane Fitness also will roll out a complete fitness deck with 6 months of workouts, and "Sane Preggers," a workout system designed specifically for expecting mamas.

Use the coupon code “FitMama” to receive a 20% discount at Sane Fitness directly; also available at Amazon.

Serenity Now

doula.jpg

What a pity that my food poisoning induced “labor” precluded use of our doula (the services of which were available gratis via participation in a doula study at our hospital). As first time parents, my husband and I loved the idea of having a childbirth expert in the room to take the pressure off of Jon, and keep our multi-paged (!) birthing plan on track.

Of course, the birthing plan and doula went out the window when I had my emergency C-section. So while I am unable to provide a personal reference, a dear mama friend from Cambridge – who searched long and hard for her doula – offers high praise for the following resource:

For Heavenly Mamas

angelmilk.jpg

Isn’t it ironic that as a nursing mama you spend so much time nourishing your babe that you barely have time to eat? Angel Milk offers a yummy supplement to the foods and vitamins you do manage to consume via their all-natural nutritional shake. Especially formulated for pregnant and nursing mamas, Angel Milk is fortified with vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K, folic acid, and blended with minerals like calcium, iron and magnesium. It’s also high in protein and low in sugar.

Although I’m neither pregnant nor nursing at the moment, I’m already a fan of Angel Milk. The texture and flavors (chocolate, strawberry, pina colada) are smooth, the subtle sweetness level is spot on, and it's a great, compact way to pack in nutrients.

Angel Milk is sold in 14 oz cans (14 servings, $19.99) or in individual packets (12 for $29.99). The company also offers an inexpensive starter kit ($9.99) that includes one individual packet of each of their flavors + the Angel Milk shaker cup (with liquid measurement markings and a cap for easy blending).

To Be or Not to Be in Pain?

globemag.bmp

Before I officially become a week behind… I have been meaning to mention a feature in last Sunday’s Globe Magazine that struck ire in the heart of the pro-natural childbirth mama who sent me the reference. “The mother lode of pain,” written by Dr. Darshak Sanghavi of U. Mass Medical (July 23, 2006) is decidedly pro-epidural. Dr. Sanghavi notes that “pain [is]…an utterly, primitive thing, a vestige of insect and reptilian brains" and that "reliance on pain to create meaning during childbirth indicates a constricted imagination.” Ouch.

Please feel welcome to comment on your thoughts on, or experience with, natural or assisted childbirth.

Parenting Naturally

While I love trundling around little boutiques on foot, sometimes one stop shopping is the way to go. Boston area mama Jeniphir Taylor-McIntire, a sales consultant for Natural Family Boutique, recently pointed me to her online store.

Natural Family Boutique offers eco-friendly products to support families from conception to weaning. The site offers Haba toys (my favorite toy line, period!) and apparel for babes, indulgent jewelry, spa, and home items for mamas, and lots of products for new parents (breastfeeding, baby care, and cloth diapering supplies, pregnancy, birth and postpartum products, books & CDs, slings). The site also offers resource material on breastfeeding, pregnancy and birth, nutrition, parenting, natural living, and activism.

Beating the Baby Blues

postpartum.jpg

Tending to a newborn is incredibly hard work; imagine trying to fulfill your loving duties while suffering from postpartum depression.

While awareness about postpartum depression has gained traction in recent years, many moms still suffer without treatment; not surprisingly, kids suffer too, Carey Goldberg of The Boston Globe (July 5, 2006) reports in “Pediatricians urged to focus on moms, too.”

The upside is that recent pediatric research suggests that responses to two simple questions: "Have you lost interest and pleasure in doing things lately?" and "Have you been feeling down?" are useful predictors of postpartum depression. The timeliness of diagnosis is particularly important given other promising research indicating that if a mother’s depression resolves within three months of treatment, her child’s psychiatric symptoms also tend to dissipate.

Break Out the Tools

As I was researching the issue of toddler hitting, I came across another interesting resource, “The discipline tool kit: Successful strategies for every age,” on BabyCenter. The article describes ground rules to set the stage for discipline success and follows with implementation tools and useful descriptions of process and application, from birth to 8 years old.

BabyCenter offers substantial topic resources for parents from pre-pregnancy on.
