Join Me for Milk + Bookies!

peter-rabbit.pngI love when literacy, fun, and philanthropy intersect, and if you and your kids enjoy the same, come join me on Saturday the 26th (11am) at the North Shore Mall in Peabody for a special event at babyGap. I'm honored to be the guest reader of The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit (I just received my copy to practice for the reading and it is a gorgeous book!) as part of Milk + Bookies' in-store book drives to benefit local Boys & Girls Clubs around the country. Milk + Bookies is a non-profit that encourages kids to feel the joy of giving back through a passion for books; please bring a gently used book (or 5!) with you for donation and come say hello! The event runs from 11am - noon and I would love to meet you!

Dear Boston Mamas: North Shore Resources

diaper-lab.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas query comes from Sarah via the Boston Mamas Facebook page (congrats on your impending arrival Sarah!). Boston Mamas contributing writer Jennifer (a North Shore mom of twins) kindly is fielding Sarah's question:

Hi Boston Mamas. We live north of Boston, but I was wondering if you have any resources on finding twin classes, of any kind, and/or cloth diaper information/classes. We have a 21-month-old now and twins on the way in April. Thanks in advance!

The Good Kind of Drool

drool-cupcake.jpgMy friends Sheri and Eli Gurock of Magic Beans appear to not sleep. Which, while probably a little inconvenient for them, results in impressive things like the Drool Baby Expo happening next week (May 15) at the Cyclorama in Boston. Geared towards anyone who wishes to check out stylish, functional baby gear up close and personal, attendees will also have the chance to win cool prizes, enjoy refreshments, and walk away with a killer gift bag. And how cool is this? My peeps at Magic Beans are offering up a pair of VIP tickets to one of you awesome readers. Here's how to enter to win:

Seven Indie Favorites

lester-harrys.jpgToday, Miriam (also of Other Pieces of Me) shares seven favorite local indie shops (that have saved her on more than one Saturday):

It's not entirely uncommon for me to wake up on a Saturday morning and realize that my son is scheduled to attend a birthday party later that day. I imagine I'm not the only one who has encountered this scenario, right? Thankfully, there's no shortage of independent stores in almost every corner of the city of Boston that are replete with great last-minute selections. Here are seven of my favorites...and bonus points if you pick up something for the next birthday party that's coming your way!

Take the Cake

gamewright-take-the-cake.jpgToday, Evadne shares a great game from a Newton-based company (also, check out below for details on a sale today and tomorrow!):

I recently played Gamewright's Take the Cake with my kids and was reminded what good wholesome fun board games are. Take the Cake's tag line describes the game perfectly: a sweet game of shakes, shapes & cupcakes. The idea behind the game is to decorate cupcake cards with colorful wooden shapes that sprinkle out of a shaker. If you complete the toppings on your turn, you collect the cupcake card -- that is, you take the cake. The player with the most cards wins the game.

Five Ways to Shop Local

etsy-soap.jpgThough I do enjoy shopping, I've admittedly been turning a blind eye to the onslaught of big box Black Friday pitches I've been receiving -- partially because this marketing approach seems awfully tiresome, and partially because I'm a big fan of supporting local indie businesses. As in past years, we plan on adhering to a pretty minimal approach to holiday shopping, but when I do get around to it, I'll start by turning to what's immediately around us. I wanted to share some great ways to shop local -- there's so much talent that warrants your attention!

Two Little Monkeys

two-little-monkeys.jpgToday, Kate shares a great find for relocating your outgrown kid's clothing and gear:

If you're like me, you occasionally find yourself looking for good ways to pass along the clothes, toys, and gear that your kids have outgrown. Due to generous grandmothers, my daughter's dresser is often overflowing, and I search out ways to share the bounty. Two Little Monkeys, a new children's resale shop in the Union Square neighborhood of Somerville, is a great resource for anyone looking to either unload or pick up clothing, books, toys, and gear (including high-end strollers at terrific prices) for babies and children.

Pottery Painting at Barefoot Books

barefoot-books.JPGToday, Jennifer recommends a visit to Barefoot Books for more than books:

Given the variable nature of New England weather (cue today's monsoon...), it's always good to have some indoor activity ideas in your back pocket. My kids and I recently enjoyed a lovely afternoon at the Barefoot Books pottery studio in Concord. Our mission was to try out their newish paint-your-own pottery studio (it was added to the store's offerings this past spring), and oh, did we have a grand ol' time.

5 Fun Weekend Picks

mass-marketplace.jpgDoesn't it feel fantastic to get to Friday? Here are 5 fun picks to consider this weekend:

1. I'm all about supporting local, so hooray for the New England farmers, specialty food producers, and artisans who will be showing at the Massachusetts Marketplace Festival at the Gardens at Elm Bank in Wellesley.

2. Get your groove on at the Boston Urban Music Fest.

A Couple of Weekend Picks

boston-handmade.jpgThis week has been crazy so I'm behind on sifting through my calendar pitches. However, I wanted to share two events that have been on my radar for some time now. Indie artist collective Boston Handmade (how awesome is this Zen monkey?) will host a marketplace in Union Square tomorrow, and the Lowell Folk Festival runs today through the weekend. We've taken Laurel in years past and it's a terrific event. Happy weekend!

A Drool-icious Baby Expo

drool.jpgI've written before that Eli and Sheri Gurock of Magic Beans are some of the busiest (and kindest) people around, so I was impressed to hear about an amazing expo they're bringing to Boston on May 31. Debuting at the Seaport Hotel, the Drool Baby Expo offers expecting, new, and seasoned parents (or anyone else who digs cool baby stuff) the opportunity to check out the latest in baby gear, partake in refreshments and complimentary spa services, engage in demos, workshops, and consultations, and enjoy giveaways, freebies, and discounts (plus, all attendees will receive an awesome gift bag). And how cool is this? The kind folks at Magic Beans are offering one of you awesome readers a pair of VIP tickets to Drool*! Below is how to enter to win, plus additional insider info on why you want to buy a ticket even if you don't win. I'll be drooling over things for Violet at Drool, so please come say hello if you see me!

For The Shopping Mama

moms-nite-out.jpgLast month, I actually had to ask someone when Mother's Day was, which seemed comically fitting. However, once informed, I was thrilled to connect with several local establishments who are hosting fun Mother's Day events. I'll be sharing these events over the next few days, and first up is a pick for moms who love to engage in a little retail therapy. This Thursday (May 5), moms around the country will enjoy a collective night out via Mom's Nite Out, and I'm pleased to partner again this year with participating Mom's Nite Out site, the Atrium Mall. In addition to hitting favorite stores (I could use a visit to Anthropologie, J. Crew, and LOFT now that I'm done with maternity clothes...), at this event (4-7pm) attendees can peruse fashion, beauty, health, and home design tables, and pick up or enter to win various goodies and prizes.

Capone's Chocolate Covered Figs

capone-figs.jpgToday, Jules shares a fantastic local chocolate find:

Mothers' Day is creeping up and while I'm constantly telling my husband to never, ever bring me chocolate for occasions such as this, this year I do want just one thing -- and it happens to be chocolate. This is the kind of chocolate that I will eat guilt free and will happily share with my kids so they can experience the beauty of quality chocolate made with natural and fresh ingredients -- not the kind that sits on a shelf in a box for weeks (months? years?) before the foil is torn away.

The Book Rack

the-book-rack.jpgWhile I adore the community feel and eco-friendliness of public libraries, and the shiny newness and convenience of large bookstores, my current happy medium is the independent used bookstore. And The Book Rack is one of those little gems I've walked by a million times but never paid much attention to until recently. I was surprised to learn that The Book Rack has roots dating back to the 1960s and is a network of independently owned bookstores, with about 100 stores across the country, including five locations in Massachusetts.

Local Knitting Favorites

sheep-street-yarn-shop.jpgOne thing that I quickly learned with Laurel is that her level of content is completely different depending on whether I'm doing something not-so-present such as, say, checking my e-mail vs. crafting alongside her. Of course, her favorite kind of time is when we're working on the same project (e.g., we're finishing a really crazy quilt right now -- Laurel has become impressively facile with my sewing machine!), but when she's working on something like latch hook or pot holders, I'm kind of left hanging. So I've been thinking of -- and getting excited about -- revisiting knitting.

Dear Boston Mamas: Maternity Clothes Shopping on a Budget

mighty-aphrodite.gifToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from CM via e-mail:

Two Local Stylish Finds

lady-luxe.jpgToday, parent educator Hetti Wohlgemuth of Alphabet Soup 4 Parents takes a departure from parenting advice to recommend two stylish local finds:

Given my apparent talent for spilling black coffee, chocolate ice cream, and ketchup on myself, I don't like spending lots of money on clothing. For me, it's not worth it to ruin expensive clothes and it's good to tighten the spending belt when a bad economy threatens us. That said, I still like to shop, dress well, and look professional. Here are two Boston area shops to try that won't break the bank.

The Cutest Panda Mugs

panda-mugs-1.JPGThough in general I advocate for less of the unnecessary, every now and then something material catches my eye and refuses to budge from my periphery. Such was the case last weekend when Laurel and I were in Porter Square, picking up some Japanese pastries and browsing Tokai. I circled away from these ridiculously cute Japanese panda mugs (note the adorable tail blob on the back of the mug) about five times, trying to convince myself out of buying them. Which of course meant I needed to buy them.

Birthday Giveaway: Diaper Lab

diaper-lab.jpgIn the last few years, it's been fantastic to watch the evolution of cloth diapering (we cloth diapered Laurel in her first six months with traditional diapers, liners, and covers that were a tad challenging to keep in place with our squirmy one). And it's especially fantastic that there are stores such as Somerville-based Diaper Lab that are committed to educating parents about the ease and green goodness of modern cloth diapering via free in-store workshops and an online shop replete with diapering products as well as slings, diaper bags, nursing products, and other goodies. As part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Diaper Lab generously is gifting one lucky winner with a GroVia diapering set that includes the GroVia Experience Package + BioSoakers ($83 value). Birthday Giveaway: Olivia Browning

olivia-browning-paris-bucket-bag.jpgIt was a pretty remarkable day when I moved from my big (way overpacked) diaper bag to cute, compact bags that -- save the occasional snack cup or activity book -- primarily held my stuff. And whether you've been in that zone for a while or are approaching it, this chic Paris Bucket Bag ($165 value) would likely serve you well. Kindly gifted by Charlestown-based brick and mortar (and online) indie boutique Olivia Browning as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, this bag is punchy in color, lined with a washable interior and handy pockets, and features gold hardware to up the fancy factor; you'll no doubt feel happy carrying this bag, whether or not the bottom is lined with a few Cheerios. Local & Lovingly Cultivated

monkey-shine-studio.jpgThis week, I've been utterly grateful for all things local and lovingly cultivated as I've marveled over the first week's offerings from our CSA share (we signed on with Parker Farm). It's only fitting then that I'm all over these weekend events that will include more local and lovingly cultivated creative awesomeness: the Coolidge Corner Arts Festival, the Cambridge River Festival, and the Dedham Square Music & Art Festival. Mommies Who Shop!

mommieswhoshop.jpgAt last year's Mommies Who Shop! I purchased a sparkly statement ring (for a mere $20) that continues to reign as my most commented on, coveted-by-strangers-and-friends piece of jewelry. And this year's MWS shows (May 20 in Weston and June 3 in Hamilton) undoubtedly will offer more covetable treasures. This boutique marketplace will feature indie designers offering their goods at sale prices, hors d'oeuvres and wine, spa services, goodie bags, and more. Yummy. Ticket worthy.

House of Windsor

windsor-button.jpgToday, Kate shares a great lead for fledgling and experienced crafters:

My mother was once a knitter and a sewer, as were my grandmothers. I dabbled in both a bit as a child and young adult, but I lacked the creativity and patience to give myself the time to let the skills grow and become something more interesting and more meaningful. I'd get interested, buy the supplies, work on a few projects that were over my head, get frustrated with my mistakes, and drop it all, once again convinced of my own inability to make anything beautiful or useful with my own hands. But I retained the familial sense that fabric crafts could be something ennobling and meditative, something worth pursuing if I could ever get myself into the right frame of mind for them.

Craftastic CRAFTBOSTON

ananda-khalsa.jpgThere's so much creative, organic mojo going on this weekend in Boston. In addition to the Down:2:Earth sustainable living expo, consider CRAFTBOSTON, which runs today through Sunday at the World Trade Center. CRAFTBOSTON will feature 200 talented artists featuring lovingly handcrafted wares. Among those showing, I am utterly intrigued by Northampton artist Ananda Khalsa's tiny paintings set in metal jewelry (shown). Though definitely not for the faint of budget, Khalsa's little treasures look of heirloom quality. And there are also plenty of beautiful creations to be had at CRAFTBOSTON for under $100.

Dear Boston Mamas: Summer in Boston

travelers.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from Jan via e-mail:

We are visiting Boston this summer (from Ireland) with 3 kids (12, 10 and 5) and are looking for recommended kid-friendly restaurants, some free activities, best ice-cream, best toy shops, etc. We will have 10 days in Cape Cod then 10 days in Concord. We will have a car, and the house we are staying at in Concord is close to the train station so the plan would be to take the train into Boston.

Indie Gems in Concord

concord-book-shop.gifToday, Jennifer shares some indie gems in Concord :

“Between this season’s mountain of catalogs filling my mailbox, the incessant ads for Black Friday door-buster deals (2 am, really?), and the stream of online price-slashing deals, I have found myself craving a good old-fashioned stroll-down-Main-Street-non-mall-shopping experience. So last week a girlfriend and I perused the independent shops in Concord Center and it was...AWESOME. I'm a huge fan of the convenience of big retailers and online shopping, but you've just gotta love the independent businesses that are passionate about what they have to offer. Kiss My Face

m-lekkakos.jpgToday, Kristin shares a review of the M. Lekkakos Spa in Wenham:

“When I lived in LA, I found that what most people consider life’s little luxuries back East were a necessity out West. For example, I always managed to find time for mani/pedis, I bought expensive sunglasses because they were not just a fashion accessory but mandatory eye protection (that I wore every day without fail), and with all the smog, I always found the time and money for regular facials. Facials are my favorite thing, but as a working mother of two boys, I find it near impossible to get them done these days. Plus, finding a good aesthetician is no small task.

Buffalo Exchange

buffalo-exchange.pngDavis Square’s bargain retail profile recently kicked it up a notch with the addition of Buffalo Exchange (on the same block as Poor Little Rich Girl and Good Will). Giving national chain a good name, Buffalo Exchange allows for direct sale or trade of used clothing and accessories, and carries both classic pieces (such as the J. Crew print dress I scored for $23.50...sweet!) and quirkier ones. The two-level store currently offers more goods for women (including rows upon rows of shoes downstairs), though there are some racks for men. Laurel loves treasure hunting with me in Davis; she only requests that this and other stores start carrying used kid’s clothing.

And from November 6 – 8 you can access the wares of 300 fine artists at the Boston Christmas Festival at the Seaport World Trade Center. Also, given my obsession with gingerbread last year (and, admittedly, cake competitions on cable), the gingerbread house competition (of which this Fenway Park replica was a winner) seems particularly intriguing. I Heart Marathon Sports

marathon-sports.gifPoor customer service is perplexing, frustrating, and amazingly rampant in the retail industry, so I’m always thrilled to discover a store – such as Marathon Sports – that does it right. In need of a new pair of running shoes in advance of the Gobble, Gobble, Gobble run, I visited Marathon Sports with Laurel on Sunday. I was approached immediately (in a good way) by a friendly staffer, and after observing my feet and walking gait (in socks, pants rolled up) and asking about brand preferences, the staffer made easy work of the sea of sneaker options on the wall and pulled his two top recommendations, the second of which fit beautifully and felt great as I test trotted around the store.

Birthday Giveaway: Heart & Stone Jewelry

heart-and-stone.jpgOne reason I've never purchased a traditional mother's ring or necklace (such as the seven-stone mother’s ring my siblings and I gifted my mom on her 60th birthday, when she was definitely done) is the permanence factor. Girl’s Morning Out

tables-to-teapots.jpgToday, Jennifer recommends a couple of spots in Acton to enjoy a girl’s morning out:

“I recently rediscovered one of my favorite little local spots for bargain shopping: Tables to Teapots in West Acton. It’s a well-organized home furnishings consignment shop with antiques, retro décor, some newer yet gently used items, and one-of-a-kind finds…including the great vintage cuff bracelet I just picked up for a mere $8.

Where Old is New

fridabee.jpgToday, Kate reports on local kid's resale shop Frida Bee:

“Everyone knows that new parents are showered with baby clothes - onesies, booties, pajamas, playsuits - all adorable, many inappropriate to the season, all quickly grown out of. Everyone also knows that the gifts dry up as the baby becomes a toddler, but that the need for new clothing and shoes continues unabated as your little one grows like a beanstalk.

Just Call Me Maven

method.bmpSomeone told me that April typically is crazy as people come out of hibernation and get ready to party. This certainly has been the case for me in the realm of scheduled events, and last night kicked off Chapter 1 of a crazy but fabulous April, via an event where I played hostess to some of my family, friends, and colleagues as a Boston Method Maven. It was a terrific evening of socializing, getting the dirt on chemical-free cleaning, and eco-crafting with environmental lifestyle guru (and fellow Korean!) Danny Seo.

“Reading the comics has always been one of my pleasures. Glass Treasures

lalo.bmpToday, Kate reports on a local purveyor of glass treasures:

“With the holidays long gone and as the grey of winter persists, finding ways to keep shine and brightness in life becomes all the more important. Colorful accessories can add sparkle and happiness, and a small store in the Back Bay offers a beautiful selection of vibrant glass jewelry - rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, hair ornaments - that is both fun and elegant without being overly expensive. Lalo Treasures is a treat for the eyes: the cozy store is bright, welcoming, and colorful. Not to mention that Lalo's blend of materials makes for unusually durable jewelry (customers are encouraged to try on anything they want), making it terrific for moms with babes equally drawn to pretty baubles.”

Soft as Velvet

velvetfly.gif

Take this lead from Kate, and enjoy a shopping trip outside of the mall:

“Let's face it: malls offer reliability and convenience, but isn't it nice to try something new and different? Or, as in the case of the latest and greatest addition to Boston's increasingly interesting universe of vintage fashion, old and different? The Velvet Fly, a small, elegant, and inviting boutique located in Boston's North End, offers a range of designs both vintage and new, for anyone interested in going slightly off the beaten path for clothing, jewelry, lingerie, and handbags. Featuring items most appropriate for days at work and evenings out, The Velvet Fly caters to customers who enjoy fashion but don't enjoy pretension. In this era of the mega-mall, check out The Velvet Fly and appreciate the intimacy of a small-scale shopping experience.”

Poor Little Rich Girl

poorlittlerichgirl.bmp

The other week Kate and I met up for lunch in Davis Square, and we were thrilled to check out Poor Little Rich Girl’s new home on Elm Street. It’s just steps from their former Highland Avenue location, but they’ve upped their square footage by leaps and bounds and the new space suits them well. In addition to an extensive collection of designer & vintage second-hand women’s clothing, shoes, and accessories, they now also carry a small selection of men and baby clothing. Baby items are hand picked – not consigned - by shop owner Meredith, baby gift items are forthcoming, and the shop is looking to consign maternity if your shop is closed, as it were. Their website is currently down, but you can stop in Monday (12 - 6pm), Tuesday - Saturday (12 - 7pm), and Sunday (12 - 5 pm).

Destination Maternity

destinationmaternity.jpg

Sometimes (particularly after a stretch of indulgent eating) serving as a fashion consultant to a friend is more fun than shopping for yourself. Yesterday I had great fun hitting the maternity pavement with a girlfriend desperately in need of bumpworthy business attire.

After checking out Target and Kohl’s, both of which have a few business separates options but are better suited for casual wear, we hit the jackpot at Destination Maternity in Natick. Surprisingly not overwhelming in square footage, this one-stop shopping location includes retail areas each for Motherhood, Mimi Maternity, A Pea in the Pod, Destination Maternity, and Edamame Spa, which ensures satisfying a range of budgets and clothing styles, whether you are in the market for a $10 basic vs. $300 designer dress.

Bird By Bird

birdbybird.gif

I’m a sucker for cute kids’ boutiques and since opening in the fall, I’ve been keeping my eye on Bird by Bird in Inman Square. Originally debuting with a modest selection of products conjuring a bit of a spare, upscale boutique feel that intimidated some readers who wrote in, Bird by Bird has since impressively expanded its offerings to feature an array of stylish products from both national and independent (including local) designers; the shop now feels decidedly warm and welcoming. Some particularly cool finds include an impressive, hip collection of screen printed and appliquéd tees and onesies (various designers), beautiful mixed fabric creations from Lorna Lowe Custom Couture and Beary Basics, and the snuggly soft hoodie cardigans by Angel Dear. Apparently, they also have started carrying the stylish, locally crafted baby slings by gOzOzO, in designs exclusive to Bird By Bird.

Bird By Bird also periodically offers programming such as fitness and baby signing; click here for their latest announcements. They also have future plans for an online store.

Super Sneaker Prices

newbalance.gif

The other day, Auntie Sha-Sha left her sneakers at our house; this was a major event for Laurel. She wanted to know all about why the shoes were there, what we could put in them, and how fast Sharon could run when she was in them (answer: pretty fast). Ultimately, she wanted a pair just like them.

Laurel’s been in need of more weather appropriate footwear (she’s still been roaming around in her fall kicks) so we decided to check out the New Balance Factory Store this past weekend.

This store is definitely worth a visit. The infant/toddler section is smaller than the kid, women, and men sections (there were about 8 different infant/toddler shoe styles to choose from), but Laurel loved the sneakers she picked out and they apparently fit great (I have never seen her jump around in a store like that before…). They also were a mere $14.99.

Rock On

cribrock.gif

Who says good clean fun can’t be cool?

Crib Rock Couture’s ultra hip line of tees and onesies breathes new life into classic nursery rhymes via clever infusion of music and pop culture lingo. These punchy nursery rhyme concert tees are printed on super comfy, vividly colored fabrics, including a fabulous new line of Supima (100% Pima) cotton thermal tees. Laurel went loco over the blissfully soft, perfectly constructed Hey Diddle Diddle tee (shown; $40). She couldn’t get the tee on fast enough (a major coup, given that lately she’s preferred running around the house in various states of undress…), or resist pointing out the characters and singing the tee lyrics repeatedly through the day.

Crib Rock’s collection currently includes designs to fit lil’ rockers from 6 months to 14 years. Coordinated sweatpants and clam diggers for the under 2 crowd are forthcoming, and come spring, adult tees will make a comeback. A fabulously soft tee or tank designed especially for hip mamas is in the works. Stay tuned!

Crib Rock Couture is available locally at Bump (Beacon Hill, Boston) and Oh Baby Love (Salem); alternatively, shop the online boutique and receive 10% off your order when you use the code “BostonMamas” at checkout.

Pooptastic

logo_maxima.gif

Okay, so this is an odd, ringing endorsement: Maxima Gift Center is so fabulous that it makes my daughter poop. Seriously.

As devoted readers know, I am a scientist by training and while these days I work more on intuition, my empirical persona can’t help but be impressed by repeated trials and consistent results.

So here’s what has happened the last five out of five times I have visited Maxima with Laurel. We arrive with her in the stroller. She strains against the straps and demands “Out! Mommy!” once we cross the entry. She bolts for the children’s section (resplendent with cool toys, stuffed animals, baby accessories, and her beloved, beloved books) and darts around excitedly (apparently too excitedly...), no doubt wondering how on earth such a place could be possible. I keep an eye on her while desperately straining to take in the stylish collection of bags, jewelry, body products, stationery, pottery, and other gifts that are just out of my reach.

And then, within 5 minutes, she poops. Like clockwork.

Maxima’s cool collection of regular retail and handcrafted gifts is better reflected in their physical stores (Waltham & Arlington) than online. Just be sure to bring your diaper bag when you visit.

More Bang for Your Book

logo_barefoot.gif

For an outing equally enriching for both parents and babes, head to Barefoot Books in Cambridge, where the wide array of books, toys, artwork, and magical spaces are imbued with rich artistry and mindful, creative storytelling for all ages. Books for younger babes offer the opportunity to learn about colors, numbers, and objects in smooth, soothing color palettes; books for older kids frame entertaining stories in the context of embracing diversity and culture, multigenerational bonds, and the value of creativity. The approach to storytelling is multimodal: many books include story CDs and offer an accompanying line of music CDs, artwork, and toys; the Folkmanis Puppet Line ($9.99-$21.99) allows kids to continue storytelling, even after you are done reading the words on the page.

Founded by two mamas who started their business out of home so they could continue to be close to their children, Barefoot Books is keen on helping other parents across the globe do the same. Their Barefoot Stallholder program provides support to develop home-based businesses; they also offer the opportunity to earn money and free products by hosting Barefoot Parties.

Check out their current schedule for free events and promotions; you’ll want to make a habit of stopping in for story hour, currently Fridays and Saturdays at 10:30am.

Isis Oasis

logo_isis.gif

Isis Maternity has become a one-stop mama tour de force in the Boston area. With locations in Brookline, Needham, and Arlington, Isis offers a host of programs such as childbirth education, parenting preparation, fitness, mom & baby groups, developmental groups, music and movement classes, workshops, massage & private consultations, and events.

I give Isis high marks for offering drop in playgroups for babes up to 3 years (separate sessions for immobile and mobile babes) given that committing to a weekly group can be tough. Drop in playgroups are free for members and $5 for non-members. See Isis’ website for details on the drop in playgroups and membership details. Membership fees are reasonable ($39 for first six months, $19 for every six month block following; members of Isis-affiliated organizations can receive a discounted membership) and include discounts on programs, products, and affiliated vendors.

Update 12/12/06: Membership fees are $7.50 per month (pay for the first four months upon joining; members of Isis-affiliated organizations can receive a discounted membership) and include discounts on programs, products, and affiliated vendors.

New Kids on the Block

logo_wildchild.jpg

I almost had a retail-induced heart attack when the mysterious block-length Wild Women in Arlington – an enormous space specializing in adventure retail for women – closed and evolved into Wild Women/Wild Child Outfitters. If that wasn’t enough to send the pocketbook aflutter, shortly thereafter Isis Maternity moved into the Broadway side of the Wild Women/Wild Child building (separate post on Isis to follow).

Wild Women/Wild Child is packed with tons of cute clothes, shoes, and accessories for babe and mom, gear, bedding, diaper bags, and toys. It’s a great spot to check out high-end strollers and luxurious baby bedding (from the delicious Dwell) before taking the financial plunge. There also is a little play area for kids; although it seems that the babes have the most fun running up and down the ramp between Wild Child and Isis.

logo_isis.gif

Isis requires a posting of its own, but briefly, the Arlington Isis location is peacefully designed with spaces for classes and groups; their compact retail area has a terrific selection of nursing and maternity wear, breastfeeding and solid food products, books, and toys. And of course they have plenty of diaper changing space and areas to nurse.

Second Time's A Charm

logo_secondtimearound.jpg

As a mama, it’s all about multi-tasking. So when you next hit a crisis inspired by a closet full of pre-mama clothing that no longer fits, head to Second Time Around. This boutique offers new and resale clothing – a place where you can sell your pre-mama clothes and boost up your wardrobe all in one stop. A mama friend can’t say enough good things about this shop’s chic collection and tech savvy approach (you can track the status of consignment pieces through your online account).

Check out Second Time Around’s website or contact one of their many area locations (3 Boston stores, Cambridge, Newton, Wellesley, Needham, Portsmouth, NH) for consignment details; however my mama pal did pass along the general rules that consignment pieces should be: 1) in season; 2) from within the last two years; and 3) from a fairly popular store/designer (although they rarely take anything from the Gap).
