Music For Every Mood

quartetsf.jpgIf you don't have anything special lined up for this weekend, don't fret. Our friends at The Regent are hosting the Grammy nominated Quartet San Francisco for a special Mother's Day family concert (Sunday, May 11 at 7pm). Whatever your musical mood, QSF will delight; this group is renowned for transcending the bounds of traditional chamber music by crossing over into everything from jazz to tango, pop to funk, blues to bluegrass, and gypsy swing to big band.

Healthy Kids Day

ymca.bmpI have a real place in my heart for the YMCA; I was at my fittest during my Y membership (in those childless days I’d hit the gym at 5:30am on my way to work), and I overcame my waterphobia (developed after losing a friend during a swimming outing in high school) via one of their adult swim classes. Tomorrow, at locations across the country, the YMCA will host Healthy Kids Day, a day of free activities designed to introduce kids to the fun of fitness. Also debuting at the event will be their new Healthy Family Home program, which offers simple tips to help families play, eat, and enjoy time together at home.

World Music will host four shows at the Somerville Theatre, and for the two evening shows (7pm), kids and adults are encouraged to come boogie in their pajamas.

Paint the Floor Red

mit.jpgToday, Kate reports on a local space where function and beauty intersect:

“We live our lives in spaces, most of them interior: offices, houses, schools, stores. The buildings in which we spend our days - some beautiful, many bland - each serve a purpose, keeping us warm and dry, allowing us to collaborate with our colleagues, sleep safely at night, shop, eat, reflect, communicate. Most buildings today are preoccupied with function, but every once in a while one finds a building in which some combination of architect, sponsor, and magic come together to create a space that is about nothing so much as whimsy, beauty, and the joy of being alive.

Green Inspiration

neflower.jpgTicketed outings were far and few between when I was a kid (given the family head count of 9), so I have a firm place in my heart for the New England Spring Flower Show, which I attended one year with my mom in near exclusivity (just me and one other sister). Running through Sunday, this year’s show offers grown-ups inspiration for eco-friendly gardening, and Friday’s Plantapalooza Children’s Festival is designed to cultivate appreciation of, and interaction with, nature via animal visitors, craft and gardening activities, music, and storytelling.

On March 9 (11 am) our friends at the Regent Theatre are hosting a special show featuring award winning musician Justin Roberts. Dear Edwina

edwina.jpgGrowing up in a local public school system with an amazing arts program, I always stood in awe of Walnut Hill; that there was a place for high schoolers to kick it up several more artistic notches. See for yourself this Saturday (2/16 at 2pm), when The Center for Arts in Natick hosts Walnut Hill's kiddie production, Dear Edwina: The Musical. Running about an hour and suitable for the older pre-K+ crowd, families will delight in seeing 13-year-old Edwina attempt to solve etiquette quandaries via an advice show.

Jewish Kiddie Rock

shirlala.jpgThis weekend, consider grooving to what I've dubbed “enrichment rock.” On Sunday at 10:30 am, Shira Kline will showcase her unique brand of "outrageously hip Jewish kiddie rock" at the ShirLala family concert at Temple Hillel B'nai Torah in West Roxbury. Kline energetically gets kids and grownups singing and dancing while offering a unique approach to Jewish education.

Downtown Holiday Fun

downtowncrossing.jpgHaving spent most of my college summers and winter breaks temping in downtown Boston, I really feel for Downtown Crossing's recent struggles, as various anchor retailers have left the area. This weekend, consider heading downtown to enjoy the holiday events that are part tradition/part revitalization effort. From 11am – 5pm you can take advantage of shopping deals, take a photo with Santa, enjoy refreshments, and visit the holiday petting zoo. And for little train enthusiasts, South Station’s holiday train exhibit is just one T stop (or brief walk) away, down Summer Street.

Many thanks to Rebecca from Medford, who wrote in about the nationwide Baby Pictures program, where parents can catch current (reduced admission) films with baby in tow. Massachusetts locations include Randolph, Lowell, Millbury, and Revere. Here’s what Rebecca had to say: “I went this week and last week with my 2-month old daughter and a friend and his 6-month old. The funny thing is that the [Revere] movie theater told us that we are their only two customers EVER!…While it is great to have the movie theater all to ourselves, I thought it was too good an opportunity to keep to myself.”

BOLD Boston

BOLD.jpg

Every mama’s birth story is unique, sometimes totally off plan (I traded a two page natural childbirth plan for an emergency C-section), and yet utterly connected to one another. And all through September, moms around the world can connect via BOLD (Birth On Labor Day), a global grassroots movement that uses the arts to promote education, dialogue, and action around maternity care issues. Locally, on September 28 & 29, Karen Brody’s play, Birth, will be performed at the Cambridge Family YMCA Theatre, with an open conversation directly to follow. Tickets start at $25 ($12.50 for students); proceeds will benefit maternity care organizations.

Want to win tickets? Email us by midnight tonight and name one of the organizations that BOLD Boston will benefit; we'll draw one winner, who will receive 2 tickets to the Saturday, 9/29 1pm performance.

One Swingin’ Night

isgm.jpg

The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum has held a sense of romance, drama, and intrigue for me ever since high school, during which time we went on a field trip and our humanities teacher shared that he fell in love with his to-be-wife in the famous courtyard, and the unbelievable Gardner musueum theft occurred.

If you have yet to visit this beautiful museum, check out tomorrow’s (Aug. 9) free One Swingin’ Night event. From 5-8 pm kids and adults can enjoy live music (by Latin music group Mango Blue), storytelling, and a musical scavenger hunt. Activities are best suited for kids age 8 and up.

Cool & Cultured

hopper.gif

For a cool and cultured respite from the rising temperatures, consider this indoor activity, per guest contributor Kate:

“As a parent, lazy mornings of reading the newspaper and leisurely afternoons at the movies quickly are replaced by kid-oriented adventures. However, one hallmark activity of adulthood - visiting art exhibitions - need not be left behind. Currently on view in a surprisingly stroller-friendly gallery, Edward Hopper offers a chance not only to learn about a major American painter - and appreciate his images of mid-20th century New England - but also to introduce your little one to the rituals of art viewing. The exhibit can be seen in 30 minutes or less, and the galleries offer plenty of baby/toddler distractions: interesting lighting, painted color, lots of people to watch. The official policy of the MFA is to allow strollers in all galleries except at peak crowding, but the practice in reality seems be that strollers are always permitted (and no ticket is required).”

Check with your local library about discounted admission passes!
