pinterest-paint-chalk.jpgOops, Friday completely ran away from me since I was head down in the cave working on a couple of deadines...goodbye May and welcome June! Following my January, February, March, and April best-of posts, today I'm rounding up the most helpful, insightful, favored-by-the-community posts from May. I hope you enjoy this month's roundup! Four Lovely Book Plates For Kids

bookplates-oiseaux-thumb.jpgToday, Lindsey (also of A Design So Vast) shares four lovely sources for book plates:

I love gifting personalized book plates. Book plates may seem, I realize, old-fashioned, but I adore them. They celebrate reading and speak to a child's deep desire to mark things as their own. My children loved choosing which of their books deserved book plates, and to this day, when I happen upon their book plated copies of Goodnight Moon or Make Way for Ducklings, tears spring to my eyes when I remember their chubby toddler hands smoothing the stickers into the books. The crooked angle at which some of these plates are adhered reminds me of their fierce determination to "do it my own self!"

12 Great Gifts for New Moms

salmon.jpgToday, Judy (also of Talking Thirty) shares 12 great gift ideas for new moms:

These days it seems that baby announcements from friends roll in about one per week and I spend my weekends cuddling squishy newborn after squishy newborn (no complaints here!). I've realized that often we focus on gifts for the new baby and sometimes forget the person who has been through the most -- the new mama! Here are my favorite gift ideas for new moms.

Giveaway Goodness: Gemvara

gemvara-1.jpgI have always loved the symbolism of birthstones. Arguably the best gift I ever gave (with my six siblings) was the seven-stone (!) birthstone ring I designed for my mom (whose wedding band had gone missing many years before). Subsequently, I was disappointed when I couldn't attend Gemvara's spring press preview a few weeks back. Headquartered in Boston, Gemvara offers lovely custom-made jewelry shopping online. And here's something delightful for you. Gemvara offered me a $250 gift card to create something beautiful and I wanted to turn around and offer this generous gift to one of you awesome readers. Here's how to enter to win:

Some Happy Things

SPRINGtoandfrom_150.jpgI've been so grateful for some happy things that have been happening around the internet, many of which went live last week while my brain was largely unable to focus on anything other than our dear city and my little family. So I wanted to take a moment today to share these happy things. Oh, and also, two really awesome photos. Here's why I'm now the (unofficial) fan club presidents of the Boston Police and Chicago Tribune. These images made my eyes leak with gratitude.

Give the Gift of Dignity. And a Gorgeous Scarf Too.

Genet-thumbnail.jpgOne of the most beautiful things about the online space is how incredibly nimble people can be to make awesome things happen. In October when I traveled to Ethiopia as part of the ONE Moms delegation, our team created such an online stir about fashionABLE that they were able to create three new jobs. This past winter, fellow Ethiopia companion and dear friend Gabrielle Blair, of Design Mom and Alt Summit, worked with ONE and fashionABLE to challenge the Alt community to design an exclusive ONE/fashionABLE Mother's Day scarf. And today the beautiful Genet scarf is available for purchase (with free shipping today and tomorrow).

Simple & Elegant Anytime Cards

pinhole-2013.jpgI love sending and receiving holiday cards. And since becoming a parent, I have fully embraced that it doesn't really matter when you send them -- the point is to reconnect in a way that matters to you whenever you have the chance to do it. (For example, one year we sent our holiday greetings in March...we had many people tell us they loved receiving cards off peak season!) As has become the norm, my holiday cards did not make it out before Christmas (the last batch is going out in the mail today), and it was so delightful to create them and even hand write the addresses. And Pinhole Press made the process absurdly easy.

Weekly Blueprint

aha-new-bedford.jpgHappy Monday everyone -- I hope you had a great weekend! This was an unusually busy weekend for us, which Jon and I kicked off by attending the Room to Grow fundraising gala (this organization does amazing work for babies 0-3 years of age and their families -- if you don't know about them already, check them out!), and then we also celebrated birthdays for family members and baby friends. It's back to work now, though, and for today's Weekly Blueprint I wanted to share event ideas for the week and also some great holiday gift guides (since I never seem to get around to creating one here at Boston Mamas). Have a great week!

Minimalist Holidays: 10 Easy DIY Food Gifts

MinimalistParenting_holidays-badge.pngI love giving and receiving food gifts. They represent something made with love. They negate clutter. They're yummy in the tummy. And they can be ridiculously easy to make, which means you can also involve your kids in the process. As part of Asha and my Minimalist Holidays series (be sure to click over and check out the other great posts!), today I'm sharing 10 easy DIY food gifts. They're perfect for spreading thoughtful holiday cheer while not laying too heavily into your time or wallet.

Minimalist Holidays: 14 Kid Crafted Gifts

MinimalistParenting_holidays-badge.pngI'm a big fan of getting kids crafting; it doesn't need to be over the top and it absolutely shouldn't be stressful -- the point is to simply let your kid's creativity run loose with whatever you've got on hand...while also freeing you up for a stretch of quiet time. The holidays are a great time to inspire kids to create and give and today, as part of Asha and my Minimalist Holidays series, I wanted to share 14 ideas for kid crafted gifts. The ideas span a range of ability and interests and in minimalist parenting fashion, I recommend trying projects that seem doable and fun for both you (as set up person) and your child (as crafter). Meaning, don't stress about trying to be more crafty than you want to be -- simply pick something that feels fun and run with it. Enjoy!

On the Brink

muya-1.jpgOur final site visit in Ethiopia represented the awesome and the ironic. Muya (which means talent) is a woman-owned, fair trade business that has "made it" in many ways. In contrast to the primitive yet productive trappings of fashionABLE, Muya is situated in Addis Ababa on a rather restorative feeling compound -- a series of modern buildings (vs. wood and tin roofed huts) nestled between plenty of foliage. They make a gorgeous array of home and fashion products and produce scarves for Lemlem (which distributes to clients such as J. Crew). Yet despite their successes, they still struggle to gain footing with sellers; largely, it seems, due to outsider stereotypes of Ethiopia.

5 Mighty Accessories

ms-benches.JPGA few weeks ago I arrived home from Mighty Summit with my heart full of admiration for the talented women I connected with on the trip, and my head and notebook full of inspiration resulting from conversation and reflection time. I also returned with lovely accessories -- some of which I've been wearing, well, pretty much constantly. I wanted to share them here because they are awesome and I think you will love them too.

6 Tips for Managing the Family Calendar

family-calendar-1.jpgToday, Jane (also of see jane blog) shares 6 tips for managing the family calendar:

As the mother of a family of six (4 kids, 2 adults), I juggle a lot of schedules. In addition to my husband and my work, personal, and household commitments, we have one teenager committed to 20 hours/week of dance, one tween who adores tennis, track, soccer, and piano, an 8-year-old who plays baseball and dodgeball year-round, and a 5-year-old who loves dance, art, and frequent play dates. Not to mention the coordination around pickups and drop-offs at three different schools! Here are my top tips for managing the family calendar:

Elevate the Everyday

elevate-the-everyday.jpgI have developed a deep appreciation for many things in the six years since I started this blog, and two of those things are photography and daily reflections of gratitude. So when my talented friend Tracey Clark told me she was writing a photography book called Elevate the Everyday, I thought, this sounds divine. And the book is just as delightful and artful as I imagined it would be, given Tracey's general thoughtfulness about life and her experience with publishing (among her publications is the lovely Expressive Photography).

Pinhole (Im)Press(ed)

pinhole-press.jpgI love photography and have approximately a bajillion digital photos sitting on my hard drive, but I definitely struggle with helping these images see the light of day (it wasn't until just before Violet's first birthday that I finally got a photo of her on the wall...doh). So I'm always intrigued to learn about easy ways to turn photos into gifts and art, particularly since Laurel and Violet's grandparents love photo gifts. Today, Lindsey (also of A Design So Vast) shares her experience testing out (for the second time, actually) Pinhole Press. Read on for Lindsey's report, as well as to learn how to win a $100 gift certificate to Pinhole Press!

Giveaway Goodness: Minted

minted-thumb.jpgEvery holiday season since becoming a designer, I feel guilty when the holiday cards start rolling in because I'm too busy with design work to tend to my own cards. One year I embraced this reality and sent out cards in March; otherwise, I don't get around to it. However, this year, thanks to a kind offer from the folks at Minted (where I have had some designs represented), I actually will send out holiday cards this month! Read on to check out my thoughts on Minted's holiday cards, as well as to learn how to win a $150 gift certificate to Minted!

Dear Boston Mamas: Unique Baby Shower Gifts

pregnancy.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from Janelle via Twitter. Janelle asked me for some ideas for unique baby shower gifts. Giveaway Goodness: Gilt Groupe

gilt-children.jpgEver since signing on last year as one of Gilt Groupe's inaugural Gilt-y Moms (a small advisory group), I've been more than a little addicted to their flash sale site, which is replete with stylish finds of all kinds. (Recent awesome women's purchase? A Kate Spade tote. One of their current awesome kids sales? Haba toys. New category I really need to try soon? Gilt Taste. And so on...) And right now Gilt Children is in the middle of a summer spectacular on their Facebook page, through which you can read and share summer tips and ideas. So far conversations have covered traditions and travel tips, and this week's theme is play dates. I've been picking up all sorts of handy nuggets of wisdom over the last couple of weeks!

Say Hello, Gorgeous

hello-gorgeous.JPGSince the sad passing of friend and Boston Mamas contributing writer Sarah Feather last month, I've been mulling how best to honor her spirit. Ultimately, I decided to use my graphic design skills to celebrate Sarah's impeccable style while raising funds for ovarian cancer research -- the result being these chic, cheerful, and eco-friendly Hello, Gorgeous greeting cards. You can read the full story behind the development of the cards here. I hope you'll consider purchasing some cards, both to support ovarian cancer research and stay in touch with loved ones.

Four Pretty & Lovely Things

joslyn1-michelle-armas.jpgI met Joslyn Taylor of Simple Lovely last year in New York City at an event to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, and was thrilled to reconnect with her awesomeness at Altitude Design Summit this year. Joslyn is so elegant and has wonderful (seemingly effortless!) style, so for today's four favorites guest post, I asked Joslyn to share four pretty and lovely things to help moms forget the giant mess that home has turned into (when I asked Joslyn to guest post I envisioned being surrounded by soiled burp cloths, breast pump supplies, and take out containers...).

Capone's Chocolate Covered Figs

capone-figs.jpgToday, Jules shares a fantastic local chocolate find:

Mothers' Day is creeping up and while I'm constantly telling my husband to never, ever bring me chocolate for occasions such as this, this year I do want just one thing -- and it happens to be chocolate. This is the kind of chocolate that I will eat guilt free and will happily share with my kids so they can experience the beauty of quality chocolate made with natural and fresh ingredients -- not the kind that sits on a shelf in a box for weeks (months? years?) before the foil is torn away.

Cute DIY Card Kits

diy-cards-1.JPGThis past weekend my friend Michelle hosted a Valentine's party that allowed the daughters to hang out and the moms to chat. And I loved the low-stress, communal way she structured the gathering. Michelle asked everyone to bring a food contribution and also a small token to put in each of the Valentine's goodie baskets she picked up for the girls. I decided to make cute little card kits and Laurel and I had a great time assembling them. I highly recommend something like this for favors for kids who like to craft. Here's the how-to:

Pretty Grand Calendars

minted-calendar.jpgI love gifting photo calendars. Yes, it takes a bit of effort to collect the photos (and, if you're like me, neurotically arrange them so that the photos are seasonally in line with the months), but they're always a hit, particularly with Laurel's grandparents, who not only love the photos, but also favor paper date keeping. And last month I was thrilled to discover Minted's pretty photo calendars. Read on to learn more about them, as well as how to be one of three winners to receive a $200 gift certificate to Minted!

Fabulous Tips From Nate Berkus

nate-berkus.jpgLast week I had the pleasure of being in on a joint blogger interview with the talented (and adorable) Nate Berkus. I met Nate in NYC this past summer and he is gracious, down to earth, and truly inspiring in his passions. Nate is doing a series of "Nate's Crate" shows (through which he delivers surprises) that I want to check out, and it was fun to glean some of his wisdom last week -- we covered everything from simple holiday solutions to affordable décor ideas to paying it forward. I'm now super inspired as Jon and I march forward on some interior design plans (both because of the baby and because it's simply taken us a long time to get around to settling since moving into our home over two years ago). Here were some of my favorite tips/takeaways from the interview:

Luna & Stella's Lovely Rings

luna-stella-stacking-rings.jpgOne of the best gifts I have ever come up with was back when I was in graduate school. For my mother's 60th birthday I enlisted my six siblings to go in on a big gift: a custom designed mother's ring to replace her wedding ring that had been lost (um, thrown out a moving car window by a toddler) many years before. (I wanted to go with custom because everything I saw ready-made on the market looked tacky, plus we needed something that could be styled awesomely to accommodate seven stones.) I've subsequently always loved the idea of mother's jewelry, but for those of us in our childbearing years, many of the options seem so, well, permanent. Which is one of the reasons I fell in love with Luna & Stella's pretty birthstone stacking rings. Read on to learn more about Luna & Stella, as well as how to win a $50 gift certificate to pick out something pretty of your own!

Sew with Martha

martha-stewart-sewing.jpgThanks to Kate's recommendation, it looks like life list item #6 ("learn to sew a piece of clothing, i.e., something that doesn't only involve right angles") is within my grasp:

I never really got on the Martha Stewart bandwagon so I didn't suffer disappointment about the whole tax-evasion/time-in-prison thing. When I decided to take up sewing last year, however, a favorite blog led me to an announcement about Martha's new compendium on fabric arts, so I decided to give her a try. And wow, was I ever impressed.

Expressive Photography

expressive-photography.jpgOn Thursday's episode of Life.Style I interviewed Tracey Clark, founder of Shutter Sisters and editor of the amazing book Expressive Photography: The Shutter Sisters' Guide to Shooting from the Heart. The publishers of Expressive Photography sent me a copy of the book to peruse in advance of the show and I cannot recommend it enough, whether as a gift to yourself or a loved one. Whether you're a novice, amateur, or professional photographer, Expressive Photography is replete with inspiring imagery and practical tips and tricks on approach, perspective, composition, lighting, details, and processing for different types of photos (e.g., landscape, portraits, still life, etc.). When I created my life list last month, #5 was "Remember to take photos of my family on the first day of each month." This book is providing immense inspiration to move forward with this project.

Giveaway Goodness: Conundrum Gift Basket

conundrum-wine.jpgI can't think of a single person who couldn't stand to enjoy some unwind time. And if you're unable to enjoy relaxation out-of-home (e.g., the couple's massage I surprised Jon with last weekend...ahhh), kicking back in the comfort of your home can be the next best thing. In my pregnant state, wine is not an option, but you're welcome to enjoy this basket of goodies that Conundrum Winery is kindly offering as part of my Giveaway Goodness series. One lucky winner will receive a gift basket (click on image to enlarge) that includes a bottle of Conundrum wine, fuzzy socks, a relaxing jazz CD, votive candle, and a collection of yummy natural beauty products (I could use a peppermint salt soak right about now, couldn't you?). Pretty Little Tea Tumblers

dasik-tumblers.jpgI've been meaning to post for a while now about some utterly lovely pottery we've been enjoying. During a hunt for unique Korean style pottery, I discovered Grace Lee's Vancouver-based studio eikcam via Etsy. Lee creates beautiful pottery, jewelry, and photography, and her ceramics are lovingly handcrafted and styled with a vintage and earthy aesthetic using antique molds and distinctive glazes. And from a customer service perspective, Lee is wonderful; she was patient and cheerful while I waffled absurdly about color options before settling on this pretty little pair of turquoise dasik tea tumblers. I adore the (by American standards) petite size and styling of these tumblers (about 8 ounces); they're dishwasher and microwave safe (though I prefer to hand wash them) and I'm pretty sure that at some point I ought to get the matching tea pot.

The Cutest Panda Mugs

panda-mugs-1.JPGThough in general I advocate for less of the unnecessary, every now and then something material catches my eye and refuses to budge from my periphery. Such was the case last weekend when Laurel and I were in Porter Square, picking up some Japanese pastries and browsing Tokai. I circled away from these ridiculously cute Japanese panda mugs (note the adorable tail blob on the back of the mug) about five times, trying to convince myself out of buying them. Which of course meant I needed to buy them.

Birthday Giveaway: Teleflora

teleflora.jpgA few birthdays ago, Jon gave me the incredibly thoughtful and generous gift of flower "credits" at a local florist; over the course of three or so months, I walked around the corner and picked up fresh flowers whenever I wanted them. It made me so happy to have cheerful blooms in the house, and I feel that same happiness to this day, whether we pick up flowers at the market or receive a delivery to our door (which reminds me that I need to order a thank you bouquet for my in-laws, who took care of Laurel while I was at BlogHer). Similarly, I don't think I've ever met someone who doesn't enjoy receiving flowers, and whether you'd like to treat yourself to some flowers, or surprise a loved one with a delivery, it's pretty cool that as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Telefora generously is gifting one lucky winner with their choice of bouquet up to $75 in value. Birthday Giveaway: Equal Exchange

equal-exchange.jpgI have been a fan of Equal Exchange for some time: I've purchased their fair trade products at the market. I invariably visit the Equal Exchange Café when I'm in the vicinity of North Station. I love that they are headquartered locally. I'm a wee bit obsessed with their dark chocolate minis. I think it's super cool that they offer an alternative to cheese log and wrapping paper school fundraisers with a fair trade fundraising program that makes money for schools and community groups via yummy and cool fair trade gifts while benefiting organic farmers and artisans around the world. And as if that isn't enough, as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Equal Exchange generously is gifting one lucky winner with the delightful gift of coffee and chocolate (one 5 lb bag of whole bean coffee + 1 box of 150 mini chocolates; $82 value). Kindly gifted by Charlestown-based brick and mortar (and online) indie boutique Olivia Browning as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, this bag is punchy in color, lined with a washable interior and handy pockets, and features gold hardware to up the fancy factor; you'll no doubt feel happy carrying this bag, whether or not the bottom is lined with a few Cheerios. Laurel loved the face painting, games, snacks, and garden displays, and I was especially thrilled to see many green companies I have featured (Boston Organics, Bum Boosa, Diaper Lab, Go GaGa, Sakura Bloom, Seventh Generation, snackTAXI, Stonyfield) present, and also to discover new ones, such as Acero Studio. Craftastic CRAFTBOSTON

ananda-khalsa.jpgThere's so much creative, organic mojo going on this weekend in Boston. In addition to the Down:2:Earth sustainable living expo, consider CRAFTBOSTON, which runs today through Sunday at the World Trade Center. CRAFTBOSTON will feature 200 talented artists featuring lovingly handcrafted wares. Among those showing, I am utterly intrigued by Northampton artist Ananda Khalsa's tiny paintings set in metal jewelry (shown). Though definitely not for the faint of budget, Khalsa's little treasures look of heirloom quality. And there are also plenty of beautiful creations to be had at CRAFTBOSTON for under $100.

wheatgrass.jpgHere's a roundup of inspiration as you plan for Easter and Passover. At Make & Takes, I love the tips for growing wheatgrass and adorable Easter coloring pages. I'm not a ham person, but if you are, A Southern Fairytale can hook you up with some mouth watering ham recipes. How cute is this DIY bird's nest from Alpha Mom, or the Easter clothing picks from Design Mom? And for your Easter baskets: $15 or less ideas from Cool Mom Picks, basket picks for grownups from Mighty Goods, and gorgeous bunny and egg gift picks from Lil Sugar.

Start Sprouting

wildflowers.jpgThis past weekend when Laurel and I hit the hardware store to pick up some final flood cleanup supplies, she immediately headed for the seed racks. Though we lack the garden space of our previous residence to grow veggies (tragic, but we're instead eagerly awaiting the start of our CSA), I couldn't resist the opportunity to engage in a fun nature project with her. Here are some simple tips to start sprouting with your kids, even if you're lacking a garden plot:

Seeing the Everyday

seeing-the-everday.jpgDespite leading an uber digital life, I remain loyal to the tactile joys of books and print magazines. And given my passion for simplicity and minimalist living, I adore locally produced Seeing the Everyday. Including beautiful photography and thoughtful, well written reflections about the small yet meaningful moments in life, the personal stories and academic articles of this ad-free magazine make clear how deeply our actions as parents impact our children. Some of the stories have made me laugh and some have moved me to tears. And throughout, it's truly amazing that once I start flipping through this periodical’s pages, I can’t help but slow down, breathe, reflect, and feel grateful.

Now, want to be one of two winners to receive a subscription to Seeing the Everyday? Here’s how:

Simplifying Gift Wrapping

solid-wrapping-paper.jpgToday, Heather shares a fabulous idea that simplifies gift wrapping and makes the holidays accessible for pre-readers:

“I love Christmas and all that comes with it: the music, decorating, baking, shopping, and -- my favorite part -- watching the excitement and anticipation of my four children. The one thing I do not love is gift wrapping, possibly because I come from a family where gift wrapping is considered an art form. The busier my life gets, the more stressful I find this task. Though I love the look of artfully wrapped gifts, my practical side always wonders if it is worth spending so much time on gift wrap that will be ripped off in a few seconds.

Simplifying The Holidays: Last Minute Holiday Shopping Tips

deshawn-marie-soaps.jpgMy respect, admiration, and affection for Liz Gumbinner and Kristen Chase of Cool Mom Picks is multidimensional. I met them for the first time in real life at BlogHer Chicago in July, but I have “e-known” them since the early CMP days, followed their hilarious personal blogs (Mom-101 and Motherhood Uncensored, respectively), and interfaced with Kristen through Parent Bloggers Network and also via Kristen motivating me to become one of the original wave of Shredheads. Liz and Kristen are such talented, generous, and funny women, and for the thirteenth installment of my Simplifying the Holidays guest blog series, I’m thrilled to share their savvy shopping tips to help you survive the last minute holiday shopping crunch.

In my guest post, I share the how-to for creating the fabulous photo bookmarks that I first fashioned for my family a few Christmases ago and now create for clients. How can you not love a gift that's pretty and inspires reading? Only problem? Now my family knows what my holiday token is this year.

Simplifying The Holidays: Easy Holiday Crafts

make-and-takes-fruity-garland.jpgMarie LeBaron is a blog friend who I have yet to meet in real life, but we share a passion for crafting and food and I so admire all of the crafty awesomeness she shares on her site, Make and Takes. And though Marie and my friendship is relatively new, her enthusiasm encouraged me to sign up with her and ten other bloggers for what no doubt will be a (somewhat insane) major bonding experience: a 200-mile relay run come spring (gulp). I’m thrilled that today, for the seventh installment of my Simplifying the Holidays guest blog series, Marie shares easy yet engaging holiday crafts to enjoy with your kids.

Simplifying The Holidays: Mindful Gifts

BBQ-spice-rub.JPGI first connected with Michelle Stern of What's Cooking two years ago, when she approached me about contributing to Boston Mamas. Though Michelle is based on the West Coast, I adore her hands on approach to cooking with kids and we walk the same green path; the geographical disparity quickly became an afterthought. It was such a pleasure to finally meet Michelle this summer, when we happened to film our segments for The Juice back to back. Just as lovely in person as she is over e-mail, though Michelle is a regular contributor to this site, given that she is one of my favorite eco-foodies, I wanted to feature her in my Simplifying the Holidays guest blog series. Today, Michelle shares a few simple yet meaningful ideas for mindful holidays gifts.

Simplifying the Holidays: Rocks in a Jar

holiday-gift.JPGI adore Melissa Massello, not only because she’s super creative and fun (plus, we share bonds over figure skating, fashion, shredding, and all things writerly), but because I’ve seen her jump from traditional employment to fulfilling her dream of launching the online magazine Shoestring Magazine, which focuses on tips for achieving the good life for less. As the first in my Simplifying the Holidays guest blog series, today Melissa shares a strategy for prioritizing and planning holiday gifting that can result in major bargains, meaningful finds, and less stress.

Food Gifts & Floral Tricks

chocolate-chip-cookie-gift.jpgLast week I attended a media event hosted by Stop & Shop and similar to last year, where I came away with lovely ideas for easy and green holiday décor, I left with some good ideas related to holiday gifting and decor. Specifically, I was reminded of the beauty and ease of prettily packaged food gifts and was introduced to a couple of floral tricks that no doubt will come in handy when I host Thanksgiving later this month.

Pretty Little Plush Puffs

plush-puffs.gifDespite my clean approach to food, I still periodically long for – but abstain from – classic (i.e., preservative laden) childhood confections. So I was more than a little intrigued to learn about Plush Puffs gourmet marshmallows. And more than a little happy that these pretty little puffs deliver. They’re all natural (you can, in fact, pronounce the entire ingredient list) and they hit the spot, whether squished inside a s’more, used as a surprising sundae topping (Laurel went berserk over this), or dropped into a steaming mug of hot cocoa (my favorite). To the latter effect, I'm thinking Plush Puffs paired with quality hot chocolate will make for excellent holiday hostess gifts this season.

Now, want to win goodies from Plush Puffs? Here's how:

Little Locket

silver-locket.jpgWe’re still not out of the woods with Laurel’s transition to kindergarten, and I recently added something to our repertoire that brings her great comfort. Though ideally I’d prefer more modern styling, I was looking quickly for something affordable; I ordered this silver locket necklace from Overstock.com and Laurel loves it. I had her choose the photos to include (she opted for our family + her eating an ice cream sundae this summer) then resized, printed, cut, and popped in the photos, facing them right side up from Laurel’s vantage point (secure the pictures with a tape roll to keep the photos from sliding around). The locket is easy for Laurel to open (frequently) and the length perfect for her to keep us close to her heart.

Treasure Hunting, Part I

tjmaxx.jpgThere’s something to be said for paying for an experience; say, first class airline tickets, a meal at a chic restaurant that will stow luggage while you shop (as did Stephanie’s on Newbury, where I took a visiting friend yesterday), or spa services that create a truly calming environment (compared to the bargain nail salon where I bang away on my Blackberry so I can work while getting a pedicure). But when it comes to clothing and accessories, generally speaking, I’m all about getting the best bargain. And that’s why I was intrigued to learn about treasure hunting at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and AJWright last week. I’ll address T.J. Maxx and Marshalls here and AJWright in a follow up post, given that these were separate events.

Ultra Subtle City Notebook

moleskin-san-francisco.jpgProbably due at least in part to feeling conspicuous as one of a few minority families in our town growing up, I have a residual thing about blending in when I travel. Will You Be My Pen Pal?

pen-quill.jpgAlthough Laurel’s daycare runs year round, the summer tends to be a time for transition, and the recent departure of one of her friends reminded me of something I loved doing as a child: exchanging letters with pen pals. Laurel’s friend (or actually, her parents) left a colorful paper bag in each friend’s mail pouch with a sweet goodbye letter that included the friend's mailing address and a request to be pen pals. Also handily included: a note card and self-addressed stamped envelope to get the ball rolling.

Food Explorer Passport

foodpassport1.jpgToday, April offers a cool idea to inspire kids to try new foods:

My daughter has interesting tastes in food. She is my child in so many ways, but in the food adventure sort of way, not so much. I was dying to try everything as a child...just because. I wanted to try it all, and I often did. My daughter? Well, she has her favorites and she'd like to stick to them, thankyouverymuch. Luckily for us, her favorite foods are black beans, broccoli, and pasta. Not a bad triad of vitamins, protein and fiber. But try to get an apple in the girl? A grape? A suspect vegetable? It all produces a gag reflex that upsets the stomach of everyone around. Even the promise of a treat for sampling everything on her plate cannot tempt her. She'll decide to go without.

Among their bag collection, the totes (I especially love the Nicky tote; shown) are particularly great for little girls on the go. They’re sized well enough for your child to carry a few favorite items, but not so big that they end up bringing the kitchen sink (which Laurel invariably will do if given the room). Bookplates for Bookworms

felixdoolittle.jpgLaurel has long been a bookworm, and her well-loved (read: grubby) baby and toddler books thus are far from keepsake quality. It’s only now, as she’s grown into a pre-K’er who takes pride in – and care of - her belongings, that I’ve looked at some of her books and toys in a preservative light. And I subsequently adore Newton-based Felix Doolittle’s gorgeous bookplates. These elegant yet playful watercolor motif plates (shown motif; Favorite Things) can be ordered blank or personalized and are a lovely way to commemorate your child’s favorite books, or – as a friend pointed out to me - offer a simple way for an older child to mark ownership of a few items when a sibling comes along.

Plus, the ability to personalize the pad with your child’s name and photo not only is cute, but there’ll be no doubting who was responsible for brightening grandma and grandpa’s day with personal mail.

Fuss Free Framing

imagekind.jpgI typically am all about do-it-yourself crafts, but to artfully frame photos, I’ve experienced considerable frustration in the process of printing images, then finding frames that are the right style, have appropriately sized windows for your printed photos (sometimes resizing and reprinting photos is necessary), and aren’t dinged up from excessive handling at the store. Luckily, I now have a great solution. Read on for a review of the online framing service Imagekind, and also to learn how to win a $100 Imagekind gift card.

Give the Gift of Diapers

diapercakewalk.gif

You can’t go wrong gifting new parents with diapers. Reader Sharon from Henderson, NV wrote in with this tip on gifting diapers with style: “I just got [a Diaper Cakewalk diaper cake] for my friend's baby shower and it was just too cute! Everyone at the baby shower raved about what a cute idea it was, and most had never seen one before. I got the pink and brown one with the Burt’s Bees products. It smelled great, and my pregnant friend loved it; she got everyone's picture taken with the cake. This is my new go-to baby gift for pregnant friends and family!”

Making Me Time

lobotome.gif

I’ve always been a big list maker; there used to be satisfaction simply in jotting down the to-dos and seeing them checked off, but now lists are a necessity. I need to write ideas and to-dos down or they leave the building, as it were. And for fellow paper-oriented list makers and schedulers who need a little help getting their thoughts organized, there’s lobotoME.

Tiny Tales

As the sixth-born in my family, there’s little written or photographic evidence of my baby/toddlerhood, and as such, I used to love poring over the baby books my mom kept for my older siblings. Make an Impression

bellyvita.gif

During my last trimester with Laurel, I often couldn't believe that my belly had ever been flat. And I have moments now when I see pregnant women and am amazed that I ever carried that giant, fantastic belly. It makes me wish that I had captured tangible, tactile evidence of my pregnant self.

If we go the baby road again, I plan on molding my form with the Belly Imprint Spa Treatment & Sculpting Kit by Belly Vita. A beautifully packaged go-to gift for expecting moms, this kit offers a multimodal means to indulge the senses, calm the mind, create an extraordinary keepsake, and connect with your partner before the chaos begins. The process takes about 30 minutes and involves massaging soothing oil onto the belly, prepping then wrapping the sculpting fabric on the belly and chest, and relaxing while the sculpting fabric sets. (Note: This is the perfect time to solicit a hand and foot rub.) Once dry, your belly mold can continue to evolve into a work of art with simple paint, pretty paper decoupage accents, and/or ribbon or other embellishments.

Summerhouse Baking

summerhouse.gifI'm an avid baker, but that by no means stands in the way of Jon and my devoted quest to find excellent baked treats (and coffee…) out in the world. Our latest find – Summerhouse Baking – is a must try for cookie lovers.

Made from scratch using quality ingredients (including products from local, family-owned farms and mills), pastry chef Lauren Ferrone’s cookie collection is classic with a decadent twist. Despite our chocoholic tendencies and Ferrone’s chocolate-based stunners, our favorite is the Oatmeal Coconut Cranberry, a buttery, vibrant cookie loaded with enough toasted oat goodness to nearly justify that it might do for breakfast.

Backyard Birding

audubon.jpg

I consider myself a bona fide nature loving urban girl, but ever since referring to a seagull as a “beach pigeon” one vacation, I don’t exactly get props for my ornithological taxonomic prowess.

There may be hope yet. Through my in-laws’ and our neighbors’ new spring feeders, Laurel and I have discovered a lof of fun in backyard birding. Not surprisingly, our resident preschool sponge already has matched my bird ID abilities, and she’s now looking for answers that I don't have. I couldn’t find a quick, visual online catalog of common backyard birds, but the Audubon Songbirds and Other Backyard Birds calendar looks like it will do the trick. Even though we’re already a third of the way into the year, this visual aid looks worth it based on the rave user reviews; you also can preorder the 2008 calendar.

For budding birding enthusiasts, check out the Audubon at home guide for tips on how to create your own little backyard bird sanctuary.

Back It Up

mixitcd.gif

Back in graduate school I had a research assistant who tried to help back up my data while I was away at a conference and ended up deleting one of my dissertation experiments entirely (also known as “data lost due to technical difficulties” in the academic literature).

I’ve been a multiple copy backup hound ever since, and whether you share those habits, or need inspiration to take care of this tedious but critical task, check out the chic, patterned Mixit CD Stickers from See Jane Work ($7.50 for 8). These lovely labels no doubt will inspire your own data protection system, or make for a cool finish for music, photo, or video CD gifts for family and friends.

Diverse Faces

scrappynotes.gif

It may sound trivial, but I love when my universes collide, such that an inquiry from a friend, family member, or reader is well timed with my learning about an interesting new product or tip.

A reader recently asked whether I knew of a source to get family oriented address labels right around the time I learned about Scrappy Notes. Scrappy Notes offers an extensive collection of playfully illustrated paper goods, including a large selection of custom address labels. We especially appreciate the multicultural awareness of the Stick Face Family design (1 x 2 5/8”; 150 for $22.95); in addition to choosing from a variety of fonts and font colors, you can select up to six faces from over 300 options representing a diverse array of skin and hair colors.

Couture Keepsakes

keepsakeconcepts.gif

A recent conversation with a girlfriend who is planning a wedding shower reminded me of what a challenge favors can be in party planning; it’s tough to find meaningful, pretty, or useful favors that don't break the bank.

Coincidentally, we just learned about a nifty twist in the favor market that comes from Keepsake Concepts. Keepsake Concepts' Couture Keepsakes line takes traditional candy favors to a new level by encasing them in sweet, little outfits that will last long after the Jordan almonds are gone. These impressively appointed favors, which come on wooden hangers in styles for wedding, boys, and girls (shown, Emily, $5.50) measure 4.5"L x 3.5W" and include a miniature wooden clothespin that holds your custom message tag. These keepsakes can serve as party favors or baby announcements, and would preserve beautifully in a shadow box, or make for easy décor hung on a nail or a cute little clothesline.

One Stop Style

blablamobile.gif

I certainly appreciate, and have benefited from, the practicality of baby shower registries, but sometimes you stumble on a seriously fabulous shower gift that warrants diverting from more mundane necessities.

Case in point: Pink Olive Boutique's stock of beautiful, vivid blabla knits. Especially impressive is the Small Jungle Mobile (shown; $78), a hand knitted work of art measuring 8” in diameter. We also love the cheerful ladybug booties and hat ($28 each).

Pink Olive just launched in November but this web boutique carries a cool collection of chic baby items, gifts, and stylish warm weather getaway gear. And Pink Olive is offering Boston Mamas readers a little New Year's gift; type “Boston Mamas” in the comments box before checking out to receive free ground shipping on orders over $50. (Shipping fee will be removed manually on order processing.)

Gifts for Grandmas

handprinttower.jpg

I know a lot of hip and stylish grandmas out there, but they get little focused due in the retail market (try Googling the topic and among your first hits will be medication pill boxes). An inquiry from a friend/reader from Los Angeles - whose mom is about to become a new grandma - inspired me to collect some gift ideas that have proven to be winners with grandparents.

Artwork, including anything from sticker collages to scribbles to paint, is at the top of my list; an inexpensive frame adds a professional finish. If you have an infant, however, other picks include photo gifts such as albums, calendars, or photo coasters (ordered easily through services such as Kodak EasyShare Gallery or Snapfish); Laurel's non-local grandparents also love the video clip CDs we burned for them.

Handprint molds are another great option. Check out the nifty handprint towers in blue (shown) and pink from Target. Each set includes 5 graduated tins and easy to use nontoxic plaster to create handprints for every year from ages 1 to 5.

Finally, here are a couple of great gifts that can be presented before the baby is born (or with minimal effort from exhausted parents). L’Occitane carries beautiful gift sets, such as the Best Gift Box (includes Aromachologie hair care products, Verbena scented body care products, and Shea Butter soaps) or the Ultimate Shea Butter Gift Box (includes Shea Butter body cream, hand cream, and soap). And you can never go wrong with flowers; Martha Stewart Flowers offers beautiful single arrangements and monthly flower deliveries (choose from 3, 6, or 12 month plans).

Pen to Paper

logo_loveandforgive.gif

Thanksgiving offered a scheduled means for us to count our blessings; an ongoing project by The Fetzer Institute provides inspiration to continue to reflect on, and connect with, loved ones.

The Fetzer Institute’s Campaign for Love & Forgiveness is an inclusive, nonpartisan initiative that invites people to think about and connect on the topics of love and forgiveness, with the goal of effecting meaningful change in individuals and communities. Initiated in response to tumultuous events abroad and at home, the campaign has included events around the country, and seeks to revive the lost art of letter writing as a means to express kindness, and deepen or renew relationships.

A simple note will do; but for added inspiration and aesthetic, check out the beautiful love and forgiveness stationery kits that Paper Source has produced in partnership with the campaign. The linen folio includes a variety of cards, writing papers, envelopes, expressions, letter writing tips, and a coordinating pen.

Make a Happy Hostess

pacifica.gif

Isn’t it ironic that holiday hosting can be a source of honor, joy, exhaustion, and irritation practically all at the same time?

Show your appreciation to the holiday hosts who no doubt are losing sleep this week over redecoration, cleaning, and food preparation. Candles or soaps from the delicious Pacifica line are an elegant and environmentally friendly choice. Pacifica’s pillar and soy wax candles are clean burning and made by hand using paraffin or vegetable-based soy in small batches; soaps are handmade using biodegradable, vegan, vegetable glycerin soap base. Both products are infused with essential oils and other fragrance enhancers, and the results are good enough to eat; we especially love the unusual, rich Mexican Cocoa soap (shown, $6.95). Products are offered individually, or in prepackaged gift sets.

Available at Whole Foods and many other gift stores and bookstores. Click here to search Pacifica's (impressively accurate and comprehensive looking) vendor lists for the US and Canada.

A-List Announcement

5starbaby.gif

There typically is a village ready to welcome a baby into the world, and now you can acknowledge all the players with the clever, playful movie poster baby announcements from 5starbaby. Created by graphic designer and father of three Peter Malamas, these A-list announcements are unique in offering the ability to detail what a collectively happy occasion the birth of a baby truly is. In addition to the typical baby specs, you can include the names of your loved ones, pets, and particularly fabulous birthing staff in the “cast list,” as well as personalized “baby reviews” from the soft-hearted critics corner.

These announcements typically are printed on premium glossy photo paper at 5 x 8 inches (click here for information on alternative sizes), and cost between $2.75 - $3.50 per announcement, depending on quantity. Mention that you heard about 5starbaby from Boston Mamas to receive 20% off your order!

Posh Peacock

pp_125tile.gif

Time for a bit of shameless (yet relevant!) self-promotion. As described previously, I love design work; my gradual evolution from academic to artist has involved a number of projects over the last few years where I have developed announcements, invitations, and gifts to celebrate life’s milestones and transitions.

If you love paper, fabric, and other crafty goodness, I would love for you to check out Posh Peacock, which features the types of design projects that help infuse style, color, and happiness into my every day life. More samples, as well as pricing details, will be added to the site soon; meanwhile I'm happy to chat with clients about estimates for potential projects (initial consultation is complimentary).

Parenting Naturally

logo_nfb.jpg

While I love trundling around little boutiques on foot, sometimes one stop shopping is the way to go. Boston area mama Jeniphir Taylor-McIntire, a sales consultant for Natural Family Boutique, recently pointed me to her online store.

The site offers Haba toys (my favorite toy line, period!) and apparel for babes, indulgent jewelry, spa, and home items for mamas, and lots of products for new parents (breastfeeding, baby care, and cloth diapering supplies, pregnancy, birth and postpartum products, books & CDs, slings). The site also offers resource material on breastfeeding, pregnancy and birth, nutrition, parenting, natural living, and activism.
