Giveaway Goodness: Flip Camcorder

shamrock-flip-camcorders.jpgWell, friends, my due date is St. Patrick's Day, but clearly, I'm not going to be the only lucky one. I adore the Flip camcorder; I carry mine everywhere and it has proven fantastic for capturing video for family (far away relatives need not worry about missing out on Laurel's school plays and concerts), work (the tech guys at Life.Style have been super impressed with the quality of my on the fly interview footage), and fun (thanks to the easy interface I set up a YouTube channel...I'm a little shocked by how many people have viewed my Straight No Chaser clips). So how cool is it that as part of my Giveaway Goodness series, the kind folks at Flip want to gift one of you fabulous readers with either their shamrock or retro clover UltraHD 8GB (2 hour) Flip camera? Totally awesome! Check out the rules below to enter to win:

Bread Machine Magic

zojirushi-mini-breadmaker.jpgToday, Kate shares a compact, frequently used favorite solution for achieving fresh baked bread at home:

Years ago, my mother bought me my first bread machine. We were shopping together and it was an impulse purchase; one that I treasured simply because my mother -- who was suffering from serious health problems at the time -- had given it to me. After a period of using it, however, I made the dispiriting discovery that bread coming out of the machine all tasted kind of the same, all appeared in an unnatural cube shape, and all featured a peculiar hole at the bottom left over from the kneading blade. And so, I left the bread machine behind while packing for one move or another, thus ending my career as a bread machine user.

Slick Mini

hp-mini-110-studio-tord-boontje.jpgI don’t typically post about contests on other sites, but I wanted to share this Simplify My Life campaign from Mom Bloggers Club because: a) it’s pretty sweet; b) anyone tuned in here over the holidays knows I'm all about simplifying; and c) I evaluated the product being given away so I know first hand how fantastic it is. In a nutshell, MBC & HP are giving away the super slick HP Studio Tord Boontje Mini 110 netbook. Actually, six of them. Simply blog about how the Mini 110 could simplify your life; the three most creative blog entries will win a Mini 110, plus three randomly drawn readers who comment in on these Simplify My Life posts will receive a Mini 110 (so, if you don't blog, read and comment in!). Be sure to check out the entry rules, and for details on usability and performance, read my evaluation.

Awesome & Easy Apple Crisp

apples.jpgIt’s been so long since I posted about baking with apples that I couldn’t remember whether I already posted my mom’s awesome and easy apple crisp recipe. Turns out I did (three years ago, back when Boston Mamas was just a baby!), and today I wanted to share this recipe again from the archives because it is so ridiculously good (plus, the back story is super sweet). Making this apple crisp yesterday with Laurel served as a perfect rainy day activity as well as a way to use up the apples she picked on a recent school field trip. An apple peeler makes quick work of the apples, and I recommend engaging your kids to mix the crisp topping. Also recommended: topping the apple crisp with vanilla ice cream.

A King in a Catalog

king-arthur-flour.jpgToday, Kate recommends a reliable (and resplendent) source as you gear up for fall baking:

“I used to love receiving catalogs, each so colorful and shiny and full of promise. And then the deluge began – so many catalogs, often multiple copies of the same one, and many for products that I would never dream of buying – and the fun turned into annoyance that my mailbox was stuffed and the forests being cut down.

My New Friend The Flip

flip.bmpI’m well aware that my passion for preserving and sharing memories – via photos, videos, and on paper – is related to the fact that I have very little documentation of my own childhood (other than school photos, I have about a dozen baby pictures, all shot on the same day). And as someone who relies on technology (both for work and said memory preservation) yet desires simple spaces and clean lines, I’ve long felt defeated by the battle of cords and cables. So it’s no wonder that I am totally in love with the ridiculously easy to use, blissfully cord-free Flip camcorder.

Accolades for the Humble

dustbuster.jpgToday, Kate recommends a humble yet essential household gadget:

“Our world is filled with the seductive calls of shiny, splashy, colorful things, all vying for our attention, time, and money. I like to shop because I enjoy pretty, clever, and well-packaged products; however, I have a number of items that are simple, un-fancy, and humble, and that make me inordinately happy because they do what they are designed to do so well, so effortlessly, and with so little razzmatazz, and by doing so genuinely improve the quality of life in my household. One such product is the Black and Decker DustBuster.

A Multifunction for Multitaskers

epson.jpgAs someone who strives for streamlined living and working, I’ve always loved the concept of multifunction machines, but until recently, I had yet to find one (on a reasonable budget) that really and truly did what it was supposed to do. That is, until I tried the Epson Artisan 800 All-in-One, which I’m reviewing today thanks to One2One Network and my blog peep Jennifer James of the Mom Bloggers Club.

Wake Up Meow

catalarmclock.jpgDespite the fact that Laurel wakes up in time to her internal clock, she’s recently become interested in learning to tell time and asked for an alarm clock bedside. I wasn’t about to deter her interest in routine, and thus was thrilled to learn about the Chocolate Cake Club’s ultra cute talking alarm clocks for kids. Laurel loves the cat clock, which meows as its wake up call. And while we wish the alarm volume was adjustable for our (admittedly sensitive) ears (taping a little square of cardboard across the back speaker did the trick though), otherwise this clock wins our raves. The bright and cheery retro styling gives props to the predigital days, and the irresistibly cute face has boosted Laurel’s curiosity about learning to read the clock hands. We love that she now definitely knows when bed time is.

Classic Cherry Pie

cherrypie.jpgI’m not sure whether it’s coincidence or consequence that June-born Jon loves cherries, but every year he’d rather have cherry pie than cake. The year Laurel was born, in my sleep deprived, frantically trying-to-bake-while-on-a-conference-call state, I dropped my fully assembled pie as I tried to put it in the oven. I thus was too traumatized last year to try again, but when Bon Appétit’s June 2008 issue featured this Classic Sour Cherry Pie With Lattice Crust recipe, I knew it was time to give cherry pie another go. Plus, Laurel was sure to keep reminding me to use both hands when putting the pie in the oven.

Grand Griddle

doublegriddle.gif

Inquiring minds want to know about the double burner griddle that’s perfectly sized to cook an entire batch of chicken tenders (posted earlier this week).

Ours was purchased at Williams-Sonoma with generous gift credit; you can get a comparable model for less via the Kitchen Essentials from Calphalon Griddle ($59.99 at Target). Along with our panini press, the double griddle is one of the workhorses of our kitchen. The only time it has moved farther than the stovetop to kitchen sink was when we moved house.

Heating Solution

delonghi.gif

Baby, it’s cold outside!

If you also are parent to a kid who refuses to keep blankets on (and you don’t live in a home with zoned, adjustable heating), you can find comfort in the DeLonghi TRH0715 Oil Filled Radiator Heatericon. This heater offers 3 variable heat settings, an adjustable thermostat, and no exposed elements. It’s streamlined yet solid; we favored this traditional heavier heater over lightweight models that seemed prone to tipping or being dragged around by a toddler.

We picked up our first DeLonghi in the fall at Sears and were so thrilled with it that we went back a week later to get one for my mom (by which point they had jacked the price up $15). Who knows what they’re charging now that we’re well into winter but on SHOP.COM you can get this model starting at $47.99 (pre-shipping). If you spend over $50 be sure to take advantage of their site wide coupons (use “SHOP5” for $5 off an order of $50+, “SHOP10” for $10 off an order of $100+, and “SHOP25” for $25 off an order of $250 or more).

Perfect Panini

panini.jpg

Every now and then, a home good comes along and changes the way our household operates.

Since receiving a panini press as a gift a couple months ago, we have enjoyed pressed sandwiches every day (or sometimes several times in a day…quesadillas also work well). And since grilled cheese sandwiches are a top request from Laurel, we’ve been especially thrilled with the ease and amazing non-burn factor of this tool, which now holds a central spot on our kitchen counter.

We received a Napa Style press, but Cuisinart and Hamilton Beach offer similar styles at a lower price with favorable user reviews.

Healthful Humidifier

humidifier.gif

Obsessive research runs in my family. While my “specialties” include domestics, art supplies, fashion, and kid stuff, my two brothers are official gadget hounds. When we needed a humidifier last winter for Laurel, not surprisingly, my brother (who thrives on medically-tested products) had a recommendation right at his fingertips. The Slant Fin Warm Mist Humidifier is decidedly more functional than fashionable (in comparison to cute animal-inspired models on the market), but it is highly effective and will satisfy even them most extreme germophobe.

This dual-tank humidifier uses ultraviolet light to sterilize water (99.999% bacteria free production), and the water is vaporized to eliminate white dust, making it safer for allergy and asthma sufferers. Dimensions are 15 5/8"L x 11 3/8"W x 12"H and suit rooms up to 20 x 20 feet (400 sq. ft.). Tanks are one gallon each (nice, so you don’t have to fill them up as often), and I’m pretty sure the humidifier included starter mineral absorption pads and the UV light bulb (bulbs run at maximum output for about 2000 hours and mineral pad life depends on water content); we never needed to replace either of these items throughout last winter.

Giant Apple Spirals

applecorer.gif

In my new life as an independent contractor, I’m constantly watching the clock. I was practically out of my mind last week juggling various projects, and may not have made it to the other side of Thanksgiving without the tool that ultimately saved me countless hours in the kitchen.

The issue was this: my deliciously absurd mile high apple pie required 5½ pounds of apples. Last year when I made this pie, Jon and I toiled bitterly in the kitchen, slowly peeling, coring, and slicing while the apples turned a nasty shade of brown. This year, without the flexibility (read: lower time priority) offered by my lackluster salaried job, I decided to try an apple peeler.

The “apple machine” (as Laurel calls it) was the best kitchen purchase I have made in a long time. The tool is easy to use, and the giant pile of apples was prepped in 15 minutes. Laurel loved watching me make “giant apple spirals,” and now the apple machine gets prime kitchen shelf real estate due to frequency of use at snack time.

Cookie Monster

ws_dinosaur.jpg

Rolling out cookie dough can be a bit of a high maintenance baking project, but isn't it worth it to bring dinosaurs back to life? With these super cute Dinosaur Cookie Cutters from Williams Sonoma at hand, you likely won’t have any trouble engaging your kids to help you roll, cut, and decorate these prehistoric pals.

The set of ten tin-plated steel cookie cutters ($19.50) are about 6 inches wide and include: brontosaurus, raptor, pterodactyl, triceratops, wooly mammoth, saber-toothed tiger, parasaurolophus, torosaur, tyrannosaurus, and stegosaurus.

The cookies will be extinct in no time, but the cutters are built to last.
