Popsicle Fever!

popsicles.gif

Little Lettice’s Sara Cabot and I are well aligned in our food philosophies, and our families similarly share a passion for popsicles. Today, Sara shares information on sugar content in commercial popsicles as well as tips for homemade popsicles. I add comments at the end of her feature regarding popsicle molds and homemade chocolate pops:

Grand Griddle

doublegriddle.gif

Inquiring minds want to know about the double burner griddle that’s perfectly sized to cook an entire batch of chicken tenders (posted earlier this week).

Ours was purchased at Williams-Sonoma with generous gift credit; you can get a comparable model for less via the Kitchen Essentials from Calphalon Griddle ($59.99 at Target). Along with our panini press, the double griddle is one of the workhorses of our kitchen. The only time it has moved farther than the stovetop to kitchen sink was when we moved house.

Heating Solution

Baby, it’s cold outside!

If you also are parent to a kid who refuses to keep blankets on (and you don’t live in a home with zoned, adjustable heating), you can find comfort in the DeLonghi TRH0715 Oil Filled Radiator Heatericon. This heater offers 3 variable heat settings, an adjustable thermostat, and no exposed elements. It’s streamlined yet solid; we favored this traditional heavier heater over lightweight models that seemed prone to tipping or being dragged around by a toddler.

We picked up our first DeLonghi in the fall at Sears and were so thrilled with it that we went back a week later to get one for my mom (by which point they had jacked the price up $15). Who knows what they’re charging now that we’re well into winter but on SHOP.COM you can get this model starting at $47.99 (pre-shipping). If you spend over $50 be sure to take advantage of their site wide coupons (use “SHOP5” for $5 off an order of $50+, “SHOP10” for $10 off an order of $100+, and “SHOP25” for $25 off an order of $250 or more).

Perfect Panini

panini.jpg

Every now and then, a home good comes along and changes the way our household operates.

Since receiving a panini press as a gift a couple months ago, we have enjoyed pressed sandwiches every day (or sometimes several times in a day…quesadillas also work well). And since grilled cheese sandwiches are a top request from Laurel, we’ve been especially thrilled with the ease and amazing non-burn factor of this tool, which now holds a central spot on our kitchen counter.

We received a Napa Style press, but the Breadman Panini Press ($39.99 at Target.com) has similar specs at a fraction of the price, and the user reviews are very favorable.

Healthful Humidifier

humidifier.gif

Obsessive research runs in my family. While my “specialties” include domestics, art supplies, fashion, and kid stuff, my two brothers are official gadget hounds. When we needed a humidifier last winter for Laurel, not surprisingly, my brother (who thrives on medically-tested products) had a recommendation right at his fingertips. The Germ-Free Warm Mist Humidifier ($99.95 at One Step Ahead) is decidedly more functional than fashionable (in comparison to cute animal-inspired models on the market), but it is highly effective and will satisfy even them most extreme germophobe.

This dual-tank humidifier uses ultraviolet light to sterilize water (99.999% bacteria free production), and the water is vaporized to eliminate white dust, making it safer for allergy and asthma sufferers. Dimensions are 15 5/8"L x 11 3/8"W x 12"H and suit rooms up to 20 x 20 feet (400 sq. ft.). Tanks are one gallon each (nice, so you don’t have to fill them up as often), and I’m pretty sure the humidifier included starter mineral absorption pads and the UV light bulb (bulbs run at maximum output for about 2000 hours and mineral pad life depends on water content); we never needed to replace either of these items throughout last winter.

Giant Apple Spirals

applecorer.gif

In my new life as an independent contractor, I’m constantly watching the clock. I was practically out of my mind last week juggling various projects, and may not have made it to the other side of Thanksgiving without the tool that ultimately saved me countless hours in the kitchen.

The issue was this: my deliciously absurd mile high apple pie required 5½ pounds of apples. Last year when I made this pie, Jon and I toiled bitterly in the kitchen, slowly peeling, coring, and slicing while the apples turned a nasty shade of brown. This year, without the flexibility (read: lower time priority) offered by my lackluster salaried job, I decided to try an apple peeler.

The “apple machine” (as Laurel calls it) was the best kitchen purchase I have made in a long time. The tool is easy to use, and the giant pile of apples was prepped in 15 minutes. Laurel loved watching me make “giant apple spirals,” and now the apple machine gets prime kitchen shelf real estate due to frequency of use at snack time.

Available at Linens N’ Things ($19.99); similar models are available at Amazon ($21.95), and Target ($27.99).

Cookie Monster

ws_dinosaur.jpg

Rolling out cookie dough can be a bit of a high maintenance baking project, but isn't it worth it to bring dinosaurs back to life? With these super cute Dinosaur Cookie Cutters from Williams Sonoma at hand, you likely won’t have any trouble engaging your kids to help you roll, cut, and decorate these prehistoric pals.

The set of ten tin-plated steel cookie cutters ($19.50) are about 6 inches wide and include: brontosaurus, raptor, pterodactyl, triceratops, wooly mammoth, saber-toothed tiger, parasaurolophus, torosaur, tyrannosaurus, and stegosaurus.

The cookies will be extinct in no time, but the cutters are built to last.
