20 Things to Do When School Is Cancelled

umbrella.jpgWell, so. No school tomorrow. Last week was frightfully busy and my family is still recovering from the craziness of my fall travel, so this weekend I told myself, Don't work! Play with Jon and the girls! Work can wait until Monday! We enjoyed a lovely, lazy weekend and now here we are, with Monday (and possibly Tuesday) off. Part of me is a bit freaked out about all of the work I need to tend to, and part of me realizes I just need to embrace the adventure. So I thought I'd garner some inspiration from my own archives and also share them with you. Many of the ideas are fun to do with the kids while also being somewhat productive! Here's to hoping we've got power...and stay safe everyone!

On the Brink

muya-1.jpgOur final site visit in Ethiopia represented the awesome and the ironic. Muya (which means talent) is a woman-owned, fair trade business that has "made it" in many ways. In contrast to the primitive yet productive trappings of fashionABLE, Muya is situated in Addis Ababa on a rather restorative feeling compound -- a series of modern buildings (vs. wood and tin roofed huts) nestled between plenty of foliage. They make a gorgeous array of home and fashion products and produce scarves for Lemlem (which distributes to clients such as J. Crew). Yet despite their successes, they still struggle to gain footing with sellers; largely, it seems, due to outsider stereotypes of Ethiopia.

How to Create a Family Tree

family-tree-thumbnail.jpgCome this Saturday, three of my sisters will have married within seven months (!), and each celebration has served as a lovely way to reconnect with extended family. Which has prompted me to revisit my life list item about creating a family tree. Why? Because I've always found my family history (with its large and complicated branches) confusing (the levels of cousins are particularly puzzling), and it's been challenging to attempt to explain these relations when Laurel (invariably) asks.

8 Transformative Shower Curtains

shower1-WestElmCitron.jpgToday, Paige (also of Mudroom Boston and Make More, Buy Less) shares 8 transformative shower curtains (Laurel would pass out from happiness if I bought #7):

When we moved into our home two years ago, we were faced with bathrooms that were squarely stuck in early '90s decor. Forest green was the color of choice for the master bath, and though we could strip the wallpaper, changing the tile and fixtures didn't fit our budget. It was amazing how effective a gallon of wall paint and a simple striped shower curtain in soothing aquas and pale greens was in transforming the space.

9 Lovely Multifunction Trays

trays3-preppyplates.jpgToday, Paige (also of Mudroom Boston and Make More, Buy Less) shares a roundup of lovely (sometimes insanely inexpensive) multifunction trays:

In my opinion, the humble tray may be the single most useful and versatile item in a home (which may be the reason why I have at least 15 in mine). What other object can you use to: 1) serve food and drinks, 2) keep toiletries/office supplies/spices neat and tidy, 3) use as a surface for Play-Doh-creating and Lego-building, 4) capture slush and mud, and 5) decorate?

Weekly Blueprint

petit-elefant-lip-scrub.jpgGood morning friends -- I hope you had a great weekend! For the first time in what seems to be a long time, we found the perfect blend of relaxed family time, focused grownup conversation time, new adventures (roller skating!), reconnecting with old friends, taking care of household chores, and even some work time for me. It sounds like a lot but weirdly, it all came together in a very easy way and didn't ever feel as if we were pushing too hard. I need to bottle up whatever it was we did to make that happen! Meanwhile, I hope you're gearing up for a great week -- here are some handy/fun ideas to consider in this week's Weekly Blueprint:

How To Decorate With Mirrors

mirrors-1-BallardBone.jpgToday, Paige (also of Mudroom Boston and Make More, Buy Less) shares 5 awesome tips for decorating with mirrors:

When we moved into our house two summers ago, we were presented with an abundance of blank walls. Since the walls of our previous home had been covered with windows and built-ins, we hadn't had the space for a lot of art and other hanging decor. Knowing that we couldn't afford large scale art, I went on a bit of a mirror bender, trying to cover some of the blank space at a lesser cost.

12 Bits of Web Awesomeness

i-heart-massachusetts.jpgHello everyone -- I hope you have fantastically relaxing plans for the Memorial Day long weekend! We're going to be staying local and keeping it low key since June will be a bit crazy, but at the very least, yummy food and fun and games with Laurel and Violet are on the docket. (Admittedly, hopefully we'll also chip away a bit at some household to do's.) Meanwhile, I thought I'd share 12 bits of web awesomeness to entertain you over the long weekend. Enjoy!

Decluttering Strategies & Solutions

pottery-barn-beachcomber-basket.jpgI had a fantastic time chatting with Paige Lewin of Mudroom Boston this week on Life.Style about decluttering strategies and solutions. Paige shared fantastic ideas for conquering clutter in the kitchen, playroom, mudroom (or entryway), and on bookshelves. I finished the interview inspired to -- at the very least -- attack our two kitchen drawers full of random odds and ends this weekend. Check out the episode for full commentary, inspiration, and photos. And for easy reference, below are links that were shared during the interview. Enjoy!

Dear Boston Mamas: Minimalist Nursery

moses-basket.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from Katie via the Boston Mamas Facebook page:

Dear Boston Mamas, I am looking for ideas on how to incorporate a nursery/baby area into our guestroom/study. We don't have a lot of room, and this is my first baby -- what do I need and what don't I need? Where should I get things?

Pop & Lolli Wall Art

pop-and-lolli.jpgToday, Heather shares a review of Pop & Lolli's fabric wall art. Read on for Heather's review, as well as to learn how to win a Pop & Lolli wall art kit of your own:

If my oldest daughter had her way, she would change her room décor almost as frequently as she changes her clothes...which is a lot! Since she's recently changed from favoring penguins to owls, it's tough to predict what 2011 will bring. Fortunately for her, I have long been a fan of removable, peel and stick wall art. Wall art is a terrific, fun, and easy way to transform a room without a big commitment. We now have removable wall art in the kids' bedrooms, play room, and finished basement. It's also fun that my four kids are able to decorate (almost) all by themselves!

Easy Staircase Gallery Walls

staircase-wall-gallery-1.JPGOne thing I have procrastinated on for over two years is hanging pictures in our home. But thanks to inspiration from a recent Life.Style episode (re: photo gifts and décor), this post on creating gallery walls, and probably the fact that we're entertaining a lot over the coming weeks, this weekend I got over my fear of hammer and nail. And now? My home is about 3000 times more cozy! I wanted to share the easy how-to for creating staircase gallery walls. Admittedly, I still leave the big hanging projects (as in, you need to find studs in the wall and wield a drill) to Jon, but I did a lot of hanging (here's everything we hung and how the project related to my life list).

Odorless & Eco-Friendly Paint

benjamin-moore-natura-paint.jpgI'm not sure whether it's due to our full docket of holiday entertaining over the next couple of weeks or pure maternal nesting mode, but I've been tackling a lot of home projects lately. And last weekend, I became obsessed with the need to repaint a console table that, ironically, I last painted when I was pregnant with Laurel. And given that I'm 27 weeks pregnant and Laurel wanted to help paint, finding an odorless, eco-friendly paint was important for this project. Here's how our project turned out:

Fabulous Tips From Nate Berkus

nate-berkus.jpgLast week I had the pleasure of being in on a joint blogger interview with the talented (and adorable) Nate Berkus. I met Nate in NYC this past summer and he is gracious, down to earth, and truly inspiring in his passions. Nate is doing a series of "Nate's Crate" shows (through which he delivers surprises) that I want to check out, and it was fun to glean some of his wisdom last week -- we covered everything from simple holiday solutions to affordable décor ideas to paying it forward. I'm now super inspired as Jon and I march forward on some interior design plans (both because of the baby and because it's simply taken us a long time to get around to settling since moving into our home over two years ago). Here were some of my favorite tips/takeaways from the interview:

Two Local Stylish Finds

lady-luxe.jpgToday, parent educator Hetti Wohlgemuth of Alphabet Soup 4 Parents takes a departure from parenting advice to recommend two stylish local finds:

Given my apparent talent for spilling black coffee, chocolate ice cream, and ketchup on myself, I don't like spending lots of money on clothing. For me, it's not worth it to ruin expensive clothes and it's good to tighten the spending belt when a bad economy threatens us. That said, I still like to shop, dress well, and look professional. Here are two Boston area shops to try that won't break the bank.

Perfect Storage Solution

effektiv-1.jpgEven though we've been in our home for two years, we're still not completely settled, and one area of the house that troubled me for a long time was our dining room. We have one big wall and I had no idea what to do with it. A single sideboard seemed pricey while not filling the space and what I really needed was a lot of storage to accommodate the contents of Laurel's open bookcase (that was exploding with art supplies), and other platters and vases and things. I recently hit on the perfect storage solution and several visitors have since asked me for the specifics about our setup so I thought I would share it here.

Birthday Giveaway: Artistic Sensations

Offering a wide variety of themes and styles to outfit kids' rooms, I'm especially drawn towards their organic bedding, which includes sweetly patterned and cozy looking options that make me feel happily sleepy just looking at them online. DIY Inspiration Boards

inspiration-boards-1.JPGNext month will mark the second year of living in our not so new, new house, and we are just getting around to hanging things on the wall. Seriously. Part of the delay is attributable to uncertainty (and repeated testing) about where furniture should finally land, and part because some wall hangings required crafting. A couple of weeks ago I finally got around to assembling inspiration boards for my office and my workspace is now approaching a cosmic level of awesome. Read on for the how-to; these boards would be great in other areas of the home as well.

Multifunctional Modern Mix

flor-modern-mix.jpgJon and I are all about everyday teaching moments with Laurel, apparently even when it comes to assembling a FLOR rug. We recently installed Modern Mix Tan in our sitting nook -- I adore how the Modern Mix collection offers pattern through tonal variations while remaining neutral enough to go with anything else -- and the process quickly evolved into a game for Laurel. The set comes with a 6 x 5 matrix recommending tile color placement for the 4 tile shades (we simply followed a 3 x 4 section of the matrix for our 5’ x 7’ rug), and the tan variations had the yummy names bran, honey wheat, sourdough, and rye. Laurel found this hilarious and immediately set to task sorting the tiles by grain name then arranging the tiles based on the matrix (an impromptu game of memory to remember which grain went with which matrix number...). You just can’t beat unexpectedly family friendly home improvement projects that yield a cozy and warm space for more fun and games.

Now, want to win a 5’ x 7’ FLOR rug? Here’s how:

Stoked About STOKKE

stokke-tripp-trapp.jpgWhen first tasked to buy baby gear, it can be challenging to navigate the options; in particular the tradeoff between investing in more expensive long term solutions vs. inexpensive short term solutions. I tend to gravitate towards the former, and am particularly drawn to items (e.g., our convertible crib) that can convert and accommodate kids as they grow. Treasure Hunting, Part II

ajwright.JPGPursuant to my report on treasure hunting at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, here’s my report on shopping at AJWright. Having never stepped into an AJWright prior to the blogger tour and shopping event, I didn’t have the same experienced eye for layout and inventory as I did walking into the T.J. Treasure Hunting, Part I

tjmaxx.jpgThere’s something to be said for paying for an experience; say, first class airline tickets, a meal at a chic restaurant that will stow luggage while you shop (as did Stephanie’s on Newbury, where I took a visiting friend yesterday), or spa services that create a truly calming environment (compared to the bargain nail salon where I bang away on my Blackberry so I can work while getting a pedicure). But when it comes to clothing and accessories, generally speaking, I’m all about getting the best bargain. And that’s why I was intrigued to learn about treasure hunting at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and AJWright last week. I’ll address T.J. Maxx and Marshalls here and AJWright in a follow up post, given that these were separate events.

Birthday Giveaway: Chroma Lab

chroma-lab-boston.jpgMy passion for color truly blossomed during my postdoctoral fellowship (where I felt rather confined within grey cinderblock walls), and whether I'm perusing clothing, paper, décor, or textiles, I gravitate towards bold, modern, and pretty patterns. So it’s no wonder I adore Boston-based Chroma Lab’s bright and fresh wares. Skilled restorers of vintage furniture, Chroma Lab also creates pieces to order, such as their hand crafted birch plywood clocks, painted in cheery graphic patterns and a glossy finish. Clever Custom Window Treatments

clever-windows_thumb.JPGI’m thrilled to introduce new contributor Paige, a home décor guru among many other things. Today, Paige shares a ridiculously clever idea for custom window treatments:

“I believe that window treatments are like mascara for rooms – you don’t have to have them, but when you do, the room looks finished. I’ve had a long, sordid history with window treatments – not really loving most inexpensive pre-made ones and having limited ability to make more unique ones because of sub-par sewing skills and (cue the standard motherhood excuse) lack of time.

Art at the Right Level

art1.jpgToday, April shares a cool, kid friendly home art solution:

“Over time, we've collected a bunch of art for our daughter. Not all of it is meant for kids, but all of the content is kid-available. Some of it is new, some of it is from my own collection when I was a child. We choose art that we all will like, so it fits in to our home - nothing super childish and nothing that's so out of reach that she doesn't fall in love with it. In keeping with art that is both high quality and within my daughter’s grasp, we recently created a gallery just for her, and just at her height. To look at "her art," she doesn't need to be lifted up high or crane her neck. The gallery is doorknob and toddler-level. That means she's free to peruse, stare, and wonder at any time.

Wake Up Meow

catalarmclock.jpgDespite the fact that Laurel wakes up in time to her internal clock, she’s recently become interested in learning to tell time and asked for an alarm clock bedside. I wasn’t about to deter her interest in routine, and thus was thrilled to learn about the Chocolate Cake Club’s ultra cute talking alarm clocks for kids. Laurel loves the cat clock, which meows as its wake up call. And while we wish the alarm volume was adjustable for our (admittedly sensitive) ears (taping a little square of cardboard across the back speaker did the trick though), otherwise this clock wins our raves. The bright and cheery retro styling gives props to the predigital days, and the irresistibly cute face has boosted Laurel’s curiosity about learning to read the clock hands. We love that she now definitely knows when bed time is.

Chalk It Up

wallcandyarts.gifAs an avid list maker, I start each day by jotting down 1-2 major and several minor (read: easy) to do items for the day. But I used to do this on envelope backs or scrap paper; basically, on sheets that quickly got buried under other things on my desk. That is, until I discovered the perfect solution in WallCandy ArtsChalkboard Circles. Part of WallCandy's clever chalkboard wall art series, these decals make for cool, graphic décor, are handy for covering up wall blemishes, and display your notes (or your kid’s doodles) in a prominent space. The generously sized circles come 4 to a pack, and the surface treatment makes it super easy to wipe off chalk (included) with the swipe of a fingertip. Who knew list making – and erasing – could be so fun?

Nest Transitions

nest.jpgWhether it’s due to laziness, a desire to not rush the process, or not having a 2nd child waiting for the crib (one of my girlfriends needed to transition her older daughter early to a big girl bed when #2 was on the way, and the older child responded by climbing into the crib, removing her diaper, and leaving an unpleasant surprise…), it occurs to me that we’ve had a tendency to let Laurel’s growth - or, let’s face it, claustrophobia – determine her nest transitions.

Extreme Makeover

funtosee.gifWhether you share my status as an apartment dweller with walls made challenging to adorn by aged plaster or attic-level angling, or simply want a blissfully easy kid’s décor solution, check out Fun To See’s room makeover kits. Available in a variety of general or character-specific themes, these wall stickers are impressively easy to remove, stick, and reposition, and Laurel had enormous fun transforming her room with the Fairies kit. This set creates a truly lovely sense of depth via the varied sticker sizing (from 3 inches to almost 3 feet!), and the striking contrast between the colorful, detailed fairy and wildlife illustrations against the simple, peaceful elegance of the nature silhouettes.

Marvelous MiGi

migi_splash.jpgAs someone now professionally obsessed with color and fabric, one of my aesthetic regrets from Laurel’s babyhood is that I didn’t properly outfit her crib. All the individual bedding component options (and their price tags) quickly overwhelmed me; so Laurel didn't have much else other than a lonely little crib sheet and blanket.

A Desk to Call Your Own

ikea_vika.gif

Over the years, Jon and I have received repeated confirmation that making space in life and taking leaps of faith – whether they are physical, financial, or emotional – allows good things to breathe into existence. We’ve found this to be the case with situations as mundane as unexpectedly receiving household items right after getting rid of older versions (but before buying replacements), and as important as quitting unbearable jobs before figuring out the next step (and then having an opportunity open up).

Cool Doodling

offidesk.gif

For your budding artist, Kate has praise for this welcome upgrade of classic grade school desks:

“Our 17-month old daughter has become increasingly interested in arts and crafts over the past few months - encouraged by her wonderful daycare teachers - so we started stocking fun art supplies and decided that it would be a good idea to have a designated art space in the apartment, both to foster her creativity and independence and to try to preserve our floors and furniture from stray marks. Many companies sell desks and chairs for toddlers, but they often are large and require more space than we have to spare in a city apartment. Fortunately, the Offi Doodle Desk provides the perfect solution: an all-in-one seat, desk, and storage drawer, the Doodle Desk is a good size and shape for little artists, while being stylish and space-efficient enough to suit most parents. Available in sky blue and orange, the Doodle Desk features a pine veneer which is remarkably easy to clean: most child-friendly markers and paints wash right off."

Deep Sea Bedding

masonmatisse.gif

I’m afraid Laurel has been ready to transition out of the crib for some time now, and we’ve totally been dragging our heels about it due to inconvenience. We don’t use gates in our house, which isn’t a problem during the day, but seems disastrous for night. (Although I know a family who, rather hilariously, has dealt with this issue by teaching their daughter to knock from inside her bedroom door when she wants to come out.) Plus, the freedom of a big bed seems likely to fuel Laurel’s periodic midday nap resistance.

But the cool bedding collection available at Mason & Matisse might just inspire change. This boutique features modern furnishings, clothing, gear, and toys; we especially love the Deep Sea bedding, whose fun underwater graphics are represented in a gender neutral, refreshing color palette (shown; $119 for duvet and pillow sham set; $58 for coordinating fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillow case set).

Express Yourself

yoon_birdtree.gif

The parenting journey thus far has made it clear that little people have passions. Laurel and her friends have long shown fierce devotion to certain areas of play and expression, whether it is art or song or books or trains.

Now you can express your child’s passion via YoonKids, a collection of hip, customized wall art suitable for babies to tweens. YoonKids allow for the ultimate expression of kids’ passions and diversity; choose a themed kid (e.g., girl drummer), background color, hair and skin color (hooray!), and canvas size. YoonKids currently are available in girl designs; the boy line is forthcoming. Other collections include the Yoonies, an endearing series of chubby, wobbly critters (pick a character, background color, and size), and the Silhouettes line, which features classic imagery - such as the gorgeous, vibrant Bird Tree (shown) - styled with modern graphics in cool color palettes.

Built To Last

lilipad.jpg

These days, environmentally conscious parents have ample cause for concern about the world our children will inherit. Lucky for us, amazing artisans committed to stylish sustainable design are working tirelessly for parents and the environment.

Lilipad Studio offers a stunning collection of children’s hand-painted furniture that is eco-friendly from start to finish. Furniture is built using FSC-certified responsibly forested hardwood; each piece then is intricately painted using non-toxic, no/VOC paints, and finished with three coats of a low-VOC sealer to render durable, easy-to-clean heirloom quality pieces.

Lilipad’s totally green collection currently includes table and chair sets and step stools; toy chests and toddler beds are forthcoming. We especially love the warmth and elegance of the Butterfly Rhapsody collection, which includes 10 1/2" step stools (shown; two-step stool; $300) and table and chair sets ($1100; $300 per additional chair).

Couture Keepsakes

keepsakeconcepts.gif

A recent conversation with a girlfriend who is planning a wedding shower reminded me of what a challenge favors can be in party planning; it’s tough to find meaningful, pretty, or useful favors that don't break the bank.

Coincidentally, we just learned about a nifty twist in the favor market that comes from Keepsake Concepts. Keepsake Concepts' Couture Keepsakes line takes traditional candy favors to a new level by encasing them in sweet, little outfits that will last long after the Jordan almonds are gone. These impressively appointed favors, which come on wooden hangers in styles for wedding, boys, and girls (shown, Emily, $5.50) measure 4.5"L x 3.5W" and include a miniature wooden clothespin that holds your custom message tag. These keepsakes can serve as party favors or baby announcements, and would preserve beautifully in a shadow box, or make for easy décor hung on a nail or a cute little clothesline.

One Stop Style

blablamobile.gif

I certainly appreciate, and have benefited from, the practicality of baby shower registries, but sometimes you stumble on a seriously fabulous shower gift that warrants diverting from more mundane necessities.

Case in point: Pink Olive Boutique's stock of beautiful, vivid blabla knits. Especially impressive is the Small Jungle Mobile (shown; $78), a hand knitted work of art measuring 8” in diameter. We also love the cheerful ladybug booties and hat ($28 each).

Pink Olive just launched in November but this web boutique carries a cool collection of chic baby items, gifts, and stylish warm weather getaway gear. And Pink Olive is offering Boston Mamas readers a little New Year's gift; type “Boston Mamas” in the comments box before checking out to receive free ground shipping on orders over $50. Perfect Frames

targetpewterframe.jpg

I have this terrible retail habit of developing an idea in my head of what I want, and then being repeatedly disappointed when I can’t find it out in the world. It’s a problem with perfectionism that is proving resistant to therapeutic intervention.

But I digress. As I have mentioned before, given Laurel’s love of painting, we have great fodder for very cool holiday art gifts. Yesterday I decided to try Target again for frames; I wanted a combination of elegance and quality for cheap (don’t we all?) and every time I visit Target I always hope that the frame in my mind (simple matted format, but in small, single window sizes) will appear. I braced myself for disappointment, given numerous failed missions to date, plus the possibility that the stores would be demolished after the shopping weekend.

I literally heard angels singing when I arrived at the frame section and found my dream frame in a number of sizes and finishes. The 4 x 4” Thin Metal Pewter Frame (shown, $7.99; 8 x 8 frame, white mat with a 4 x 4 inch opening) and the 4 x 6” Wide-Mat Maple Frame ($9.99; 8 x 10 frame, white mat with a 4 x 6 inch opening) are especially pretty for creating gallery style photos or art, and are exactly what I had conjured in my head.

Round Realism

giraffe.gif

I'm continually amazed by how well little ones are able to abstract animals from simple shapes or cartoons; but if you’re looking for more realistic, kid-friendly art, check out the amazing collection of Round Art critters at PoshTots.

Offering a modern aesthetic that will last well beyond the baby years, each print originates from an acrylic painting that has been scanned and printed on watercolor paper; the print is mounted on plywood and coated in acrylic for protection. The back features a keyhole for easy hanging.

This collection includes an ark-load of animals (badger, bear, cat, dog, elephant, giraffe, gopher, ladybug, leopard, panda, peacock, penguin, sheep, zebra) set against modern, vibrant background color options (shown, Giraffe Round Art in Bright Orange) in three sizes ($17 for 5 inch, $22 for 7 inch, $32 for 10 inch at PoshTots).

Lucky Star

yellowstar.jpg

When we moved this summer, Laurel’s new room seemed cavernous compared to her old room. She was scared of the big new space and her previously easy sleeping routine went out the window; we needed to up the cozy factor in a hurry. Laurel definitively wanted a yellow rug and I was thrilled to discover the Shaggy Raggy Rug collection. Made of hand dyed 100% cotton, this soft, nubbly rug instantly transformed Laurel’s room, has fascinated all of her little pals, and is so comfortable that we love stretching out on it during play or quiet reading time.

This rug series is offered in a variety of fabulous colors and shapes at Shop.com (see our bargains page for coupon codes); we ordered the 4.7’ x 7.7’ ($338) rectangle and matching 3’ x 3’ star ($78; shown). Life has been grand ever since!
