make-and-takes.jpgWow, what a weekend. Poor Vi has been suffering since Wednesday and we're still not out of the woods. It's been a challenging several days, but also included a major revelation. I'm wishing all of you and your little ones excellent health! Meanwhile, here are some handy/fun ideas to consider in this week's Weekly Blueprint:

A Lesson from Mr. Hatch

somebody-loves-you-mr-hatch.jpgToday, Paige (also of Mudroom Boston) shares a beloved book, good for Valentine's Day or any day:

"Mr. Hatch was tall and thin and he did not smile." And so begins the story of Mr. Hatch, a lonesome man who leads a gray and dreary life. He leaves his house at precisely 6:30am for his job at the shoelace factory every day, sits alone and eats his cheese and mustard sandwich for lunch every day, and stops at the grocery store for a fresh turkey wing for dinner every day. And then one day, a day unlike every other day, the postman changes Mr. Hatch's world when he delivers a giant heart-shaped box of chocolates, complete with a special Valentine's note. "Somebody loves you," the note says. But who?

Valentine's Day Crafts & Treats

valentine-figs.jpgHappy February! While I don't pay much attention to Valentine's Day from a commercial standpoint -- Jon and I don't exchange gifts -- the day does offer a fun inspiration point for crafts and food around our house. (Plus, I love the colors red and pink!) As I've mentioned before, I adore Pinterest and decided to round up 10 pretty craft and treat ideas that caught my pinning eye. Oh, and if you need a Pinterest invite, drop me a line and I'll be happy to send you one! Enjoy!

Finding & Nurturing Relationships

life-style-episode-11.jpgWhat a fun episode of Life.Style this week! I chatted about finding and nurturing relationships with Kristen Chase, author of The Mominatrix's Guide to Sex, and Meredith Goldstein of the Boston Globe Love Letters column. During the show we discussed everything from common issues for those in or looking for relationships, advice for those seeking or trying to maintain relationships, and the pulse on Hallmark holidays such as Valentine's Day. Check out the episode for full commentary and inspiration, and for easy reference, below are the conversation point links that were shared during the interviews. Enjoy!

Valentine's on the Odyssey

odyssey.jpgIn contrast to Jon and my low key approach, Laurel is totally cranked up about celebrating Valentine's Day. If you're in a similar boat, and are looking for a family-friendly Valentine's outing, what about the Odyssey's Valentine's brunch cruise? You'll achieve a sense of escape (undoubtedly welcome, given the recent plague of snowstorms...) without the fuss of needing to pack. I haven't yet experienced the Odyssey, but I dig the idea of cruising along against the backdrop of our city skyline while listening to live music, enjoying brunch I didn't have to cook, not worrying about washing dishes, and gazing lovingly at Jon while Laurel ogles the chocolate fountain.

And how cool is this? The Odyssey kindly is offering one lucky winner a family four-pack of tickets for the Valentine's Odyssey brunch cruise. Here's how to enter to win:

I Heart You

love-stamp-kit.jpgAs regular readers know, Laurel adores crafts. She also adores holidays. In fact, one of the unexpectedly excellent qualities of the potted Christmas tree I pushed for this year (we plan on planting the tree come spring) is that once we took down the Christmas decorations, Laurel realized she had a blank canvas for...you guessed it...making it a Valentine's Day tree. (Actually, she first suggested creating a Martin Luther King Day tree except it took us too long to remove the Christmas decorations.)

Rosebud Valentines

rosebud-valentines-1.JPGThough we’re very crafty at home, I love when Laurel comes home with new ideas from her art classes at school. And last week I was blown away by the awesomeness of this rosebud Valentine project. These Valentines are a tad time consuming if you make the hearts as big as Laurel did (about ¾ of a sheet of paper) so she’s just making a few for some special sweethearts. Alternatively, you could make them smaller (perhaps cutting 8.5 x 11” sheets of paper into four equal pieces and cutting hearts from those rectangles). The effect will still be spectacularly heartfelt. Here’s the how-to:

Valentine's Day at Hill House

heart.jpgAs you may have gathered from yesterday’s Valentine’s Day post, I think it’s important to spread the love within your family and also to those in need. And the cool folks over at Hill House are inviting families to do just that at their free, open to the public Valentine’s Day party tomorrow (3-6pm). In addition to Valentine’s crafts and activities, families are invited to write letters and donate items for a care package drive to support military troops via New England Caring for our Military.
