Give the Gift of Dignity. And a Gorgeous Scarf Too.

Genet-thumbnail.jpgOne of the most beautiful things about the online space is how incredibly nimble people can be to make awesome things happen. In October when I traveled to Ethiopia as part of the ONE Moms delegation, our team created such an online stir about fashionABLE that they were able to create three new jobs. This past winter, fellow Ethiopia companion and dear friend Gabrielle Blair, of Design Mom and Alt Summit, worked with ONE and fashionABLE to challenge the Alt community to design an exclusive ONE/fashionABLE Mother's Day scarf. And today the beautiful Genet scarf is available for purchase (with free shipping today and tomorrow).

Weekly Blueprint

shen-yun.jpgHappy Monday everyone -- I hope you had a wonderful weekend! I will admit to being somewhat oblivious to the groundhog and Superbowl oriented elements of the weekend. Instead, there was a lot of toddler chasing and care (Vi's milk-related rash is finally dissipating...hooray!), household puttering and decluttering, and I also did something I've been wanting to do for a long time: hosted a delightful get together for the Boston Mamas contributing writers. I'm excited to get back to work today and hope you all have a fantastic week. Here are some fun event ideas to consider in this week's Weekly Blueprint:

mlk-melindajonesart.jpgHello folks, I hope you're enjoying a wonderful, windy weekend. I'm struggling to shake the dreaded sore throat, but otherwise it's been a lovely weekend here! Given that tomorrow is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and many of you will be off with your kids, I wanted to share the Weekly Blueprint a day early in case it's helpful for your planning. There are lots of activities going on in and around town tomorrow, whether you want to explore cultural offerings, listen to music, do community crafts, or engage in service. Have a wonderful rest of the weekend!

Simple & Elegant Anytime Cards

pinhole-2013.jpgI love sending and receiving holiday cards. And since becoming a parent, I have fully embraced that it doesn't really matter when you send them -- the point is to reconnect in a way that matters to you whenever you have the chance to do it. (For example, one year we sent our holiday greetings in March...we had many people tell us they loved receiving cards off peak season!) As has become the norm, my holiday cards did not make it out before Christmas (the last batch is going out in the mail today), and it was so delightful to create them and even hand write the addresses. And Pinhole Press made the process absurdly easy.

Colorful Vegetarian Lasagna

ACS-Badge.pngI'm so proud to work with the American Cancer Society and it was super fun to put together A Healthier Holiday Table, a crowd-sourced repository of recipes to help inspire people to eat well. Come share a recipe! Today, I'm sharing a colorful vegetarian lasagna I recently made; it's great if you have a vegetarian in the house (as we do with Laurel) or want to take a break from meat (as Jon and I periodically do); I bump up the protein by adding tofu. Also, it's fast, easy, and kids can help (Laurel chopped the vegetables and did all the layering). And since I'm obsessed with crockpots, I'm thinking about tossing this whole thing in there next time!

10 Tips For Preserving Holiday Mental Health

hands-star.jpgToday, Jules shares ten tips for preserving holiday mental health:

Too often, the joy of the holiday season gets overshadowed by family drama and stress. But you can say no to this drama and stress -- by shifting your perspective and sometimes yielding to others (particularly when you're more bound up by the drama than the actual parameters of the situation). Today I'm writing with my clinical social worker hat on; here are ten tips for preserving your holiday mental health:

Weekly Blueprint

candles.jpgHello everyone, what a surreal few days it has been. My heart is heavy for the Newtown, CT community, and the ripple effect clearly has been wide. I have mixed emotions about the responses I've seen to this tragedy and I'm not sure I can articulate them all. So for now, I will simply say that I'm sending healing mojo into the universe for everyone and hope we can all find meaning in this that will help us move forward and also honor the spirit of the victims. And now I will return to business and share some event ideas to consider via this week's Weekly Blueprint. Im wishing you all a week of peace and healing.

For example, Asha has shared wonderful and useful ideas on how to shorten your gift list and to-do list, and focus on easy holiday rituals. And this weekend, Laurel and I will be working on easy kid crafted and DIY food gifts, and I will most certainly be rocking the crockpot. Happy reading, and enjoy this roundup of 21 events for the weekend:

Minimalist Holidays: Crockpots are Sexy

MinimalistParenting_holidays-badge.pngFor me, part of minimalist parenting means getting rid of stuff and operating with less. However, I do enjoy cooking and baking and recently started experimenting with a slow cooker (specifically, the Ninja 3-in-1, which I received as a gift), which I have deemed totally worthy of countertop real estate. I've admittedly grown a little obsessed with slow cooking (and subsequently have poked fun at myself by starting the hashtag #crockpotsaresexy on Twitter), so as part of Asha and my Minimalist Holidays series (be sure to click over and check out the other great posts!), today I wanted to share 8 reasons why crockpots can simplify your mealtime prep, Perfect for the busy holiday season!

10 Ways to Green Your Holidays

green-bike.jpgToday, Judy (also of Talking Thirty) shares 10 simple ways to green your holidays:

The holidays can be a magical time of year for many reasons, but the reality is that the environment suffers. According to the Ecology Center, Americans throw away an additional 5 million tons of trash between Thanksgiving and New Year's eve. It's not hard to imagine how the holidays can wreak environmental havoc, what with overproduction and excessive purchasing of consumer goods, pounds of discarded gift wrap, product packaging, and food waste, thousands of Christmas trees cut down for less than one month of use, and gallons of fuel used for the transport of goods and holiday travel. However, there are little things we can all do to help reduce the toll on the environment. Here are 10 ways to green your holiday season:

Weekly Blueprint

aha-new-bedford.jpgHappy Monday everyone -- I hope you had a great weekend! This was an unusually busy weekend for us, which Jon and I kicked off by attending the Room to Grow fundraising gala (this organization does amazing work for babies 0-3 years of age and their families -- if you don't know about them already, check them out!), and then we also celebrated birthdays for family members and baby friends. It's back to work now, though, and for today's Weekly Blueprint I wanted to share event ideas for the week and also some great holiday gift guides (since I never seem to get around to creating one here at Boston Mamas). Have a great week!

boston-ballet-Gene-Schiavone.jpgHappy Monday everyone -- I hope you had a wonderful weekend! Laurel, Violet, and I had a lovely girls day on Saturday (for the record, the easiness and affordability of Trader Joe's gingerbread house kits was perfect...you should have seen Vi's face when she discovered that the icing was not just glue!) and yesterday Laurel and I enjoyed a wonderful outing to see The Nutcracker, courtesy of the Boston Ballet. The new production is utterly gorgeous and the whole experience magical -- I hope you consider attending this year (definitely check out half price ticket availability)! massart-Criscione_Perc.jpgHappy Friday everyone! December is tomorrow, can you believe it? I can't quite gear myself up to decorate immediately after Thanksgiving, but December 1 officially feels festive to me. Laurel, Violet, and I are having a girls day tomorrow and I'm getting excited (Laurel is out of her mind excited...) to hang stockings, decorate a little, build gingerbread houses, and perhaps do a little shopping to support local businesses. Minimalist Holidays: 14 Kid Crafted Gifts

MinimalistParenting_holidays-badge.pngI'm a big fan of getting kids crafting; it doesn't need to be over the top and it absolutely shouldn't be stressful -- the point is to simply let your kid's creativity run loose with whatever you've got on hand...while also freeing you up for a stretch of quiet time. The holidays are a great time to inspire kids to create and give and today, as part of Asha and my Minimalist Holidays series, I wanted to share 14 ideas for kid crafted gifts. The ideas span a range of ability and interests and in minimalist parenting fashion, I recommend trying projects that seem doable and fun for both you (as set up person) and your child (as crafter). Meaning, don't stress about trying to be more crafty than you want to be -- simply pick something that feels fun and run with it. Enjoy!

Giveaway Goodness: Mayor's Holiday Special

BlueManGroup.jpgGiven my ever present desire to declutter (particularly around this time of year), I'm a huge fan of experiential gifts. And I've found that experiential gifts are particularly awesome for kids; they negate said clutter, offer an opportunity for togetherness, create lasting memories (Laurel's most vivid gift memories are shows she has attended), and can inspire new or fuel existing interests. Not surprisingly then, I'm super excited that the Mayor's Holiday Special is back for another season, and thanks to their generosity, I've got a great giveaway for you today!

Let's Talk Turkey

turkey.jpgToday, Hillary of Mass Audubon shares fun turkey facts you can impress your kids (and guests!) with next week:

Now that the Halloween candy stash is all but depleted, chances are you're thinking less pumpkin and more turkey. We make turkey-inspired crafts, we contemplate whether or not to brine, and we look forward to turkey leftovers. But, there's more to the turkey than just serving as the Thanksgiving centerpiece. In fact, its story is actually quite dramatic.

8 Ways to Reduce Holiday Stress

heart-candles.jpgToday, Jane (also of see jane blog) shares her tried and true tips for reducing holiday stress for the whole family:

Particularly as a mother, I've noticed over the years that the holidays can be both difficult and joyful -- for kids and adults. Big expectations tend to provoke stress: Getting the right gifts for friends and family. Doing well on final exams. Seeing family members you haven't seen in a long time. Saying yes to every invitation and demand on your time. Also, extended time together allows more opportunities for emotions to rise to the surface. Here I share what I have found to be the most effective ways to reduce holiday stress, for my immediate family of six and beyond:

Feel Good Candy

unreal.jpgIf you've been trying to find less-bad-for-you candy to fill your Halloween bowl (or less-bad-for-you treats for your own stash), here's a new brand that Jon, Laurel, and I dig. I first tried UNREAL at SocialLuxe in NYC this past summer, and recently sampled the remaining of the suite of five classic candy replicas. They're a pretty close approximation to the classics in taste (ah, sweet delicious nougat...), but the really good news? They're made from responsibly sourced ingredients while containing less sugar, more protein and fiber, and no corn syrup, hydrogenated oil, synthetic colors, and other undesirables.

Handling Mother's Day Challenges

apple-heart.jpgToday, Debbie (also of Two Adopt Two) shares ideas for handling emotional challenges around Mother's Day:

Mother's Day seems easy, celebrating what our moms do for us. But it's not easy for every child. My children, for instance, are adopted. They don't remember their birthmother, but they do miss their foster mother from time to time. They have several friends for whom Mother's Day is sometimes challenging as well. Some have two mothers, one has two fathers, and a few have parents who divorced and remarried. Creative, loving intervention can help everyone enjoy the day. Here are some suggestions to handle Mother's Day challenges.

Cabbage & Carbonara

cabbage.jpgToday, Jules shares two recipes to honor Irish and Roman culture:

My kids are half Irish, so I'm committed to introducing them to celebratory fare in March -- and especially committed to doing so without the soggy, salty corned beef and cabbage meals sometimes found in previous generations. In honor of St. Patrick's Day and the Ides of March, I have created two updates on traditional Irish and Roman foods...and some small, fun history lessons to share with the kids along the way. A Lesson from Mr. Hatch

somebody-loves-you-mr-hatch.jpgToday, Paige (also of Mudroom Boston) shares a beloved book, good for Valentine's Day or any day:

"Mr. Hatch was tall and thin and he did not smile." And so begins the story of Mr. Hatch, a lonesome man who leads a gray and dreary life. He leaves his house at precisely 6:30am for his job at the shoelace factory every day, sits alone and eats his cheese and mustard sandwich for lunch every day, and stops at the grocery store for a fresh turkey wing for dinner every day. And then one day, a day unlike every other day, the postman changes Mr. Hatch's world when he delivers a giant heart-shaped box of chocolates, complete with a special Valentine's note. "Somebody loves you," the note says. But who?

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular starring the Radio City Rockettes recently debuted their new show in Boston and runs through December 28. And how cool is this? Valentine's on the Odyssey

odyssey.jpgIn contrast to Jon and my low key approach, Laurel is totally cranked up about celebrating Valentine's Day. If you're in a similar boat, and are looking for a family-friendly Valentine's outing, what about the Odyssey's Valentine's brunch cruise? You'll achieve a sense of escape (undoubtedly welcome, given the recent plague of snowstorms...) without the fuss of needing to pack. I haven't yet experienced the Odyssey, but I dig the idea of cruising along against the backdrop of our city skyline while listening to live music, enjoying brunch I didn't have to cook, not worrying about washing dishes, and gazing lovingly at Jon while Laurel ogles the chocolate fountain.

And how cool is this? The Odyssey kindly is offering one lucky winner a family four-pack of tickets for the Valentine's Odyssey brunch cruise. Here's how to enter to win:

I Heart You

love-stamp-kit.jpgAs regular readers know, Laurel adores crafts. She also adores holidays. In fact, one of the unexpectedly excellent qualities of the potted Christmas tree I pushed for this year (we plan on planting the tree come spring) is that once we took down the Christmas decorations, Laurel realized she had a blank canvas for...you guessed it...making it a Valentine's Day tree. (Actually, she first suggested creating a Martin Luther King Day tree except it took us too long to remove the Christmas decorations.)

Fabulous Tips From Nate Berkus

nate-berkus.jpgLast week I had the pleasure of being in on a joint blogger interview with the talented (and adorable) Nate Berkus. I met Nate in NYC this past summer and he is gracious, down to earth, and truly inspiring in his passions. Nate is doing a series of "Nate's Crate" shows (through which he delivers surprises) that I want to check out, and it was fun to glean some of his wisdom last week -- we covered everything from simple holiday solutions to affordable décor ideas to paying it forward. I'm now super inspired as Jon and I march forward on some interior design plans (both because of the baby and because it's simply taken us a long time to get around to settling since moving into our home over two years ago). life-style-episode-4.jpgIf you didn't have a chance to watch episode 4 of Life.Style live on Thursday, please check it out! It was a fantastic episode, in which Paige Lewin of Mudroom Boston shared easy and inexpensive tips for holiday décor and tabletops, Jane Maynard of This Week for Dinner offered fantastic recipes for traditional side dishes, twist-on-traditional side dishes, and perfect-for-potluck dishes, and Sheri Gurock of Magic Beans shared great ideas for toys to keep babies, toddlers, and older kids entertained while traveling. Check out the segment to see additional images, video, and inspiration, but as promised, for easy reference below I link up recipes and leads shared by my guests. Enjoy!

Thanksgiving Solutions

table-setting.jpgI'm not sure what my problem is, but I'm having the hardest time wrapping my brain around the fact that Thanksgiving (my favorite holiday!) is next week. If you also need help getting in the holiday spirit, and/or want to pick up some awesome tips and inspiration, tune in to Life.Style with Christine Koh tomorrow at 1pm EST. I'll have three wonderful guests on to share fantastically easy and chic holiday décor and table setting ideas, great Thanksgiving recipes (spanning traditional, less traditional, and perfect-for-potluck), and awesome picks for travel toys for kids and babies (to burn those hours in the car or on a plane or train next week). You're welcome to call in or tweet questions during the live episode, or e-mail me a question in advance to pose to the experts.

Life.Style Halloween + Real Food

life-style-episode-2.jpgHi folks, if you missed episode 2 of Life.Style with Christine Koh, I highly encourage you check it out. In addition to covering some great Halloween food and craft ideas, most of the episode was devoted to eating real food. I interviewed three fantastic guests: Meagan Francis (a mother of 5 from Michigan), who shared great tips for feeding a large family on a budget when natural/organic options are not abundant, Greer Bautz (a mother of 2 from Maryland), who offered tips for getting the most bang for your buck at Whole Foods, and April Paffrath (a mother of 1 from Cambridge), who shared ideas for sourcing local food through the year. I also give a sneak peek into the fantastic show I have planned for next week. Enjoy!

Weekend Halloween Fun

neaq-pumpkin.pngFinally, Halloween is almost here! And if your kids are looking for extra places to wear that costume, consider (in addition to a few previously listed ongoing spooktacular events): the Halloween Party at Ringer Park (Allston), Franklin Park Zoo Howl (Boston), Titus Sparrow Park Pre-Trick-Or-Treat Halloween Party (Boston), and Newton Community Service Center Halloween Fair. Also, on Sunday, kids 11 and under in costume (accompanied by a paying adult) can enjoy free admission to the New England Aquarium and on Boston DUCK Tours departing from the NEAQ. Sweet!

As follow up to last week's Halloween costume coverage, I'll chat fabulous and easy Halloween food and crafts in the first segment. And for the remainder of the show, inspired by this call to action, I'll interview three fantastic guests re: tips and tricks for eating real food on a budget (in one case, a family of seven!) and sourcing local throughout the year. So tune in at 1pm EST; you're also welcome to call in or tweet questions during the live episode!

Happy Halloween Bowl

yummy-earth-organic-lollipops.jpgLast year, I loved all of the suggestions that rolled in when I queried about Halloween candy alternatives on Twitter and Facebook. Particularly since I started doling out Halloween treats as a parent, it's been important to me to hand out items that are: a) natural/organic; and b) an alternative to food, in case of allergies. Definitely check out the Halloween candy alternative post for additional ideas, but today I wanted to share the affordable and chemical free goodies that will grace our Halloween bowl this year. Admittedly, I was surprised to see rather limited Halloween selections at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's this year so I stocked up on three primary treat items and will get the non-food items later this week:

Life.Style Green Tips & Halloween

christine-koh-screenshot.jpgWow, wow, wow. I had such a fun time launching Life.Style with Christine Koh on Thursday! Perhaps as a function of all of those years performing violin recitals and giving lectures, I wasn't nervous at all. There were a few unexpected things to deal with given that the show is live, but it all seemed to come off well! For episode 1, I interviewed Danielle Friedland of Healthy Child Healthy World about easy and inexpensive tips for green living (helpful whether you are just starting to think about making green change or want to amp up your current routine), and also shared a great roundup of ideas for Halloween costumes. I hope you'll check out the segment!

Weekend Halloween Happenings

halloween-witch.jpgIf Laurel could wear a costume every day, she probably would. Barring that, there are plenty of opportunities to get into the Halloween spirit a week in advance. In addition to a few previously listed ongoing spooktacular events, consider these weekend Halloween happenings: Halloween Fest at Prudential Center (Boston), Ipswich River Halloween Happenings, Wachusett Meadow Halloween Night Hike and Hayride (Princeton), Halloween Prowl at Moose Hill Sanctuary (Sharon), Boo at the Zoo (Stoneham), A Great Pumpkin Day! at Gore Place (Waltham), and EcoTarium's Great Pumpkin Fest (Worcester). And of course there's Laurel's gentle yet beloved Spooky Hayride at Wilson Farm.

Life.Style Launch!

life-style-with-christine-koh.jpgMy dad used to tell me that I should be a lawyer, diplomat, or talk show host since, well, I love to talk with people. And as it turns out, tomorrow I'll take a step closer to the talk show host thing. I'm thrilled to announce that starting tomorrow, I'll host a weekly live talk video show (like talk radio, but streaming live on the web...apparently you can also tune in via iPhone or iPad) called Life.Style with Christine Koh via The Pulse Network. My goal for the show is to share and connect with people around living well, stylishly, happily, and practically -- I'll cover topics such as green living, parenting, pregnancy, holidays and celebrations, art and design, crafts, and food. Basically anything and everything!

Memorial Day Fun

faneuil-hall-street-performer.JPGI'm hoping to take it easy this long weekend, save a little household puttering (the floors are sticky and the weeds abound), but here a few leads for Memorial Day fun that are worth considering. If your kid loves tricks as much as Laurel does, head to the Faneuil Hall Street Performer Festival Extravaganza. Boston Central has a running list of Memorial Day parades in Massachusetts (you'll just need to dig up the route if your town is hosting one). And then there's the Memorial Day picnic I'm co-hosting on Monday in Boston. Check out the details and feel free to RSVP at the Facebook event page -- I'd love to see you there! (And don't forget to bring donations for Room to Grow and Women's Lunch Place!)

Rosebud Valentines

rosebud-valentines-1.JPGThough we’re very crafty at home, I love when Laurel comes home with new ideas from her art classes at school. And last week I was blown away by the awesomeness of this rosebud Valentine project. These Valentines are a tad time consuming if you make the hearts as big as Laurel did (about ¾ of a sheet of paper) so she’s just making a few for some special sweethearts. Alternatively, you could make them smaller (perhaps cutting 8.5 x 11” sheets of paper into four equal pieces and cutting hearts from those rectangles). The effect will still be spectacularly heartfelt. Here’s the how-to:

Simplifying Gift Wrapping

solid-wrapping-paper.jpgToday, Heather shares a fabulous idea that simplifies gift wrapping and makes the holidays accessible for pre-readers:

“I love Christmas and all that comes with it: the music, decorating, baking, shopping, and -- my favorite part -- watching the excitement and anticipation of my four children. The one thing I do not love is gift wrapping, possibly because I come from a family where gift wrapping is considered an art form. The busier my life gets, the more stressful I find this task. Though I love the look of artfully wrapped gifts, my practical side always wonders if it is worth spending so much time on gift wrap that will be ripped off in a few seconds.

Minimalist & Mindful Holidays

the-nutcracker.jpgFor the last several years my less is more mantra has never rang truer than during the holidays, and this mantra has proven particularly practical since becoming a parent. My Simplifying the Holidays guest bloggers have shared so many fantastic ideas; now here's what my family and I do during the holiday season to keep “random stuff creep” to a minimum and encourage creativity and mindfulness in giving within our family and community. Best Gingerbread People Ever

gingerbread-men.jpgThere was a lot of holiday cookie talk on Twitter yesterday, which reminded me that I wanted to share a fantastic recipe for gingerbread people (we're equal opportunity bakers around here). Derived from my trustworthy Baking Illustrated, what I love about these cookies is that they aren’t rock hard crunchy -- testing your dental strength and spraying crumbs all over your shirt with each bite. These cookies are a touch crispy around the edges but chewy throughout, and the sweetness level (not overly sweet) is just right. Laurel and I made these cookies for a holiday party last weekend and people went crazy over them.

Here's to the Holidays

holly.JPGToday, parent educator Hetti Wohlgemuth of Alphabet Soup 4 Parents shares tips for bringing back your holiday mojo:

“Many of us have a love/hate relationship with the holidays. For example, I love spending time with my family, playing board games and cards fireside, finding a special gift for each of my girls, attending Christmas Eve services, winter walks, and more. Then there’s the stuff I hate: the excess, the stress, and sometimes my memories of Christmases past. Here are some classic holiday related struggles and how to cope with them.

Simplifying The Holidays: Wicked Easy Makeup

bobbi-brown-concealer.jpgOne of the great things about BlogHer Boston was that it gave me the opportunity to emerge out of my blogging cave and meet fabulous local bloggers in real life. And one of those bloggers was Roxanna of Miguelina. Roxanna is a lovely person; smart, kind, and funny, and mysteriously, she always manages to look perfectly assembled despite tweets that might otherwise suggest she’s unraveling (to her credit, she’s allowed some unraveling…she just delivered her third son in October). Perhaps that’s why she’s so adept at blogging beauty. Asha is funny and smart and clever and I just adore her; I only regret that neither of our scheduled in real life event meet ups this year have worked out. The good news is that Asha is so effective at translating her warmth and smarts online, which is what makes Parent Hacks so great (and gives me my Asha fix in absentia). Indie Artists & Gingerbread Houses

boston-christmas-festival.jpgThough I still can’t stomach the concept of holiday in terms of retail displays in early November, I’m willing to make exceptions for the performing arts and independent artisans. And from November 6 – 8 you can access the wares of 300 fine artists at the Boston Christmas Festival at the Seaport World Trade Center. Also, given my obsession with gingerbread last year (and, admittedly, cake competitions on cable), the gingerbread house competition (of which this Fenway Park replica was a winner) seems particularly intriguing. Tickets are $12 for adults (discount available); kids under 14 are admitted free.

Halloween Candy Alternatives

Easy Last Minute Easter Egg Dyes

easy_easter_egg_dye_1.jpgToday, April shares an easy last minute Easter egg dye how-to:

For a crafty person, I have a desire to do general crafts, but I rarely do any planning ahead to prepare for them. I always worry that if I plan to do something date-related, we'll have a rough week (e.g., meltdowns, colds, etc.) and I'll feel a sort of crafty failure and sadness for my girl as I stuff the unused box of Paas into the back of the closet on Easter Monday...only to not be able to find it again next year when it turns out we do have time and inclination to color eggs. So, yes, I suffer from avoidance of craft disappointment.

All About Eve

eve_winter.jpgLaurel loves the spectacle associated with holidays, and we subsequently try to strike a balance between celebration and reinforcing ideas about material alternatives and diversity during these times. As such, we’ve been enjoying a few “holiday alternative” titles from Positive Spin Press - All Hallows Eve, Christmas Eve, and Winter's Eve - which I’m reviewing today in conjunction with the Parent Bloggers Network.

Bunnylicious

bunnycake.jpgI have this thing about cake, and if you're interested in creating a showstopper for Easter, try this bunny cake (also fabulous for a baby shower or birthday party). The construction actually is very straightforward (plus, think about all the sculpting experience you have via Play-doh).

Magic Salt

magicsalt.gif

Given the size of my immediate family, it was a huge relief when, a few years back, someone finally suggested that we stop the practice of exchanging sibling Christmas gifts. We now only bother with gifts for the little people (i.e., the kids and our petite little mom…), and it cuts the holiday chaos down quite a bit.

That said, I’m a bit of a traditionalist, and I still like the concept and festivity of small homemade holiday gifts of the party favor size. This year Laurel did the heavy lifting by painting up a storm (the results of which were set in small frames), and recently I was reminded of one of my favorite holiday, hostess, or foodie friend gifts when my sister-in-law requested my Magic Salt recipe from a couple of Christmases back. Modified from Sally Schneider’s Tuscan Herb Salt recipe (in A New Way to Cook), I dubbed this salt magical because it truly makes everything taste fantastic. It provides particularly wonderful seasoning for simple sautéed vegetables, or for meats of any kind.

Christmas Treecycling

treecycling.gif

Boston is replete with college students, and as such, whenever we put used furniture on the curb for removal, we often wager bets on how long it will take for items to disappear. I used to live near Tufts University and one day when I was hauling an old rug out on trash night, a couple of students actually snapped up the item before it even hit the ground. I love this mode of recycling, which collectively saves on college student expenses, sanitation crew back strain, and landfills.

Yesterday evening, community recycling appeared to take on a new level when we put out our Christmas tree and it was gone within an hour. There were tons of trees out yesterday but perhaps ours got scooped quickly because it was completely bare and bone dry (i.e., ready to go from curb to fireplace), and we’re thrilled that the tree will fulfill another use.

Boston and Cambridge have formal notices about Christmas tree recycling (trees collected curbside during the first two weeks of January are composted); otherwise, check with your town’s Department of Public Works about tree recycling or yard waste collection dates, or completely strip your tree before you put it out in case firewood recyclers hit your neighborhood.

Don’t Try This At Home

beadedornament.gif

Sometimes Martha’s crafts are not for the faint of heart.

Over a decade ago, shortly after one of my sisters got married, I saw Martha’s feature on beaded ornaments and decided to make a set of six for my sister and her husband to celebrate their first married Christmas together. The ornaments looked so pretty and sparkly in the feature, and I had tons of beads and supplies. All I needed was some Styrofoam balls and a couple of hours, no?

No. Obviously, part of the problem was that my beads were not pre-strung so the stringing process added several hours to the project, but the other major setback was the glue and wrap. I had the right materials and followed the instructions, but the bead strings kept slipping and twisting and popping off; I spent more time cleaning glue off the bead strings and my hands than doing anything else.

Countless hours later, and too late for Christmas, all I had to show for my efforts was one ornament (shown) and a tattered Martha Stewart magazine in the corner. I kept the ornament since it didn’t seem right to give a gift that had so much cranky construction mojo behind it. And while we always have a good laugh at my expense when we unveil the ornament, from now on Laurel likely will be the artistic muscle behind future decorations; we’ve already got the makings for a fleet of fabulous (and easily storable!) glitter stars.

MFA for the Holidays

mfa_holidays.gif

Tomorrow’s weather isn’t predicted to be as deadly cold as today, but if you’re looking to get into the holiday spirit indoors, check out the Museum of Fine Art’s holiday programming (December 9-17). Tomorrow’s schedule alone includes live music and dance, family art-making activities, Christmas films, mini-Nutcracker plays, shopping, and a holiday tea.

Most events are free with museum admission (click here for details). Check your library for discount admissions passes; if you’re feeling ambitious you could even try to catch the Paris fashion exhibit while you’re there.

Starstruck

My recycling efforts have merged with Laurel’s love of painting to create easy and pretty holiday décor: paper glitter stars.

When Laurel paints, we use small paper plates to hold the colors (she can’t be trusted with entire bottles…). She’s a one color-per-plate kind of girl and when we recently used glitter paints, I decided to save the plates since they were so sparkly and pretty. After the paper plates dried, I flattened them under a stack of books. Yesterday, I cut star shapes, punched a hole in the top, and strung the stars up to a curtain rod with curling ribbon (click image to enlarge). Cutting and hanging the stars took all of 10 minutes, and Laurel loves seeing her artwork up, and pointing out all the different colors.

More of Laurel’s paper stars likely will adorn our Christmas tree, saving us from the inevitable disastrous interaction of curious toddler + fragile ornaments.
