For Your Favorite Nonprofit

piggy-bank.jpgLast year we opened a bank account for Laurel -- she's really proud of it. She saves up money to put in her account and is always game for rolling loose household change (we tell her if she's willing to roll it, she can deposit it into her account...she just deposited $21 in loose change this week, actually). And while normally I don't get excited about banking matters, I am really looking forward to ableBanking opening so we can transfer her savings. Normally I would not write about a bank opening, but stick with me -- helping out your favorite nonprofit is involved!

Life is Good

life-is-good.jpgI love when creativity meshes with doing good, and this weekend the Life is good Festival will feature an impressive lineup of musical talent in Canton as a fundraiser to help kids in need. In addition to a steady stream of musical performances (which includes a dedicated kids stage), families can enjoy games, activities, crafts, and food. Meanwhile, how cool is this? The kind folks at Life is good are offering one of you awesome readers a Life is good Festival package*! Here's how to enter to win:

Share a Haircut

hair-cuttery.jpgGrowing up in a large family, salon haircuts were not in the budget. Fortunately, my mom had a steady hand, and it wasn't until I went away to college that I stepped into a salon for the first time, paying for the haircut myself. Subsequently, Hair Cuttery's Share a Haircut program really resonated with me. Until August 15, for every child that gets a haircut at any Hair Cuttery (there are over 750 locations in 16 states), a haircut will be donated to a child in need in the community. If you've been planning on back-to-school haircuts for your kids, I hope you will consider supporting this program.

Join the ONE Moms Movement

one.jpgToday, ten bloggers -- including my incredibly talented friends Jennifer James, Cooper Munroe, Emily McKhann, Lindsay Maines, Karen Walrond, and Jyl Pattee -- will begin their journey to Kenya via ONE, a nonprofit that fights extreme poverty and preventable disease through public awareness and political advocacy campaigns. These bloggers will share reports that will undoubtedly instill us all with gratitude for the small and large things in our lives. I'm honored to be a volunteer partner in the ONE Moms movement, and through this role I'll share here and/or on Twitter or Facebook about what's happening in Kenya.

Say Yes to More Birthdays

more-birthdays.jpgAs many of you know, cancer -- or, rather, the ability to kick cancer to the curb, as my friend Sarah used to say -- has been on my mind. So I wanted to take a moment to encourage you all to contribute to a cool campaign that the American Cancer Society recently launched -- I love this campaign for hinging creativity to raising awareness about the fight against cancer. Through Create More Birthdays, people are encouraged to submit a video singing "Happy Birthday" (nothing fancy required -- just record and load!) and/or original art (photography or graphic, etc.) inspired by the progress being made against cancer.

Walk, Run, Eat Ice Cream for Good

jimmy-fund-scooper-bowl.jpgI love this city. With the good weather comes many opportunities to help others in need. Some of these events (such as the March for Babies and Walk for Hunger) have already passed, but this week you can participate in the following family friendly philanthropic events: June 11 is the Four Seasons Run of Hope (5K run/2K walk) to benefit pediatric cancer care and research at the Mass. General Hospital for Children and MGH Cancer Center. June 12 is NSTAR's Walk for Children's Hospital Boston and the New Balance Heart Break Hill 5K to benefit Franciscan Hospital for Children. And starting tomorrow (through June 9) all you need to do is eat ice cream at the Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl to help raise funds for cancer research and care. So easy, no?

Truly, no gift is too small! Thanks so much in advance for your support, and also to fellow team members Kerrie, Kami of The Fence, Angela of Mommy Bytes, Sonia of My Little Pakora, and Liz of Goddess in Progress for their footsteps and fundraising efforts! B Kind 2 Earth Day

b-kind-2-earth-day.jpgAs I mentioned Sunday, I love Cooper and Emily of TheMotherhood.com, and they've just launched a cool eco inspired digital campaign with the National Wildlife Federation (of which I'm a founding mom) and Nickelodeon. The initiative is simple: "Like" the B Kind 2 Earth Day Facebook page to indicate your promise to do something kind for the earth on Earth Day, then make good on that promise, whether it's going on a hike, planting seeds, walking instead of driving, etc. My promise is to regularly engage in neighborhood cleanup. Strangely enough, without knowing about my intention, this past weekend Jon and Laurel headed out with a trash bag and work gloves to pick up at our local park. Awesomely, the act inspired conversations with neighbors that we hope will translate to a community effort to pick up litter, and I plan on continuing the effort on Earth Day and beyond. So go "like" the B Kind 2 Earth page, and let's show how awesome Massachusetts is by adding to the state participation count!

Come March for Babies!

BM_MarchforBabies_2011.jpgI'm thrilled to partner for a fourth year with the March of Dimes to support the March for Babies on May 7 in Boston. Last year's rain didn't deter the spirit of the team (even the kiddos...and this year I plan on toting my wee one!), and I hope you will join us -- Team Boston Mamas & Friends -- whether by walking, joining the team for fundraising (walking or not), and/or making a donation. Truly, no gift is too small and anyone is welcome to join the team. Thanks so much in advance for your support! Please email me if you have questions.

77kids Do Good Day

77kids-do-good-day.jpgOne of the things that is so sweet about Laurel is that she is so people focused. When she was a toddler, if a friend at day care was crying, she would toddle over and pat them on the back to try to make them feel better. On Sunday she wrote a letter to the Boston Police because she was concerned about people trying to steal the Make Way for Ducklings statues (which I guess makes her duck and people focused). And yesterday, she offered to wash our car just to do something nice for us (she did a great job by the way). It was almost as if Laurel knew that tomorrow, 77 mom bloggers in 11 cities around the country would be inspiring kids to do good. Here's the scoop on what's going down tomorrow:

Banana Splits for a Cause

christine-koh-banana-split.jpgThanks to an invitation from Electrolux (who kindly handled my travel and accommodations), earlier this week I had the pleasure of traveling with Laurel to New York City for an event to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. With the incredibly gracious and down to earth Kelly Ripa as hostess, and Serendipity 3's Stephen Bruce as banana split master, the kids got to go nuts in the kitchen (Laurel left no topping unturned) while the grownups learned about a sweet new virtual campaign.

Having Fun, Doing Good

hebrew-national-card-project.jpgThanks so much to everyone who came out for the Hebrew National Better-Than-A-Picnic Picnic I co-hosted with Audrey, Christy, and Jodi) on Memorial Day! It truly was a perfect day and everyone seemed thrilled to enjoy the gorgeous weather, unlimited hot dogs, refreshments, and activities (note to self: kids and grownups go nuts over a mechanical bull). Also awesome was the easy access to the Artesani Park playground and spray pond; along with lots of other kids, Laurel was thrilled to get in her first splashes of the season.

Boston's Better-Than-A-Picnic Picnic

hebrew-national-picnic.jpgI can hardly believe the end of May is fast approaching, but I'm thrilled to cap the month with a bang and invite you all to a big, awesome party on Memorial Day. I'm honored to co-host (along with the lovely Audrey of Mom Generations, Christy of Quirky Fusion, and Jodi of Mom's Favorite Stuff) one of TheMotherhood's series of Hebrew National Better-Than-A-Picnic Picnics. This series of nine picnics along the East Coast offers a fun means through which families and friends can hang out, enjoy some hot dogs (100% kosher beef with no nasty fillers or artificial flavors by the way), and do a little good. Below are the details on the Boston event. I hope to see you there!

Boston Mamas & Friends Thanks You!

MarchforBabies_150x150.jpgFriends, I was so happy to walk in yesterday's March for Babies (which had an impressive turnout despite the downpour preceding the walk), and am enormously proud of all of the funds raised by Team Boston Mamas & Friends. We raised $7,762 for the March of Dimes, and I am especially grateful to my sister Stephanie (our runaway top fundraiser at $3,915 -- she matched her donations dollar for dollar!), and to Carissa, Angela, and Christina, who all raised $500 or more (I was also thrilled to meet my personal fundraising goal). Amazing efforts all around and we couldn't have done it without the generosity of many people. Thanks to everyone who supported our team!

We'll Rock The Walk For You

MarchforBabies_150x150.jpgFriends, it's the final stretch and I am doing one last ask in this space: will you please support Team Boston Mamas & Friends with a donation to the team or my personal page? I am thrilled that we recently broke the $3,000 fundraising mark and I hope we can keep upping our contribution this week -- truly, no gift is too small! Thanks so much in advance for your support, and I look forward to rocking the walk on May 8th on behalf of all of you.

Have a Heart for Haiti

Boston_Mamas_Haiti.jpgIn the wake of the devastation in Haiti I have been pondering how best to use my voice at Boston Mamas to help. And yesterday I thought of a way to engage you wonderful readers while also supporting talented local mamapreneurs. I'm currently assembling a group of Boston Mamas mamapreneur network members to donate a percentage of sales collected from February 1 - 15 to the Boston Mamas Have a Heart for Haiti campaign. Donations will go to UNICEF, which is absorbing administrative costs so that 100% of every dollar donated goes directly to relief efforts for children in Haiti (thanks for that lead, Cool Mom Picks!). If you are a local mamapreneur and want to participate, simply join the network and I'll follow up with details. I will be launching the campaign next week, so act soon!

Simplifying The Holidays: Giving

power-of-giving.jpgI first met the lovely Isabel Kallman of Alpha Mom at the inaugural Pampers mom blogger meeting in Cincinnati and have since adored being in her company at every turn (most notably while interviewing Salma Hayek, talking all things blogging, and while wearing paper bags on our heads). Isabel is a smart entrepreneur, a kind friend, and always is thinking towards personal improvement, community building, and outreach to those in need. Fittingly, for the fourth in my Simplifying the Holidays guest blog series – Isabel shares easy ideas for reconnecting with the spirit of the holidays through giving.

Simplifying the Holidays: Everyday Philanthropy

everyday-philanthropist.jpgJennifer James is one of the first bloggers I met in real life, through the inaugural Disney mom bloggers mixer. She since has become a dear friend and a trusted professional confidante; someone I admire for her kindness, good karma, smart insights, and astute perspective as a long time blogger (among her many projects, she’s best known as the founder of the Mom Bloggers Club). The second in my Simplifying the Holidays guest blog series, today Jennifer shares a collection of wonderful ideas for everyday philanthropy where you can make a difference from the comfort of your home.

Big Boston Warm-up

big-boston-warmup.jpgIt’s the season of giving and I hope you will participate in the Big Boston Warm-up. This coat campaign is hinged to an art installation at Boylston Plaza at Prudential Center. The installation comprises 768 figures, each representing 10 of Boston’s homeless men, women, and children. Simply donate a gently used coat to a local Lands’ Ends at Sears (you’ll receive 20% off a new Lands’ End coat) and a red heart will be added to each installation figure for every 10 coats donated. Also, as part of the campaign, tomorrow, November 7 (10:30am-12pm; 1-2:30pm), at the Burlington Mall Lands’ End/Sears, families can enjoy a meet and greet, reading, and book signing with Carol McCloud, author of Have You Filled a Bucket Today: A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids. The concept of “bucket filling” is all about encouraging positive acts, such as helping those less fortunate.

Memory Walk

alzheimers-memory-walk.jpgToday, Jennifer shares a cause that is near and dear to her heart:

“In 1992 I lost my grandfather to Alzheimer's disease. Since that time I've volunteered for the MA/NH Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association and walked in the Memory Walk to help raise money and awareness for this disease. It's a great event for a great cause (and a lovely stroller-friendly walk around the Charles River). Walks are being coordinated across the country; locally, walks will take place in Cambridge, Gardner, Walpole, and Westfield this weekend, and in Andover and Plymouth the following weekend.

Cupcakes for a Cause

cupcakes-for-a-cause.jpgReally, how can you go wrong buying a cupcake (or two or three) that has philanthropic rewards? This week is Cupcakes for a Cause Week, during which bakeries across the country are selling specially decorated cupcakes and donating partial proceeds to CancerCare for Kids, a free, professional support service for children affected by cancer. The cupcake drive runs until September 27 and is national; in Massachusetts, participating bakeries include Kickass Cupcakes (Somerville), Lyndell’s Bakery (Somerville & Boston), and Nantucket Bake Shop (Nantucket).

Service & Remembrance

911day.jpgSeptember 11th is a source of pain for so many, but now the day can also represent something really positive. Following efforts by MyGoodDeed – a coalition supported by 9/11 families – President Obama named 9/11 a National Day of Service and Remembrance; a day to honor 9/11 victims and pay tribute to those who bravely responded to the attacks, through service. At 911dayofservice.org users can find volunteer opportunities and post good deeds. And as you plan good deeds for 9/11 and beyond, check out VolunteerSpot. This free tool helps volunteers coordinate groups, schedules, signups, and reminders for everything from school activities to charitable drives, service projects, and mentoring sessions.

Grainy Good Deeds

bread-art-boston-mamas.jpgWhether or not you’re minding your carbs, here’s a terrific way to engage in some guilt-free, grain-related goodness. The Bread Art Project, Grain Foods Foundation, and Feeding America have partnered to help fight hunger in a remarkably creative, easy, and free manner. Simply create a piece of digital bread art by the end of June (uploading and “toasting” an image – such as one of my cute Boston Mamas buttons - literally takes seconds, or you’re welcome to play with their fancier freehand tools), and for each slice artistically rendered, Grain Foods Foundation donates $1 to Feeding America. Amazingly, a $1 donation equals 7 meals, 10 pounds of food, or 4 bags of groceries. Good deeds just don’t get easier or more inspired than that.

Beneficial Scoops

scooper-bowl.jpgThough I’m a proponent of moderation over an “all you can eat” mentality, it’s tough to knock enjoying frozen treats for a good cause. Running June 9 – 11 (12 – 8pm daily) at Boston City Hall Plaza, the Jimmy Fund Scooper Bowl is in its 27th year of raising money to support cancer treatment and research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Admission – which allows you to sample all the ice cream you are able - is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 3-9, and free for kids under 3. Particularly cool: in addition to traditional ice cream and frozen yogurt, this year’s offerings include sorbet and gelato (oh how I love gelato), and Kosher ice cream will be available.

Gifts That Keep on Giving

redenvelope-marchofdimes.jpgRegular readers know that I’m an avid supporter of the March of Dimes and I thus want to share two Mother's Day retail partnerships that benefit the MoD. In the vein of traditionally pretty and appreciated gifts, Red Envelope is donating 10% of the proceeds of each mother’s love necklace sold to the MoD, and ProFlowers is donating $10 on every Mother’s Day flower order to the MoD. Alternatively, if you’re not interesting in gifting “stuff” this year, please consider making a gift in honor of mom to the Boston March for Babies. I would be ever so grateful for your support!

Also, I have a Red Envelope mother’s love necklace that I would like to gift to a reader. To enter to win the necklace:

March of Dimes Mom

Boston_March_for_Babies.jpgFolks, I don’t like to beg, but in this special case, I will. PLEASE consider making a donation - $5, $10, more if you have the means - to Team Boston Mamas for the March for Babies in Boston on May 9. Thank you!

I also wanted to share that I’m continuing my commitment to the March of Dimes beyond the walk. I recently signed on as a March of Dimes Mom and will donate one post per month to educating women about pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and newborn topics. Please feel free to email me if there are any specific topics you’d like me to cover.

Boston_March_for_Babies.jpgI’m thrilled that Boston Mamas is partnering again with the March of Dimes to promote and participate in the March for Babies, this year taking place in Boston on May 9. I know these are tough economic times, but I would be so very grateful if you would consider making a donation to, or joining the fundraising for, Team Boston Mamas. No gift is too small for this wonderful cause and anyone is welcome to join the team. Thanks so much in advance for your support! Please email me if you have questions.

Caring & Curing

generationcures.jpgTeaching Laurel empathy has always been very important to us, not only to help curb age appropriate but hurtful behaviors such as biting and hitting, but also simply to help her learn how to be a good friend and family member. And while she has embraced these lessons since toddlerhood (in daycare she always was quick to give a hug or rub a friend’s back if they were sad), we know we’ll need to revisit these themes through her young life. And for parents of tweens, here’s an interesting way to help teach compassion to kids: Generation Cures.

March for Babies

BM_MarchforBabies_130.jpgI’m thrilled to announce that Boston Mamas is partnering with the March of Dimes to promote and participate in the March for Babies. Whether personally or through loved ones, no doubt many mamas have experienced both the joy of healthy birth and the heartache associated with premature birth. Please consider channeling both the joy and heartache into an effort to help babies get a healthy start in life.

Please join Team Boston Mamas for this, our first outreach event, be it via a donation or by walking with us on April 27.

Horizons for Homeless Children

logo_horizons.gif

Generally it seems a reasonable rule of thumb to not have reason to cry before 9am, but this morning there was no helping the tears at the Horizons for Homeless Children Annual Women’s Breakfast in Boston. At this remarkable event, 1,000 women gathered to learn about homelessness in Massachusetts. We heard compelling, moving stories from women who – with children in tow – battled back from homelessness to become thriving members of their communities, and learned about the impact of giving back from a woman who volunteers as a Playspace Activity Leader.

Horizons’ approach to battling the numbers surrounding homeless children (10,000 children in Massachusetts per year; 500,000 nationally) is impressive in its’ multi-dimensional structure. Not only does Horizons’ give children a safe and happy space in which they can learn, play, and develop (through community children’s centers in Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, and Roxbury that offer full-time care so parents can work, and through building of playspaces in local shelters across Massachusetts), but they also provide much-needed support to parents, whether it be informational – by helping parents learn how to be involved in the growth and development of their children, as well as how to access education and job training resources – or emotional, through listening ears and open hearts free of judgment.

It’s difficult for me to resist facts and figures; I felt encouraged by the idea that modest gifts of $50 or $100 could go so far ($50 = art supplies for a classroom for one month; $100 = 17 lbs of Legos, 37 lbs of Play-Doh, or 30 lbs of puzzles for shelter playspace programs). In addition to donations, there are many other ways to help, such as donating goods or services, becoming a Playspace Activity Leader (2 hour per week commitment), or event hosting.

Cradles to Crayons

logo_cradlestocrayons.gif

The next time you are preparing to purge baby/kid stuff from your home, consider donating to Cradles to Crayons, an organization committed to providing poor and homeless children from Massachusetts (infancy to age 12) with everyday clothes, gear, toys, and school supplies.

Last year alone, Cradles to Crayons provided 25,000 local children with high-quality goods to keep them warm, safe at home, and ready to learn at school. Find out about the different ways you can help their cause, and the types of items accepted for donation.
