6 Winter Warmth & Safety Tips for Baby

penguin-hat.jpgToday, Carole Arsenault of Boston Baby Nurses shares six tips for keeping baby warm and safe during winter:

When the temperatures drop during winter, it's natural for parents to want to make baby as cozy and warm as can be. And of course layering up for time spent outdoors is important. But it's equally important to be aware of times when overheating and overdressing has the potential to cause harm. Here are six tips to help keep your baby safe and warm through winter:

Travel Made Easy with journeyBee

journeybee.jpgI love traveling. Except for the part about the schlepping of the stuff, especially the bulky, heavy stuff such as travel cribs. So I was intrigued to learn that there was a new (parent-designed) travel crib in town, and then find out that journeyBee delivers what it promises. Weighing in under 12 pounds (about half the weight of other play yards), and decidedly easier to schlep (the crib folds down flat and comes with a travel bag), it takes about 2 seconds to pop open and maybe 5-20 seconds (depending on how good you are at following left/right instructions) to fold down. I initially wondered about the coziness of a crib that sits directly on the floor (compared to footed travel cribs), but journeyBee has a nice, thick mattress pad and fleece cover sheet.

The Good Kind of Drool

drool-cupcake.jpgMy friends Sheri and Eli Gurock of Magic Beans appear to not sleep. Which, while probably a little inconvenient for them, results in impressive things like the Drool Baby Expo happening next week (May 15) at the Cyclorama in Boston. Geared towards anyone who wishes to check out stylish, functional baby gear up close and personal, attendees will also have the chance to win cool prizes, enjoy refreshments, and walk away with a killer gift bag. And how cool is this? My peeps at Magic Beans are offering up a pair of VIP tickets to one of you awesome readers. Here's how to enter to win:

All-Access Sleep Sack

gunapod.jpgI can't believe Violet turns one next month. I also can't believe she ever used to lie immobile on her back. During the night, she migrates around her crib a lot, which has made blanket coverage impossible and (I think) contributed to interrupted sleep. Now, sleep sacks as a temperature solution are not a new concept to me, but I hadn't bothered with them for Violet since with Laurel, the zip-front openings weren't the most convenient for middle of the night diaper changes.

First Teeth Basics

baby-teeth.jpgToday, Carole Arsenault of Boston Baby Nurses shares baby first teeth basics:

When can you expect your baby's first teeth? Most babies get their first teeth between the ages of three and seven months old, although it is possible to get them earlier or even later than seven months. Teeth actually start to develop before birth as tooth buds form in the gums, but your baby's teeth will start to break through one at a time throughout the first two years, typically in this order: bottom two middle, top two middle, side, and then back teeth. The last teeth to appear will be your baby's molars, which come in around two years old. By three your baby will have a full set of 20 baby teeth.

Just Say No to Burnt Veggies

beaba-babycook.jpgWhen Violet recently turned 6 months we embarked on the solid food journey. And it's been 10 days notable for cute firsts (first cereal! first yams! first pears!), not the least of which was testing the Béaba Babycook. While I tend to forego lots of baby gear as unnecessary, if you are interested in -- or intimidated by the prospect of -- making baby food, you must consider acquiring this amazing tool. Read on for my thoughts about the Babycook, as well as to learn how to win a Béaba Babycook and multiportion food storage unit!

14 Posts For Breastfeeding Moms

world-breastfeeding-week.jpgI know many, many moms who have experienced breastfeeding woes, so I feel gratitude every day that nursing has worked out so easily and so well for me and my girls. In honor of tomorrow's kick off of World Breastfeeding Week, I wanted to share a roundup of 14 helpful posts (including one that's actually handy post-nursing) for breastfeeding moms; most are from my feeding and nursing archive, of which there are many more articles if you wish to peruse! Whether you've nursed your baby for one day or one or more years, you've given your baby a great gift. Go mamas!

Dear Boston Mamas: Nursing & Pumping

medela-pump.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from Jen via Facebook:

Hi Christine, I just had my third little boy. He is a joy. Although I successfully breast-fed my first two sons, I was not successful in getting my second son to use a bottle (which led me to be resentful towards the end), so I have taken your advice and started my baby on a bottle at three weeks. I was wondering about how often you pump and provide bottles to keep up your supply and still be able to nurse? I've forgotten how I managed with my first son.

Keeping Track with Itzbeen

itzbeen.jpegMy friend Cynthia is, like me, minimalist when it comes to baby stuff, so I took the following gear recommendation to heart: "I had a thought during my 3 am feeding that you might be interested in...I've found the itzbeen to be the most helpful item of baby gear so far this go-round. A single-mom friend turned me on to it, because she knew she would be insanely sleep-deprived and not able to be charting even the most basic info. It really helps me keep track of feeding often by day and it's encouraging to know she's going 2-3 hours at a time at night. It also helps me remember which boob I'm on." Go forth and collect data mamas.

Simple Wishes Fulfilled

simple-wishes-bustier.jpgLet's face it: pumping probably doesn't top any mom's Fun Stuff To Do Today list. And pumping used to be doubly un-fun when Laurel was a baby because our efforts with the bottle were so unsuccessful (our fault -- we started introducing the bottle way too late) and I had to sit there and watch the minutes tick by (no doubt thinking about how the milk would probably go to waste) while I held the gear in place. Well, no more. Thanks to the Simple Wishes bustier (which I picked up at Isis Parenting on the recommendation of my friends Cindy and Liz), pumping has turned from single focused chore to multitasking opportunity.

A Drool-icious Baby Expo

drool.jpgI've written before that Eli and Sheri Gurock of Magic Beans are some of the busiest (and kindest) people around, so I was impressed to hear about an amazing expo they're bringing to Boston on May 31. Debuting at the Seaport Hotel, the Drool Baby Expo offers expecting, new, and seasoned parents (or anyone else who digs cool baby stuff) the opportunity to check out the latest in baby gear, partake in refreshments and complimentary spa services, engage in demos, workshops, and consultations, and enjoy giveaways, freebies, and discounts (plus, all attendees will receive an awesome gift bag). And how cool is this? The kind folks at Magic Beans are offering one of you awesome readers a pair of VIP tickets to Drool*! Below is how to enter to win, plus additional insider info on why you want to buy a ticket even if you don't win. I'll be drooling over things for Violet at Drool, so please come say hello if you see me!

Dear Boston Mamas: Moving to Boston

boston-skyline.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from Denae via e-mail. Denae had a series of questions regarding her relocation to Boston, which I have broken out into categories. In addition to my responses, Kate -- a Boston urban planner and car-free/public transport enthusiast -- kindly weighed in (thanks, Kate!):

Dear Boston Mamas: We are looking at relocating to Boston with a 3 month old. Coming from the South and big spaces, I am terrified by two things: an infant on the bus system and an infant in snowy weather. We will be leaving our car behind and I have no experience with snow...With the hubs getting his Master's we would be going to a single income and it looks like we could save a lot of money by not bringing our Honda Civic...if we can make it work. Thanks for your help!

Traveling With Amelia

ellington-amelia-tote.jpgPregnancy hasn't slowed me down at all, but when I travel, I do now feel more acutely the burden of toting luggage along with my front-riding precious cargo. So I was thrilled to learn about Ellington's Amelia in-flight tote, which I put to the test last week during our Thanksgiving travels. Hooray for Oshi

oshi-mat.jpgAs someone who practices yoga regularly at home, I am -- unfortunately -- frequently reminded of my negligence in the vacuuming and sweeping department. And realistically, I just don't imagine improving on either of these chores once our baby arrives in March. So that's why I dig Oshi Mat. Currently available in four super cute styles, these recyclable foam mats are cushy, eco-friendly, bacteria resistant, easy to clean, and simple to tote (lightweight tote bag included). Instead of fretting about the fuzzies on one's rug, the inevitable and unidentifiable floor bits at mommy and me classes, and/or the pet hair on the rug at the in-laws, you can simply enjoy rocking tummy time with your baby. And who knows -- maybe these chic mats will even lift your spirits during those frequent diaper changes; I'm certainly going to give it a try.

Birthday Giveaway: hushamok

hushamok-hammock.jpgNow that I have recovered from my pregnancy shock, I have, admittedly, been viewing baby gear with a decidedly more interested eye (we donated many of our wee things because I was convinced we were done). And I was intrigued when hushamok came onto my radar. Beautifully modern in design, free of noisy (and unnecessary, in my opinion) bells and whistles, and constructed of organic materials, hushamok's beautiful hammocks and seats have a wonderfully natural vibe -- both in styling and also because they take advantage of natural movement as a soothing mechanism. I recently saw the hushamok dream at my friend Braden's house, and not only did I want to crawl in for a cozy snooze, but her baby was, in fact, sleeping happily and peacefully in it. And as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, hushamok generously is gifting one lucky winner with their Organic Cotton Hammock ($195 value). Simply check out the rules below and leave a comment on this giveaway by Monday, August 16, to enter to win.

Birthday Giveaway: Safety 1st

safety-1st-aerolite.jpgStrollers and car seats are the bread and butter of gear for parents, and finding a system that is easy to use and offers features that benefit both baby and grownups -- while being in an affordable ballpark -- can be challenging. I subsequently was impressed to learn about Safety 1st's AeroLite LX Deluxe Travel System. Stylishly designed and competitively priced, the stroller features important basics such as a 5-point harness, multi-position recline, and one-hand folding, and handy features such as an all-weather canopy, storage basket, snack tray, and cup holders. The infant car seat, which features Safety 1st's special side impact technology, attaches quickly, making those repeated transitions from car to stroller and back a breeze. And as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Safety 1st generously is gifting one lucky winner with the AeroLite LX Deluxe Travel System ($279.99 value). Birthday Giveaway: BornFree

born-free.jpgOh, bottles. How I wish I had introduced you earlier to Laurel (we didn't get around to it until she was three months old, by which point she was set in her nursing ways and refused other feeding options). And thus, to new mom friends, I recommend that bottles are introduced once baby has the hang of breastfeeding, in order to allow mom the occasional walk or haircut without panicking about baby's hunger level. Not surprisingly, I always recommend BPA-free plastic or glass bottles (silicone sleeves enable easy usage with glass), and you can pick up these and other eco-friendly baby goods such as sippy and straw cups, pacifiers, and teethers at BornFree. And as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, BornFree generously is gifting two lucky winners each with a glass bottle gift set ($44.99 value). Simply check out the rules below and leave a comment on this giveaway by Tuesday, July 27, to enter to win.

Chic Papoose

chic-papoose.jpgI love gifting my new (or not so new) mom friends with slings. They're one of those products that might not make traditional registry lists, but they proved essential in calming Laurel, and also allowed me to have my hands free and get a few things done while Laurel snoozed or cuddled happily against me. And when you're next in the market for a sling, consider Chic Papoose. In addition to being great for bonding and assuaging cranky babies, these slings are easy to use, compact, well constructed, comfortable, and practical (washable!). Also awesome? They're made of gorgeous fabrics -- ranging from classic to edgy to exotic -- on one side and a coordinating solid on the reverse so you can switch up your look depending on your mood or outfit. I especially love the Johanna sling -- the Asian-inspired pattern is funky, the colorways are gorgeous, and the combination of said pattern and colorways hides inevitable stains.

Now, want to win a sling from Chic Papoose? Here's how:

Babywearing With Baby K'Tan

baby-ktan.pngToday, Jules shares her favorite babywearing solution: Baby K'Tan. Read on for Jules's review, as well as to learn how to win a Baby K'Tan sling:

I've tried a million and one different slings (only a slight exaggeration), but when the opportunity arose to test a Baby K'Tan sling, I was intrigued. The double sling structure is different than slings I have used in the past, and the sling looked like it could meet my kids' steadfast preference to be held vertically (and eat vertically, as is the case for my baby girl). In the simplest terms, I will say that I love this sling. But let me tell you more.

Chic & Sleek Childproofing

rhoost-cabinet-lock.jpgIf you are -- like me -- a total commitment-phobe when it comes to childproofing (I opted to drive myself crazy being hypervigilant rather than installing anything with screws or adhesive), I've got a chic and sleek answer for you: Rhoost. This locally based company offers cabinet locks and table corner protectors that are blissfully minimal in design, cool in color palette, and easy to install. When I first laid my eyes on these products I immediately thought: a) I can't believe clunky and ugly childproofing has been the norm; b) I'm psyched someone local thought of this; and c) I hope they expand their product line because this rocks. Effective in preventing injuries, competitively priced, stylish, unobtrusive, screw and adhesive free, and made of material that's BPA-free, lead-free, phthalate-free, and 100% recyclable? Bring on the toddlers.

Want to be one of two winners to receive Rhoost products? Here's how:

Have Pockets, Will Travel

pish-posh-quick-zip.jpgOne beautiful thing about graduating from early parenting -- during which time I toted way too much stuff in an enormous diaper bag -- was the return of handbag use. Only problem? Laurel and my stuff got jumbled together and swapping handbag contents always was a nuisance, with some critical item (usually hand sanitizer) forgotten. Solution? The PishPosh Quick Zip. These prettily patterned, washable organizers feature seven outer pockets and five inner pockets (two elasticized + one extra zippered pocket). Simply load up the pockets, zip the pouch, drop it in your handbag du jour (this obviously won’t fly for little purses, but will fit larger handbags and totes), and go. The Quick Zip will be a lifesaver whether it’s filled with baby’s diapering essentials, a mix of preschooler snacks + your personal effects, or -- once your kid is grown and toting his/her own stuff -- just your stuff; those pretty pockets will fit cell, camera, keys, cosmetics, snacks, and a fabulous novel just fine.

Stoked About STOKKE

stokke-tripp-trapp.jpgWhen first tasked to buy baby gear, it can be challenging to navigate the options; in particular the tradeoff between investing in more expensive long term solutions vs. inexpensive short term solutions. I tend to gravitate towards the former, and am particularly drawn to items (e.g., our convertible crib) that can convert and accommodate kids as they grow. Birthday Giveaway: Safety 1st

safety-1st-airprotect.jpgSometimes when I buckle Laurel into her booster seat I stand amazed that my six siblings and I made it out of childhood (i.e., the pre-car seat regulation era) unscathed. And the technology and styling continues to evolve in cool ways, such as with Safety 1st’s new Air Protect car seat. These stylish seats offer conveniences such as easy harness adjustment, a one-click LATCH system, and an adjustable headrest, in addition to innovative side impact technology that shields the head and reduces side impact forces in the event of an accident. Not only did I treasure the ease and coziness of slinging Laurel, but our limitless loops around the block (it was the only sure-fire way to get her to settle) proved beneficial for both my body and soul. And the gorgeous slings by locally owned Sakura Bloom only serve to enhance my longing. Birthday Giveaway: Maisey Mae

Offered in personalized or standard designs, Maisey Mae’s gift sets are a particularly cute choice for shower gifts, and for our 3rd birthday party, Maisey Mae is gifting two lucky winners, one with their Larry the Lobster ($40 value) and one with their Girl Set 3 ($46 value) gift set. my-first-shades.jpgToday, Kate recommends MFS Eyewear’s My First Shades for kiddie sunglasses. Read on for Kate’s review, as well as to learn how to be one of three winners to receive a pair of MFS shades!

“Last summer, my daughter - then 2 years old - would reject hats and sunglasses with an impatient gesture, leaving me to fret about sunburn and sunstroke and retinal damage and every other possible sun-related ill that could befall my very fair-skinned family. This year, with summer slowly beginning to show itself, she seems more open to the idea of covering up from the rays. So, I was happy to discover MFS Eyewear, which makes sunglasses for babies and kids (up to 12 years old) that not only look fun and can withstand rough treatment, but also protect from UV radiation.

Childproofing Necessities

kidco-magnet-lock.jpgToday, Heather recommends childproofing products that have kept her triplet tots out of trouble:

“Will, Adie, and Theo turned two in January and while I wouldn’t say that we are in the throes of the terrible twos, I will say that they have given the word busy a whole new meaning. We have found the need to take extra precautions in safeguarding our home. Working together as a team, my three tots often can outdo the efforts of a single child, scaling greater heights, exploring more remote cabinets, and outdoing restraints with greater efficiency! My husband and I joke that we are living in lockdown mode. There are many products available to childproof your home; here are some tried and true recommendations that have worked for us:

Babywearing With Hotslings

hotslings.jpgToday, Evadne shares a review of the Hotslings reversible baby sling. Read on for her review, as well as to learn how to win a Hotsling of your own!

“I was expecting my third child when the opportunity to try out a Hotslings baby sling arose. I was curious about this particular sling since a friend had raved to me about hers, but I had my doubts. I had tried a pouch-style sling when my first and second children were newborns, and never quite got the hang of it. Perhaps I simply lacked confidence, but I also worried about whether a sling could offer a fragile newborn enough neck support or even breathing room.

And unlike bulky or stiff packs, I love how flexible and soft Dabbawalla bags are; they manage to be structurally simple while still incorporating handy extras, such as extra inner and outer pockets on the lunch bags, and adjustable straps and inner pockets on the backpacks.

Cuddle, Stow, & Go

cucuyo.jpgLet’s face it, blankets offer nothing but love. They’re wonderful to snuggle under, and if you share my obsession for textiles, they can be beautiful, creatively crafted, and even tell a story. And if you’re looking for a pretty and practical blanket for a little one, check out Cucuyo’s Honu Travel Blanket. These double-sided blankets are constructed of patterned flannel on one side, solid curly fleece on the reverse, and a chic contrast trim. Especially handy is the clever hidden pouch that’s built in between the layers. When baby’s done cuddling, simply tuck the blanket into itself to stow it inside the water resistant zippered pouch and you're ready for compact (and clean) travel.

Swaddle In Style

swaddledesigns.jpgWhenever I see Laurel’s stack of bland, misshapen, undersized receiving blankets, I wonder how we survived her swaddling months. It’s no wonder those busy feet kept busting out of her burrito, and I certainly would have enjoyed prettier patterns. Luckily, for moms looking to swaddle in style there’s SwaddleDesigns. Created by an RN, SwaddleDesigns’ Ultimate Receiving Blanket is generously sized, cuddly soft, and available in chic patterns and organic options. And for those burrito-free periods of burping, snuggling, and play, you also can opt for coordinating burpies and lovies.

This raingear effectively shields little ones from the elements, while incorporating super comfy details, such as cushy padded boot insoles and a cozy terry cotton lining in the coat. Heated Relief

happitummi.gif

Growing up, our multigenerational household was replete with seemingly odd remedies; among them, a Korean herb-filled warming device that my grandmother placed squarely over my belly button when I had a tummy ache. To this day I have no idea what that gadget was called, but today there’s a similar remedy in Happi Tummi, which provides relief for babies with colic and gas. Just microwave the herbal pouch to activate the healing properties of the lavender, chamomile, lemongrass, peppermint, spearmint, wheat, and flax seed, slide the pouch into the snuggly, washable waistband, and secure around baby’s waist. We love that this remedy is natural, external (no sleep deprived panic over medication dosage), and dually useful as aromatherapy for the parents.

Double Duty Blankies

gaga.gif

Baby blankets see a lot of action so it’s critical that they’re cute, cuddly, and up to many, many washings. Fitting all of these criteria are Ga-Ga Baby Boutique’s ready-for-double-duty blankets. Constructed of cotton denim (front) and contrasting fleece (reverse and dinosaur, flower, butterfly, airplane appliqué designs), these blankets are ready to withstand plenty of cuddle and play. The fleece side keeps baby tucked cozily, while the top side makes for a great tummy time surface; the appliqués provide intrigue and the denim fabric will hold up well in the face of baby games and spit up.

Sling With a Twist

puj.gif

It’s amazing how far pretty fabrics can carry you, and PUJ slings make toting baby a breeze while dressing up your spit-up-absorbent-mom-outfit. Reader Amanda wrote in about PUJ, saying, “[The sling] has a great look and is surprisingly comfortable. It takes practice to get it on fast but I really like it because it is like having a third arm. My baby is close to me and I still have two hands free.”

We tested PUJ slings and love the compact simplicity. Foldable to the size of a clutch wallet, these slings come in a variety of pretty fabric pairings and work for the (stable-necked) 3 month+ crowd. Just slip the sling over your and baby’s head (and one of your arms), secure under baby’s bottom, and twist the fabric over the anchor shoulder for a cuddly fit.

Want to win a PUJ Heather sling? Here’s how:

Strollers for Multiples

mountainbuggy.gif

Need a stroller for multiples? Heather has done your research for you!

"Shopping for a stroller when I was pregnant with my first child was fun. There were so many options in a variety of colors and styles. Purchasing a stroller for our triplets was a completely different experience. The very first challenge we faced was that triplet strollers are not sold in most stores. They must be ordered online; touching, feeling, and testing were not an option. I soon found that there is no such thing as a 'chic' triple stroller and focused on finding one that was safe, easy to push, comfortable, easily collapsible, and fit in the back of our minivan and through standard doors. After much research, I acquiesced that no such triple stroller exists and now find myself the proud owner of 3 triple strollers.

Slingin’ Costumes

halloweenpeacock.gif

Here's a fab Halloween lead from Tracy:

“For those with 'babes in arms' this Halloween, check out the sling costume ideas from Mammas Milk. I especially love the peacock, since feathers are so au courant in fashion and design. Most suggested costume accoutrements are available at local craft shops. If you don't have the shown sling color for a particular costume, I think it would be easy enough to drape another piece of fabric in the desired color. Also, the site shows older toddler models, but this concept would work for younger babies too. Think snoozing baby with green cap on and green felt circles stuck on the outside of the sling for the classic pea in a pod costume!

Baby Wearing With Beco

beco.gif

Laurel and I loved baby wearing, but we stalled out once she outgrew little pouches, bigger slings, and the Bjorn. We bought a baby backpack, but Laurel was heavy and I just couldn’t get the pack to sit comfortably and distribute the weight properly. If only I had known about Beco at the time.

Designed by sailor, rock climber, and baby wearer Gabby Caperon, Beco baby carriers are compact, ergonomically designed, washable, fabulously stylish, handmade in a fair trade facility, and workable in 5 carry positions (cradle, front, hip seat, hip carry, back). We absolutely love this carrier, and one of our mamas shares her extensive Beco experience today:

Lovely Loveys

gigi.gif

Every now and then I have one of those days where I wish I had a lovey to curl up with and take comfort in. And I’m thinking I might be able to get away with it with the stylish, possibly-could-be-mistaken-for-a-grown-up-rolled-up-scarf Gigi Blanki.

Indeed a product for kiddies, the Gigi Blanki is a handmade, luxurious sensory soother; choose your favorite solid or patterned silk fabric for one side of the blanki, and a contrasting, super soft, solid nubby fabric for the reverse (our favorite pairing, not shown here, is the Limited Edition Disco Dots + Light Blue). These blankis are a perfectly cozy size for little hands, but are small enough to stow easily in a diaper bag or day care cubby. The same fabric palettes also are available to create posh burp cloths and tooth fairy cases.

Perfectly Packed

birthabag.gif

Despite being an excessively organized person who had plenty of time to pack (I went to 42 weeks), my hospital bag was embarrassingly ill stocked. Not only did I fail to pack cute, spirit-bolstering transition clothes for the leaving-the-hospital photos (I still cringe about the fact that I left the hospital in the same maternity track pants I arrived in…), but I forgot to pack other important toiletry basics and much needed self-care/relaxation products. Part of this oversight was due to general cluelessness; part due to the fact that I was busy over-packing Laurel’s bag with an excess of coming home outfits and other unnecessary gear.

OK, I’ll admit it. I used to be one of those parents who raised a discreet eyebrow when I saw little kids ingesting sugary treats in liquid or solid form. Bargains for Babies

kidsurplus.gif

If physically sifting through discount racks tuckers you out, try this online shopping suggestion from Kate:

“Anyone who regularly shops for baby and kid items knows how expensive it can be to do so. KidSurplus.com offers a great selection of toys, clothes, shoes, feeding items, art supplies, and other gear, all at amazingly low prices. The website is a little low-tech, and it can take a long time to look through all of the available items, but the prices are great, the brands are well known (although sometimes disguised behind cute false names), and the customer service is top-notch. This site was particularly handy back during the holidays, when I wasn't in the mood to face the stores but still wanted a good range of options for the range of babies and little people in my life. Shipping is always $7.95, no matter how much you order, and my items arrived quickly and without trouble.”

And Babyfaces shows how the primping and preening starts early in their photo of the week.

Potty Peace of Mind

foldingpotty.gif

With a potty-trained peanut on my hands, public restrooms are both a blessing and a curse. I’m grateful for their existence but freaked by the potential germ factor. Not to mention that our current system – I lay a (wishfully hygienic) layer of tissue on the seat, squat in front of Laurel so she can plant her feet on my thighs, and wrap my arms around her waist so she doesn’t fall into the hole – is utterly uncomfortable.

None of these issues seem to bother Laurel, but in anticipation of our travel this past weekend (i.e., exponential increase in the need to use public restrooms), I ordered One Step Ahead’s Folding Potty Seat and it was a huge success. This seat is remarkably compact folded, and unfolds to provide a sturdy, secure potty seat. The seat also has handles so your kid can hold onto those instead of the toilet itself. This travel potty, which provided me with sanitary peace of mind and Laurel with a comfortable place to go potty, is a steal at $12.95.

Fill in the Blankie

fillinblankie.gif

Blankies are a workhorse in the baby gear collection; they live in the crib, travel on adventures near and far, and can provide comfort like nothing else.

And the “ultra-personalization” offered by Fill in the Blankie ensures comfort in the now, and a keepsake for the future. Choose from a range of 100% cotton styles and colors to fit a range of budgets (as data hounds, we love that they offer Cuddle Factor and Quality ratings on a 10 point scale). The ability to specify up to 200 characters of text (50 per side, in your choice of font and thread color) allows you to include details well beyond date of birth. Extra options include wrapping your blankie around a plush pig (shown) and adding an embroidered illustration.

Fill in the Blankie also offers a companion site, Pig in a Blankie, where you can order one of five plush pals wrapped around a non-personalized blanket of your choice.

Hope In A Bag

babydish.gif

It’s the perfect pairing in a way; a mom who couldn’t possibly have prepared for what lay ahead and a mom on a mission to help parents be prepared on a daily basis. The former is Jordana Holovach, a mom who, in the face of her son Jacob’s struggle with Canavan disease (a degenerative birth disorder with severe physical and perceptual consequences), founded Jacob’s Cure to raise awareness and funds for clinical research. The latter is Stacie Mindich-Jordan, the mom behind BabyDish’s BabyBeReady Diaper Bag Survival Kit, a baby essentials tote that helps take some of the guesswork out of on the go infant care.

Chic Change Artist

trunkt_changepad.gif

For chic diapering on the go, reader Sophie from New York, NY wrote in with high praise for the Rio Grande Toddler Change Pad from Pineapple Cove (shown; $50 at the amazing art and design collective Trunkt). Featuring an oversized zipper pocket to securely hold diapers and wipes, and thick padding to comfortably cushion your baby, the interior is waterproof and the pad folds from 34 x 13” to 7.5 x 13” and secures with a Velcro closure. Plush Pacifiers

babydagny7pk.gif

Although I initially was among those new parents wary of pacifiers, Laurel was so orally fixated as an infant that there were many moments where I desperately wished she would take a pacifier so I could have my pinky (or breast) back. She would have none of the plastic stuff.

Perhaps she would have changed her tune with one of the cute Plush Pacifiers from Baby Dagny. Their exclusively designed WubbaNub pacifier is attached to any of a host of small cuddly critters that little hands will want to hold onto, thus keeping the pacifier in the mouth, not on the ground (shown, the Ultimate Shower Set 7pk included in this year’s Oscar swag bags; $72). These plush pacifiers are machine washable, suitable for babies from 2 months to 2 years, and are offered in a variety of set size/animal combos, starting at two for $29.

Play It Cool

pottyflush.gif

The last couple of weeks with our new resident Pee Master have been marvelous. And Laurel recently surprised us by making a couple of unexpected solid deliveries into the toilet.

It’s only a couple of data points, but we’re wondering whether our “play it cool” approach is contributing to the ease of this new development. Despite Laurel’s clear preference to use a diaper for pooping, we decided to simply continue to offer a choice of diaper or potty when she needs to poop, assuming she’d come around at some point (plus, it’s all about having choice with her). This process has worked really well; it seems to provide some practice thinking about bodily control, and has helped avoid soiled underpants, potty regression, and constipation (from not wanting to let go in the potty).

Super Sized Swaddling

susiesswaddlers.gif

Good things can happen when a mom and daughter put their heads together.

Susan Slatmyer and Shaughna Giracca, the mother-daughter team behind Susie’s Swaddlers, found that while swaddling was a powerful means to achieve nighttime infant sleep, babies outgrow traditional 30” blankets well before they outgrow the need to be swaddled. The crafty response to this need evolved into Susie’s Swaddlers. Simple in concept but spectacular in effect, these 43” square, extra large receiving blankets are made to order from soft 100% cotton flannel in singles ($15) or 3-pack gift sets ($40) for boys, girls, or unisex.

And once your swaddling days are over, these blankets serve well in the stroller, crib, or car seat, or as a play mat in the yard or at the beach.

Clever Magnetic Childproofing

revashelf.gif

Our friends Andrew & Nooshi always have the coolest gadgets, so it’s no surprise that they introduced us to an amazingly innovative childproofing system.

The Rev-A-Shelf Rev-A-Lock system ($29.95 at SafeBeginnngs.com; includes 5 locks, 2 keys, installation screws, and instructions) is the perfect solution for cabinets (or drawers) with standalone handles (i.e., adjacent handle loop latches won’t work). This lock system is based on a powerful magnet; it’s impossible to open doors or drawers even a crack when the system is engaged, preventing pinched little fingers. The lock disengages when the magnetic key is positioned over the lock installation area, and snaps back into the locked position when the key is removed. Once the lock system is no longer needed, just flip the red disengage bar on the back of the lock.

Potty Improv

potty.gif

I love shopping, but sometimes the New England crusty in me gets fed up with buying multiple incarnations of the same basic baby product.

We bought the Bjorn Toilet Trainer and Safe Step since Laurel tends to be a do everything like mommy daddy girl. But on Day 2 of potty training it seemed like she just wasn’t comfortable. She was squirming a lot on the seat, and her feet were just an inch or two shy of reaching the Safe Step so there was no where to plant her feet and get busy.

Me Too!

metoochair.gif

A tip from a local reader provides support for the notion that you may not need that regular highchair after all. This mama of two loves the Me Too Portable Highchair. She reports: “I got one for my second child and put our free-standing highchair away forever. It hooks on the edge of a counter top or table and it is washable and dries overnight (my friend puts hers in the dishwasher, but the instructions say not to).... And, it has an aluminum frame so it is very light. We take it when we travel, or out for dinner…it is great for small spaces!”

The Me Too Portable Highchair is suitable for babes 9 months and up, up to 40 pounds. It features a durable industrial-strength nylon seat, aluminum frame, and five-point safety harness; this chair attaches to tables up to 1 7/8" thick via adjustable clamps and folds to a petite 13"L x 12"W x 1"H. Available in Baby Feeding & Nursing Essentials at BabyCenter ($49.95), where it has earned similar rave reviews.

Fashion Meets Function

zolo.jpg

Beautiful fabric makes me dizzy; I can only assume it was new parent fatigue that left me with the bland (navy blue, beige) slings I purchased a couple of years back when Laurel was born. And with Laurel, the sling practically was my uniform during her first year; I deserved better trimmings.

ZoloWear celebrates stylish babywearing through their gorgeous collection of pouches (one loop of fabric that can be tightened with a single button and four buttonholes) and ring slings (rectangle of fabric threaded through two rings for adjustability and positioning versatility) in bright, modern cottons, luxurious silk brocades, and breathable Solarveil mesh for warm weather. For true hands-free walkabouts, pouches come with a d-ring for keys or a toy, the ring slings with a zippered pocket on the tail (which also can serve as an impromptu burp cloth or breastfeeding cover).

We especially love the modern, coordinate-with-any-outfit Jetson fabric (shown, ring sling $89.99; pouch $53.99), which features yummy blue and cream dots on chocolate stretch cotton sateen. These slings are so breathtaking that passersby might actually overlook your cute bundle of joy for a split second.

Stylin' Slings

gozozo.jpg

Previously purely functional, baby slings have undergone a marvelous evolution, incorporating fabulous fabrics that provide both a stylish ride for baby, and a welcome cover up for the spit up stains all over your shirt.

We recently were thrilled to learn about gOzOzO, a Boston area sling manufacturer. gOzOzO’s slings are similar in construction to the New Native carrier (made famous by Cindy Crawford), but take a big leap ahead by offering a great selection of machine washable fabric options at terrific prices (shown Retro Flower; $40). Even better, these slings are constructed to be reversible, with the patterned fabric on one side and a solid contrast fabric on the reverse. Choose from a range of premade slings, or build one from the ground up.

For your emulating little one, gOzOzO also offers doll slings ($12), and is soon to roll out a compact stroller pouch to tame on the go accessories for parent and baby.

Reduce Your Baggage

ducktub.jpg

With holiday travel comes cumbersome physical (and sometimes emotional) baggage. You at least can take charge of reducing your physical baggage with the Munchkin Duck Bathtub ($9.99 at Target). Recommended by a mama reader from Italy (whose 20-month-old has enjoyed this tub all across Europe), this inflatable tub stows compactly and is suitable for ages 6-24 months, has a heat safety feature, and a non-slip surface to keep baby in place.

Maniac, Interrupted

ikea_agam.jpg

Sometimes little people just want to be taken seriously.

A mama pal offers high praise for the Ikea AGAM highchair ($34.99). Easy to assemble, stylish, and completely unobtrusive (I didn’t even notice it at the dining room table with all of the adult chairs), this solid wood piece makes my pal’s son feel like a big boy, up at the proper height with everyone else.

Ikea recommends this chair for children 3 years+, although apparently toddlers who can understand and follow commands can handle this chair with supervision. My pal notes that the lack of safety straps resulted in an unexpected benefit; because her 28-month old needs to be “super careful” at the table, his maniac dining tendencies (e.g., pushing away from the table, kicking and squirming) have evaporated.

Double Duty

valco.gif

Aside from the general chaos factor, having a second baby presents a transport issue, particularly if your first still requires periodic strolling.

A mama friend gives major kudos to the Valco Runabout Tri Mode stroller ($425 at BabyCenter shipping is free, a rain/wind shield is included). Cool looking and compact, the Valco three-wheel all-terrain stroller offers full recline for infants, and toddlers will love the royal perspective from the toddler attachment seat ($40). If you like the look of a pram, a bassinet attachment ($150) also is available.

The height-adjustable handles make this stroller a good find for couples with a substantial height differential. Open dimensions: 36"L x 26"W x 40"H; folded: 32"L x 26"W x 16"H; weight: 25 lbs. Suitable from birth to 50 lbs.

Lunch Is Served

llbean_lunchbox.jpg

I love anything monogrammed. Perhaps the identity permanence appeals to me, having grown up on hand me downs. In fact, when recently shopping for a new lunchbox for my babe, I only considered styles big enough to allow for monogramming. The L.L. Bean Super Lunch Box, Regular ($16) offers functionality and monogrammability. The main compartment is insulated to keep items cold; the outer pocket keeps crunchy snacks from getting crushed. The pack also includes a side mesh pocket and a front zippered pocket for extra storage.

Since I’m a scientist by training and have an independently minded toddler on my hands, I couldn’t resist conducting a little experiment (i.e., game for the babe). Sitting at the laptop with the babe on my lap, I used a two interval (color choice, e.g., red vs. blue) two alternative (pick the 1st or 2nd color) forced choice paradigm and asked the babe to choose between various color pairs. I accounted for order effects by repeating color choices in a pseudo-random order. The babe showed excellent response consistency for the foliage (shown) lunchbox. The lunchbox just arrived today and she loves it; she carried the pack all around the house declaring she was going on vacation.

If you happen to have an L.L. Bean credit card, order using your account login to get free monogramming and shipping.

Riding in Comfort

piddlepad.jpg

A mama pal from Halifax, Nova Scotia writes in about a fabulous product she picked up for her potty training son. The Piddle Pad from Kiddopotamus is a lifesaver in the car. The top side is soft terrycloth; the backing is vinyl to protect the seat and seatbelts from accidents. With one (or more) of these on hand you won’t be stuck with a babe in a soggy seat, and the major nuisance of wrestling off the car seat cover and running laundry as soon as you get home.

The Piddle Pad is machine washable (of course!) and available for $7.99 at Babies R Us or $8.99 at Amazon.

Send 'Em Packing

pb_backpack.jpg

Your babe will be happy to head to school with this super cute Fairfax Pre-School Backpack ($19) from Pottery Barn Kids. The wraparound alligator or elephant pattern is appliquéd, adjustable shoulder straps are padded for comfort, and hanging loops go well on a hook or the backpack easily stows in a cubby. Add your babe’s name or initials for $6. Measures 11 x 3 x 12" H.

It's a Miracle!

miracleblanket.jpg

Miracles do happen. Just ask my mama friend Paige, whose otherwise peaceful 9-week old babe was waking every couple of hours through the night. Pediatric suggestions to slightly elevate the babe or administer Maalox (in case the problem was reflux) were attempted in vain. Things were getting ugly.

Then one of Paige’s mama friends turned her on to the Amazing Miracle Blanket. No joke. This extra long 100% cotton knit swaddling blanket resulted in an immediate result of 9 straight hours of sleep. Basically, while we all experience sleep-disturbing twitches through the night (I have been known to knee my husband in the kidney), infants haven’t yet learned to soothe themselves back to sleep. Swaddling helps prevent the big twitches that lead to night waking while creating a cozy, womb-like environment.

Machine washable and dryable, the blanket retails for $26.95 at Amazon (green, undyed natural, blue), or more colors are available for $29.95 at BabyCenter. Locally, Paige picked hers up at Isis Maternity.

Parenting Naturally

logo_nfb.jpg

While I love trundling around little boutiques on foot, sometimes one stop shopping is the way to go. Boston area mama Jeniphir Taylor-McIntire, a sales consultant for Natural Family Boutique, recently pointed me to her online store.

Natural Family Boutique offers eco-friendly products to support families from conception to weaning. The site offers Haba toys (my favorite toy line, period!) and apparel for babes, indulgent jewelry, spa, and home items for mamas, and lots of products for new parents (breastfeeding, baby care, and cloth diapering supplies, pregnancy, birth and postpartum products, books & CDs, slings). The site also offers resource material on breastfeeding, pregnancy and birth, nutrition, parenting, natural living, and activism.

Host a mama’s night out NFB party with Jenipher and get discounts and freebies along the way. Send Jenipher an email to find out more.

UPDATE 8/15/07: Sadly, Natural Family Boutique has closed its virtual doors. Please visit our category links to the left for more fabulous toy, gear, and pregnancy resources.

Roll 'Em Out, Move 'Em In

mothersmilkmate.jpg

I love optimization and organization. So I was thrilled to discover the Mothers Milkmate Storage Rack ($26.99 at Amazon). It optimizes because the bottles hook up directly to most breast pumps and can attach to a universal nipple and collar to feed the babe directly. The system organizes by featuring a space saving storage rack designed to allow ten five-ounce bottles to rotate so that the milk is used in a "first-in, first-out" basis (i.e., you pull the first bottle out, and the others roll in behind it).

The Kosher certified storage system includes a heavy-duty wire rack, 10 polypropylene plastic bottles, 10 plug and cap sets (to eliminate leaking), and freezer grade labels.

Bounce Your Way to Sanity

bjorn_bouncer.jpg

Is it too dramatic to say that the Baby Bjorn 1-2-3 Baby Sitter ($114 at Amazon) saved my life? Even on an indulgent day my typical shower routine takes 15 minutes tops. But for some reason, as a new mom I found it incredibly difficult to find the time to take a shower; impossible seeming actually, if my husband had already left for work and I was on my own during the day.

One day I realized that, by virtue of the spit up chunks in my hair, I was redefining the term “bad hair day.” So I set the babe up in the Bjorn bouncy chair right outside the shower, peeked out frequently while I lathered up, and emerged from the shower spit up free (even if only for a few minutes) and rejuvenated. A mere seven minutes in the shower left me with a massively improved frame of mind from which to embark on my day of baby adventures. After all, a happy mom makes for a happy baby. The Bjorn chair also served well when I tried bottles with the babe (if I held her, she was obviously confused by the lack of booby access), as well as when she started solid foods but was too little to sit up in a high chair.

The Baby Bjorn 1-2-3 Baby Sitter can be used up to 29 lbs and has a three-point fabric safety harness, three-position recline, and removable toy bar with solid (nontoxic paint) wood toys. It folds for storage and the seat padding is washable.

Up On High

ikea_highchair.jpg

More on the great high chair debate. Another mama friend who favors modern designs is thrilled with her Ikea Antilop High Chair. For a mere $18.99, this chair will sit inoffensively amidst your décor and is so inexpensive that you can pick up an extra one to leave out on the deck.

The Antilop measures 22 7/8 inches wide, 24 3/8 inches deep, and 35 3/8 high with a seat height of 21 5/8 inches. You also can purchase a matching high chair tray for $5.

Give Me a Boost

fisherprice_booster.jpg

One of my mama friends is a firm believer that high chairs are a waste of money and space and I think she very well may be right. We splurged on the beautiful Svan high chair for its’ sleek, compact design but the infant table was a nuisance to clean, we have a distinct Svan-shaped wear spot on the hardwood floor, and most alarmingly, the base sometimes isn't stable enough when our toddler is in rambunctious mode at the table. I’m just not keen on being cast alongside Britney Spears in the mama’ing domain.

So what’s the alternative? The Fisher-Price Healthy Care Booster Seat will only set you back $22.99 (compared to $270 for the Svan chair + cushion...ouch). Fab mama friend and I are thinking that so long as you have a low priority dining chair with a nice sturdy base, you can forego the high chair in favor of a booster seat. Plus, the booster packs up easily for travel or restaurant visits.

The Fisher-Price Healthy Care Booster Seat has a removable feeding tray, 3-point harness and 3 height adjustments and is available at Amazon for $22.99 and $24.99 at Babies R Us.

How Funky is Your Potty?

boon_potty.jpg

Think you have all the latest gadgets? The July/August 2006 issue of Cookie Magazine features a potty that looks like an iMac. The Boon Potty Bench is available for $29.99 at TargetTarget or Amazon and features side storage for supplies, pull out drawer for easy clean up, toilet paper holder, splash guard for the gents, and best of all: the “large, sturdy bench can support up to 300 lbs.” Whoa. That’s one sturdy toddler.
