Best of April 2013

DIY-bracelets.jpgHappy last day of April! Following my January, February, and March best-of posts, today I'm rounding up the most helpful, insightful, favored-by-the-community posts from April. I hope you enjoy this month's roundup, handy for browsing during lunch, on the pick up line, or wherever! Also, here are a few of my favorite recent pins: a cool way to display Instagram photos, an 8-week half marathon plan, a pretty, ladylike dress I just ordered, DIY bracelets, and book club fodder.

Give the Gift of Dignity. And a Gorgeous Scarf Too.

Genet-thumbnail.jpgOne of the most beautiful things about the online space is how incredibly nimble people can be to make awesome things happen. In October when I traveled to Ethiopia as part of the ONE Moms delegation, our team created such an online stir about fashionABLE that they were able to create three new jobs. This past winter, fellow Ethiopia companion and dear friend Gabrielle Blair, of Design Mom and Alt Summit, worked with ONE and fashionABLE to challenge the Alt community to design an exclusive ONE/fashionABLE Mother's Day scarf. And today the beautiful Genet scarf is available for purchase (with free shipping today and tomorrow).

Spring Style Lift: A Rainbow Collection of Flats

spring-style-purple-shoes.jpgI meant to post the last of my four-part spring style lift series (see also, necklaces, scarves, studs!) last week. However, time ran away from me and I also couldn't fathom sharing spring shoe recommendations when the sidewalks were obscured by snow and ice! But the snow is melting, next week is April, and I didn't wear socks the whole time I was in Dallas this past weekend! Here are 8 flats recommendations for you, in an array of colors across the rainbow; perfect for adding pop to an outfit, while still being kid-chasing-friendly!

Spring Style Lift: 8 Statement Necklaces

necklace-banjo-and-bone.jpgMy friend Jess kindly has called me queen of the statement necklace. It's true; I do love accessories for pop, particularly as an easy (and overall more affordable) way to elevate an outfit while sticking to neutrals with clothing. In my third spring style lift post (see also, scarves + studs), I wanted to share 8 statement necklaces. If you've been wary of trying bold jewelry, I say go for it. Or borrow a friend's necklace and give it a go and see how it feels. You'll be amazed by how quickly a bold necklace can finish an outfit and draw admiring looks!

Spring Style Lift: 6 Striking Studs

earrings-jcrewfactory-coral.jpgBecause I'm still operating in daily scarf mode (and plan on being in this mode for a while), my daily earring of choice is studs, both to prevent snags on said scarves and also because Violet can't resist pawing at my ears when I wear dangling earrings. But studs need not be boring! For installment #2 of my spring style series (see #1 here), here are 6 striking studs that are practical (when worn with scarves and alongside toddlers...) but full of pop for every day.

Spring Style Lift: 5 Pretty Scarves

scarf-loft-thumb.jpgTomorrow is the first day of March, which to me means the countdown to spring is officially on! Yay, spring! In anticipation of the good weather, I thought it would be fun to share a little series on spring style...small tweaks for giving a spring lift to your wardrobe. Today, I'll feature scarves, which are an easy way to add a little punch to an outfit while also keeping you cozy during transition temperatures.

Six Reasons Why You Should Try Bangs

bowl-cut.jpgLast Thursday I visited my friend Honey Jo for a long overdue haircut. I adore Honey Jo for many reasons, but on the professional side, I love how confident I feel in her talent. When she asks what I want to do with my hair, I always say, "I'm open -- what do you think would be fun?" And that the results are always fabulous. She's done brilliant color work, chopped my hair short, and last week gave me bangs for the first time since, well, a long time ago. I was thrilled with my hair, but it wasn't until the Instagram picture I posted on Facebook blew up that I thought more about bangs editorially. Here are six reasons why I think you should consider trying them:

Giveaway Goodness: Bogs Footwear

bogs.jpgThough I love living in a part of the country that experiences four seasons, I always miss the ease of flip flop season when it's over, particularly when it's time to transition to, well, anything with laces (especially cumbersome winter boots). A solid solution? Bogs Footwear, purveyors of sturdy (often cheerfully styled) footwear for men, women, and kids. I dig the equestrian styling of the McKenna, which is a 100% waterproof, insulated boot with a leather overlay. Comfy, stylish, and easy to slide into in two seconds while I'm bundling up Laurel and Violet = awesome. And how cool is this? The folks at Bogs kindly are offering a $100 gift certificate for one of you awesome readers! Here's how to enter to win:

A Day of Hope

fashionABLE.jpgI have been a complete jumble of emotions since arriving in Addis Ababa on the ONE Moms mission trip. Yesterday, I was a bit of a wreck after bonding with a child at Mary Joy. But today, despite the painful histories and continued hardships to which I was exposed, I experienced a day of hope. I saw progress and great strides being made to improve the lives of Ethiopian women and their children. I saw it in the form of fashionABLE and the Hamlin Fistula Hospital.

5 Mighty Accessories

ms-benches.JPGA few weeks ago I arrived home from Mighty Summit with my heart full of admiration for the talented women I connected with on the trip, and my head and notebook full of inspiration resulting from conversation and reflection time. I also returned with lovely accessories -- some of which I've been wearing, well, pretty much constantly. I wanted to share them here because they are awesome and I think you will love them too.

Giveaway Goodness: Dansko

dansko-rowena.jpgWhen I first learned about Dansko, it was all about the clogs, which I found comfortable when I was making rounds at the hospital during my postdoc, and when I was on my feet all day working retail. And while Dansko clogs have become a footwear staple in those two arenas, it's been fun to see them go beyond the clog. I get tons of mileage out of these stylish miracle boots during the fall and winter, and Dansko also offers other heeled options for those seeking elevation while maintaining a balanced base. And how cool is this? The folks at Dansko kindly have offered to give away a pair of Rowena shoes to one of you awesome readers! Here's how to enter to win:

5 Frump-Free Slippers

slippers-grace-acorn.jpgJon and I have always been a no-shoes household. Partially due to habit for me and also because I'm all about reducing the need to break out a broom or mop (and of course it's handy when you have orally fixated babies roaming around). Since we have hardwood floors that are freezing in the winter and cool the rest of the year round, slippers are a mainstay. I recently tossed my cheap (and admittedly frumpy) slippers and have been looking for a frump-free replacement. I queried on social media and also perused over a dozen online stores looking for inspiration. Though I hoped to include some under $20 picks, there definitely seems to be a correlation between price and frump factor. Here are 5 frump-free slipper options; some are a little spendy, but the cost per wear would probably work out well if you wear slippers daily.

The Perfect Dress Style (Nursing or Not)

ralph-lauren-dresses-thumb.jpgWhen Laurel was a baby, one of my rookie nursing mom mistakes was attending a wedding in a regular dress -- meaning, one with an inflexible neckline and a side zipper that basically made it impossible to nurse without undressing. So when I started looking for nursing-friendly dresses to wear to a couple of weddings this year, after being completely underwhelmed by the nursing cocktail dress market, I was thrilled to land on the perfect style -- a dress that looks fabulous, nursing or not.

Kudos for the Rack

nordstrom-rack-hat.jpgJust yesterday I suggested rotating your kids' wardrobes. Today, Jennifer offers inspiration to rotate yours as well:

If you're like me, you are just now swapping out the summer clothes for fall, and my fall stuff definitely needed a few fun updates. When Nordstrom Rack opened recently in Burlington (dangerously close to my 'hood; there also are locations in Danvers and Framingham), I was intrigued. I should say that prior to my recent trip, I had never been to a Nordstrom Rack and I rarely go to Nordstrom's or the mall, because I'm a frugal shopper and tend to camp out at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. I like to say it's because I am committed to supporting local businesses (their HQ is in Framingham) but it's also because they are just. simply. awesome. stores. I can maximize 10 minutes wedged between a meeting and school pick-up and come out with a great Calvin Klein dress for $49.

Weekly Blueprint

landsend-boys.jpgPer my previous post, welcome to this new series, in which I'll share everything from events to bargain alerts to other ideas and tips that spring to mind as useful and/or fun for the week. After considerable mulling, I decided to call the series Weekly Blueprint, because I think the name conveys a creative presentation of ideas and plans that are, ultimately, posed for your consideration (vs. including the term "to do," which suggests that I think you must do whatever it is I'm suggesting!). Enjoy, and please do drop me a line if you have suggestions for a future Weekly Blueprint!

Chic, Eco-Friendly Sweats

activewearusa-ggo-boxtop.jpgToday, Jules shares a review of some eco-friendly fitness apparel from ActivewearUSA. Read on for her review, as well as to learn how to win a $50 gift certificate to ActivewearUSA:

Believe me, I'm well aware that it's easy to let fashion fall to the wayside as a mom. I love fashion, but I avoid wearing silk or cashmere around the kids. If I'm going out, I walk around in a towel until about 17 seconds before I'm going to leave the house to up my chances of walking out the door stain-free. And during the week, the reality is that as a mom, gym rat, and laundry/diaper aficionado, I live in my sweats. So I was thrilled to test out some organic fitness apparel from ActivewearUSA and find that they're chic, comfortable, and feel like they will last forever.

Tickled by Tea

tea-collection.jpgI've known about Tea Collection for a while (I still regret that I never got around to purchasing from their Korea collection a while back), but it wasn't until recently that I had a chance to see their products. And while the clothes are really lovely out of the box, they move to the realm of tremendously awesome once placed on real little bodies. I recently had the opportunity to style some pieces from Tea's fall collection and was struck not only by the quality and design, but by the ability to create really cute coordinated (but not overly matchy match) sibling outfits (read: perfect for family photos or general everyday cuteness). Read on to check out the coordinated outfits I assembled, as well as to learn how to be one of three winners to receive a $100 Tea gift certificate!

Giveaway Goodness: Gilt Groupe

gilt-children.jpgEver since signing on last year as one of Gilt Groupe's inaugural Gilt-y Moms (a small advisory group), I've been more than a little addicted to their flash sale site, which is replete with stylish finds of all kinds. (Recent awesome women's purchase? A Kate Spade tote. One of their current awesome kids sales? Haba toys. New category I really need to try soon? Gilt Taste. And so on...) And right now Gilt Children is in the middle of a summer spectacular on their Facebook page, through which you can read and share summer tips and ideas. So far conversations have covered traditions and travel tips, and this week's theme is play dates. I've been picking up all sorts of handy nuggets of wisdom over the last couple of weeks!

Super Cute Swimsuits

lands-end-geo-print.jpgThough I typically am a fan of bikinis, given that I'm hitting swimsuit season about three months postpartum, I wanted a little more coverage this season. Just the other week I was looking remorsefully at my bikini collection (which includes a couple of cute bikinis I bought at Lands' End last year) when Lands' End reached out and asked if I'd like to try out some swimsuits for editorial consideration. And I'm thrilled to report that there's just as much cuteness in the full coverage suits as there are in the bikinis. Here are two great picks to consider:

12 Bits of Web Awesomeness

i-heart-massachusetts.jpgHello everyone -- I hope you have fantastically relaxing plans for the Memorial Day long weekend! joslyn1-michelle-armas.jpgI met Joslyn Taylor of Simple Lovely last year in New York City at an event to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, and was thrilled to reconnect with her awesomeness at Altitude Design Summit this year. Joslyn is so elegant and has wonderful (seemingly effortless!) style, so for today's four favorites guest post, I asked Joslyn to share four pretty and lovely things to help moms forget the giant mess that home has turned into (when I asked Joslyn to guest post I envisioned being surrounded by soiled burp cloths, breast pump supplies, and take out containers...).

Budget and Eco-Friendly Swapping

life-style-episode-16.jpgIt was so fun to return to Life.Style this week, and especially cool that technology allowed me to host via Skype so I could remain close to baby Violet. Four (OK, Six) Postpartum Fashion Picks

nine-west-flats.jpgMy friend Lindsay Ferrier not only is a fantastic, funny writer (her personal blog Suburban Turmoil makes me laugh and cry, and her style blog She's Still Got It has inspired more than a few shopping sprees), but she always looks fantastically put together while being totally approachable. Fantastic Maternity Tights

sara-blakely-assets-maternity-tights.jpgI love wearing dresses, but clearly, going bare legged isn't the greatest option if getting from point A to B involves going outside in frigid winter weather. So I was thrilled to find -- in advance of heading to Alt Summit -- Sara Blakely's ASSETS maternity tights. Though slimming features weren't my concern, I was drawn to these tights given Blakely's Spanx reputation, and clearly, Blakely knows how to deliver the goods. The tights are affordable, supportive, true to size, and feature a remarkably comfortable pregnancy panel (I also bought a pair of cheapo back up tights and they were nowhere near as well made). At Alt, while I did go bare legged in a dress one evening (when getting from points A to B/C/D were all within the hotel), I wore the ASSETS tights another night out with a purple dress with cool metal accents and gray peep toe booties. I felt fantastic. And fantastically comfortable. Even after indulging in too many finger foods.

Dear Boston Mamas: Maternity Clothes Shopping on a Budget

mighty-aphrodite.gifToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from CM via e-mail:

Medical Accessory Alert

laurens-hope-robot-medical-id.jpgToday, Jennifer shares a couple of great resources for medical alert tracking and cool ID accessories for grownups and kids:

I love jewelry and accessories...I mean, I really, really love them. So when a recent medical issue resulted in my need for a medic ID bracelet (I have an adult onset seizure disorder controlled by meds -- or as I like to say, I'm just a little bit electric), the diagnosis left me with a serious accessory challenge: where do I get a cute medic alert bracelet? Second Trimester (Or Not!) Fall Fashion

bcbg-max-azria-tunic.jpgOne thing that's clear about pregnancy is that bodies grow very differently (when in doubt, do not ask!). I "popped" late with Laurel, and it's been similar this go around. At almost 17 weeks, though I'm definitely feeling thicker around the middle, I'm still wearing my regular clothes; as of two weeks ago, I simply looked a little full of korma and last week I started sporting a little bump that's still not evident in regular clothes. Through the second trimester, transition pieces are key, and I'm all about mining one's existing wardrobe, particularly since in the second trimester you may not be ready for full blown maternity clothing. Here are my five favorite regular wardrobe pieces that are serving me immensely well in transition. I've put together a few cute looks based on these pieces and all of these looks are non-maternity wear, so even if you aren't pregnant you can enjoy them. Today I'm focusing on casual clothing and plan on doing a dressy/work roundup soon.

Two Local Stylish Finds

lady-luxe.jpgToday, parent educator Hetti Wohlgemuth of Alphabet Soup 4 Parents takes a departure from parenting advice to recommend two stylish local finds:

Given my apparent talent for spilling black coffee, chocolate ice cream, and ketchup on myself, I don't like spending lots of money on clothing. For me, it's not worth it to ruin expensive clothes and it's good to tighten the spending belt when a bad economy threatens us. That said, I still like to shop, dress well, and look professional. Here are two Boston area shops to try that won't break the bank.

Dansko's Miracle Boots

dansko-gitte-tigers-eye-patent.jpgFor probably the last five years, I've anticipated boot season with excitement and hope, and ultimately have come out the other side disappointed. I know this may sound a tad melodramatic but it's true. My typical ritual is this: I fawn over online and print fall boot fashion spreads, hit the stores loaded with energy, and leave utterly deflated because everything I try on makes my calves feel like sausages. And it's not as if I have super large calves, just some little muscles from running and yoga. Nonetheless, all boots to date have suffocated. Until Dansko that is. Read on to learn more Dansko's kid's collection and "miracle boots" (my name for them), as well as to learn how to win a pair of Dansko shoes for you and your child!

The Magic of Gap

gap-lightweight-wool-blazer.jpgI must admit that I've been a tad "meh" about Gap clothing for some time. I primarily shop online and though I realize the in-store experience is important, I haven't felt particularly motivated to head to the store after browsing periodically from the comfort of my home. Yes, I'm a big fan of mix and match basics, but their collection often struck me as largely basic. I will now, however, look at Gap's offerings with a whole new perspective, thanks to a recent outing with one of their stylists.

Birthday Giveaway: Stella & Dot

stella-and-dot.jpg Normally I'm not an offer to host a trunk show type of gal, but after seeing some of the products from my friend (and BM contributor) Paige's Stella & Dot stylist gig, I totally wanted to see more. So I recently hosted a trunk show for Paige, and it was an utterly lovely morning that involved chilling with friends, enjoying yummy food and drink, and ogling beautiful trays of jewelry (in a boutique shopping, totally non-pushy sales way). Stella & Dot covers a mix of styles, including looks that range from classic to edgy to girly to elegant; these earrings and this ring are totally making their way into my shopping cart this week (also note: the earrings I purchased as teacher gifts at the end of the school year were a huge hit). And as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Paige generously is gifting one lucky winner with their choice of Stella & Dot goods up $100 in value. Birthday Giveaway: Jute and Jackfruit

jute-and-jackfruit.jpgI love when I visit a new website that is easy to navigate and loaded with cool eco-finds and learn that it is based locally. Such was the case with Jute and Jackfruit, an organic and socially conscious women's e-boutique based in Arlington that sources primarily from budding female designers and women's artisan groups and cooperatives from around the world. While some of their clothing includes bold pattern-blocking, I think a look composed of some of their soft hued pieces paired with a punchy recycled material clutch or fair trade, hand-loomed scarf would make for an awesome head to toe eco-look. And as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Jute and Jackfruit generously is gifting one lucky winner with a $75 gift certificate! Birthday Giveaway: Moody Mamas

moody-mamas.jpgI loved being pregnant with Laurel (I was one of those annoying people who experienced a blissfully smooth pregnancy), but I wasn't wild about the limited fashion options at that time. Luckily, maternity style now is a cinch, thanks to collections such as those by Moody Mamas. Including a range of apparel options, I'm particularly keen on the ease of dresses (maternity or not), and Moody Mamas offers both a budget line via Target and a collection of day and night dresses through a partnership with Project Runway phenom Christian Siriano; the cowl neck jersey dress (pictured) is one of my faves. The Cutest Helmets Ever

polarn-o-pyret.jpgThe bold and cheerful clothing of Swedish outfitter Polarn O. Pyret has been on my radar for some time, but it wasn't until recently that I had a chance to check out some samples in person. And I'm happy to report that Polarn O. Pyret delivers the cuteness and the quality. Offering an eye popping collection of clothing for babies, kids, and expecting moms (totally shopping this collection if I ever go that road again), I am -- not surprisingly -- most drawn to their 100% organic cotton collection. Well constructed to endure plenty of wear and laundering, I find the nature-inspired patterning of the Gunila Axen body suit + matching helmet particularly awesome. Besides, every baby really ought to have a cute little helmet for their cute little noggin.

Cute, Decent Coverage Bikinis

lands-end-aquaterra.jpgOne thing that used to curb my shopping at Lands' End was that they never offered flat percentage discounts + free shipping. And whether they started listening to consumer complaints (admittedly, I grumbled about this issue on Twitter at least once or twice), or simply decided to jump on the bandwagon with all the other online retailers, it's all good: LE has been offering lots of online deals of late. And while I recently took advantage of one of said deals, in addition to stocking up on Laurel's tankinis and action sandals, I was thrilled to find that this year's collection includes some cute women's bikinis with decent coverage.

Love These Links: (Mostly) DIY Edition

alpha-mom-plantable-paper.jpgHere are some lovely links that caught my eye this week around the web. Clearly I've got DIY projects (and travel) on my mind. I love this pretty plantable paper project from Alpha Mom (shown) and this sweet paper corsage tutorial from Make and Takes. Laurel loved the face painting, games, snacks, and garden displays, and I was especially thrilled to see many green companies I have featured (Boston Organics, Bum Boosa, Diaper Lab, Go GaGa, Sakura Bloom, Seventh Generation, snackTAXI, Stonyfield) present, and also to discover new ones, such as Acero Studio. Mom-owned and based out of New Bedford, artist Anne Wolfe creates lovely vintage-styled graphics then hand prints them onto a delicious array of microwave and dishwasher safe ceramics and porcelain jewelry.

Stay Put Slippers

kayas-kloset.jpgAs the mom of a sock-resistant child in a “no shoes” house (a rule stemming from my Asian upbringing and immense distaste for increased need to vacuum), slippers are a must. And if you want cute slippers for kids and grownups, check out Kaya’s Kloset. Available for feet big and small (including organics), local mama Johanna Parker offers an amazing array of handcrafted baby shoes and kid/adult slippers featuring nonskid soles to prevent crash and burns and elasticized ankles so the slippers stay put. Though Laurel shuns socks, she loves her prettily patterned Kaya’s Kloset slippers; apparently part of their appeal is their lightweight-ness (“They’re so light it feels like I’m not wearing anything!”). Which means she keeps them on. Which makes me really happy.

Now, want to win a pair of Kaya’s Kloset shoes? Here’s how:

Denim Guide: Trend Navigation

old-navy-jeans.jpgPursuant to her fit your shape denim guide, Sarah follows up with guidance on how to navigate trends:

“Now that you know what shapes to look for to suit your figure, it’s time for some trend navigation. But you have to know your comfort level. Are you willing to push the envelope, stylistically speaking, or would you rather play it classic? This season, you’re in luck, because the denim world is full of a little something for everyone.

Simplifying The Holidays: Easy Accessorizing

jcrew-silk-bouquet-sash.jpgI met Allison Czarnecki of Petit Elefant this past summer at the T.J. Maxx/Marshalls event; she’s one of these people who exudes a lot of wonderfully happy mojo, whether it’s in person, through her blog posts, or via Twitter and Facebook. As a blogger, I particularly love Allison’s keen eye for style and her desire to offer ideas for a range of budgets. I’m subsequently thrilled that today, for the sixth installment of my Simplifying the Holidays guest blog series, Allison shares simple guidelines and great ideas for easy accessorizing.

Simplifying the Holidays: The Little Black Dress, Five Ways

little-black-dress.jpgAudrey McClelland of Mom Generations is one of these women who is insanely busy and has a bajillion people in her life, but when you’re with her, you know you have her warm and loving undivided attention; she's a wonderful friend and I feel so fortunate that we overlap with some regularity at blogger events (I'm also sort of hoping Laurel marries one of her lovely sons someday...). Audrey’s charisma and keen eye for style have transformed her into a top fashion blogger, and I’m thrilled that today – for the third in my Simplifying the Holidays guest blog series – Audrey shares ideas for getting the most mileage out of your favorite little black dress.

Buffalo Exchange

buffalo-exchange.pngDavis Square’s bargain retail profile recently kicked it up a notch with the addition of Buffalo Exchange (on the same block as Poor Little Rich Girl and Good Will). Giving national chain a good name, Buffalo Exchange allows for direct sale or trade of used clothing and accessories, and carries both classic pieces (such as the J. Crew print dress I scored for $23.50...sweet!) and quirkier ones. The two-level store currently offers more goods for women (including rows upon rows of shoes downstairs), though there are some racks for men. Laurel loves treasure hunting with me in Davis; she only requests that this and other stores start carrying used kid’s clothing.

Birthday Giveaway: Heart & Stone Jewelry

heart-and-stone.jpgOne reason I've never purchased a traditional mother's ring or necklace (such as the seven-stone mother’s ring my siblings and I gifted my mom on her 60th birthday, when she was definitely done) is the permanence factor. And this is why I dig the chic flexibility of locally owned Heart & Stone Jewelry. Offering personalized necklaces and rings handcrafted from recycled silver, Heart & Stone’s necklaces allow you to expand your collection of personalized charms and gems infinitely, whether you'd like to symbolize your growing family, beloved pets, momentous dates, or favored symbols and gems. And for our 3rd birthday party Heart & Stone Jewelry is offering one lucky winner a Custom Organic Charm Necklace ($280 value). Simply check out the rules below and leave a comment on this giveaway to enter to win (by midnight EST, Tuesday, September 1).

Treasure Hunting, Part II

ajwright.JPGPursuant to my report on treasure hunting at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, here’s my report on shopping at AJWright. Having never stepped into an AJWright prior to the blogger tour and shopping event, I didn’t have the same experienced eye for layout and inventory as I did walking into the T.J. Maxx and Marshalls event. Even so, it was interesting to learn about a business that has been right under my nose but off my radar for so many years...not to mention fun to discover a few treasures along the way.

Treasure Hunting, Part I

tjmaxx.jpgThere’s something to be said for paying for an experience; say, first class airline tickets, a meal at a chic restaurant that will stow luggage while you shop (as did Stephanie’s on Newbury, where I took a visiting friend yesterday), or spa services that create a truly calming environment (compared to the bargain nail salon where I bang away on my Blackberry so I can work while getting a pedicure). But when it comes to clothing and accessories, generally speaking, I’m all about getting the best bargain. And that’s why I was intrigued to learn about treasure hunting at T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, and AJWright last week. I’ll address T.J. Maxx and Marshalls here and AJWright in a follow up post, given that these were separate events.

Quick Summer Fashion Fixes

Fortunately, this season’s trends offer a number of quick fixes, no matter the trouble spot:

Classy Coverup

And this year, I’m looking forward to stepping out in Lands’ End’s woven tunic coverup in ivory. Airy yet classy, the coverup’s tunic neckline makes for easy donning and removal, the 100% cotton construction is comfy, and the detailing (including pockets, handy for room key and phone) makes the garment pretty enough for a breezy post-swim lunch or ice cream outing.

Alternatively, if you’re not interesting in gifting “stuff” this year, please consider making a gift in honor of mom to the Boston March for Babies. I would be ever so grateful for your support!

Memory, Motherhood, & Celebration

tiffany-pendant.bmpToday, Kate shares how she chose to celebrate her awakening to motherhood:

“The first two years of motherhood were unexpectedly hard for me. I say unexpected because I had sailed through pregnancy and fully expected motherhood to be an enhancement to an already full and happy life, not a fundamental or in some ways jarring change. It sounds naive to write that now, but at the time I was caught totally unprepared for the nagging sense of sadness, emotional disequilibrium, and whispering worry that I was an inadequate and insufficiently loving mother.

Necklace Envy

Track Back In Style

capeclogs.bmpAs a parent, sometimes I find it absurdly challenging to get out the door in one try, and since we’re a shoes-off household, tracking back through the house to fetch forgotten mittens, lunch box, stuffed animal, etc. is much easier with slip on shoes. And these days, I find that I don’t mind the track backs as much thanks to Cape Clogs. Great for every day or as a welcome upgrade to the sneaker + suit commuter look, these Swedish orthopedic clogs are classically structured in make but not the least bit dowdy in look, available in a variety of cheerful and feisty patterns (such as this fierce leopard) for women and kids. I still aim to make it out of the house in one try, but on the days I don't, these cute kicks make the track backs easy.

Shirring & Strutting

landsend.bmpLands’ End is my go-to source for Laurel’s summer tankinis and action sandals, but I also dig that they offer women’s swimsuits with a few magic details to inspire beach strutting confidence. Offering suits for all shapes and sizes, their Slender Suits - which create sleekness via slimming fabric and shirring - are particularly handy to cope with residual winter excess. And the ability to search for suits by body shape helps take the guesswork out of which styles will flatter your rectangular or triangular proportions. The collection does tend toward conservative and I’d love to see LE eventually work more modern prints, but when in doubt, you can fall back on black, or opt for a pretty classic pattern such as the Damask Floral.

Got Your Crack Covered

hipt.jpgWhether it’s a function of post-winter pounds or running in circles with mamas who lack the time to run for real, I’ve recently found myself amidst several episodes of collective discontent over muffin tops (as in, the unwanted roll that hangs over your jeans). To negotiate this problem, as well as that of rear crack or undie exposure, I’ve been recommending the hip-T. This shaped band of comfy stretch cotton covers the potential vulnerable zone between your outfit's top and bottom while creating a stylish, layered look. Style Lift from the LOFT

anntaylorloft.jpgOne challenge for pregnant working women is finding maternity clothing that is stylish and well constructed, but doesn’t break the bank. When I was pregnant with Laurel and hunting for reasonably priced work pieces, I saw a troubling amount of highly flammable polyester construction that was ill reminiscent of the marching band and color guard (yes, color guard) uniforms I wore in high school. Designers are, thankfully, catching on to the need for affordable maternity style, and among the newcomers is the recently launched Ann Taylor LOFT maternity line.

Glass Treasures

lalo.bmpToday, Kate reports on a local purveyor of glass treasures:

“With the holidays long gone and as the grey of winter persists, finding ways to keep shine and brightness in life becomes all the more important. Colorful accessories can add sparkle and happiness, and a small store in the Back Bay offers a beautiful selection of vibrant glass jewelry - rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, hair ornaments - that is both fun and elegant without being overly expensive. Lalo Treasures is a treat for the eyes: the cozy store is bright, welcoming, and colorful. Not to mention that Lalo's blend of materials makes for unusually durable jewelry (customers are encouraged to try on anything they want), making it terrific for moms with babes equally drawn to pretty baubles.”

A Treat for Claustrophobic Feet

ryka.gif

As I’ve been trolling for fall shoes, I’ve come to realize that I have something of a case of foot claustrophobia. I want barely there and easy on/off (the latter being a mom essential actually), and I’m already lamenting the end of flip-flop season. With athletic footwear, however, there’s little choice but to lace up, and thanks to a review partnership with The Parent Bloggers Network and Ryka, I’ve had the chance to test a couple of pairs of Ryka sneakers and identify which ones do and do not make my feet hyperventilate, so to speak.

One Time At Band Camp

bandcamp.gif

Although motherhood typically results in style deterioration, the combination of making it past the 100%-cotton-spit-up-absorbent-baby-care-uniform-phase, and working at one of Boston’s esteemed, male-dominated, and decidedly fashion challenged universities made me even more committed to looking stylish and feminine. So while I’m far from an ideal wardrobe (due to spending guilt and pickiness), I have, since becoming a mommy, become obsessed with pretty details, great shoes, and color, even at the casual level. But if your mommy sweats are getting you down, don’t fret. Today, our friends at The Parent Bloggers Network are offering a fun opportunity to step up your schlumpy mom outfit with a fantastic Coach bag.

Catwalking Tall

anntaylor_noel.gif

During high school and college summers, I scooped ice cream at one of the local best, back when the tip cup was novel; reserved for truly effortful duty such as hand packing quarts of ice cream. My less physically strenuous adult equivalent is a celadon jar, in which I toss cash procured from random Craigslist sales or bills discovered in last season’s pockets. There’s something oddly thrilling about hitting the retail pavement with a wad of cash that feels like free money. It also makes me feel less guilty about splurging on a great find.

Yesterday my jar delivered a pair of shoes that I can’t wait to rock this holiday weekend. Ann Taylor’s Noel Cork Platforms (shown in red; $108) cleverly combine woven straw, patent leather, and cork into a chic sandal that will serve duty at a wedding and likely also for brunch, paired with dressy shorts. My feet tend not to be the easiest to fit (all the more reason to splurge when I find a good pair), but catwalking on the 3+ inch heels (Jon insisted…) wasn’t even that onerous thanks to the padded foot bed.

Smoothing Support

spanx.gif

Despite the warm weather, sometimes fashion or desire dictates the need for the smoothing effects of hose. Reader Ali from South Hamilton wrote in with praise for Mama Spanx:

“Many women are familiar with Spanx, the undergarment revolution of wearer-friendly body slimmers. For pregnant moms, there are now a variety of maternity Spanx styles that support and smooth your changing body. Mama Spanx come in mid-thigh (a.k.a. power panty), footless (in nude or black), and full-length (in nude or black) versions. Bands support your belly and thighs without needing to resort to those large, harness-like pregnancy girdles.”

Hot Mama Ink

hotmamaink.gif

Ironically enough, my wild and crazy college student behavior emerged after finishing undergrad (suspiciously correlated with my meeting Jon, still an undergrad at the time…), complete with the requisite tattoo/belly ring ruminations. And while visiting a dingy Boston piercing parlor promptly scared me out of the idea, now it’s possible to make a rocker chic impression (that’s physically impermanent) through the designs of Hot Mama Ink.

Hot Mama Ink fuses rock and roll style with delicious, delicious comfort (you can never have enough machine washable clothing as a mom…). Their tattoo inspired, motherhood celebrating artwork is screen printed onto soft tanks, hoodies, tees, yoga pants/capris (including maternity), and baby slings. A great pick is the aptly named Fierce Love long sleeve tee (shown; $68), a cozy, sexy, and stylish way to proudly wear motherhood on your sleeve.

Hipster Jeans

ae_jeans.gif

Back in January, after reading an interesting New York Times feature on the intentional – and successful – tactics of niche oriented retailers (i.e., those who cater to particular age/style demographics versus trying to cater to all), the chances of me stepping into a teen (or early 20’s at best) store like American Eagle decreased exponentially. But this morning, emboldened by a favorable AE denim pitch I recalled seeing in a non-teen source, and the need for new denim (not to mention an adventure that would get us out of the house but shield us from the wind), I stopped in with Laurel.

The experience reminded me not to judge a book by its cover. The staffers were friendly and extremely sweet towards Laurel, and I did in fact pick up a terrific pair of jeans. Check out the AE Hipster Jean; it’s got a stylishly low (but not too low) rise and boot cut similar to my beloved Lucky’s, but at a fraction of the price ($29.50). The Sunfaded Wash is particularly fresh for spring, and the back pockets feature flattering signature stitching.

Destination Maternity

destinationmaternity.jpg

Sometimes (particularly after a stretch of indulgent eating) serving as a fashion consultant to a friend is more fun than shopping for yourself. Yesterday I had great fun hitting the maternity pavement with a girlfriend desperately in need of bumpworthy business attire.

After checking out Target and Kohl’s, both of which have a few business separates options but are better suited for casual wear, we hit the jackpot at Destination Maternity in Natick. Surprisingly not overwhelming in square footage, this one-stop shopping location includes retail areas each for Motherhood, Mimi Maternity, A Pea in the Pod, Destination Maternity, and Edamame Spa, which ensures satisfying a range of budgets and clothing styles, whether you are in the market for a $10 basic vs. $300 designer dress.

Make a Statement

tuniandg.gif

Just because tees are an inevitable part of the mommy wardrobe doesn’t mean you can’t hang onto your sassy style.

Tuni & G offers comfy clothing for babies, kids, and adults (including maternity); among their collection are separates that can be paired to create punchy Mommy & Me sets. Especially cool is the My Baby Rolls/My Mom Rocks set (piece prices range from $28-36). Available in various sizes, styles, and colors, the logos are constructed entirely of chic pressed stud embellishments. We also love that this style offers a “My Grandma Rocks” baby/kid onesie or tee to honor hip and stylish grandmas.

Fabulous Flats

oldnavyflats.gif

Given my obsession with ballet flats, I was thrilled to see StyleBakery’s round up of 8 ballet flats under $60. I immediately ordered the Old Navy Satin Ballet Flats ($19.50), and they're fabulous. Word on these elegant, impressively comfortable flats clearly is spreading. There was plenty of stock when I ordered a pair in chocolate last week; now chocolate is sold out and the two remaining colors are following suit. Click quickly to get a pair!

Meanwhile, if the satin flat ship has sailed in your size, you'll likely find consolation in Old Navy's new Leopard Ballet Flats (shown; $19.50); they don’t appear to offer the cushioned foot bed of the satin flats but the styling is too cute to pass up.

One Stop Style

blablamobile.gif

I certainly appreciate, and have benefited from, the practicality of baby shower registries, but sometimes you stumble on a seriously fabulous shower gift that warrants diverting from more mundane necessities.

Case in point: Pink Olive Boutique's stock of beautiful, vivid blabla knits. Especially impressive is the Small Jungle Mobile (shown; $78), a hand knitted work of art measuring 8” in diameter. We also love the cheerful ladybug booties and hat ($28 each).

Pink Olive just launched in November but this web boutique carries a cool collection of chic baby items, gifts, and stylish warm weather getaway gear. And Pink Olive is offering Boston Mamas readers a little New Year's gift; type “Boston Mamas” in the comments box before checking out to receive free ground shipping on orders over $50. Love My Luckys

lucky_bg.gif

My girlfriend Heidi has a crazy good nose for shopping; neither the high-end boutiques nor the jammed racks at TJ Maxx intimidate her, and she’s dead honest in the dressing room.

So who better to enlist on my recent quest for fabulous jeans? I had had enough of trolling around in inexpensive jeans that fit great the first time around then stretched in odd and unflattering ways, and was prepared to lay out the cash for a fabulously fitting pair of designer jeans (or find the right pair and hunt them down for less on Ebay).

Our first stop was Jasmine Sola, where the staff was helpful and knowledgeable, but the jeans all about a foot too long in the leg (and I’m not that short, at 5 feet, 4¼ inches), and several inches too low in the back. Somewhat dejected (20 pairs later...), I was ready to give up and grab lunch but Heidi encouraged me to pop into Lucky Brand Jeans, and I am thrilled that we did. Lucky offers jeans with shorter inseams and midrise styling so you get a little more coverage while still looking current.

I got the Sundown Jeans (hipster wash; $98) with the short inseam; they are slim through the leg, midrise in back, and offer a bootleg cut. Now who says shopping can't solve problems?

Green Style

gg_tee.gif

Golf is harder than it looks. But apparently it’s even harder to find women’s golf apparel that shows that you've got both your style and athletic game faces on.

Enter girlsgreen, a company founded by a pair of sisters on a mission to infuse style into women's golf apparel through their cool collection of polos and tees. girlsgreen's golf polos are classically structured but updated to incorporate fresh colors and pretty detailing, such as contrast buttons or patterned collars. Their ¾ sleeve fall polo ($49) offers styling and weight perfectly suited for autumn temperatures. Wear it alone or layered over one of the super soft, fine jersey cotton range tees (shown, girlie tee in bubble gum, $24).

These tops are so cute and comfortable that they are terrific for everyday wear or out on the green, even if your golfing ability is limited to mini putt.

Mommy Femme Bot

easyexpressions.jpg

There isn't much sex appeal associated with pumping (I believe Jon let out an extended, definitive, and less than supportive "mooo!" when he first saw me pump), but if you’d like to feel - as a mama pal describes - “vaguely like [an Austin Powers] femme bot” (while pumping efficiently of course), try the Easy Expressions Bustier.

A terrific pump at work solution, the bustier makes hands-free double pumping easy through a strapless, zip-front design. Available in small (32-34), medium (34-36), large (38-40), and extra-large (42-44) for $33.95 (see the Breastfeeding Accessories section of BabyCenter).

The vibrant Green Apple Stem Earrings, made of peridot chips, green apple quartz, and sterling silver ($33; shown) are a fun and versatile pick.

Purchases from You’re Beautiful will make you feel good inside and out; proceeds from each purchase are donated to charity. September’s charity is the Joslin Diabetes Center.

Shipping is free for first class USPS, or you can find Ali’s designs locally at The Beauty Mark (33 Charles Street, Boston) or Boutique Fabulous (1309 Cambridge Street, Cambridge).

Fashion Swap

fashion.jpg

A new season is nearly upon us, a time made complicated by burning fashion desire + limited resources. A while back, my fabulous mama friend Paige hosted a terrific ladies’ event that perfectly suited said fashion desire + limited resources issue.

The event was a fashion swap, before which everyone weeded out their closets and laundered their fashionable, yet now tragically ill-fitting items. Wine and fondue accompanied the initial open browsing period; we then picked numbers out of a hat and, in order, went shopping. The only rules were that we only select one item per go around (so those later in the order had plenty to choose from), and that we tell the other ladies about our super cool find. It was a great way to relax with friends, refurbish wardrobes, and chat about the stories behind some of the clothes.

As it turned out, the event kept on giving. Even after everyone had shopped ‘til they dropped, there remained a pile of great clothing with lots of love and sass left in them. These items were donated to a local Goodwill.

Global Girlfriend

What’s not to love about Global Girlfriend? This online fair trade boutique offers unique handmade items made by women's non-profit programs and cooperatives worldwide. Proceeds support a host of women’s organizations, including Rosie’s Place in Boston.

Global Girlfriend offers apparel and accessories, jewelry, gifts, and décor items. A great pick is the Bold Silk Cosmetic Bag in pink and orange ($12). Made from 100% silk, this bag is handmade by a Southern Indian fair trade group that provides sustainable employment, competitive wages, as well as free meals, health care and education for employees and their children.

Oh Canada!

mapleleaf.jpg

Canada is a great place to be a mama. Everyone has access to health care, typical maternity leave is one year, and homegrown products and resources for babies and moms abound.

One of my Canadian mama pals from graduate school pointed me to a couple of especially cool companies. Milkface.com offers a cute array of nursing clothing (check out the comfy and stylish tops!), nursing supplies, and slings. The cloth diapering products from Motherease.com also get high marks. Designed by a seasoned mom who grew tired of the cumbersome and leaky workings of traditional cloth diapering systems, the patented Motherease design offers a snug and streamlined fit for excellent function and comfort.

Both companies ship to the US and internationally.

Bag Lady

sumdex_laptop.jpg

I knew I was in trouble this past spring when the torrential rains hit and I was left to grovel at the hospital gift store for a plastic bag to protect my laptop.

Although that bag saved my laptop’s life, it left something to be desired functionally. I scoured the market for a protective, stylish laptop tote. I didn't want another black bag, but some of the funkier bags were either too pricey and/or huge. As in, so huge they were practically approaching flight speed on their own. I nearly caved and bought one of the pricier totes, but I decided that I didn't want to be wed to one bag for laptop carry.

I finally hit upon just the right solution. The Sumdex Padded Laptop Sleeve fits laptops 13” x 10” x 1” and is available for $17.99 at Ebags. The sleeve is compact and protective, and so long as my bag du jour is big enough, I can match my bag to outfit instead of vice versa.

Note: At Ebags, click on the “Will my laptop fit?” link in the Product Features section to check for your laptop model’s size compatability.

Avoid Overexposure

el_nursingdress.jpg

I wish I had known about Eva Lillian last summer. We were off to a wedding and I was so excited to wear the stylish little dress that had been hanging with tags in my closet (purchased just before discovering I was pregnant) that I completely neglected how nursing un-friendly the dress was.

The wedding was at the home of the parents of the bride (who I didn’t know well at the time); there was no hotel room to retreat to and I didn’t feel comfortable asking to use the upstairs quarters. So I hunkered down in the living room in a wing chair and tried my best to be discreet while essentially sitting their topless, stylish dress aflutter. The babe, who was having a grand old time at the party, wasn’t the most cooperative partner. She kept pulling off and looking around, completely leaving me hanging.

Eva Lillian, a maternity and nursing boutique, offers the Sexy & Sophisticated Nursing Dress ($89; shown in teal), a nursing dress that creates a shapely silhouette while hiding the parts of your shape you’d rather leave private. In black or teal up to size 18 and machine washable, the comfy factor of this dress also makes it suitable for pregnancy and transition.

Ready to Wear

bravado_tank.jpg

With the right nursing top, you almost can feel as if you are leading a typical, clothed life.

I recently revisited the topic of nursing bras with a friend (who is deep in the throes of nursing for the second time) for a soon-to-be mama pal on the North Shore. Nursing tanks/camisoles are a fabulous, versatile solution. They are great for day (e.g., under cute cardigan or button down to feign appearance of put together new mama), night (i.e., because you’re too tired to change into jammies), and nursing in public (i.e., your sides aren’t exposed as they would be if you had to lift your shirt to get to a nursing bra).

Go with a tank/camisole where the front fabric piece unsnaps and folds down similar to a typical nursing bra (vs. the tanks where you essentially just pull down the top and are completely exposed across the upper chest). The nursing tanks at Target are a steal for around $13.

If you are willing to splurge, Bravado has a new nursing tank with super cute styling (shown above). The Bravado Essential Nursing Bra Tank ($47 at BabyCenter) has said snap/hooks in front, shirring at the chest, and flare at the waist to avoid feeling constrained. It’s available in white, sky blue, and black (I prefer black to hide leaks and stains).

Your Fabulous You

Ah, how I took the Nursing Weight Loss Plan for granted. I was one of the lucky ones whose pregnancy weight fell off quickly, thanks to the voracious infant who nursed her way through the entire 2004 World Series, and otherwise was happiest being walked around and around the block in a sling.

Then a few months post-nursing, many baked goods, and three major clothing crises later I discovered that I had gained 15 pounds. My fabulous husband, who insisted he didn’t even notice the weight gain (perhaps it’s the myopia) suggested that there was one thing I should do and two things I could do. The “should” was to buy myself a pile of clothes that actually fit and made me feel good. The “could’s” were to join him in trying to cut down on the daily desserts, and/or find a fitness outlet.

Second Time's A Charm

As a mama, it’s all about multi-tasking. So when you next hit a crisis inspired by a closet full of pre-mama clothing that no longer fits, head to Second Time Around. This boutique offers new and resale clothing – a place where you can sell your pre-mama clothes and boost up your wardrobe all in one stop. A mama friend can’t say enough good things about this shop’s chic collection and tech savvy approach (you can track the status of consignment pieces through your online account).

Check out Second Time Around’s website or contact one of their many area locations (3 Boston stores, Cambridge, Newton, Wellesley, Needham, Portsmouth, NH) for consignment details; however my mama pal did pass along the general rules that consignment pieces should be: 1) in season; 2) from within the last two years; and 3) from a fairly popular store/designer (although they rarely take anything from the Gap).
