And today, I have something to share that is truly epic in the fun department. Best of April 2013

DIY-bracelets.jpgHappy last day of April! Following my January, February, and March best-of posts, today I'm rounding up the most helpful, insightful, favored-by-the-community posts from April. I hope you enjoy this month's roundup, handy for browsing during lunch, on the pick up line, or wherever! Also, here are a few of my favorite recent pins: a cool way to display Instagram photos, an 8-week half marathon plan, a pretty, ladylike dress I just ordered, DIY bracelets, and book club fodder.

Run the Rainbow, Eat the Rainbow (+ A Giveaway!)

new-balance-rainbow.jpgI dig ChopChop Magazine (yay for cooking with kids!) and New Balance (I just ran in a pair this morning!), so when I heard the two were pairing up for a Run the Rainbow, Eat the Rainbow campaign, I was like, yes, cool -- I am all over getting my kids out and running around and eating a well-balanced plate (especially important to me since Laurel is a vegetarian and Violet has dairy and gluten allergies). I have three things I wanted to share today in relation to this campaign:

Give the Gift of Dignity. And a Gorgeous Scarf Too.

Genet-thumbnail.jpgOne of the most beautiful things about the online space is how incredibly nimble people can be to make awesome things happen. In October when I traveled to Ethiopia as part of the ONE Moms delegation, our team created such an online stir about fashionABLE that they were able to create three new jobs. This past winter, fellow Ethiopia companion and dear friend Gabrielle Blair, of Design Mom and Alt Summit, worked with ONE and fashionABLE to challenge the Alt community to design an exclusive ONE/fashionABLE Mother's Day scarf. And today the beautiful Genet scarf is available for purchase (with free shipping today and tomorrow).

Spring Style Lift: A Rainbow Collection of Flats

spring-style-purple-shoes.jpgI meant to post the last of my four-part spring style lift series (see also, necklaces, scarves, studs!) last week. However, time ran away from me and I also couldn't fathom sharing spring shoe recommendations when the sidewalks were obscured by snow and ice! But the snow is melting, next week is April, and I didn't wear socks the whole time I was in Dallas this past weekend! Here are 8 flats recommendations for you, in an array of colors across the rainbow; perfect for adding pop to an outfit, while still being kid-chasing-friendly!

Spring Style Lift: 8 Statement Necklaces

necklace-banjo-and-bone.jpgMy friend Jess kindly has called me queen of the statement necklace. It's true; I do love accessories for pop, particularly as an easy (and overall more affordable) way to elevate an outfit while sticking to neutrals with clothing. In my third spring style lift post (see also, scarves + studs), I wanted to share 8 statement necklaces. If you've been wary of trying bold jewelry, I say go for it. Or borrow a friend's necklace and give it a go and see how it feels. You'll be amazed by how quickly a bold necklace can finish an outfit and draw admiring looks!

Spring Style Lift: 6 Striking Studs

earrings-jcrewfactory-coral.jpgBecause I'm still operating in daily scarf mode (and plan on being in this mode for a while), my daily earring of choice is studs, both to prevent snags on said scarves and also because Violet can't resist pawing at my ears when I wear dangling earrings. But studs need not be boring! For installment #2 of my spring style series (see #1 here), here are 6 striking studs that are practical (when worn with scarves and alongside toddlers...) but full of pop for every day.

Spring Style Lift: 5 Pretty Scarves

scarf-loft-thumb.jpgTomorrow is the first day of March, which to me means the countdown to spring is officially on! Yay, spring! In anticipation of the good weather, I thought it would be fun to share a little series on spring style...small tweaks for giving a spring lift to your wardrobe. Today, I'll feature scarves, which are an easy way to add a little punch to an outfit while also keeping you cozy during transition temperatures.

Six Reasons Why You Should Try Bangs

bowl-cut.jpgLast Thursday I visited my friend Honey Jo for a long overdue haircut. I adore Honey Jo for many reasons, but on the professional side, I love how confident I feel in her talent. When she asks what I want to do with my hair, I always say, "I'm open -- what do you think would be fun?" And that the results are always fabulous. She's done brilliant color work, chopped my hair short, and last week gave me bangs for the first time since, well, a long time ago. I was thrilled with my hair, but it wasn't until the Instagram picture I posted on Facebook blew up that I thought more about bangs editorially. Here are six reasons why I think you should consider trying them:

Giveaway Goodness: Bogs Footwear

bogs.jpgThough I love living in a part of the country that experiences four seasons, I always miss the ease of flip flop season when it's over, particularly when it's time to transition to, well, anything with laces (especially cumbersome winter boots). A solid solution? Bogs Footwear, purveyors of sturdy (often cheerfully styled) footwear for men, women, and kids. I dig the equestrian styling of the McKenna, which is a 100% waterproof, insulated boot with a leather overlay. Comfy, stylish, and easy to slide into in two seconds while I'm bundling up Laurel and Violet = awesome. And how cool is this? The folks at Bogs kindly are offering a $100 gift certificate for one of you awesome readers! Here's how to enter to win:

A Day of Hope

fashionABLE.jpgI have been a complete jumble of emotions since arriving in Addis Ababa on the ONE Moms mission trip. Yesterday, I was a bit of a wreck after bonding with a child at Mary Joy. But today, despite the painful histories and continued hardships to which I was exposed, I experienced a day of hope. I saw progress and great strides being made to improve the lives of Ethiopian women and their children. I saw it in the form of fashionABLE and the Hamlin Fistula Hospital.

5 Mighty Accessories

ms-benches.JPGA few weeks ago I arrived home from Mighty Summit with my heart full of admiration for the talented women I connected with on the trip, and my head and notebook full of inspiration resulting from conversation and reflection time. I also returned with lovely accessories -- some of which I've been wearing, well, pretty much constantly. I wanted to share them here because they are awesome and I think you will love them too.

Zooligans

zooligans.jpgIn recent months, Violet has made it abundantly clear that she is a full-fledged toddler. Soft-soled shoes were perfect during her early walking months, but now she needs footwear built to withstand her jolly stomping (ideally, in her opinion, through puddles and mud). And boy does she love her Zooligans. Featuring 10 critter designs of sturdy yet flexible construction, these shoes are fantastic for busy toddling (keeping feet dry through said puddles) and are easy for parents to manage -- both via the wide opening and Velcro strap, and because the cute styling seems to negate getting-dressed battles. Vi -- who we refer to as Po (a la Kung Fu Panda) -- always nods a vigorous yes when it's time to put on her panda shoes.

Now, want to win a pair of Zooligans? Here's how:

Giveaway Goodness: Dansko

dansko-rowena.jpgWhen I first learned about Dansko, it was all about the clogs, which I found comfortable when I was making rounds at the hospital during my postdoc, and when I was on my feet all day working retail. And while Dansko clogs have become a footwear staple in those two arenas, it's been fun to see them go beyond the clog. I get tons of mileage out of these stylish miracle boots during the fall and winter, and Dansko also offers other heeled options for those seeking elevation while maintaining a balanced base. And how cool is this? The folks at Dansko kindly have offered to give away a pair of Rowena shoes to one of you awesome readers! Here's how to enter to win:

5 Frump-Free Slippers

slippers-grace-acorn.jpgJon and I have always been a no-shoes household. Partially due to habit for me and also because I'm all about reducing the need to break out a broom or mop (and of course it's handy when you have orally fixated babies roaming around). Since we have hardwood floors that are freezing in the winter and cool the rest of the year round, slippers are a mainstay. I recently tossed my cheap (and admittedly frumpy) slippers and have been looking for a frump-free replacement. I queried on social media and also perused over a dozen online stores looking for inspiration. Though I hoped to include some under $20 picks, there definitely seems to be a correlation between price and frump factor. Here are 5 frump-free slipper options; some are a little spendy, but the cost per wear would probably work out well if you wear slippers daily.

Inspired by Bali

tea-collection-bali.jpgThere are many things I love about Tea Collection -- the quality, the colorways, the details, the fact that most items are offered all the way from baby to size 12 -- and as a designer I especially appreciate their use of global inspiration. I recently had the opportunity to preview some pieces from the new Bali collection and they are just delightful. You can read more about the happy inspiration (how fun does that trip sound?); meanwhile, I wanted to share my favorite picks from the girls and boys collections. Also awesome? The kind folks at Tea Collection are offering a $100 gift certificate to one of you lovely readers! Read on to check out my picks and learn how to win!

The Perfect Dress Style (Nursing or Not)

ralph-lauren-dresses-thumb.jpgWhen Laurel was a baby, one of my rookie nursing mom mistakes was attending a wedding in a regular dress -- meaning, one with an inflexible neckline and a side zipper that basically made it impossible to nurse without undressing. So when I started looking for nursing-friendly dresses to wear to a couple of weddings this year, after being completely underwhelmed by the nursing cocktail dress market, I was thrilled to land on the perfect style -- a dress that looks fabulous, nursing or not.

Kudos for the Rack

nordstrom-rack-hat.jpgJust yesterday I suggested rotating your kids' wardrobes. Today, Jennifer offers inspiration to rotate yours as well:

If you're like me, you are just now swapping out the summer clothes for fall, and my fall stuff definitely needed a few fun updates. When Nordstrom Rack opened recently in Burlington (dangerously close to my 'hood; there also are locations in Danvers and Framingham), I was intrigued. I should say that prior to my recent trip, I had never been to a Nordstrom Rack and I rarely go to Nordstrom's or the mall, because I'm a frugal shopper and tend to camp out at T.J. Maxx and Marshalls. I like to say it's because I am committed to supporting local businesses (their HQ is in Framingham) but it's also because they are just. simply. awesome. stores. I can maximize 10 minutes wedged between a meeting and school pick-up and come out with a great Calvin Klein dress for $49.

Weekly Blueprint

landsend-boys.jpgPer my previous post, welcome to this new series, in which I'll share everything from events to bargain alerts to other ideas and tips that spring to mind as useful and/or fun for the week. After considerable mulling, I decided to call the series Weekly Blueprint, because I think the name conveys a creative presentation of ideas and plans that are, ultimately, posed for your consideration (vs. including the term "to do," which suggests that I think you must do whatever it is I'm suggesting!). Enjoy, and please do drop me a line if you have suggestions for a future Weekly Blueprint!

Chic, Eco-Friendly Sweats

activewearusa-ggo-boxtop.jpgToday, Jules shares a review of some eco-friendly fitness apparel from ActivewearUSA. Read on for her review, as well as to learn how to win a $50 gift certificate to ActivewearUSA:

Believe me, I'm well aware that it's easy to let fashion fall to the wayside as a mom. I love fashion, but I avoid wearing silk or cashmere around the kids. If I'm going out, I walk around in a towel until about 17 seconds before I'm going to leave the house to up my chances of walking out the door stain-free. And during the week, the reality is that as a mom, gym rat, and laundry/diaper aficionado, I live in my sweats. So I was thrilled to test out some organic fitness apparel from ActivewearUSA and find that they're chic, comfortable, and feel like they will last forever.

Tickled by Tea

tea-collection.jpgI've known about Tea Collection for a while (I still regret that I never got around to purchasing from their Korea collection a while back), but it wasn't until recently that I had a chance to see their products. And while the clothes are really lovely out of the box, they move to the realm of tremendously awesome once placed on real little bodies. I recently had the opportunity to style some pieces from Tea's fall collection and was struck not only by the quality and design, but by the ability to create really cute coordinated (but not overly matchy match) sibling outfits (read: perfect for family photos or general everyday cuteness). Read on to check out the coordinated outfits I assembled, as well as to learn how to be one of three winners to receive a $100 Tea gift certificate!

Giveaway Goodness: Gilt Groupe

gilt-children.jpgEver since signing on last year as one of Gilt Groupe's inaugural Gilt-y Moms (a small advisory group), I've been more than a little addicted to their flash sale site, which is replete with stylish finds of all kinds. (Recent awesome women's purchase? A Kate Spade tote. One of their current awesome kids sales? Haba toys. New category I really need to try soon? Gilt Taste. And so on...) And right now Gilt Children is in the middle of a summer spectacular on their Facebook page, through which you can read and share summer tips and ideas. So far conversations have covered traditions and travel tips, and this week's theme is play dates. I've been picking up all sorts of handy nuggets of wisdom over the last couple of weeks!

Super Cute Swimsuits

lands-end-geo-print.jpgThough I typically am a fan of bikinis, given that I'm hitting swimsuit season about three months postpartum, I wanted a little more coverage this season. Just the other week I was looking remorsefully at my bikini collection (which includes a couple of cute bikinis I bought at Lands' End last year) when Lands' End reached out and asked if I'd like to try out some swimsuits for editorial consideration. And I'm thrilled to report that there's just as much cuteness in the full coverage suits as there are in the bikinis. Here are two great picks to consider:

12 Bits of Web Awesomeness

i-heart-massachusetts.jpgHello everyone -- I hope you have fantastically relaxing plans for the Memorial Day long weekend! We're going to be staying local and keeping it low key since June will be a bit crazy, but at the very least, yummy food and fun and games with Laurel and Violet are on the docket. Crocs Go Chameleon

crocs-chameleon.jpgEver since Laurel became upwardly mobile, I couldn't help but notice the proliferation of Crocs on kids, but Laurel never showed much interest (save the collecting potential of jibbitz) due to her desire for all things girly. And apparently it's amazing what a flower cut out and the right colors can do. I recently received a pair of Crocs Chameleons Shirley Girls to test out with Laurel and she pretty much wore them for three days straight out of the box. Comfortable (Laurel immediately tore down the sidewalk as soon as she put them on) and girly, the additional hit feature of these shoes is that they change color in the sun. Initially white, within seconds of sun exposure on Friday, Laurel's shoes turned violet (which she of course loves, given our little Violet). And even during the weekend's overcast weather, we found that the shoes still turned color, just not as deep.

Four Pretty & Lovely Things

joslyn1-michelle-armas.jpgI met Joslyn Taylor of Simple Lovely last year in New York City at an event to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, and was thrilled to reconnect with her awesomeness at Altitude Design Summit this year. Joslyn is so elegant and has wonderful (seemingly effortless!) style, so for today's four favorites guest post, I asked Joslyn to share four pretty and lovely things to help moms forget the giant mess that home has turned into (when I asked Joslyn to guest post I envisioned being surrounded by soiled burp cloths, breast pump supplies, and take out containers...).

nine-west-flats.jpgMy friend Lindsay Ferrier not only is a fantastic, funny writer (her personal blog Suburban Turmoil makes me laugh and cry, and her style blog She's Still Got It has inspired more than a few shopping sprees), but she always looks fantastically put together while being totally approachable. Old Navy Cute Alert

OldNavy_polkadotkimono.jpgNow that we've hit five weeks until baby, in addition to the name thing (which we're working on thanks to you all!), I'm also getting lots of nudges about nesting. It's true -- as organized as I am about so many things in life, we have done nothing in the nesting department. I figure there's plenty of time to sort it out, and perhaps I'll feel inspired following the baby shower my friend Heidi is throwing me this weekend. When Heidi offered to host the event, I asked for a secondhand/recycled shower since: a) I'm an eco-geek; and b) so many of my mom friends are done making babies and are eager to pass things along. However, I'm also planning to stop at Old Navy -- both to pick up any last minute needs for the baby, and also some spring things for Laurel. Fantastic Maternity Tights

sara-blakely-assets-maternity-tights.jpgI love wearing dresses, but clearly, going bare legged isn't the greatest option if getting from point A to B involves going outside in frigid winter weather. So I was thrilled to find -- in advance of heading to Alt Summit -- Sara Blakely's ASSETS maternity tights. Though slimming features weren't my concern, I was drawn to these tights given Blakely's Spanx reputation, and clearly, Blakely knows how to deliver the goods. The tights are affordable, supportive, true to size, and feature a remarkably comfortable pregnancy panel (I also bought a pair of cheapo back up tights and they were nowhere near as well made). At Alt, while I did go bare legged in a dress one evening (when getting from points A to B/C/D were all within the hotel), I wore the ASSETS tights another night out with a purple dress with cool metal accents and gray peep toe booties. I felt fantastic. And fantastically comfortable. Even after indulging in too many finger foods.

Lee's Double Tough Knees

lee-jeans.jpgToday, Heather shares a handy denim (and money!) saving solution:

My active 3.5 year old boys have been blowing through the knees of their jeans well before the rest of the denim shows wear. And while ripped jeans may be fashionable, my boys are taking it to the extreme! I thus was happy to find that Lee makes a reasonably priced jean with a "double tough" reinforced knee, and I was even happier that they come with an inner adjustable waist to accommodate growth. The jeans are really holding up great and I have been able to find them at Sears and Kohl's. So while I still cringe with every jump, climb, fall, and slide, at least I no longer have to add new jeans to my shopping list!

Dear Boston Mamas: Maternity Clothes Shopping on a Budget

mighty-aphrodite.gifToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from CM via e-mail:

Project Headband

creativity-for-kids-fashion-headbands.jpgLaurel recently has gotten into headbands (which is great because her fine hair is prone to flyaways that get stuck in food and art projects), and we've struck out on a couple of attempts to find a flower headband she likes. I was about to jump down the Etsy rabbit hole (or hit the craft store and warm up my glue gun) when we stumbled upon this fashion headbands kit. Medical Accessory Alert

laurens-hope-robot-medical-id.jpgToday, Jennifer shares a couple of great resources for medical alert tracking and cool ID accessories for grownups and kids:

I love jewelry and accessories...I mean, I really, really love them. So when a recent medical issue resulted in my need for a medic ID bracelet (I have an adult onset seizure disorder controlled by meds -- or as I like to say, I'm just a little bit electric), the diagnosis left me with a serious accessory challenge: where do I get a cute medic alert bracelet? Second Trimester (Or Not!) Fall Fashion

bcbg-max-azria-tunic.jpgOne thing that's clear about pregnancy is that bodies grow very differently (when in doubt, do not ask!). I "popped" late with Laurel, and it's been similar this go around. At almost 17 weeks, though I'm definitely feeling thicker around the middle, I'm still wearing my regular clothes; as of two weeks ago, I simply looked a little full of korma and last week I started sporting a little bump that's still not evident in regular clothes. Through the second trimester, transition pieces are key, and I'm all about mining one's existing wardrobe, particularly since in the second trimester you may not be ready for full blown maternity clothing. Here are my five favorite regular wardrobe pieces that are serving me immensely well in transition. I've put together a few cute looks based on these pieces and all of these looks are non-maternity wear, so even if you aren't pregnant you can enjoy them. Today I'm focusing on casual clothing and plan on doing a dressy/work roundup soon.

Two Local Stylish Finds

lady-luxe.jpgToday, parent educator Hetti Wohlgemuth of Alphabet Soup 4 Parents takes a departure from parenting advice to recommend two stylish local finds:

Given my apparent talent for spilling black coffee, chocolate ice cream, and ketchup on myself, I don't like spending lots of money on clothing. For me, it's not worth it to ruin expensive clothes and it's good to tighten the spending belt when a bad economy threatens us. That said, I still like to shop, dress well, and look professional. Here are two Boston area shops to try that won't break the bank.

Dansko's Miracle Boots

dansko-gitte-tigers-eye-patent.jpgFor probably the last five years, I've anticipated boot season with excitement and hope, and ultimately have come out the other side disappointed. I know this may sound a tad melodramatic but it's true. My typical ritual is this: I fawn over online and print fall boot fashion spreads, hit the stores loaded with energy, and leave utterly deflated because everything I try on makes my calves feel like sausages. And it's not as if I have super large calves, just some little muscles from running and yoga. Nonetheless, all boots to date have suffocated. Until Dansko that is. Read on to learn more Dansko's kid's collection and "miracle boots" (my name for them), as well as to learn how to win a pair of Dansko shoes for you and your child!

The Magic of Gap

gap-lightweight-wool-blazer.jpgI must admit that I've been a tad "meh" about Gap clothing for some time. I primarily shop online and though I realize the in-store experience is important, I haven't felt particularly motivated to head to the store after browsing periodically from the comfort of my home. Yes, I'm a big fan of mix and match basics, but their collection often struck me as largely basic. I will now, however, look at Gap's offerings with a whole new perspective, thanks to a recent outing with one of their stylists.

Birthday Giveaway: Stella & Dot

stella-and-dot.jpg Normally I'm not an offer to host a trunk show type of gal, but after seeing some of the products from my friend (and BM contributor) Paige's Stella & Dot stylist gig, I totally wanted to see more. So I recently hosted a trunk show for Paige, and it was an utterly lovely morning that involved chilling with friends, enjoying yummy food and drink, and ogling beautiful trays of jewelry (in a boutique shopping, totally non-pushy sales way). Stella & Dot covers a mix of styles, including looks that range from classic to edgy to girly to elegant; these earrings and this ring are totally making their way into my shopping cart this week (also note: the earrings I purchased as teacher gifts at the end of the school year were a huge hit). And as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Paige generously is gifting one lucky winner with their choice of Stella & Dot goods up $100 in value. marika-miracles.jpgAfter falling off my fitness wagon for a few weeks (amid injury, dreadful heat, and end of school year chaos), I recently found a way to get on a summer fitness regimen. And if I can do it, you can too -- and why not rock a new routine in some of Marika's new "miraculous" fitness gear? This collection of fitness basics was designed to wick away moisture while supporting, slimming, and contouring so you can look your best while you're, well, working on looking your best. And as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Marika generously is gifting one lucky winner with a pair of miracle capris + a miracle sport bra ($75 value)! Birthday Giveaway: Jute and Jackfruit

jute-and-jackfruit.jpgI love when I visit a new website that is easy to navigate and loaded with cool eco-finds and learn that it is based locally. Such was the case with Jute and Jackfruit, an organic and socially conscious women's e-boutique based in Arlington that sources primarily from budding female designers and women's artisan groups and cooperatives from around the world. While some of their clothing includes bold pattern-blocking, I think a look composed of some of their soft hued pieces paired with a punchy recycled material clutch or fair trade, hand-loomed scarf would make for an awesome head to toe eco-look. And as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Jute and Jackfruit generously is gifting one lucky winner with a $75 gift certificate! Simply check out the rules below and leave a comment on this giveaway by Monday, July 12, to enter to win.

Birthday Giveaway: Moody Mamas

moody-mamas.jpgI loved being pregnant with Laurel (I was one of those annoying people who experienced a blissfully smooth pregnancy), but I wasn't wild about the limited fashion options at that time. Luckily, maternity style now is a cinch, thanks to collections such as those by Moody Mamas. Including a range of apparel options, I'm particularly keen on the ease of dresses (maternity or not), and Moody Mamas offers both a budget line via Target and a collection of day and night dresses through a partnership with Project Runway phenom Christian Siriano; the cowl neck jersey dress (pictured) is one of my faves. And as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Moody Mamas generously is gifting one lucky winner with a $100 gift certificate! Simply check out the rules below and leave a comment on this giveaway by Thursday, July 8, to enter to win.

Weekend Reading

radish-pesto-wicked-tasty-harvest.jpgI recently started helping my web savvy friend Alli Worthington with a project. BlissReads is a collection of websites through which curators (like yours truly) share awesome content. I've been remiss in my link roundups so I thought I'd start sharing what I've been curating for BlissReads. Check out my commentary on these awesome posts: recipes for radish leaf pesto, coconut milk cupcakes with coconut cream cheese frosting (swoon!), and coconut tres leches cake (double swoon!); how to embellish your own tank top, give old lamps new life, and make your own bubble mix (and gigantic bubbles); and roundups for 10 fabulous ideas for bunk beds and 32 birthday party themes for kids. Enjoy!

The Cutest Helmets Ever

polarn-o-pyret.jpgThe bold and cheerful clothing of Swedish outfitter Polarn O. Pyret has been on my radar for some time, but it wasn't until recently that I had a chance to check out some samples in person. And I'm happy to report that Polarn O. Pyret delivers the cuteness and the quality. Offering an eye popping collection of clothing for babies, kids, and expecting moms (totally shopping this collection if I ever go that road again), I am -- not surprisingly -- most drawn to their 100% organic cotton collection. Well constructed to endure plenty of wear and laundering, I find the nature-inspired patterning of the Gunila Axen body suit + matching helmet particularly awesome. Besides, every baby really ought to have a cute little helmet for their cute little noggin.

Get Up and thredUP

thredup.jpgAs much as I love shopping for pretty new things for Laurel, I'm also keen on finding pretty used things for her, given my eco and minimalist parenting approach. And that's why I dig thredUP, a locally headquartered website that allows parents across the country to swap kids clothes easily, inexpensively, and from the comfort of home (literally, you don't need to leave your home for any of the steps). Read on for my review of thredUP, as well as to learn how to be one of three winners to receive a thredUP Pro Membership:

Cute, Decent Coverage Bikinis

lands-end-aquaterra.jpgOne thing that used to curb my shopping at Lands' End was that they never offered flat percentage discounts + free shipping. And whether they started listening to consumer complaints (admittedly, I grumbled about this issue on Twitter at least once or twice), or simply decided to jump on the bandwagon with all the other online retailers, it's all good: LE has been offering lots of online deals of late. And while I recently took advantage of one of said deals, in addition to stocking up on Laurel's tankinis and action sandals, I was thrilled to find that this year's collection includes some cute women's bikinis with decent coverage.

Love These Links: (Mostly) DIY Edition

alpha-mom-plantable-paper.jpgHere are some lovely links that caught my eye this week around the web. Clearly I've got DIY projects (and travel) on my mind. I love this pretty plantable paper project from Alpha Mom (shown) and this sweet paper corsage tutorial from Make and Takes. These homemade bath bombs from Petit Elefant would make a cute gift for mom or a girlfriend. If you're feeling really crafty and like sewing (and love embellished tops as much as I do), try these DIY embellished tops from BlogHer. And it's not DIY, but since I'm the minimalist mama, I can't help but love these minimalist travel tips from Gwen Bell. Happy reading!

Acero Studio

acero-studio.jpgLast weekend Laurel and I had a fantastic time at the Down:2:Earth sustainable living expo. Laurel loved the face painting, games, snacks, and garden displays, and I was especially thrilled to see many green companies I have featured (Boston Organics, Bum Boosa, Diaper Lab, Go GaGa, Sakura Bloom, Seventh Generation, snackTAXI, Stonyfield) present, and also to discover new ones, such as Acero Studio. Mom-owned and based out of New Bedford, artist Anne Wolfe creates lovely vintage-styled graphics then hand prints them onto a delicious array of microwave and dishwasher safe ceramics and porcelain jewelry.

Dear Boston Mamas: Cute Local Tees

hoosier-magnolia.jpgToday's Dear Boston Mamas question comes from Perri via Facebook:

Baby girl turns 1 this week and I wanted to find a cute T-shirt or onesie for her to wear on her special day. I saw a couple of cute (non-cheesy) items in Chasing Fireflies but unfortunately do not have time to order. Any ideas of local shops that might have some fun, cute, sassy, non-cheesy birthday gear?

Stay Put Slippers

kayas-kloset.jpgAs the mom of a sock-resistant child in a “no shoes” house (a rule stemming from my Asian upbringing and immense distaste for increased need to vacuum), slippers are a must. And if you want cute slippers for kids and grownups, check out Kaya’s Kloset. Available for feet big and small (including organics), local mama Johanna Parker offers an amazing array of handcrafted baby shoes and kid/adult slippers featuring nonskid soles to prevent crash and burns and elasticized ankles so the slippers stay put. Though Laurel shuns socks, she loves her prettily patterned Kaya’s Kloset slippers; apparently part of their appeal is their lightweight-ness (“They’re so light it feels like I’m not wearing anything!”). Which means she keeps them on. Which makes me really happy.

Now, want to win a pair of Kaya’s Kloset shoes? Here’s how:

Sensitive Stride Rites

stride-rite-srt-liam.jpgIt's no secret that I’m a bit obsessed with kids wearing properly fitting, comfy shoes. And what I dig about Stride Rite is that though they are a household name, they continued to push the fit and comfort envelope; most recently through their Sensory Response Technology collection. The structural support, comfort, and flexibility are evident if you handle the shoe, but the hidden coolness is that these shoes feature a built in sensory feedback system in the sole to help kids feel the ground better, which helps reduce trips and falls. Also no small matter: these shoes are super cute (I especially love the hip styling for boys) and use eco-friendly materials.

“Now that you know what shapes to look for to suit your figure, it’s time for some trend navigation. But you have to know your comfort level. Buffalo Exchange

buffalo-exchange.pngDavis Square’s bargain retail profile recently kicked it up a notch with the addition of Buffalo Exchange (on the same block as Poor Little Rich Girl and Good Will). Giving national chain a good name, Buffalo Exchange allows for direct sale or trade of used clothing and accessories, and carries both classic pieces (such as the J. Crew print dress I scored for $23.50...sweet!) and quirkier ones. The two-level store currently offers more goods for women (including rows upon rows of shoes downstairs), though there are some racks for men. Laurel loves treasure hunting with me in Davis; she only requests that this and other stores start carrying used kid’s clothing.

Birthday Giveaway: Heart & Stone Jewelry

heart-and-stone.jpgOne reason I've never purchased a traditional mother's ring or necklace (such as the seven-stone mother’s ring my siblings and I gifted my mom on her 60th birthday, when she was definitely done) is the permanence factor. And this is why I dig the chic flexibility of locally owned Heart & Stone Jewelry. Offering personalized necklaces and rings handcrafted from recycled silver, Heart & Stone’s necklaces allow you to expand your collection of personalized charms and gems infinitely, whether you'd like to symbolize your growing family, beloved pets, momentous dates, or favored symbols and gems. Having never stepped into an AJWright prior to the blogger tour and shopping event, I didn’t have the same experienced eye for layout and inventory as I did walking into the T.J. Treasure Hunting, Part I

tjmaxx.jpgThere’s something to be said for paying for an experience; say, first class airline tickets, a meal at a chic restaurant that will stow luggage while you shop (as did Stephanie’s on Newbury, where I took a visiting friend yesterday), or spa services that create a truly calming environment (compared to the bargain nail salon where I bang away on my Blackberry so I can work while getting a pedicure). But when it comes to clothing and accessories, generally speaking, I’m all about getting the best bargain. And that’s why I was intrigued to learn about treasure hunting at T.J. “Last summer, my daughter - then 2 years old - would reject hats and sunglasses with an impatient gesture, leaving me to fret about sunburn and sunstroke and retinal damage and every other possible sun-related ill that could befall my very fair-skinned family. This year, with summer slowly beginning to show itself, she seems more open to the idea of covering up from the rays. So, I was happy to discover MFS Eyewear, which makes sunglasses for babies and kids (up to 12 years old) that not only look fun and can withstand rough treatment, but also protect from UV radiation.

Memory, Motherhood, & Celebration

tiffany-pendant.bmpToday, Kate shares how she chose to celebrate her awakening to motherhood:

“The first two years of motherhood were unexpectedly hard for me. I say unexpected because I had sailed through pregnancy and fully expected motherhood to be an enhancement to an already full and happy life, not a fundamental or in some ways jarring change. It sounds naive to write that now, but at the time I was caught totally unprepared for the nagging sense of sadness, emotional disequilibrium, and whispering worry that I was an inadequate and insufficiently loving mother.

And if you’re looking for unique jewelry that will complete your outfit and likely make for a conversation piece, check out eNVe Designs. Crafted by Boston area mom Ngan Vuong (strangely enough, another fellow psychology Ph.D. turned artist), eNVe’s pieces either translate classic elegance (via pearls and silver) or funky and modern (via mixed metals and stones). An extra bonus is that her signature necklaces are designed to be worn in multiple ways (photo examples are shown on the site), allowing you to get great mileage out of each piece.

Avon's Got A Brand New Bag

avon_pockets.gifI must admit that I’ve long been under the impression that Avon is just about cosmetics, but they’ve apparently branched well beyond; in addition to wellness products, kid’s décor, and even man gifts, they offer an affordable line of handbags, including this Pockets Galore Bag. It’s big enough to hold all of your (non-diaper bag) essentials, while keeping a trim and trendy silhouette. Want to learn how to win this or another Avon bag*? Here’s how:

Track Back In Style

capeclogs.bmpAs a parent, sometimes I find it absurdly challenging to get out the door in one try, and since we’re a shoes-off household, tracking back through the house to fetch forgotten mittens, lunch box, stuffed animal, etc. is much easier with slip on shoes. And these days, I find that I don’t mind the track backs as much thanks to Cape Clogs. Great for every day or as a welcome upgrade to the sneaker + suit commuter look, these Swedish orthopedic clogs are classically structured in make but not the least bit dowdy in look, available in a variety of cheerful and feisty patterns (such as this fierce leopard) for women and kids. I still aim to make it out of the house in one try, but on the days I don't, these cute kicks make the track backs easy.

Jammie Time

elephantcouture.jpgOne of my favorite things about fall is the return of snuggly jammies, and Éléphant’s pajama sets – part of a new collection of 100% natural fiber clothing and toys for kids – are downright cozy and delicious. Éléphant’s aesthetic is simple, yet conveys a distinctly hip, earthy point of view. Hip For Halloween

babylegs_punkin.jpgIn our house, talk of fall inevitably leads to talk of Halloween, which leads to my fretting over ways to enhance Laurel’s costume for warmth on what's typically a very chilly and spooky night. Luckily, there's a super cute and functional solution from BabyLegs, the folks who made leg (and arm) warmers cool again. I got a sneak peek at their Punkin’ and Itsy Bitsy designs (shown here; forthcoming on their site), and as with the rest of their stylish collection (which includes a delicious organics line), these warmers are great for accessorizing, protecting crawling knees, and foregoing tights for easier diapering and potty trips. Tees With Tatts

andyandbella.bmpIn addition to popsicles and plenty of park time, one of Laurel’s favorite things about summer is the ability to cover herself (and me, and anyone else who will let her) with temporary tattoos. The tattoos usually don’t go with a given outfit, but now it’s possible to coordinate a trendy look with andy&bella’s tees with tatts. This line includes a series of intricately designed vintage tattoo-style images printed on super comfy 100% cotton tees (sizes 2 – 12) and coordinating temporary tattoos. Shirring & Strutting

landsend.bmpLands’ End is my go-to source for Laurel’s summer tankinis and action sandals, but I also dig that they offer women’s swimsuits with a few magic details to inspire beach strutting confidence. Offering suits for all shapes and sizes, their Slender Suits - which create sleekness via slimming fabric and shirring - are particularly handy to cope with residual winter excess. And the ability to search for suits by body shape helps take the guesswork out of which styles will flatter your rectangular or triangular proportions. The collection does tend toward conservative and I’d love to see LE eventually work more modern prints, but when in doubt, you can fall back on black, or opt for a pretty classic pattern such as the Damask Floral.

Got Your Crack Covered

hipt.jpgWhether it’s a function of post-winter pounds or running in circles with mamas who lack the time to run for real, I’ve recently found myself amidst several episodes of collective discontent over muffin tops (as in, the unwanted roll that hangs over your jeans). To negotiate this problem, as well as that of rear crack or undie exposure, I’ve been recommending the hip-T. This shaped band of comfy stretch cotton covers the potential vulnerable zone between your outfit's top and bottom while creating a stylish, layered look. Inspired Knits

totoknits.jpgMamas need to stick together, and former New Yorker Erin Brennan Allan and Nairobi native Mary Wambui are helping women do just that through Toto Knits. Featuring unbelievably cute hand knit sweaters and blankets for kids 3 months to 6T, the collection is ethically produced from start to finish. The cotton and wool are locally grown, spun, and dyed, then knit by a group of Kenyan women - many single mothers – who knit as a means to earn a living in an empowering, family friendly, and flexible environment. Their Safari Animal sweaters – all knit with little tails on the back – are particularly inspired.

Party to Playground

vincent1.jpgLaurel recently has grown particularly opinionated and independent regarding fashion; she wants to pick her outfit from the skivvies forward and dress herself. And while this new level of independence takes more time (particularly compared to my habit of dressing her based on what's on top of her clean, unfolded laundry pile), the slowdown is made up for by the ease with which she now chooses her shoes.

Seeing Green

seekairun.jpgSpring's sprouts may be taking their sweet time to appear, but thanks to See Kai Run's spring line you'll be seeing green in no time. Particularly spring fever worthy are their deliciously bold, jelly bean green Bent (shown) and ladylike, leafy green tulip-adorned Hannah shoes. And aside from being fresh and fun in look, these kicks get top marks for construction. The leather is super soft, the soles sturdy but flexible, the footbeds cushy, and – hugely important in my book – the toe box appropriately roomy for chubby little feet. These Velcro closure shoes are easy to get on, but they’re so cute and comfy that your kid likely won’t want to take them off.

Style Lift from the LOFT

anntaylorloft.jpgOne challenge for pregnant working women is finding maternity clothing that is stylish and well constructed, but doesn’t break the bank. When I was pregnant with Laurel and hunting for reasonably priced work pieces, I saw a troubling amount of highly flammable polyester construction that was ill reminiscent of the marching band and color guard (yes, color guard) uniforms I wore in high school. Designers are, thankfully, catching on to the need for affordable maternity style, and among the newcomers is the recently launched Ann Taylor LOFT maternity line.

clarks.jpgThese days, kid’s fashion can be so fabulous that I often find myself saying, “I wish they made that in grown-up sizes!” So it's refreshing to see that trend in reverse, as Clarks translates their grown-up shoe know-how - they design comfy shoes that span casual to dressy - to Clarks Kids. Available in sizes for new or seasoned walkers (ages 0-5), the line is particularly noteworthy for featuring soles that are grippy yet flexible and footbeds that are deliciously cushy and comfy. The collection's aesthetic is fairly traditional, with a generally sporty look for boys or floral/Mary Jane style for girls (i.e., no appliqué critters), but these shoes will easily take your tot from playground to party, just as a lot of their grown-up shoes can.

Say Yes to Mess

beansoup.jpgWhether you love the messy, tactile nature of art, kitchen, and garden projects with kids, or need a little inspiration to say yes to mess, check out Beansoup’s amazing aprons. Offered in a variety of beautifully patterned, machine washable styles to suit toddlers and kids (and soon, grownups too!), I’m especially crazy about the Cobbler’s Aprons. These 40’s inspired smocks are both functional – featuring 3 generous front pockets perfect for little tools – and chic. When the apron's not busy protecting your kid’s clothes, it's cute enough to double as part of their outfit.

Designer Inspired

baghaus.jpgWhile generally I believe in investing in key wardrobe pieces, one area that challenges me is bags. I love having a variety of styles to go with different outfits, and I just can’t stomach the idea of picking a single bag to drop a fortune on. And then when one of Laurel’s milk cups exploded inside the one designer tote I do own (a gift from a very generous friend…), I decided to look for alternatives.

Food Fight

wonderwoman.jpgFor the most part, your kid probably isn’t trying to pick a food fight, but mealtimes sure can feel that way sometimes. And to serve the need for repeated tee changes with a dose of humor and sass, there’s food fight’s impressive menu of trendy onesies and tees for babies and kids. We especially dig their My Mommy is Wonder Woman unisex long-sleeved tee. This comfy, screen-printed thermal is a great weight for spring (or layered in chillier temps), and tells it like it is. You deserve props for scaling – among other things – superhuman piles of laundry.

Pick of the Patch

handpickedpumpkin.jpgThere’s a lot of cool indie kid’s clothing out there, but Hand Picked Pumpkin’s designs (for 3 - 24 month-olds) are destined to rise to the top of your laundry pile. Choose from ready made clothing or build from scratch; simply select a garment style and size, then decide on fabulous fabric options using HPP's garment design tool. And if you can just pick one item, grab a hoodie. This piece is constructed of snugly, solid contrasting cottons for the body and lining, then accented smartly with patterned fabrics on the pocket, hood, and hood liner. The hoodie isn’t meant to be reversible, but it very well could be; it’s gorgeous whether right side or inside out.

Little Uni

littleuni.bmpI’d venture to guess that for most of us, photos from childhood make it clear that soothing color palettes and stylish lines in kid’s fashion are a thing of the present (yes, I have photo evidence of a particularly woeful chartreuse floral shirt/blue plaid shorts combo, circa 1979). And little uni is decidedly part of this present. Their chic graphic appliqués come in a variety of favorite shapes set on soft cotton baby tees and one-pieces. Each design features a defining word, or you can personalize your favorite appliqué with your babe’s name.

Tread Softly

robeez.jpgI’ll admit that I have a bit of a shoe problem (Jon’s still wondering where I plan on wearing a pair of snakeskin peep-toe pumps purchased in December…), and the evolution of kiddie shoes has created a whole new problem for me. Case in point: this month, Robeez broke from their soft-soled baby shoe mold to launch their Tredz line. Including a dizzyingly cute collection of sweet styles for girls and sporty looks for boys, these kicks are lightweight, easy to get (and stay put) on chubby little feet, and feature super cushy insoles and flexible, non-slip soles. These stylish shoes will withstand plenty of exploration on the tot lot, while allowing your babe to tread softly.

Glass Treasures

lalo.bmpToday, Kate reports on a local purveyor of glass treasures:

“With the holidays long gone and as the grey of winter persists, finding ways to keep shine and brightness in life becomes all the more important. Colorful accessories can add sparkle and happiness, and a small store in the Back Bay offers a beautiful selection of vibrant glass jewelry - rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, hair ornaments - that is both fun and elegant without being overly expensive. Lalo Treasures is a treat for the eyes: the cozy store is bright, welcoming, and colorful. Not to mention that Lalo's blend of materials makes for unusually durable jewelry (customers are encouraged to try on anything they want), making it terrific for moms with babes equally drawn to pretty baubles.”

Polliwalks Rock

polliwalks.jpgI’ve basically been indifferent to the love/hate Crocs debate, but when I first laid eyes on Polliwalks, I fell squarely in the love camp. And they’re even cuter - not to mention fun and functional - in real life. Available in four animal styles in a variety of cheerful colors, these clogs are lightweight, easy to slip on and off, and comfy (Laurel says). And each style features cute treads that leave animal prints during a walk on muddy or wet turf. Fancy But Not Fussy

princesscloset.gif

Some princesses seem born and some made (my adorable girly-girl-from-day-one niece and tomboy-turned-butterfly-princess daughter offer good data here); either way, girls will find plenty of fancy at My Princess Closet.

As someone who prefers cute comfort, I’ll admit that part of the head to toe princess thing I don’t get is the itchy fabric factor. Luckily, for those who desire comfort and girly flounce, there's MPC’s Princess Ballerina Onezies. Available in lavender or pink, the 100% cotton bodysuit has an organza tutu and satin ribbon band cleverly sewn around the middle. Getting baby holiday fancy without them knowing there’s a fuss will be a breeze by pairing this onesie with cute patterned tights and a pretty knit cardigan.

Beyond Undies

Raise your hand if you’ve ever dressed your kid in a fabulous holiday outfit that got covered in spills or spit up before you even got to grandma’s house.

As cute as fancy clothing is, for holiday travel, basic layers (and backups) are key. And in this vein, I was surprised to learn that there's more to Hanes than undies. In addition to parent resources, mom features (this month Travel Channel co-host Tracy Gallagher shares holiday travel survival tips), and kid activities, they’ve got a full line of comfy, inexpensive mix and match basics, including some impressively stylish tops. We especially dig the layered look tee collection for girls (shown, Hoot Parade) and the graphic octopus tee for boys.

A Treat for Claustrophobic Feet

As I’ve been trolling for fall shoes, I’ve come to realize that I have something of a case of foot claustrophobia. I want barely there and easy on/off (the latter being a mom essential actually), and I’m already lamenting the end of flip-flop season. With athletic footwear, however, there’s little choice but to lace up, and thanks to a review partnership with The Parent Bloggers Network and Ryka, I’ve had the chance to test a couple of pairs of Ryka sneakers and identify which ones do and do not make my feet hyperventilate, so to speak.

A Color Party is Born

rainbowtee.gif

What a difference a year makes. After learning about Birthdays Without Pressure this year, I vowed that Laurel’s future fêtes would be low key and low attended (i.e., me, Laurel, Jon, and likely Auntie Sha-Sha). But in contrast to a baby/toddler, a 3-year-old knows who her friends are and wants to eat cake with them. So the Color Party was born; low key in that we didn’t hire performers or ponies, a bit chaotic prep-wise (note to self & readers: do not schedule oral surgery the day before throwing a party), and a truly wonderful gathering of friends and family. I’ll post on fab Color Party craft and food ideas soon; meanwhile, I had to share this cool find before they run out. We didn’t bother with gifts, save this amazing groovy t-shirt from Boden. It’s available in guitar, owl, peace & love, or – perfect for Laurel – rainbow appliqués.

One Time At Band Camp

bandcamp.gif

Although motherhood typically results in style deterioration, the combination of making it past the 100%-cotton-spit-up-absorbent-baby-care-uniform-phase, and working at one of Boston’s esteemed, male-dominated, and decidedly fashion challenged universities made me even more committed to looking stylish and feminine. So while I’m far from an ideal wardrobe (due to spending guilt and pickiness), I have, since becoming a mommy, become obsessed with pretty details, great shoes, and color, even at the casual level. But if your mommy sweats are getting you down, don’t fret. Today, our friends at The Parent Bloggers Network are offering a fun opportunity to step up your schlumpy mom outfit with a fantastic Coach bag.

Bloomin' Tots Hats

maggiesrose.gif

I have not an ounce of Brit in my bones, but boy do I love the look of a plucky, pretty hat. And having a daughter offers plenty of fodder for fun hat finds, the latest being the bloomin’ tots hats by the family run business, Maggie’s Rose.

Hand crocheted of soft, stretchy cotton and embellished with big blooms, these make-a-back-to-school-statement hats will attract attention wherever you go. Laurel has the chocolate tots hat trimmed with black; the cap is cute and cozy, and the chocolate bloom (with red jeweled center) makes a fun yet dramatic statement. Laurel is crazy about this hat, and when she wore it to school for the first time the other week, she stopped every teacher we saw on our way in saying, “Look at my pretty flower hat!” And in unsolicited situations, the response from strangers has been "Look at that pretty flower hat!" High praise, indeed.

Equal Opportunity

littlethieves.gif

Boys often get the short end of the fashion stick, but that tide is turning, and part of the wave includes the designers behind Bunny and Bee and Little Thieves.

We especially love the high-flying cool of the toddler thinking bird/rocket ship design (shown); particularly fitting for little ones with big dreams.

Grosgrain Groupie

ribbiesclippies.gif

I have this thing about patterned grosgrain ribbon (I’m like a kid in a candy store in the J. Crew flip flops section), so it’s likely no surprise that I'm crazy about Ribbies Clippies.

Created by two sisters who have collected a fresh, stylish, and eye popping collection of grosgrain, these ribbon clips fit babies to big girls, slide easily into place (no snapping involved), and stay put via a thin, color coordinated foam grip inside the clip. Available in a host of shapes and color families, I especially love the bullseye collection (shown), and Laurel loves them all. We have the Kim Squares, Chloe Dots, and Ashton Bullseye clips, and in the morning, when I ask Laurel which ones she wants to wear, she replies, “Today I want color dots…can I have color squares tomorrow? And more color dots the next day?”

Little Capers

littlecapers_star.gif

Our neighbor (a psychologist who has taught scores of preschoolers) recently shared a great idea that her teaching team had for creative play. In response to parental concerns about the violence and marketing of some commercial characters, “Be Your Own Superhero” time was created, during which the kids developed imaginative characters with amazing powers (I especially love “Bionic Dinosaur”). The kids enthusiastically latched onto the power and creativity of this game, carrying it through the entire school year.

Great minds apparently think alike, and thanks to Little Capers, your little superhero can get into character in comfort. Little Capers offers colorful, boldly designed 100% cotton short and long sleeved superhero shirts made in a non-sweatshop environment. Shirts for the 2-8 year old crowd come with cool, detachable contrast capes; cape-free shirts are available in 6-24 months. We love that this non-commercial super gear offers inspiration for both girls and boys, while being practicable and comfortable on the playground.

Lifeguard On Duty

skimbaco.jpg

Yesterday Laurel and I had to leave the park shortly after arrival as the sun bore down intensely and I realized I forgot to bring sunscreen (note to self: stow extra bottles in the car and tote). Any ideas about risking a little color were quickly shelved by mommy guilt as I watched the other parents slather their kids. And while Laurel was a good sport about leaving so soon, at that moment I wish we had had another magical line of defense to allow at least a few (less guilty) rounds on the structures.

Such a line indeed exists in Cabana Life’s nifty UV protection collection at Skimbaco. Including breezy, beachy items for boys, girls, and women, Cabana Life’s cotton collection (founded by melanoma survivor Melissa Papock) offers 50+ UV protection (typical lightweight cotton tees offer about SPF 5). A great pick for kids is the White Lifeguard T-Shirt ($28; listed for boys but I think girls could wear it too). The tee is soft and comfy in construction and freshly styled with the ringer contrast and lifeguard motif in a cool blue.

Bargains for Babies

kidsurplus.gif

If physically sifting through discount racks tuckers you out, try this online shopping suggestion from Kate:

“Anyone who regularly shops for baby and kid items knows how expensive it can be to do so. KidSurplus.com offers a great selection of toys, clothes, shoes, feeding items, art supplies, and other gear, all at amazingly low prices. The website is a little low-tech, and it can take a long time to look through all of the available items, but the prices are great, the brands are well known (although sometimes disguised behind cute false names), and the customer service is top-notch. This site was particularly handy back during the holidays, when I wasn't in the mood to face the stores but still wanted a good range of options for the range of babies and little people in my life. Shipping is always $7.95, no matter how much you order, and my items arrived quickly and without trouble.”

Skipping Hippos

skippinghippos.gif

Our family never took destination vacations (the mere thought of negotiating 7 kids through an airport makes my brain hurt...), and my parents couldn’t afford to be away from their store for more than a day at a time, so the periodic days where we all piled into the groovy two-toned van and headed down for a day at the Duxbury shore are among my favorite childhood memories. To this day, I love clinging to the beach towards the end of the day as everyone else is heading home, wrapped in layers as the chill sets in.

If your daughter also loves being the last to leave the beach, check out the snuggly fleece ponchos at Skipping Hippos. I myself never rocked ponchos when they made their adult comeback, but they’re timelessly cute on little kids, and Skipping Hippos's collection (6 months - 4T) is suitable for chilly temperatures at the beach and throughout the year. Ponchos are available in a pretty array of colors with cute contrast detailing via the nubbly pom-pom edging, border trim, and tassel on the peaked hood (shown, Edna; $46).

Little Storytellers

poopasnuffas.gif

With seven kids, my parents had no choice but to be minimalist when it came to toys (I got my first stuffed animal when I was 5 after my tonsillectomy). My sisters and I spent a lot of time drumming up stories and illustrating them with pen and filler paper. Those simpler times are no longer the norm, but kids are the same – blessed with fabulously active imaginations. This is never more evident to me than when I see Laurel on her own or with her preschool pals, jabbering away during pretend play.

Catwalking Tall

anntaylor_noel.gif

During high school and college summers, I scooped ice cream at one of the local best, back when the tip cup was novel; reserved for truly effortful duty such as hand packing quarts of ice cream. My less physically strenuous adult equivalent is a celadon jar, in which I toss cash procured from random Craigslist sales or bills discovered in last season’s pockets. There’s something oddly thrilling about hitting the retail pavement with a wad of cash that feels like free money. It also makes me feel less guilty about splurging on a great find.

Yesterday my jar delivered a pair of shoes that I can’t wait to rock this holiday weekend. Ann Taylor’s Noel Cork Platforms (shown in red; $108) cleverly combine woven straw, patent leather, and cork into a chic sandal that will serve duty at a wedding and likely also for brunch, paired with dressy shorts. My feet tend not to be the easiest to fit (all the more reason to splurge when I find a good pair), but catwalking on the 3+ inch heels (Jon insisted…) wasn’t even that onerous thanks to the padded foot bed.

Smoothing Support

spanx.gif

Despite the warm weather, sometimes fashion or desire dictates the need for the smoothing effects of hose. Reader Ali from South Hamilton wrote in with praise for Mama Spanx:

“Many women are familiar with Spanx, the undergarment revolution of wearer-friendly body slimmers. For pregnant moms, there are now a variety of maternity Spanx styles that support and smooth your changing body. Mama Spanx come in mid-thigh (a.k.a. power panty), footless (in nude or black), and full-length (in nude or black) versions. Bands support your belly and thighs without needing to resort to those large, harness-like pregnancy girdles.”

What's Your Sign?

agbella.gif

Whether or not you believe in astrology, it’s tough to resist the fun of trait matching, whether it’s via daily horoscopes, zodiac animal charts on Chinese restaurant placemats, or – for the more dedicated – analysis of potential star crossedness in books such as Linda Goodman’s Love Signs (which my sisters and I used to pore over in high school).

However you indulge, the cute zodiac tees by AG bella offer good fodder to talk traits (likely the positive ones!) at your babe’s next play date. In sizes from newborn to 2 years, AG bella’s playful zodiac designs are uniquely rendered on woven labels to keep the color fresh wash after wash (in background colors for boys or girls; shown Baby Scorpio on pink). Designs can be applied to bodysuits, tees, or pants.

Westcoast Baby

westcoastbaby.gif

Once upon a time, baby clothes were nondescript, forgettable, easily misplaced items. That’s all changed in this era of baby chic, and you won’t be able to take your eyes off of the vivid designs from westcoast baby.

The westcoast collection includes newborn layette pieces and cheeky, patterned clothing and accessories for the 3 months and up crowd. Their signature layette includes snuggly cotton stretch jersey beanie hats, blankets, and kimono wraps in a fresh yet classic color palette, great for “bringing home baby” photos and every day. We especially love the vibrant orange kimono with chocolate piping (shown; $25.95) for its color as well as its easy tie closures, fold over cuffs, and open end for easy diapering. The 3 months+ collection includes cheerfully patterned pants, kimono tops, dresses, and accessories; their bibs and burp cloths are reversible (decorative fabric on one side, mess-absorbing terry on the reverse), and their generously sized, peanut shaped burp cloths fit beautifully over the shoulder.

Jaime Pressly offers a sneak peak at the safari-themed nursery she created for son (from The Stylish Child). And Debra Messing says she’ll do a lot of things for a character, but wearing falsies isn’t one of them (from Celebrity Moms).

Hot Mama Ink

hotmamaink.gif

Ironically enough, my wild and crazy college student behavior emerged after finishing undergrad (suspiciously correlated with my meeting Jon, still an undergrad at the time…), complete with the requisite tattoo/belly ring ruminations. And while visiting a dingy Boston piercing parlor promptly scared me out of the idea, now it’s possible to make a rocker chic impression (that’s physically impermanent) through the designs of Hot Mama Ink.

Hot Mama Ink fuses rock and roll style with delicious, delicious comfort (you can never have enough machine washable clothing as a mom…). Their tattoo inspired, motherhood celebrating artwork is screen printed onto soft tanks, hoodies, tees, yoga pants/capris (including maternity), and baby slings. A great pick is the aptly named Fierce Love long sleeve tee (shown; $68), a cozy, sexy, and stylish way to proudly wear motherhood on your sleeve.

Tiny Revolutionary

tinyrevolutionary.gif

Laurel recently declared that she "wants to wedding" her preschool BFFs (both girls). No doubt the son of one of my mama pals will be crestfallen if this transpires, but if Laurel does decide to start a same sex family some day, I’ll happily direct her to the progressive designs by Tiny Revolutionary.

Launched last month, Tiny Revolutionary’s collection includes tees and onesies (infant through 4T) that celebrate modern family configurations (e.g., same sex parents, families with adopted children), and make pointed yet playful statements about issues such as the environment, animal rights, and war. Their hip, colorful designs – such as Two Mommies, One Love (shown; $23 tee) – are printed on sweatshop-free, super soft, Pima cotton. This forward thinking company also works towards change by donating $1 per item purchased to children's charities.

Plum Blossom Barrettes

As someone who obsesses over fine papers and textiles, I repeatedly am blown away by the beauty and intricacy of Japanese papers and fabrics. These new clips and barrettes feature “ume” (Japanese plum blossoms) that have been hand crafted from vintage Japanese silk kimonos. Single ume clips are $9 and triple ume barrettes (shown) are $16.

For Party & Play

pediped.gif

As one of seven children, ill fitting, bargain shoes were - not surprisingly - the norm. And while it didn’t bother me in the least back then, resulting bunions (a major nuisance for this shoe addict) have left me particularly sensitive about the fit and comfort of Laurel’s footwear.

While there are some terrific soft-soled play shoe options on the market, we love that pediped makes typically unyielding, uncomfortable baby/toddler dress shoes a thing of the past. Offered in sizes 0-24 months, pediped’s collection includes stylish, fun Mary Janes, patent shoes, penny loafers, sandals, and athletic shoes. And perhaps because of the soft-soled construction, their boy and girl kicks can work both at your next party, or just out and about every day, giving parents more bang for their shoe buck. Podiatrists also give this footwear line a thumbs up due to the cushioned leather soles, wide toe box, and soft leather uppers.

The new, funky Zoe shoes in metallic pink are a must have for girls (shown; $29). With cute star cutouts, a glimmering finish, and super comfy construction (not to mention easy on/off Velcro fasteners for parents), your babe can and will want to wear these everywhere.

Versatile Vincents

vincent.jpg

Laurel seems predisposed to a future of warm weather leisure; she loves hotels and has expressed her excitement about summer sandals ever since the weather started to creep past freezing.

But summer feels awfully far away these days, making us that much more grateful for the versatility of Laurel’s Toni shoes by Vincent (shown; $44.95). These recently released spring kicks are about as close to sandals as we can get (via vented openings) while still offering plenty of coverage on chilly days. We also have tried the groovy, striped Smith sneaker, and in both cases love the easy Velcro fastening (which encourages Laurel to work on getting her shoes on and off on her own), and the sturdy yet lightweight, flexible construction.

Hipster Jeans

ae_jeans.gif

Back in January, after reading an interesting New York Times feature on the intentional – and successful – tactics of niche oriented retailers (i.e., those who cater to particular age/style demographics versus trying to cater to all), the chances of me stepping into a teen (or early 20’s at best) store like American Eagle decreased exponentially. But this morning, emboldened by a favorable AE denim pitch I recalled seeing in a non-teen source, and the need for new denim (not to mention an adventure that would get us out of the house but shield us from the wind), I stopped in with Laurel.

The experience reminded me not to judge a book by its cover. The staffers were friendly and extremely sweet towards Laurel, and I did in fact pick up a terrific pair of jeans. Check out the AE Hipster Jean; it’s got a stylishly low (but not too low) rise and boot cut similar to my beloved Lucky’s, but at a fraction of the price ($29.50). The Sunfaded Wash is particularly fresh for spring, and the back pockets feature flattering signature stitching.

Prophecy Wear

prophecywear.jpg

We never fail to be amazed by how much distinct personality and energy little people have, even when they’re teeny tiny. And you can let them wear that personality on their sleeve, as it were, with the bibs, bodysuits, and tees at Prophecy Wear. Available in sizes for babies up to kids' size 12, Prophecy Wear uses simple statements to celebrate the interests and aspirations of kids. We like the Total Package bodysuit (shown; $13, available in sizes 6-24 months), reflective of our belief that all kids are born with great gifts.

Prophecy Wear has extended a shopping code to Boston Mamas readers; use code BMAMAS07 to receive a 15% discount on your order (expires 12/31/07).

UPDATE 12/10/07: ProphecyWear is closing its doors. All direct links subsequently have been removed.

Inspired By Nature

littlelark.gif

The seasons are, blissfully, officially about to change, and no doubt your child’s wardrobe is due for some spring cleaning. It’s the perfect time to check out the fresh designs of Little Lark.

Based out of Portland, Oregon, Little Lark’s collection includes a variety of designs, most of which show clear inspiration from nature. Designs are letterpressed onto note cards, or are hand silk-screened onto snuggly soft, sweatshop free, 100% cotton shirts, onesies, pants, and hats (for babies and toddlers; big kid and adult sizes are forthcoming). Onesies and shirts also come with a gift-ready, reusable muslin bag that adds to the rich, organic feel.

With plenty of snow and ice still on the ground, the spring promise of the Geese Tee (shown, $24-$26) is especially welcome.

Makrista features a lovely collection of whimsical, watercolor style designs that can be applied to a variety of 100% cotton clothing styles and accessories (0-36 months). Images can be screen-printed onto pebble or white garments, or placed against rich, hand-dyed colors via their cool new distressed patches (images are sewn on the chest; wording at the back neckline). Destination Maternity

destinationmaternity.jpg

Sometimes (particularly after a stretch of indulgent eating) serving as a fashion consultant to a friend is more fun than shopping for yourself. Yesterday I had great fun hitting the maternity pavement with a girlfriend desperately in need of bumpworthy business attire.

After checking out Target and Kohl’s, both of which have a few business separates options but are better suited for casual wear, we hit the jackpot at Destination Maternity in Natick. Surprisingly not overwhelming in square footage, this one-stop shopping location includes retail areas each for Motherhood, Mimi Maternity, A Pea in the Pod, Destination Maternity, and Edamame Spa, which ensures satisfying a range of budgets and clothing styles, whether you are in the market for a $10 basic vs. $300 designer dress.

Make a Statement

tuniandg.gif

Just because tees are an inevitable part of the mommy wardrobe doesn’t mean you can’t hang onto your sassy style.

Tuni & G offers comfy clothing for babies, kids, and adults (including maternity); among their collection are separates that can be paired to create punchy Mommy & Me sets. Especially cool is the My Baby Rolls/My Mom Rocks set (piece prices range from $28-36). Available in various sizes, styles, and colors, the logos are constructed entirely of chic pressed stud embellishments. We also love that this style offers a “My Grandma Rocks” baby/kid onesie or tee to honor hip and stylish grandmas.

Fabulous Flats

oldnavyflats.gif

Given my obsession with ballet flats, I was thrilled to see StyleBakery’s round up of 8 ballet flats under $60. I immediately ordered the Old Navy Satin Ballet Flats ($19.50), and they're fabulous. Word on these elegant, impressively comfortable flats clearly is spreading. There was plenty of stock when I ordered a pair in chocolate last week; now chocolate is sold out and the two remaining colors are following suit. Click quickly to get a pair!

Meanwhile, if the satin flat ship has sailed in your size, you'll likely find consolation in Old Navy's new Leopard Ballet Flats (shown; $19.50); they don’t appear to offer the cushioned foot bed of the satin flats but the styling is too cute to pass up.

Cultural Collection

tees_ciao.gif

In my dream world, I already would have mastered Korean plus all of the Romance languages. And although there's little time for the language lab these days, now it's possible to expand your cultural horizons while hanging with your babe.

Inspired by a desire to help parents and kids celebrate different languages and cultures, Il Cocco di Mamma carries a unique, worldly collection of apparel, books, and toys. Their super soft, super cool line of signature onesies ($22; 6-24 months) are printed with popular international sayings (shown; Ciao!). Elegant and colorful wooden foreign alphabet blocks are available in English, French, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Russian, and Hebrew. And be sure to check out their nifty series of international books and CDs; if you've got Dr. Seuss down in English, now's your chance to learn it in another language.

All About Boys

boysclothes.gif

Boys typically get the short end of the fashion stick compared to the myriad options for girls. But the tides are turning, and if you’re looking for style and attitude off the beaten path, check out the cool offerings of Pure Boy Clothes (infants to kids), Hey Peanut (infant and toddlers), and Red 21 Boys (infants to kids), all of which cater exclusively to boys.

Unique Eco Clothing

nixie.gif

Every now and then duplicates of Laurel’s play clothes make their way to our laundry (a classmate’s clothing, sent home accidentally from school), and I let out a collective sigh for the convenience and commonplaceness that the mass clothing market provides.

Achieving individuality is not a problem at Nixie Clothing, where designer Nicole Frobusch has created a line of mostly one-off, boho chic children’s clothing (ages 1-8) made from 100% recycled wools and vintage cottons. The butterfly dresses (wool with vintage scarf sleeves) and leg warmers (knits and lace) make for an especially unique presentation (shown).

Blirt Shirts

blirt.gif

Baby/kid t’s seem to be the canvas for artistic expression these days. And a new standout is Blirt, whose collection for little ones (sized 6 months-8 years) reflects hip graphic renderings of figures of speech (shown; “fish out of water”; $25). These groovy, gender-neutral t’s are eco-friendly (made from 100% organic cotton using non-toxic dyes and a water based silk screening process) and come in ready to gift packaging.

Blirt’s current inaugural collection is petite (3 designs), but they are rolling out a new line of designs come early March. We got a sneak peek at the graphics, which pop with color and cleverness; we're eager for the collection launch this spring.

Odd Glove In

littlemissmatched.jpg

‘Tis the season for lost gloves and you’ll never again have to worry about winterwear singletons with the odd numbered, brightly colored glove sets of Little Miss Matched. These mismatched but color coordinated glove sets (shown, Marshmallow Gloves Kooky 4,5,6, $16) are soft and stretchy, come 3 to a pack, and fit kids starting age 5 and stretch all the way to a women’s medium. With a couple packs at the ready, you and your little one will be set for winter.

Little Miss Matched also offers the same odd numbered model for their sock collection, which includes 3- or 7-pack sets for toddlers, kids, and adults.

One Stop Style

blablamobile.gif

I certainly appreciate, and have benefited from, the practicality of baby shower registries, but sometimes you stumble on a seriously fabulous shower gift that warrants diverting from more mundane necessities.

Case in point: Pink Olive Boutique's stock of beautiful, vivid blabla knits. Especially impressive is the Small Jungle Mobile (shown; $78), a hand knitted work of art measuring 8” in diameter. We also love the cheerful ladybug booties and hat ($28 each).

Pink Olive just launched in November but this web boutique carries a cool collection of chic baby items, gifts, and stylish warm weather getaway gear. And Pink Olive is offering Boston Mamas readers a little New Year's gift; type “Boston Mamas” in the comments box before checking out to receive free ground shipping on orders over $50. (Shipping fee will be removed manually on order processing.)

Love My Luckys

lucky_bg.gif

My girlfriend Heidi has a crazy good nose for shopping; neither the high-end boutiques nor the jammed racks at TJ Maxx intimidate her, and she’s dead honest in the dressing room.

So who better to enlist on my recent quest for fabulous jeans? I had had enough of trolling around in inexpensive jeans that fit great the first time around then stretched in odd and unflattering ways, and was prepared to lay out the cash for a fabulously fitting pair of designer jeans (or find the right pair and hunt them down for less on Ebay).

Our first stop was Jasmine Sola, where the staff was helpful and knowledgeable, but the jeans all about a foot too long in the leg (and I’m not that short, at 5 feet, 4¼ inches), and several inches too low in the back. Somewhat dejected (20 pairs later...), I was ready to give up and grab lunch but Heidi encouraged me to pop into Lucky Brand Jeans, and I am thrilled that we did. Lucky offers jeans with shorter inseams and midrise styling so you get a little more coverage while still looking current.

I got the Sundown Jeans (hipster wash; $98) with the short inseam; they are slim through the leg, midrise in back, and offer a bootleg cut. Now who says shopping can't solve problems?

New For Baby

nfb_pink.jpg

Keeping up with the feeding and diapering needs of a newborn can be overwhelming; tack on the frustration of attempting to dress your babe in ill-conceived pieces (e.g., our all time worst newborn garment: jumper with no crotch snaps and only buttons up the back) and your tank will be running on negative.

Enter New For Baby, a company started by two moms who knew they could improve on existing layettes that were lackluster in fit and style. New For Baby offers a yummy mix and match layette collection in fresh pieces constructed to make dressing a breeze. Their long sleeved bodysuit (shown, girl’s pink and chocolate, $18) is tagless, offers foldover cuffs to prevent scratching, and has neckline snaps for easy on and off. Their incredibly soft, coordinate-with-anything micro fleece hoodie ($26) is another must have.

Choose from New For Baby’s hip boy, girl, and unisex color palettes; or select from their coordinated gift sets (ranging from $10 - $185). New For Baby is offering Boston Mamas readers a bargain; enter code “BM06” to receive a 10% discount at checkout.

Rock On

cribrock.gif

Who says good clean fun can’t be cool?

Crib Rock Couture’s ultra hip line of tees and onesies breathes new life into classic nursery rhymes via clever infusion of music and pop culture lingo. These punchy nursery rhyme concert tees are printed on super comfy, vividly colored fabrics, including a fabulous new line of Supima (100% Pima) cotton thermal tees. Laurel went loco over the blissfully soft, perfectly constructed Hey Diddle Diddle tee (shown; $40). She couldn’t get the tee on fast enough (a major coup, given that lately she’s preferred running around the house in various states of undress…), or resist pointing out the characters and singing the tee lyrics repeatedly through the day.

Crib Rock’s collection currently includes designs to fit lil’ rockers from 6 months to 14 years. Coordinated sweatpants and clam diggers for the under 2 crowd are forthcoming, and come spring, adult tees will make a comeback. A fabulously soft tee or tank designed especially for hip mamas is in the works. Stay tuned!

Crib Rock Couture is available locally at Bump (Beacon Hill, Boston) and Oh Baby Love (Salem); alternatively, shop the online boutique and receive 10% off your order when you use the code “BostonMamas” at checkout.

Put Your Best Bootie Forward

isabooties.gif

Typically, it’s tough for me not to love anything that comes trimmed with fabulous ribbon, but IsaBooties soft-soled baby shoes are truly praise worthy. IsaBooties come in a delicious palette of colors and coordinating trims for boys and girls ages 3 - 18 months (shown, Chocolate Fleurs, $24), and we give these 100% animal-product free kicks top marks over their leather soft-soled counterparts.

Why? IsaBooties are machine-washable and dryable, but unlike leather shoes, the buttery soft suede uppers won’t fade, shrink, or crack, and the material is durable, breathable, and resistant to scuffs and stains. The soles are constructed from a patented durable grip material that is non-slip in wet, dry, warm, or cold conditions, yet retains a soft and flexible feel that is perfect for new walkers.

We enjoyed the cute designs of leather soft-soled shoes when Laurel was learning to walk, but after a handful of launderings her shoes looked cracked and weathered and came out of the dryer stiff as a board. IsaBooties will be our shoe of choice on the next go 'round.

Color Liberation

busfriends.jpg

When I first saw Focoloco’s motto, “…think of us as the garish, orange life vest saving you from drowning in a sea of pastels,” I knew I was going to like what they had to offer.

Focoloco’s designer/owner Suzy Helme has created an array of groovy, unusual designs (shown, “Bus Friends”) for spunky babies and kids (0 - 6 years). Based out of Western Massachusetts, Focoloco’s designs are incorporated into a selection of 100% sweatshop-free regular and organic cotton onesies, t’s, bibs, and hats (products range from $9-22). And Focoloco’s commitment to cool colors extends beyond their graphic designs; most products are available in natural, or in one of four eye-popping, hand-dyed colors (fire engine red, grassy green, plum blossom, electric blue).

Reindeer Games

okki_reindeer.jpg

As long as your sleep deprived eyes are at least halfway open, there’s no missing the fabulous transformation that has hit the baby apparel circuit. One of the contributors to this fashion revolution is Okki (which, incidentally, means "wake up"), an apparel company founded by a socially conscious mom with a fun eye for design.

Okki’s bright, cheerful 100% cotton collection makes a statement in punchy colors. Choose from a variety of onesies and t’s, coordinated gift sets (onesie, booties, and hat), and birthday sets (onesie or t-shirt plus bib). This week Okki will unveil their holiday collection, which includes the snuggly, long-sleeve reindeer onesie shown here ($20).

We also love Okki because they give back; a portion of their profits are directed to a Colombian orphanage. Okki also is offering an exclusive holiday discount to Boston Mamas readers. Use coupon code “bostonma20” to receive 20% off your order plus free shipping via USPS. This code expires December 15, 2006.

Sock Sanity

ritdye.jpg

I hate to think that I am pandering to the requests of a crazy toddler, but the thing is, Jon and I got completely fed up with the huge ordeal associated with putting socks and shoes on our babe once fall hit. Clearly, Laurel wishes to reside in a climate that offers more than a 3-month window of sandal season.

I bet Laurel would love the colors and patterns of the previously reported Trumpettes socks but they only come in 0-12 months. So this week I gathered Laurel’s fleet of white Old Navy socks (multi-pack purchased when I got tired of sock sorting and lost pairs) and dyed them yellow (her favorite color). The dye process took about 2 minutes; I added a little yellow Rit Dye ($2.49 at Joann Fabrics) to hot water, stirred the socks in the dye with a plastic spoon, and squeezed out the excess water (wearing a plastic bag on my hand). Then I let the socks air-dry (I wasn’t sure if tossing them directly in the dryer would stain the appliance) then ran them through the dryer to set the dye.

Sock time has been more sane ever since. Now if only I could find a pair of yellow shoes...

Stay Put Socks

trumpettes.jpg

You’d never guess that a tiny pair of baby feet could be so facile at wiggling out of socks, but my mama pal Kate swears by the stay put prowess of Trumpettes. These brightly colored and patterned socks are constructed with non-skid bottoms and just enough top elastic to hold socks in place while not cutting off circulation; a cute egg carton serves as shower-stopping packaging.

This Perfect Dozen of Socks fits 0-12 months and is available at Uncommon Goods in polka-dot or stripe sets ($30).

Green Style

gg_tee.gif

Golf is harder than it looks. But apparently it’s even harder to find women’s golf apparel that shows that you've got both your style and athletic game faces on.

Enter girlsgreen, a company founded by a pair of sisters on a mission to infuse style into women's golf apparel through their cool collection of polos and tees. girlsgreen's golf polos are classically structured but updated to incorporate fresh colors and pretty detailing, such as contrast buttons or patterned collars. Their ¾ sleeve fall polo ($49) offers styling and weight perfectly suited for autumn temperatures. Wear it alone or layered over one of the super soft, fine jersey cotton range tees (shown, girlie tee in bubble gum, $24).

These tops are so cute and comfortable that they are terrific for everyday wear or out on the green, even if your golfing ability is limited to mini putt.

Fall Kicks

landsend_allweathermj.jpg

I’m having a tough time wrestling the summer sandals from the babe; but when we have managed to slide on her cute and comfy Lands' End Toddler Girls' Print All Weather Mary Jane Shoes ($34.50 in Toddler and Little Kid/Big Kid sizes, solid or print), we’re thrilled with the result.

We’ve praised Lands’ End’s footwear before and these Mary Jane’s don’t disappoint. Ladylike yet rugged, the toe box is ample enough for Laurel's chubby feet (a.k.a. “meat hammers,” from the days when we attempted to co-sleep and ended up getting kicked in the throat), and the construction offers a ground gripping, all-terrain sole, adjustable strap, anti-microbial micro fleece lining to help prevent stinky feet, and weather-resistant suede leather uppers.

All By Self

sailboatbelt.jpg

The “all by self” phase, coupled with development of dressing (and undressing) skills and/or potty training, can lead to tired waistband elastics and droopy drawers for your little one.

Solve this problem in style with the Myself Belt ($14.50 at Amazon, shown in Sailboat), an accessory that promotes independence by allowing children (ages 2-6) to easily fasten and unfasten their belt on their own. These belts come in a variety of cute styles for girls and boys, as well as simple black leather ($15.50) for more formal occasions.

Mommy Femme Bot

easyexpressions.jpg

There isn't much sex appeal associated with pumping (I believe Jon let out an extended, definitive, and less than supportive "mooo!" when he first saw me pump), but if you’d like to feel - as a mama pal describes - “vaguely like [an Austin Powers] femme bot” (while pumping efficiently of course), try the Easy Expressions Bustier.

A terrific pump at work solution, the bustier makes hands-free double pumping easy through a strapless, zip-front design. Available in small (32-34), medium (34-36), large (38-40), and extra-large (42-44) for $33.95 (see the Breastfeeding Accessories section of BabyCenter).

The vibrant Green Apple Stem Earrings, made of peridot chips, green apple quartz, and sterling silver ($33; shown) are a fun and versatile pick.

Purchases from You’re Beautiful will make you feel good inside and out; proceeds from each purchase are donated to charity. September’s charity is the Joslin Diabetes Center.

Giddy Up

gg_bowwow.jpg

Mamahood apparently comes without the warning label that potential side effects may include creative liberation and career change.

Case in point: Teri Dimalanta of giddygiddy, a self proclaimed “investment analyst turned craftaholic mom” (whose story is similar to my own). The giddygiddy collection features clips in the form of flowers (big and little blooms), food (fruits, veggies, and treats), and the cutest little animal collection you’ve ever seen (shown, “bow wow”; all clips are $8 each). And Teri’s clever styling goes beyond the "oohs!" and "aahs!" effect; the metal snap clip is sewn snuggly into the felt design to avoid snags, and stay put in fine baby hair.

Fashion Swap

fashion.jpg

A new season is nearly upon us, a time made complicated by burning fashion desire + limited resources. A while back, my fabulous mama friend Paige hosted a terrific ladies’ event that perfectly suited said fashion desire + limited resources issue.

The event was a fashion swap, before which everyone weeded out their closets and laundered their fashionable, yet now tragically ill-fitting items. Wine and fondue accompanied the initial open browsing period; we then picked numbers out of a hat and, in order, went shopping. The only rules were that we only select one item per go around (so those later in the order had plenty to choose from), and that we tell the other ladies about our super cool find. It was a great way to relax with friends, refurbish wardrobes, and chat about the stories behind some of the clothes.

As it turned out, the event kept on giving. Even after everyone had shopped ‘til they dropped, there remained a pile of great clothing with lots of love and sass left in them. These items were donated to a local Goodwill.

Global Girlfriend offers apparel and accessories, jewelry, gifts, and décor items. A great pick is the Bold Silk Cosmetic Bag in pink and orange ($12). Oh Canada!

mapleleaf.jpg

Canada is a great place to be a mama. Everyone has access to health care, typical maternity leave is one year, and homegrown products and resources for babies and moms abound.

One of my Canadian mama pals from graduate school pointed me to a couple of especially cool companies. Milkface.com offers a cute array of nursing clothing (check out the comfy and stylish tops!), nursing supplies, and slings. The cloth diapering products from Motherease.com also get high marks. Designed by a seasoned mom who grew tired of the cumbersome and leaky workings of traditional cloth diapering systems, the patented Motherease design offers a snug and streamlined fit for excellent function and comfort.

Both companies ship to the US and internationally.

Bag Lady

sumdex_laptop.jpg

I knew I was in trouble this past spring when the torrential rains hit and I was left to grovel at the hospital gift store for a plastic bag to protect my laptop.

Although that bag saved my laptop’s life, it left something to be desired functionally. I scoured the market for a protective, stylish laptop tote. I didn't want another black bag, but some of the funkier bags were either too pricey and/or huge. As in, so huge they were practically approaching flight speed on their own. I nearly caved and bought one of the pricier totes, but I decided that I didn't want to be wed to one bag for laptop carry.

I finally hit upon just the right solution. The Sumdex Padded Laptop Sleeve fits laptops 13” x 10” x 1” and is available for $17.99 at Ebags. The sleeve is compact and protective, and so long as my bag du jour is big enough, I can match my bag to outfit instead of vice versa.

Note: At Ebags, click on the “Will my laptop fit?” link in the Product Features section to check for your laptop model’s size compatability.

Avoid Overexposure

el_nursingdress.jpg

I wish I had known about Eva Lillian last summer. We were off to a wedding and I was so excited to wear the stylish little dress that had been hanging with tags in my closet (purchased just before discovering I was pregnant) that I completely neglected how nursing un-friendly the dress was.

The wedding was at the home of the parents of the bride (who I didn’t know well at the time); there was no hotel room to retreat to and I didn’t feel comfortable asking to use the upstairs quarters. So I hunkered down in the living room in a wing chair and tried my best to be discreet while essentially sitting their topless, stylish dress aflutter. The babe, who was having a grand old time at the party, wasn’t the most cooperative partner. She kept pulling off and looking around, completely leaving me hanging.

Eva Lillian, a maternity and nursing boutique, offers the Sexy & Sophisticated Nursing Dress ($89; shown in teal), a nursing dress that creates a shapely silhouette while hiding the parts of your shape you’d rather leave private. In black or teal up to size 18 and machine washable, the comfy factor of this dress also makes it suitable for pregnancy and transition.

Ready to Wear

bravado_tank.jpg

With the right nursing top, you almost can feel as if you are leading a typical, clothed life.

I recently revisited the topic of nursing bras with a friend (who is deep in the throes of nursing for the second time) for a soon-to-be mama pal on the North Shore. Nursing tanks/camisoles are a fabulous, versatile solution. They are great for day (e.g., under cute cardigan or button down to feign appearance of put together new mama), night (i.e., because you’re too tired to change into jammies), and nursing in public (i.e., your sides aren’t exposed as they would be if you had to lift your shirt to get to a nursing bra).

Go with a tank/camisole where the front fabric piece unsnaps and folds down similar to a typical nursing bra (vs. the tanks where you essentially just pull down the top and are completely exposed across the upper chest). The nursing tanks at Target are a steal for around $13.

If you are willing to splurge, Bravado has a new nursing tank with super cute styling (shown above). The Bravado Essential Nursing Bra Tank ($47 at BabyCenter) has said snap/hooks in front, shirring at the chest, and flare at the waist to avoid feeling constrained. It’s available in white, sky blue, and black (I prefer black to hide leaks and stains).

Almost Famous

bs_abcdtshirt.jpg

Although $30 seems steep for a tiny tee, your babe no doubt will bring back lots of concert revenue in this born to rock baseball tee. I saw this tee on the super cute son of a friend of a friend; I think my little babe was swooning in his rocker presence!

Available at Babystyle, this tee is 50/50 cotton/poly and machine washable. Baby sizes are $28, kid sizes $30. A short-sleeved pink (with rhinestone lettering) version is available for rocker chicks.

Your Fabulous You

logo_healthworks.jpg

Ah, how I took the Nursing Weight Loss Plan for granted. I was one of the lucky ones whose pregnancy weight fell off quickly, thanks to the voracious infant who nursed her way through the entire 2004 World Series, and otherwise was happiest being walked around and around the block in a sling.

Then a few months post-nursing, many baked goods, and three major clothing crises later I discovered that I had gained 15 pounds. My fabulous husband, who insisted he didn’t even notice the weight gain (perhaps it’s the myopia) suggested that there was one thing I should do and two things I could do. The “should” was to buy myself a pile of clothes that actually fit and made me feel good. The “could’s” were to join him in trying to cut down on the daily desserts, and/or find a fitness outlet.

Modest Mouse

landsend_tankini.jpg

Maybe I’m old fashioned (or still traumatized by memories of emerging out of the ocean with a bikini top wrapped around my neck as a 5 year old), but I’m just not comfortable suiting up my toddler in an itsy bitsy bikini. That said, I do think that two-pieces are great for diaper changing ease.

So imagine my delight when I came across the Land’s End Tugless Tankini. This bestselling suit is sporty and cute, offers 40 UPF protection, and has a tug-free fit to keep all the pieces in place.

This suit currently is on sale for $22.99 (toddler size; they also have little girl sizes). But, I actually got my babe a cute pink and orange version of the same suit (shown) for a mere $12 through the Overstock section of the Land’s End website.

Too Cool for School

jazo_sunglasses.jpg

As a new parent sometimes it’s hard to realize that the sun is in your babe’s eyes because you are walking around with your eyes half shut due to sleep deprivation. Solve this problem by defaulting to a pair of groovy JazO shades. The shatterproof polycarbonate lenses block out 100% of harmful UVA and UVB rays, and the soft, adjustable neoprene strap keeps the sunglasses in place and has a built in safety release. Infant sunglasses (0-3 year olds) include 2 bands (13 and 14 inches). Children sunglasses (4-8 years olds) include one 14-inch band with larger glasses.

Available for $8.99 at Amazon in infants' blue, purple, pink, and red and children's blue, purple, pink, red and flag pattern.

Second Time's A Charm

logo_secondtimearound.jpg

As a mama, it’s all about multi-tasking. So when you next hit a crisis inspired by a closet full of pre-mama clothing that no longer fits, head to Second Time Around. This boutique offers new and resale clothing – a place where you can sell your pre-mama clothes and boost up your wardrobe all in one stop. A mama friend can’t say enough good things about this shop’s chic collection and tech savvy approach (you can track the status of consignment pieces through your online account).

Check out Second Time Around’s website or contact one of their many area locations (3 Boston stores, Cambridge, Newton, Wellesley, Needham, Portsmouth, NH) for consignment details; however my mama pal did pass along the general rules that consignment pieces should be: 1) in season; 2) from within the last two years; and 3) from a fairly popular store/designer (although they rarely take anything from the Gap).

Keeping up with the Toddlers

landsend_toddlersandal.jpg

Let’s get personal. Your mama blogger has ill-fitting-shoe-induced-bunions (don’t try to say that 3 times fast) and they are a grave source of retail distress. Subsequently, I am obsessed with finding properly fitting shoes for my babe.

For summer play, check out the Lands’ End Solid Action Sandals. These thoughtfully designed shoes have a flexible but supportive sole, adjustable forefoot and ankle straps, and padding inside the back ankle strap to prevent chafing. I was so thrilled with the first pair that I just ordered a second pair online. And the price went from $17.50 to $12.99 between the two orders.

Note: while it’s a bummer to pay shipping for online orders, returns/exchanges can be done at a local Sears store (check your local store for sizes; fyi, the Burlington Mall Sears does not carry toddler sizes). If you need to reorder the same item in a different size, the shipping charge is waived.
