TLC in Tandem

susanbrown.jpgIt’s no surprise why babies get showered with goodies, but moms need attention too - particularly postpartum - and that’s why I dig Susan Brown’s Baby. This collection of rich yet gentle, paraben-free body products ensures that mom and baby get their TLC in tandem; the mom products focus on nurturing the belly and feet, while the baby line includes items for bath, diapering, and relaxation. I particularly love the SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion; the composition is creamy yet mild, fragrance-free, and packed with cocoa, shea, and jojoba butters to keep your kid’s skin hydrated. I especially love that it’s gentle and effective enough to be used on Laurel’s face and doesn't feel greasy or sticky.

Want to win a Susan Brown’s Baby gift basket*? Here’s how:

Just Call Me Maven

method.bmpSomeone told me that April typically is crazy as people come out of hibernation and get ready to party. This certainly has been the case for me in the realm of scheduled events, and last night kicked off Chapter 1 of a crazy but fabulous April, via an event where I played hostess to some of my family, friends, and colleagues as a Boston Method Maven. It was a terrific evening of socializing, getting the dirt on chemical-free cleaning, and eco-crafting with environmental lifestyle guru (and fellow Korean!) Danny Seo.

Bring on the Butter

shearadiance.jpgI’ve never understood why Laurel would rather scratch an itch bloody than ask for lotion, but I’m now convinced that until recently we just didn’t have the right goods. Shea Radiance offers a variety of natural skin care goods, and their fresh pressed shea butter products are deliciously effective. Their baby butter - apparently suitable for preschoolers - is creamy, soothing, and offers a gentle dose of aromatherapy perfect for post-bath wind down. And whether it’s the pretty packaging or some implicit knowledge that the contents are derived from rich, natural resources, whenever Laurel opens the jar she peers in, sighs, and says, “I feel fancy.”

Want to be one of two winners to receive Shea Radiance body butter*? Here’s how:

See The Light

babylight.jpgIt wasn’t until last summer – when I could use the prospect of nail polish as bait – that I was able to clip Laurel's nails while she was awake. Prior to that, I’d crouch in the dark next to her crib, or bend uncomfortably over the rails (an increasingly challenging task as her mattress level lowered...), holding a flashlight in my mouth. Seriously. If this sounds familiar, get yourself a Baby Light & Clip. This cleverly designed baby nail clipper is secured in a casing that provides light, catches clippings, and includes a safe guard to prevent nipping baby’s skin.

Cuckoo for Coconut

sumbody.jpgCoconut scents can go terribly wrong (think overpowering suntan lotion), but sumbody’s Coconut & Cream Organic Sugar Scrub gets it just right. Part of the new, eco-chic collection at gigglefish, this scrub is both functional and luxurious. The coarse brown sugar grains exfoliate effectively (best for normal to dry skin), while the shea and cocoa butters + safflower, pistachio, and other essential oils hydrate and protect the skin without leaving residue. As a mama trying to up the self-care and curb the sweets, this scrub nurtures while reminding me - via the gentle, lingering coconut scent - that I’ve already had an excellent treat.

Peppermint Pedi

kleanpedi.jpgWhen I was very pregnant with Laurel (i.e., unable to reach my toes), I developed my deep love for professional pedicures. But in the winter, when my dry skin needs the TLC most, even this devotee can’t bear pedi flip flops in the snow. Luckily, there’s the KLEAN Peppermint Pattie Pedi kit, which is perfect to encourage home self-care while providing an olfactory reminder of holiday treats any time of year. The yummy smelling goodies include exfoliating chocolate sugar polish and refreshingly minty bath syrup and shea body butter. The kit also provides the tools you need - pumice stone, nail brush, toe separators, and spa socks - to slough off the old to ring in the New Year.

Lotuspad

lotuspad.gifYour little yogi or yogini deserves better than typical yoga mats made of PVC (a plastic material containing toxic additives). Luckily, Lotuspad has you covered; their nontoxic, eco-friendly yoga mats offer great cushioning, excellent traction, and chic styling. The 48” mat is perfectly pint sized, and the 66” mat can be used by teens and adults under 5′8″. And for easy transport, Lotuspad offers a variety of fabulous grosgrain ribbon carry straps that are doubled over for stability and perfectly finished with Velcro fasteners. Laurel loves toting her yoga mat around, and the mats have served well in mommy-preschooler tandem, as well as on a recent frigid day when Laurel and two friends went bonkers practicing yoga and “light gymnastics” on the mats.

Ward Off the Winter Ickies

simplygargle.gif

Got Cold? Today Sharon reports on the natural remedy Simply Gargle (and read on for a chance to win some for yourself!):

“While Fall brings with it freshly picked apples, hot cocoa, and beautiful foliage, it also ushers in inevitable coughs, sneezes, and all kinds of mucous-y wonder. And while I used to reach for the heavy-duty cold remedies, I’ve found that often times the simplest remedies can yield the greatest relief. A couple of months ago I wrote about the Neti Pot, a fantastic nasal irrigation system that relieves many nasal ailments. In the same vein, I recently tried Simply Gargle, which happily stunted the onset of what I thought was going to be a full-blown cold.

A Much Needed Push

push.bmp

Ever since I stopped nursing and gained back 10 unshakeable pounds, I’ve sporadically toyed with different fitness options. The gym proved too expensive and time consuming (transit time, waiting for equipment, etc.), and as much as I love walking, it doesn’t impact the same way a targeted workout does. So when the folks at PUSH offered me an opportunity to test their customized personal training DVDs, I was both intrigued and intimidated. The intimidation passed quickly though; PUSH’s concise yet comprehensive workouts will make novices to gurus alike feel the burn in a friendly, efficient, and economical manner.

A Treat for Claustrophobic Feet

ryka.gif

As I’ve been trolling for fall shoes, I’ve come to realize that I have something of a case of foot claustrophobia. I want barely there and easy on/off (the latter being a mom essential actually), and I’m already lamenting the end of flip-flop season. With athletic footwear, however, there’s little choice but to lace up, and thanks to a review partnership with The Parent Bloggers Network and Ryka, I’ve had the chance to test a couple of pairs of Ryka sneakers and identify which ones do and do not make my feet hyperventilate, so to speak.

Multitasking Minutes: The Squat & Edit

clock.jpg

As Jon and I adjust to juggling his new multi-site schedule and my work needs, one car, the never ending list of household errands (requiring said one car), and Laurel’s periodic resistance to heading to her new preschool room, it seems as if we spend an inordinate amount of time figuring out how many minutes it takes to do X, Y, or Z. And this morning’s realization that I’d do well to trade sitting-in-rush-hour minutes for much needed exercise was well timed with a blog blast our pals at The Parent Bloggers Network are running in conjunction with Ryka. Airborne

airborne.gif

When I feel a cold coming I bring on the immune system boosters with brute force, so it was fortuitous that we were testing Airborne last week, when the chaos of prepping for the art show was getting to me.

Airborne's primary product line boosts immune systems at the onset of cold symptoms or before entering germy environments. A couple of days before the show I started getting sick; I dosed up on Airborne, forced myself into bed early, and thankfully was back on track the next day. The quick dissolving adult tablets come in orange, lemon-lime, and pink grapefruit and as someone who prefers to drink water throughout the day, I’d just suggest diluting the tablet in more than the recommended “small amount of water” to tone down the sweetness. Airborne also now offers immune system boosting Power Pixies for kids 4-12 (no water needed, just pour on the tongue like the original pixie sticks candy).

Tone That Tummy

mamamio.gif

With the exception of those traipsing the Hollywood fantastic, most mamas don’t have the resources for the personal trainers, nutritionists, and/or (ahem) cosmetic assistance required to flaunt an awe inspiring postpartum tummy at the beach. And while we advocate and celebrate whatever small self care efforts you can make in terms of good food and fitness (be it short walks or intervals of exercise), you probably also could stand (and deserve) to have a little extra help of the non-invasive cosmetic variety.

Sudsy Sponges

circleoffriends.jpg

While in cooler weather I don’t find it necessary to do daily baths (perhaps to a fault, according to my mom), the sticky days of summer require increased bath frequency, both to clean and cool off little, busy bodies.

These days the ever-independent Laurel really likes scrubbing herself, and she’s been having a lot of fun with the sudsy sponges by Circle of Friends. Available in banana, blueberry, mint chocolate, mandarin orange, raspberry, and root beer, these hypo-allergenic sponges are infused with an unbelievable amount of soap to ensure plenty of use (and a squeaky clean kid). Per Circle of Friends’s dedication to cultural awareness, each flavor is associated with a character and bit of trivia from a different country.

All You Can Do

jumprope.gif

There’s nothing like parenthood to force you to operate in “good enough” (vs. perfectionist) mode. In that vein, today Jules encourages women to shift their fitness mindset from an all-or-nothing to an all-you-can-do approach, offering tips to get you on the road to strength and good health, and exercises you can do in as little as 10-15 minutes:

“Earlier I posted on how to shape your back, but in hindsight, today’s post really should have come first. The simple basics of getting moving are more important than focusing on any specific body part.

Keep it Clean

cleanwell.gif

One of the challenges of traveling with kids is the limited bathroom access factor. During our recent vacation (see Car Travel With Kids), we relied on backup diapers for day adventures where we knew public bathrooms would be scarce or completely disgusting, and we were really happy to tote CleanWell, a natural hand sanitizer, for quick clean up before snacks on the go.

We’re not wild about typical hand sanitizers due to the chemical factor, so CleanWell was a very happy recent discovery. Offered in spray (with a flip top lid) or wipe format, this sanitizer is free of alcohol and synthetic chemicals yet kills 99.99% of germs using a blend of thyme and other essential plant oils. We also dig that the wipes are biodegradable; they’ll break down in sewage and are suitable for composting. Click here to shop the product line.

Skin MD Natural

skinmd.gif

Unless you (generously) count goldfish crackers and wipes, it’s unusual to find much in the diaper bag that truly serves mom and babe well. So we love that Skin MD Natural shielding lotion offers a multitasking means to reduce the load in your tote and take care of your and your kid’s skin.

Great for every day (and proving especially handy during our recent vacation), Skin MD's shielding formula enhances the skin’s natural abilities to lock in moisture and repel irritants (vs. simply temporarily alleviating dry skin). Suitable for face, hands, and body, testers here at Boston Mamas found the lotion refreshingly light and quick absorbing. And personally, as a typical mom lacking in leisurely morning shower and moisturizing time, and as the parent of a kid who has been prone to itching and scratching from day one, I’ve been thrilled to find that this natural lotion is effective yet gentle enough for both of us to use; I only need to tote one bottle, and soothing Laurel’s itches reminds me to tend to my own skin. Available at Amazon and Skin MD Natural, a little lotion goes a long way; the 4 oz bottle ($25) is good for 1-2 months with daily use.

Stress Relievers

smile.gif

I'm actually in a pretty decent place right now, having just returned from a much needed vacation (thanks to Sharon for launching this week's posts in my absence!), but if you're in a less favorable midweek zone, check out these stress relief tips from Jules:

"When I was in social work school, I had a professor tell me a secret “quick fix” to lose my stress. The trick? Smile. I know, I know, who can smile when you feel like crying? But, trust me, this works. I do it most when my road rage gets me, but try it whenever the mood strikes. Count to ten and take a few deep breaths. Now, smile. A great big grin. Go on, no one has to see. Hold the smile for at least thirty seconds. Smiling lowers our blood pressure and reduces endorphins, both changes that can be felt right away. You should notice that after you pause for a moment to smile, you really will feel better (even if it’s because you’re laughing at how silly you feel!). Smiling is contagious, so be sure to share the wealth.

Birthday Fun for Food Allergic Kids

Pursuant to Tracy’s Piggy Party post (including allergy friendly cake and frosting recipes), here are some great tips for hosting and attending parties where allergies are an issue:

"My older son has been to many birthday parties, and has enjoyed himself immensely. As far as I can tell, he has never felt left out because of his food allergies (milk and milk products, eggs, peanuts), and I think the collaboration I engage in with hosting parents helps a lot. There certainly has been a learning curve, though, in figuring out how my son can safely enjoy partying at a friend’s house; the following are some tips that might help parents of allergic kids, and parents hosting parties where allergic kids will be attending.

Two Green Cents

twogreencents.gif

Ever since reclaiming the ability to take a shower (following those early, consuming days of newborn care), I relish days where I have enough time to properly indulge in yummy bath products (not to mention a good shave).

And in the vein of yummy, check out the deliciously eco aware body care by Two Green Cents. Donating two cents of every profit dollar to environmental causes and green initiatives, TGC offers a collection of natural, plant based body products free of animal testing. Their terrific line of rejuvenating, hydrating body washes is formulated from all vegan essential oils, extracts, shea nut butter, and aloe vera (try the tart Heart & Solar Lemongrass and the sun kissed Hot Enough For You Sweet Orange). We also love the summery, fruity pop of their beeswax-based Global Balming lip balm line. You just might want to pick up more than one flavor because once your kid gets a whiff, they’ll want a part of the lip smacking eco action.
