5 Resolution Pitfalls & Solutions

woman-apple.jpgToday, Jules shares five resolution pitfalls and how to avoid them:

You know the concept: a commitment to a personal project or goal. You know the time: the New Year. You know the problem: it rarely happens! And that's typically because people tend to set the bar high too high and too vague. This year, make a resolution to keep your resolution and actually get there by setting goals that are realistic and tangible. Here are 5 resolution pitfalls and how -- as a trainer and social worker -- I suggest avoiding them.

18+ Dry, Chapped Hand Remedies

three-hands.jpgEvery winter I struggle with painful dry, chapped hands -- resulting from the cold weather, my lax hand moisturizing tendencies, endless dish washing, and increased hand washing to combat germs. And it turns out Laurel is prone to the same chapped hand syndrome. I've tried a variety of hand creams but haven't found the perfect one, so I decided to turn to Facebook and Twitter last week to solicit recommendations. And what did I learn? Not only that you people are awesome (actually, I already knew that), but that you people are passionate about moisturizing! Here are the comments I received, grouped alphabetically by brand. Soft, happy hands -- here we come!

Cervical Cancer & the HPV Vaccine

mother_daughter_lores.jpgToday, PPLM Parent Education Program Manager Amy Cody shares tips for talking with your kids about the HPV vaccine:

One of the most important and challenging tasks parents face is communicating our values to our children (without them rolling their eyes) -- especially when talking about sex. But while these conversations can be difficult and awkward, research shows that positive and honest communication helps young people delay sexual activity and make healthier, safer decisions about sex.

First Teeth Basics

baby-teeth.jpgToday, Carole Arsenault of Boston Baby Nurses shares baby first teeth basics:

When can you expect your baby's first teeth? Most babies get their first teeth between the ages of three and seven months old, although it is possible to get them earlier or even later than seven months. Teeth actually start to develop before birth as tooth buds form in the gums, but your baby's teeth will start to break through one at a time throughout the first two years, typically in this order: bottom two middle, top two middle, side, and then back teeth. The last teeth to appear will be your baby's molars, which come in around two years old. By three your baby will have a full set of 20 baby teeth.

Super Quick Hair Fix

sephora-ponytail.jpgParticularly given how hot it's been this summer, when I need to head out for meetings or events, I love the concept of the sleek ponytail -- in which you make a ponytail, wrap a piece of hair from the ponytail around the elastic, and bobby pin the hair wrap into place. However, my hair is thick and super straight, which makes pinning difficult; not to mention that I've always found it hard to see whether things look even in the back.

9 Bits of Web Awesomeness

mojito.jpgI recently wrote about getting back to basics with reading and engaging on the web. I'm going to try to do these roundups more regularly. I hope you enjoy these 9 bits of web awesomeness.

Arbonne's Baby Care

arbonne-baby.jpgI love supporting the businesses of friends and family, so last year, when I learned that my high school pal Ashley was an Arbonne consultant, I started purchasing my FC5 skin care products from her. And when Ashley found out I was pregnant, she sent me Arbonne's Baby Care Set. Not only was I touched by this kind gift, but since Violet's birth, I've been happy to discover that I dig these products for Violet (save the body oil, which I haven't yet had occasion to use) just as much as I do the FC5 collection for myself.

12 Bits of Web Awesomeness

i-heart-massachusetts.jpgHello everyone -- I hope you have fantastically relaxing plans for the Memorial Day long weekend! We're going to be staying local and keeping it low key since June will be a bit crazy, but at the very least, yummy food and fun and games with Laurel and Violet are on the docket. (Admittedly, hopefully we'll also chip away a bit at some household to do's.) Meanwhile, I thought I'd share 12 bits of web awesomeness to entertain you over the long weekend. Enjoy!

Four Pretty & Lovely Things

joslyn1-michelle-armas.jpgI met Joslyn Taylor of Simple Lovely last year in New York City at an event to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, and was thrilled to reconnect with her awesomeness at Altitude Design Summit this year. Joslyn is so elegant and has wonderful (seemingly effortless!) style, so for today's four favorites guest post, I asked Joslyn to share four pretty and lovely things to help moms forget the giant mess that home has turned into (when I asked Joslyn to guest post I envisioned being surrounded by soiled burp cloths, breast pump supplies, and take out containers...).

Beating the Winter Beauty & Fashion Blahs

life-style-episode-12.jpgDespite the unusually warm weather this week, I'm pretty sure winter is not done with us, so it was perfect to chat yesterday about beating the winter beauty and fashion blahs with Roxanna Sarmiento of Everyday Treats and The Frog & Snail Society, and Meredith Sinclair of Hoo-Dee-Hoo and Chicago Parent. During the show, Roxanna and I discussed hydration, cleansing, moisturizing, and makeup solutions, and Meredith and I covered shop-your-closet fashion hacks and easy ways to give your winter wardrobe new life. Check out the episode for full commentary and inspiration, and for easy reference, below are the conversation point links that were shared during the interviews. Enjoy!

Shellac for the Season

cnd-shellac.jpgToday, Jennifer shares her favorite beauty solution for the season:

A couple of weeks ago some gal pals and I went to a local salon, Lexington Nails in Lexington, to check a miraculous new gel-based nail polish we'd heard about called CND Shellac. Apparently it's strong enough to resist the smudges, chips, and fading that we moms experience all too quickly after treating ourselves to a manicure. Since the product is so new, this particular salon only offered a few colors, so I went with a basic pale pink just to be on the safe side. It took only 20-25 minutes to apply and dry under a UV lamp. It was crazy fast drying. Like, no-worries-digging-for-your-car-keys-in-your-handbag-right-after crazy fast. We all marveled at our nails over coffee afterward.

Flu Shots for Pregnant Women & Babies

flu-gov-image.jpgToday, Carole Arsenault of Boston Baby Nurses shares information on the flu shot for pregnant women and babies, and staying healthy during flu season:

My clients often ask me whether the flu shot is safe for pregnant women and babies. And the answer is yes; in fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends flu shots (not nasal spray) for all women who are pregnant during the flu season (November - February). The CDC also recommends the flu shot for primary infant caregivers and babies over 6 months of age. The nasal spray is recommended and effective for children two years of age and older.

Medical Accessory Alert

laurens-hope-robot-medical-id.jpgToday, Jennifer shares a couple of great resources for medical alert tracking and cool ID accessories for grownups and kids:

I love jewelry and accessories...I mean, I really, really love them. So when a recent medical issue resulted in my need for a medic ID bracelet (I have an adult onset seizure disorder controlled by meds -- or as I like to say, I'm just a little bit electric), the diagnosis left me with a serious accessory challenge: where do I get a cute medic alert bracelet? And also, how should I store my emergency medical information?

Birthday Giveaway: Bliss Boston

bliss-spa-boston.jpgLast month I served as a practice dummy for Bliss Boston, and given that the Bliss team was able to deliver the awesome in a temporary, not so fancy training space, I cannot wait to go back once the 5,000 square foot spa opens for real this summer at the W Boston. Offering a full range of spa services such as facials, body treatments, massage, waxing, and mani/pedis, Maureen skillfully infused new life into my face with the triple oxygen treatment and Leanne executed what is possibly the most awesome body treatment ever: a carrot and sesame body buff that involves being rubbed in carrot mulch, drizzled in warm milk and honey, and scrubbed with sesame and sea salt. AMAZING. And as part of my Boston Mamas Fourth Birthday Giveaway Series, Bliss Boston generously is gifting two lucky winners each with a $100 gift certificate to the Boston spa. Whether you want to get some self care goodies for yourself or a mom friend, check out Earth Mama Angel Baby Organics. Offering a range of natural self care products to cover the various stages of care that expecting and newly delivered moms need, I especially like the ease and assembly of their gift sets. The Sweet Smell of Soaptopia

soaptopia.jpgDuring my recent quest for non-tchotchke awesomeness for Jon's birthday, I was thrilled to discover Soaptopia (another lead from my pals at Cool Mom Picks; thanks ladies!). Operated by a team that clearly has a sense of humor (see the names of their soaps, for example) and is immensely passionate about natural body products (a quick tweet asking for man product recommendations led to an impressively thorough e-mail response about options), I pretty much think it's impossible to go wrong with anything from this online shop.

Abe's Market

abes-market-1.jpgI'm a major proponent of tchotchke-free gifting and one of my favorite gifts to give is soap; it's useful, one can never have enough of it, and it can look like little works of art. Jon and I have a tradition of soap gifting around his birthday and this year I wanted to try some new brands. Following a query on Twitter, I was grateful to my friends Liz and Kristen at Cool Mom Picks for responding back with some of their favorite soap shops. The first place I put in an order at was Abe's Market.

One of the unexpected legacies of my pregnancy (now five years ago) is that I'm very conscious of the myriad ingredients in the myriad products I use in my home and for my body (and for my daughter's body). I have tried to educate myself about what's good, bad, and worse in household cleaners and beauty products, and I've become vigilant about reading labels and searching out items that are as close to natural as possible.

Love These Links: (Mostly) DIY Edition

alpha-mom-plantable-paper.jpgHere are some lovely links that caught my eye this week around the web. Clearly I've got DIY projects (and travel) on my mind. I love this pretty plantable paper project from Alpha Mom (shown) and this sweet paper corsage tutorial from Make and Takes. Proper Push-Ups

istock-push-ups.jpgToday from Jules, because no doubt some post-holidays push-ups could do us all good:

“As busy mothers (synonymous words as far as I’m concerned), we tend to put ourselves on the back burner to care for the little ones. With two babies under the age of 18 months, I have had to sacrifice lots of me time. However, one thing I refuse to give up is my daily workout regimen. And on days where I only have 10 minutes to spare, I do push-ups. Push-ups are a weight bearing exercise that target multiple muscle groups and, when done correctly, can seriously tighten you up in no time.

Simplifying The Holidays: Wicked Easy Makeup

bobbi-brown-concealer.jpgOne of the great things about BlogHer Boston was that it gave me the opportunity to emerge out of my blogging cave and meet fabulous local bloggers in real life. And one of those bloggers was Roxanna of Miguelina. Roxanna is a lovely person; smart, kind, and funny, and mysteriously, she always manages to look perfectly assembled despite tweets that might otherwise suggest she’s unraveling (to her credit, she’s allowed some unraveling…she just delivered her third son in October). Perhaps that’s why she’s so adept at blogging beauty. I’m thrilled that today, for the ninth installment of my Simplifying the Holidays guest blog series, Roxanna shares a wicked easy makeup routine so you can spend less time fussing in the bathroom and more time enjoying time with family and friends.

Not-So-Beauty Spots

sunlight.jpgToday, Kate shares a skin care PSA:

“Born with various skin sensitivities and a preternatural tendency to sunburn, I have spent my fair share of time in dermatology offices. I work hard to take care of my skin with a complicated (and expensive) regimen of creams and ointments, and now pride myself on having entered my mid-30s with healthy and happy skin that rarely feels direct sun and generally rewards me by looking decent even on days when my daughter wakes in the middle of the night.

(Safely) Paint Those Piggies

piggy-paint.jpgWhether her nails are exposed during summer or concealed by socks and mittens during winter, Laurel loves having her nails painted; she typically wants at least four colors in one sitting. Subsequently, I only use non-toxic products and am a fan of Piggy Paint’s natural, odorless nail products. Available in a cool palette of colors, the polishes apply smoothly and are bright on application. And Piggy Paint's nail polish remover is blissfully free of stinky solvents. It takes a smidgen more time for polish to come off with the non-toxic remover (compared to the chemical-laden stuff), but those seconds are well worth it, knowing that Laurel's nails are in good hands.

gobble-gobble-gobble.jpgBack in March I gave myself a really excellent gift and started making self-care a priority. And after embarking on various challenges of the shredding and yoga variety, I decided to test my longstanding belief that I'm not built to run by trying the Couch-to-5K running plan. Miraculously, here I am, on Week 8 of the plan and now signed up for the Thanksgiving Day Gobble, Gobble, Gobble run in Davis Square (which, by the way, I thought was a 5K but actually is a 4 miler...gulp).

Equipped & Eco-Friendly

tomkit.jpgMy mom and I never discussed birds, bees, or any other metaphorical critters, so it’s not surprising that I was completely unprepared when my period started. I’m thus committed to educating Laurel about periods and am happy to see products such as the tomKIT on the market. Designed to equip girls for their period in eco-friendly fashion, the tomKIT includes biodegradable, flushable pads, wipes, and panty liners, recyclable disposal sacks, cotton underwear, and natural hand sanitizer and lip balm, all housed in a natural jute cosmetic case. Also handily included: a chart to teach girls to track their periods because really, it’s pretty inexcusable for women (like me and many of my friends) to make it well into their 20s before understanding cycles.

The Joy of Walking

walking.jpgToday, Kate shares her favorite means for fitness:

“I turned 35 this year, which - combined with other major changes in my life - prodded me into thinking that I should be doing more to keep myself healthy and active. In the past, I've tried gyms, pools, classes, DVDs, and different pairs of sneakers, but nothing has ever stuck for very long and nothing has really felt right: classes don't fit my schedule, gyms are too impersonal, pools are too much of a nuisance (the chlorine! the wet hair!), and I've never quite had the discipline to commit to exercise at home. However, my family has a history of heart disease and I have some very special people for whom to remain healthy, so I decided that this spring would be the season in which I would figure out a way to exercise that I could both enjoy and sustain.

Carole Arsenault’s husband Marc kindly steps in with a guest review of Pevonia Botanica’s natural home-spa man products. Repurposing Breast Cream

lansinoh.jpgI love how resourceful moms are. This tip comes courtesy of my girlfriend Heidi:

“So everyone (or many of us) get gnarly feet in the winter months, and I am always in search of the miracle product that will soften my feet. I recently cleaned out my “mother drawer” and began using my Lansinoh lanolin breast cream on my feet, and voila - cracked heels and rough toes be gone! Four days of use and it’s like having a new pair of feet! A fun way to repurpose if you’re not planning on breastfeeding for a while.”

Soapy Sunscreen

bethesda.jpgAs much as I love summer, I’m always relieved when fall arrives and I no longer need to slather Laurel in sunscreen. The task is completely necessary, but nobody enjoys it. Even after summer, though, skin protection is important and I love the nifty little shortcut that Bethesda sunscreen soap offers. This natural soap – which is suitable for the whole family – nurtures the skin via a boatload of vitamins and minerals, and creates an unnoticeable protective layer that provides a minimum of SPF 10 protection. If only summer skin protection was this easy!

Pampered Protection

belli.jpgAs the cool weather sets in, so do the colds and skin care battles, making it ever more important to find safe, nourishing body products for mom and babe. And Belli delivers the goods. Providing “pampered protection” pregnancy, baby, and motherhood body products that repair and relax, Belli takes safety seriously, first scouring medical research findings and consulting with physicians, chemists, nurses, aestheticians, doulas, and prenatal massage therapists, then excluding any ingredients linked to pre and postnatal problems. My top restorative picks include their Surgical Scar Reducer and Body Firming Serum, but their Moisturizing Hand Sanitizer is a must have for moms on the go. This gel does its double duty gently yet powerfully, and the colorful microbeads fascinate Laurel into keeping her hands pristine when we're out and about.

Belly Relief

honeydew.jpgI love body products - the delicious smells, the pretty packaging, the pampered feeling. And there’s a cool new collection on the block in Honeydew, a paraben, preservative, dye, and fragrance free line packed with natural goodness and formulated especially for expecting and new moms. Creamy in composition and yummy in natural scent, my top picks are the Balmy Mommy belly balm, which offers on the go itch relief via its glide on applicator, and the C-Scar Therapy cream, which helps reduce the appearance of surgical scars, partially thanks to - of all things - onion extract.

You Glow Girl

glowmama.jpgAs someone who consumes mostly water, fruit juices tend to be too sweet for me, and I found myself especially intolerant of intense sugar levels during pregnancy. And whether you’re pregnant, nursing, or actively chasing kids, here's a tasty new way to keep hydrated and vitamin infused. Glow Mama is more like flavored water than a fruit beverage, and this natural composition is low in calories and high in essential vitamins and minerals; among them, impressive amounts of fiber, vitamin C, and folic acid. The drink isn’t meant to replace your daily vitamin, but as someone who - despite the best of intentions - routinely forgets to take a multivitamin, Glow Mama is a great way to pack in nutrients on the go.

Mousse-Like Magic

oopsydaisy.bmpAlthough my scientific training has inspired a general interest in knowing how things work, every so often something mysteriously magical presents itself to me and I just don’t bother asking questions. Oopsy Daisy! High Chair Hair Care no rinse shampoo is just such a thing. This all natural, plant based concoction pumps from the bottle foamy like styling mousse – minus the nasty detergents or propellants – and all you need to do is work the shampoo through your child’s hair, towel dry (sometimes I even skip this step), and comb out for clean, yummy smelling results. It’s the perfect post-meal clean up solution when your child’s hair is peppered with sticky bits but a full tubby isn’t necessary.

Happy Hooping

hoopnotica.jpgI used to be a gym and swim rat, but traditional exercise just doesn’t do it for me these days. I need creative movement, and while I used to attribute my inability to hula hoop to stiff hips, I now know better: it’s all physics, and hooping makes for a fun, unexpected workout. The trick is that Hoopnotica’s grown up and kid hoops are slightly heavier and larger, actually making it easier to hoop - since smaller, more controlled revolutions are key - then incorporate tricks into your newfound talent. The Travel Hoop is particularly brilliant; the six segments easily snap together or collapse for toting and storage. And best of all, whether I’m simply hula hooping, or attempting to learn from the hoopdancing DVDs, I can't help but have a good time.

TLC in Tandem

susanbrown.jpgIt’s no surprise why babies get showered with goodies, but moms need attention too - particularly postpartum - and that’s why I dig Susan Brown’s Baby. This collection of rich yet gentle, paraben-free body products ensures that mom and baby get their TLC in tandem; the mom products focus on nurturing the belly and feet, while the baby line includes items for bath, diapering, and relaxation. I particularly love the SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion; the composition is creamy yet mild, fragrance-free, and packed with cocoa, shea, and jojoba butters to keep your kid’s skin hydrated. I especially love that it’s gentle and effective enough to be used on Laurel’s face and doesn't feel greasy or sticky.

Bring on the Butter

shearadiance.jpgI’ve never understood why Laurel would rather scratch an itch bloody than ask for lotion, but I’m now convinced that until recently we just didn’t have the right goods. Shea Radiance offers a variety of natural skin care goods, and their fresh pressed shea butter products are deliciously effective. Their baby butter - apparently suitable for preschoolers - is creamy, soothing, and offers a gentle dose of aromatherapy perfect for post-bath wind down. See The Light

babylight.jpgIt wasn’t until last summer – when I could use the prospect of nail polish as bait – that I was able to clip Laurel's nails while she was awake. Prior to that, I’d crouch in the dark next to her crib, or bend uncomfortably over the rails (an increasingly challenging task as her mattress level lowered...), holding a flashlight in my mouth. Seriously. If this sounds familiar, get yourself a Baby Light & Clip. Cuckoo for Coconut

sumbody.jpgCoconut scents can go terribly wrong (think overpowering suntan lotion), but sumbody’s Coconut & Cream Organic Sugar Scrub gets it just right. Part of the new, eco-chic collection at gigglefish, this scrub is both functional and luxurious. The coarse brown sugar grains exfoliate effectively (best for normal to dry skin), while the shea and cocoa butters + safflower, pistachio, and other essential oils hydrate and protect the skin without leaving residue. “While Fall brings with it freshly picked apples, hot cocoa, and beautiful foliage, it also ushers in inevitable coughs, sneezes, and all kinds of mucous-y wonder. And while I used to reach for the heavy-duty cold remedies, I’ve found that often times the simplest remedies can yield the greatest relief. A couple of months ago I wrote about the Neti Pot, a fantastic nasal irrigation system that relieves many nasal ailments. A Much Needed Push

Ever since I stopped nursing and gained back 10 unshakeable pounds, I’ve sporadically toyed with different fitness options. As I’ve been trolling for fall shoes, I’ve come to realize that I have something of a case of foot claustrophobia. I want barely there and easy on/off (the latter being a mom essential actually), and I’m already lamenting the end of flip-flop season. With athletic footwear, however, there’s little choice but to lace up, and thanks to a review partnership with The Parent Bloggers Network and Ryka, I’ve had the chance to test a couple of pairs of Ryka sneakers and identify which ones do and do not make my feet hyperventilate, so to speak.

Multitasking Minutes: The Squat & Edit

As Jon and I adjust to juggling his new multi-site schedule and my work needs, one car, the never ending list of household errands (requiring said one car), and Laurel’s periodic resistance to heading to her new preschool room, it seems as if we spend an inordinate amount of time figuring out how many minutes it takes to do X, Y, or Z. Airborne

airborne.gif

When I feel a cold coming I bring on the immune system boosters with brute force, so it was fortuitous that we were testing Airborne last week, when the chaos of prepping for the art show was getting to me.

Airborne's primary product line boosts immune systems at the onset of cold symptoms or before entering germy environments. A couple of days before the show I started getting sick; I dosed up on Airborne, forced myself into bed early, and thankfully was back on track the next day. The quick dissolving adult tablets come in orange, lemon-lime, and pink grapefruit and as someone who prefers to drink water throughout the day, I’d just suggest diluting the tablet in more than the recommended “small amount of water” to tone down the sweetness. Airborne also now offers immune system boosting Power Pixies for kids 4-12 (no water needed, just pour on the tongue like the original pixie sticks candy).

Tone That Tummy

mamamio.gif

With the exception of those traipsing the Hollywood fantastic, most mamas don’t have the resources for the personal trainers, nutritionists, and/or (ahem) cosmetic assistance required to flaunt an awe inspiring postpartum tummy at the beach. And while we advocate and celebrate whatever small self care efforts you can make in terms of good food and fitness (be it short walks or intervals of exercise), you probably also could stand (and deserve) to have a little extra help of the non-invasive cosmetic variety.

Sudsy Sponges

circleoffriends.jpg

While in cooler weather I don’t find it necessary to do daily baths (perhaps to a fault, according to my mom), the sticky days of summer require increased bath frequency, both to clean and cool off little, busy bodies.

These days the ever-independent Laurel really likes scrubbing herself, and she’s been having a lot of fun with the sudsy sponges by Circle of Friends. Available in banana, blueberry, mint chocolate, mandarin orange, raspberry, and root beer, these hypo-allergenic sponges are infused with an unbelievable amount of soap to ensure plenty of use (and a squeaky clean kid). Per Circle of Friends’s dedication to cultural awareness, each flavor is associated with a character and bit of trivia from a different country.

All You Can Do

jumprope.gif

There’s nothing like parenthood to force you to operate in “good enough” (vs. perfectionist) mode. In that vein, today Jules encourages women to shift their fitness mindset from an all-or-nothing to an all-you-can-do approach, offering tips to get you on the road to strength and good health, and exercises you can do in as little as 10-15 minutes:

“Earlier I posted on how to shape your back, but in hindsight, today’s post really should have come first. The simple basics of getting moving are more important than focusing on any specific body part.

Keep it Clean

cleanwell.gif

One of the challenges of traveling with kids is the limited bathroom access factor. During our recent vacation (see Car Travel With Kids), we relied on backup diapers for day adventures where we knew public bathrooms would be scarce or completely disgusting, and we were really happy to tote CleanWell, a natural hand sanitizer, for quick clean up before snacks on the go.

We’re not wild about typical hand sanitizers due to the chemical factor, so CleanWell was a very happy recent discovery. Offered in spray (with a flip top lid) or wipe format, this sanitizer is free of alcohol and synthetic chemicals yet kills 99.99% of germs using a blend of thyme and other essential plant oils. We also dig that the wipes are biodegradable; they’ll break down in sewage and are suitable for composting. Click here to shop the product line.

Skin MD Natural

skinmd.gif

Unless you (generously) count goldfish crackers and wipes, it’s unusual to find much in the diaper bag that truly serves mom and babe well. So we love that Skin MD Natural shielding lotion offers a multitasking means to reduce the load in your tote and take care of your and your kid’s skin.

Great for every day (and proving especially handy during our recent vacation), Skin MD's shielding formula enhances the skin’s natural abilities to lock in moisture and repel irritants (vs. simply temporarily alleviating dry skin). Suitable for face, hands, and body, testers here at Boston Mamas found the lotion refreshingly light and quick absorbing. And personally, as a typical mom lacking in leisurely morning shower and moisturizing time, and as the parent of a kid who has been prone to itching and scratching from day one, I’ve been thrilled to find that this natural lotion is effective yet gentle enough for both of us to use; I only need to tote one bottle, and soothing Laurel’s itches reminds me to tend to my own skin. Available at Amazon and Skin MD Natural, a little lotion goes a long way; the 4 oz bottle ($25) is good for 1-2 months with daily use.

Stress Relievers

smile.gif

I'm actually in a pretty decent place right now, having just returned from a much needed vacation (thanks to Sharon for launching this week's posts in my absence!), but if you're in a less favorable midweek zone, check out these stress relief tips from Jules:

"When I was in social work school, I had a professor tell me a secret “quick fix” to lose my stress. The trick? Smile. I know, I know, who can smile when you feel like crying? But, trust me, this works. I do it most when my road rage gets me, but try it whenever the mood strikes. Count to ten and take a few deep breaths. Now, smile. A great big grin. Go on, no one has to see. Hold the smile for at least thirty seconds. Smiling lowers our blood pressure and reduces endorphins, both changes that can be felt right away. You should notice that after you pause for a moment to smile, you really will feel better (even if it’s because you’re laughing at how silly you feel!). Smiling is contagious, so be sure to share the wealth.

Birthday Fun for Food Allergic Kids

cupcakes.gif

Pursuant to Tracy’s Piggy Party post (including allergy friendly cake and frosting recipes), here are some great tips for hosting and attending parties where allergies are an issue:

"My older son has been to many birthday parties, and has enjoyed himself immensely. As far as I can tell, he has never felt left out because of his food allergies (milk and milk products, eggs, peanuts), and I think the collaboration I engage in with hosting parents helps a lot. There certainly has been a learning curve, though, in figuring out how my son can safely enjoy partying at a friend’s house; the following are some tips that might help parents of allergic kids, and parents hosting parties where allergic kids will be attending.

Ever since reclaiming the ability to take a shower (following those early, consuming days of newborn care), I relish days where I have enough time to properly indulge in yummy bath products (not to mention a good shave).

Grip As You Tip

yogitoes.gif

Hot yoga is all the rage these days, and the practice’s popularity often leads to steamy, crowded classes where balance is essential to prevent yogi dominoes. Today, guest contributor Sharon (who currently is rocking a 40 day yoga challenge) shares a product that keeps her practice styling and slip free:

“I recently learned of an item that helps create a safer environment for yoga practice. Essential while doing wheels, inversions, or any posture that compromises balance and safety on a regular yoga or fitness mat, the Yogitoes Skidless Yoga Towel provides traction and grip as you tip. Place the towel over your regular yoga mat; the face up side is absorptive while the face down side features silicone nubs that grip the mat, keeping hands and feet in place even when the sweat starts to flow (a little sprinkle of water on the absorptive side pre-session also helps get the traction going). Now you can meditate and breathe into the burn of a pose rather than worry whether your wheel is going to be a back flop, or if your headstand is going to land you in the hospital (or atop a neighboring yogi).

Reason to Walk

walking.gif

Raise your hand if this scenario sounds familiar: you’re a reasonably healthy person who enjoys fresh air and a few moments to yourself. You may have even exercised regularly at some point within the last 10 years. Then you had a baby.

Ever since becoming a mom, exercise has lurked at the bottom of my priority list (save a stint during my postdoctoral fellowship where I hit the gym on the clock to cope with my misery…). Even now as a professionally happy freelancer, leisurely walks just don’t seem feasible since I constantly have more work than covered hours. If I’m walking I need to be multitasking or going somewhere; it’s not the most mindful, meditative approach, but I’ve come to terms with it.

Bye Bye Boo Boo!

zenmomma.gif

New Englanders love to talk weather, and for parents, each season requires different techniques to protect kids from the elements. Fall and spring keep us guessing about cool or warm weather clothing, winter requires obsessive bundling and lotioning, and the summer – which we got a taste of this past week – requires increased attention to skin protection.

To survive summer bugs and boo boos, consider ZenMomma’s natural skin care products for kids. Their Mane-Event hair gel and No-Fly Zone bug spray include natural oils and extracts concocted to repel bugs. The hair gel also includes lice deterring rosemary oils, and the water-based bug spray is free of DEET or other synthetic insecticides. Our favorite of their summer collection is the Bye Bye Boo Boo herbal salve (shown; $12.50). This award winning salve serves to soothe cuts, abrasions, chapped lips, diaper rash, and insect bites. Laurel wore shorts for the first time earlier this week and soon had her first scraped knee of the season. Every day since, she has asked for her “boo boo salve” for her scrape, as well as for any other bump, bruise, or stubbed toe she has incurred.

ZenMomma is offering our readers a 10% discount (applied following receipt of your order) + a free gift using code BOSTONMAMAS.

Back Yourself Up

back.gif

If you persistently badger your partner for back rub relief, your back likely could use a little preventative TLC. This morning, new guest contributor Jules shares some great tips for how to back yourself up:

“We all know how vital it is to exercise regularly, but many of us don’t realize how important it is to work each and every one of our muscles. Many women neglect working the back muscles because, aesthetically, most of us are more concerned with our thighs or abs. But, the muscles in our backs are overworked and overused, even though we don’t often know it. A strong back will reduce back pain, protect you from some potential back injuries, and improve posture (a quick way to look like your lost a few pounds!). In addition, a strong back helps us with the undeniable activities of daily living: picking up the kids, carrying groceries, and overall flexibility and strength. While it can be challenging to tone what you can’t see when you look in the mirror, it is worth your health (and that sexy strapless dress) to take the time on your back that you take on your front. Be sure to consult your physician before beginning any work out program. Try these to exercises at home to begin (you can buy a stability ball at any fitness stores and at many chain stores like Kmart or Target):
