Letting Go in the Kitchen

laurel-cooking.jpgLaurel and I spend a lot of time in the kitchen together and I continually remind myself to let go of perfection and control so she can really experience the cooking and baking processes. And it’s paid off. Check out my guest post for Michelle Stern’s What’s Cooking with YOUR Kids series, where I share how letting Laurel take charge in the kitchen resulted in a fine meal (and some time for me on the couch!). Enjoy!

I just went over and read it and it amazes me that at just 5 your little girl made dinner for you! How sweet is that!?

It reminded me of a friend of mine. When we were younger, her family designated that each child be in charge of dinner one night a week. I always thought that was neat and it sounds like your daughter is well on her way to cooking many meals for you in the future! :-)

have you heard of mollie katzen's cook books for kids? They're called Salad People and Pretend Soup. Our 5 year old has them and loves to pick out recipes to try. Some are quite simple and involve little to no cooking, but others involve some heat source and prep work. Each recipe is set up with "big person" instructions - the recipe, what needs to be made up/measured out ahead of time, and "little chef" instructions which are in picture form w/ minimal words or numbers to read. We have enjoyed home made lemon-lime soda, chocolate banana smoothies, muffins, pasta and salads from our little chef.
