Flu Information Sessions

bphc-flu.jpgIf you have questions about influenza/H1N1, the Boston Public Library and the Boston Public Health Commission are hosting a series of information sessions across the city, starting today. Topics will include flu prevention, care, myths and facts, and information on free flu clinics. All sessions are free and open to the public; no registration required.

I'm a huge vaccine proponent, but this year was the second year in a row that my daughter got sick after getting the flu shot. Last year it was after the inactivated seasonal flu shot and this year it was after the live attenuated H1N1 shot (nasal mist). Had a high fever for two days. She is normally quite healthy, especially compared to her brother and her peers and has no issues with other vaccines. My son has had no issues with flu shots in the past and received the inactivated seasonal and H1N1 this year at the same time with no problems.

I am grateful for the availability of flu shots, especially for the kids (but my husband is having a hard time getting one). But next year, my daughter will be steering clear of the flu shot, while the rest of us will still get them.

Angela, thanks for sharing and so sorry to hear about your daughter. Hope she is feeling better now!

I was very curious to see what happened with flu shots this year (we only opted for the seasonal). Last year Laurel didn't get sick, but she developed this strange blister type thing on her tongue -- same side as the shot. It didn't hurt and it eventually went away, but it clearly seemed like a sign her body was reacting to the shot.

This year she had no reaction at all to the seasonal. So strange the way these things work.
