Chocolate Tofu Pie…For Real

silken-tofu.jpgThis past weekend our friend Rhoda introduced us to a dessert that impressively satisfied everyone’s sweet tooth while accommodating her lactose intolerance. Admittedly, though I adore tofu (it’s in the genes), as an avid classic baker I was a tad skeptical about tofu dessert, but this Easy Chocolate Tofu Pie truly surprised me. Essentially a chocolate pudding pie, the filling was smooth, rich, and chocolate-y, and the graham cracker crust offered a classic contrast; I also served strawberries on the side. Even Laurel – who consumed tofu by the handfuls as a toddler but no longer will touch it in cube form – gobbled her serving (even knowing it was tofu based).

This is a great dessert option to offer at parties where dairy allergies are an issue and it was such an impressive reflection of the real thing that I’m tempted to try more tofu desserts for the health benefits.

Glad you enjoyed the pie so much - thanks for the mention. I should say that, as a lactose intolerant person, I am not a tofu lover, generally speaking. I don't like it in vegetarian meal entrees, no matter quite how it's flavored. It has always seemes to taste a bit off, and its texture has always been too rubbery for my taste.

When I was first diagnosed with lactose intolerance (back in 1988), I used to eat Toffuti - the vanilla almond bark flavor was a favorite -(http://www.tofutti.com/pp.shtml)for dessert. This was before Toffuti cuties (http://www.tofutti.com/c-v.shtml), the lovely and tasty ice cream sandwich-esque desserts that we see today. Not nearly as elegant or as delicious, this stuff was the only other Tofu-based item I could stomach. Now I eat other tofu-based dessert items, including Toffuti cuties. And there are many more dessert items that I enjoy, now that there are more lactose-free options out there - both to be baked and to be bought.

Oooo, I'll have to try this! We have been making a tofu/chocolate pie that a contestant in a Food Network show presented but I'd love to try this too.

Here is the one I've made before:

I'm soooo excited to try this! We're still newbie vegetarians so we're always looking for fun, easy recipes. Thanks for sharing!
