Polly's Brand New Bag
Laurel loves Polly Pocket dolls, but the rubber outfits still prove challenging even for her dexterous little fingers (which negates the independent play that would allow me to tidy up or get dinner on the table). But Polly’s got a brand new bag, as it were, with the fall launch of Polly Pocket Pop ‘N Swap dolls. Offered in dance and sport styles, these sets are like Mrs. Potato Head’s well dressed cousin, complete with mix and match head, torso, and bottom pieces that easily snap into hundreds of fashion combos. Laurel still usually wants my fashion opinion on her creations, but I love that the ease of these pieces allows her to implement the outfits on her own.
Want to win a Polly Pocket Pop ‘N Swap set*? Here’s how:

My daughter loved playing with her Polly Pockets. She would get them for her birthday and Christmas - then we moved recently and we lost the whole box of Polly Pockets. I really would like to start collecting them for her again.

I remember playing with Polly Pocket when I was a little kid--I had a ring that opened into her house! I definitely want my little niece to enjoy PP just as much as I did.

My 4 year old loves Polly's! There nice because you can clean them easily and you don't have to deal with that "fake" hair most dolls have. Thanks for the entry!

well, now that I have a daughter, I guess pollys are in my future, too! However, my 6 year old niece needs a birthday present from her auntie and cousins, too!

Frankly, I do not want to win this entry. At first I liked the idea that sports were included. But, when I went to the site I was dismayed to see that all the images are of white women, with Barbie type figures. These stereotypes do not give our girls the right message.

Dear Catherine D.,
Thanks for your thoughtful comment. Your concern completely resonates with us. We haven't been able to avoid the (peer inspired, I believe) obsession with Barbies and Disney princesses and Polly dolls - all of which, as you point out, are problematic in the body image and also cultural domains.
Laurel does love the characters though, so the way we handle it is identify the stuff in this genre (like these Polly dolls) that encourages motor control development and creativity and learning (activity books, art supplies, etc), and otherwise we are very devoted to identifying other books and toys that foster cultural awareness and general acceptance no matter what shape or size a person is. We have featured lots of these items on this site, which you can find in the archives (books, art supplies and toys).
Thanks again for commenting in!
