Buy, Buy Baby

If you’ve ever felt trapped or tempted by emphatic declarations that your kid will become a genius if you buy product X, Y, or Z, you’re not alone. Check out this lead from Kate: Business Week’s recent review of Buy, Buy Baby: How Consumer Culture Manipulates Parents and Harms Young Minds. Written by investigative reporter and mother of two Susan Gregory Thomas, the book will take you inside the marketing blitz aimed at kids.

This is great...Even the review prompted me to rethink some of my recent buying impulses. As I prepare for a 2 hour car ride, followed by an afternoon of planes and airports *alone* with the 2 boys, I've been increasingly drawn to some of the gimmicky video gamer type things I'm normally so reluctant to consider buying for the kids. I found myself thinking that "just this once" it wouldn't be bad, because at least one kid would be occupied. Except it's a slippery slope. Once I give it to him, I can't really take it back. And then we'll need more games...etc. etc.
Thanks for timely reminder to get creative about our plane trip, and stick to my parenting "guns."
